- Chapter 34.1 - Let’s Always Stay Together
More than an hour had passed since they finished their barbecue, and the sky had completely darkened. Cheng Jianian moved a stool to sit beside Shen Yunmiao, leaning against her as she took a deep breath.
“You smell so good, Miaomiao so fragrant.”
Shen Yunmiao lifted her collar to sniff it, frowning slightly. “What smell? The barbecue?”
Cheng Jianian shook her head. “You have the scent of snowflakes, cool and crisp.”
Shen Yunmiao didn’t understand what she meant, she couldn’t detect that refreshing fragrance on herself. She simply ruffled Cheng Jianian’s hair and smiled. “Do you like it?”
Cheng Jianian replied, “I like it so much I want to devour you. That way, we’d never have to part, and I could always breathe in your scent.”
Her words sent a chill down the spine, but Shen Yunmiao’s adoration for her was so profound that anyone else would have fled in fear.
Shen Yunmiao said, “If you ate me, wouldn’t that mean you’d never see me again?”
Cheng Jianian’s voice dropped low. “I could never bring myself to eat you.”
She stood up, pulling Shen Yunmiao to her feet as well, and straightened her collar with a smile. “Let’s go for a walk.”
Apart from a few staff members, the island was mostly deserted. However, drones circled overhead for surveillance, ensuring their safety even during an evening stroll.
Waves crashed against the rocks, their rhythmic rustling echoing softly.
It was an uneasy tranquility.
Cheng Jianian took her companion’s hand and suddenly thought of something. “Miaomiao, have you ever held someone else’s hand before?”
“Yes!” Shen Yunmiao never grew annoyed by her peculiar questions and answered with a smile. “When I was little, the teachers at the orphanage held my hand while taking me to meet potential adoptive families. But in the end, they always brought me back.”
Her tone was calm, as though she were describing a minor incident rather than a painful memory.
Cheng Jianian’s heart ached, and she regretted asking. Her voice carried a barely noticeable bitterness. “It’s a pity I was so young back then. If only I were much older, I would have taken you in and raised you like a little princess, never letting you suffer again.”
Shen Yunmiao gently squeezed her fingertips, comforting her. “If that were the case, you wouldn’t be able to date me, you’d end up in jail.”
Cheng Jianian replied, “Then I wouldn’t date you. Even if we never became lovers, it would be fine, as long as you were happy.”
Her tone made it clear she wasn’t joking but speaking earnestly. Shen Yunmiao felt a tremor in her heart, as if something fragile were on the verge of shattering.
She disagreed softly, “Why think that way? To me, being with you is what brings the greatest happiness.”
The sea and sky merged into one as night fell. The white sand glistened under the moonlight, pure and enchanting.
The soft radiance also illuminated her dark, gentle eyes, which, though always warm and smiling, now held unwavering determination.
Cheng Jianian pulled her gently into an embrace, her voice hushed. “Thank you, Miaomiao. Thank you for finding happiness because of me.”
In her short twenty years of life, she had often been the cause of others’ disappointment, sorrow, anger, or envy. But bringing someone happiness that was something she had never experienced before.
Xiao Cheng had always lived her life with a detached and carefree attitude, but even she had to admit that her moral compass and social awareness left much to be desired. Sometimes, the things she did were downright despicable.
Yet, she had always been in a position of inherent superiority, feeling no need to respect those she deemed useless in her eyes.
She never truly grasped how much suffering she inflicted on others, nor did she find it particularly reprehensible. But when the person she adored so much that her very body yearned to be close said, “I feel so happy being with you,” she finally understood that bringing happiness to someone else could bring her happiness too.
This positive feeling, it turned out, could flow both ways.
It was an entirely new and wondrous sensation.
Suddenly, a wave of unease washed over her heart. She was afraid that one day Miaomiao would discover she wasn’t a good person, that she could even be called a bad person. What would she do then?
So she simply held this person tightly in silence, terrified that the future she imagined might one day come true.
What would she do if it did? Perhaps she would force this person to stay by her side, just as people are drawn to pure and luminous things wanting to claim the moonlight as their own, to stir still waters for their own pleasure.
Or to shape the first snow into a form that pleases them.
These desires were all unspeakably selfish and dark.
Shen Yunmiao listened to her rapid, uncontrollable heartbeat and reached out to embrace her in return.
There was a faint smile in her voice as she said, “I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for making me feel happy, Xiao C.”
“Huh?” Cheng Jianian caught the unusual term of endearment and immediately snapped out of her gloomy thoughts. She took a step back, her eyes lighting up with delight as she gazed at Shen Yunmiao. “What did you just call me? Say it again, quick, say it again!”
Shen Yunmiao had already realized what she’d let slip, a nickname buried deep in her memories, one that belonged solely to her. Now, it was laid bare between them.
Her ears tinged red as she lowered her head and murmured, “Mm…”
Cheng Jianian pinched her cheeks, pushing the soft flesh upward. Shen Yunmiao, who normally had the elegant contours of a classic beauty, now looked adorably chubby-faced under her touch.
“Say it again,” Xiao Cheng urged with a grin.
“Xiao C” Shen Yunmiao’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Tsk, so cute,” Xiao Cheng remarked, gazing at her unusually adorable girlfriend before leaning in to kiss the pouted lips she’d just shaped.
By now, she was quite skilled at kissing. Her tongue moved like a nimble fish, exploring the sweet cavity and gently teasing the soft tongue within.
Shen Yunmiao instinctively tried to pull back, but Cheng Jianian only pressed further, their tongues meeting as she savored the taste.
A long moment passed before she finally released her, satisfied. “Your Xiao C is very pleased.”
“…” Shen Yunmiao shot her a weak, unconvincing glare.
“What’s wrong?” Cheng Jianian feigned innocence. “Do you want another kiss?”
Knowing full well what she meant, Shen Yunmiao averted her gaze in silent protest.
Cheng Jianian, aware of her girlfriend’s shyness, decided not to tease her further. She took her hand, her mood lifting as she happily continued their stroll along the beach.
They didn’t stop until they neared the hotel.
Shen Yunmiao froze for a moment, unsure why she needed to stop, and instinctively covered her mouth warily.
Young Master Cheng felt wronged: “I’m not the type to kiss recklessly. Aren’t I your favorite Little C?”
The once cherished nickname, uttered so flirtatiously and ambiguously, took on a different meaning.
Shen Yunmiao thought it over and felt she might have been a bit excessive, so she lowered her hand and said seriously, “I’m afraid my lips will be too swollen to eat tomorrow.”
“Is that so?” Cheng Jianian leaned close to her ear, breathing warm air against the sensitive earlobe. “I thought you were afraid I’d start doing other things while kissing you.”
Other things.
Shen Yunmiao remembered the items she had brought in the bedside drawer, and her heartbeat quickened abruptly. She stammered, “Um, I-I wasn’t.”
Cheng Jianian gently nibbled her earlobe: “Look up.”
Shen Yunmiao lifted her head as instructed and saw a spark of light flash across the brilliant night sky. Colorful fireworks burst and scattered, falling over the sea, a scene of ultimate romance and brilliance.
The scattered sparks shone brighter than the star-filled sky.
At first, they bloomed like flowers, but soon the fireworks seemed to form letters.
Shen Yunmiao strained to make them out, then suddenly realized what they spelled. She turned to Cheng Jianian in disbelief, who looked back with a teasing, half-smile and said playfully:
“Miaomiao, I love you.”
The words written in the sky overlapped perfectly with the ones she spoke.
For a moment, it felt like a beautiful dream.
Shen Yunmiao nestled in her embrace and replied softly but firmly, “I love you too, Little C.”
Cheng Jianian ruffled her hair and said coyly, “Say it louder, I didn’t hear you.”
She had meant to tease her girlfriend, but Shen Yunmiao, her ears burning, actually raised her voice with conviction: “I said, I like you, Cheng Jianian, Little C, Ah Nian, I love you!”
Her lips parted and closed, the two rosy petals still glistening with the moisture from their earlier kiss.
Drawn by that glimmer, Cheng Jianian kissed her again.
The temperature around them seemed to rise quietly, the air thick with ambiguity enveloping the island as their breaths mingled intimately.
Shen Yunmiao whispered, “Let’s go upstairs.”
Young Master Cheng didn’t grasp her meaning at first, but when Shen Yunmiao started unbuttoning her clothes upstairs, it finally dawned on her.
She blinked, “Didn’t you say it was too fast?”
Shen Yunmiao’s neck was long and pale, her expression both bewildered and shy, like a pure white crane spreading its wings or a butterfly alighting before her.
“Well so neither of us is very experienced. You’ll have to learn.” Shen Yunmiao’s face flushed hot as she spoke.
Guided by her gaze, Cheng Jianian had a sudden inspiration and pulled open the bedside drawer.
The variety of items inside surprised even her.
She dumped them all out, her heart racing, but decided to patiently take a bath first, it wouldn’t do to be unclean.
Shen Yunmiao agreed with the idea but didn’t expect they would bathe together.
Stunned, she waved her hands frantically: “I-I think I’m not in a hurry.”
Cheng Jianian paid no heed, scooping her up by the waist and hips and carrying her straight into the bathroom. The benefits of being tall and enjoying exercise were clearly evident now.
Shen Yunmiao was afraid both of them would fall, so she clung tightly to her neck, her legs obediently wrapped around her waist.
It was tantamount to a tacit compromise.
The bathtub was particularly large. Shen Yunmiao lowered her head to wash herself, but just as she was about to leave, she was pulled back in.
Water surged out of the bathtub.
