- Chapter 21 - Is My Wife Starting to Suspect Me?
After the meal, Ji Hanfeng didn’t linger and took his leave on his own accord.
This suited Shen Yunmiao perfectly. With the weekend finally here and nothing pressing to attend to, she was eager to spend quality time bonding with her little cat, rather than wasting it on trivial matters.
Cheng Jianian, however, was seriously contemplating what Ji Hanfeng had mentioned. While she considered Ji Hanfeng utterly unreliable, his words had sparked an idea in her mind.
As long as she could relay her intentions through Zuo Ying, the possibilities were endless. Previously, she hadn’t considered this approach partly because it seemed too challenging, but mainly because Shen Yunmiao had no interest in the matter and wouldn’t have given her cat-self any room to maneuver.
Now, thanks to Ji Hanfeng’s meddling, her options had expanded significantly.
As for whether she’d be discovered. Honestly, Little Cheng had always believed that turning into a cat was too bizarre and might even land her in a laboratory under Shen Yunmiao’s watch.
But ever since the diary incident, a lingering resentment had simmered within her. She knew Shen Yunmiao would never put her in harm’s way, but human greed being what it is, she couldn’t help but wonder, what if she took things a step further?
The name “Cheng Jianian” hadn’t been associated with anything good since she’d become a cat. If she came clean with Shen Yunmiao, perhaps she could salvage something. With Shen Yunmiao’s help, she might even find a way to return to her human form faster.
Once an idea takes root, it’s hard to shake off.
Little Cheng grew eager to kill two birds with one stone resolve the matter at hand while revealing her true identity. She just hoped Miao Miao was brave enough not to be too frightened.
Unaware of her cat’s thoughts, Shen Yunmiao dressed up her little companion and, since it was still early, searched for a cat-friendly park to take her to.
She was bold enough not to wear a mask, deeming it unnecessary.
Nearly a week had passed since the incident, and most people had already moved on. Even if she encountered a die-hard fan, the blurry photos circulating online were unlikely to give her away.
And even if someone did recognize her, the park was crowded. Shen Yunmiao could easily call for security without a hint of panic.
To Little Cheng, however, this gesture felt profoundly touching. Though not truly a cat, she expressed enough delight to rival the genuine felines around her.
Shen Yunmiao didn’t mind her interacting with other cats, but the other kitties proved surprisingly perceptive. With just one glance, they’d quietly distance themselves from the little white cat, who clearly wasn’t to be trifled with.
Worried her cat might get into another fight, Shen Yunmiao chose a less crowded path.
Colorful flowers lined both sides of the asphalt road, their fragrance carried by the gentle breeze brushing against their faces.
The serene atmosphere stirred memories. The lush greenery and blossoms reminded Shen Yunmiao of the flowers at the sanatorium.
It felt like a lifetime ago back in their second year of high school, when Cheng Jianian had fallen seriously ill. Just as she was recovering, Ji Hanfeng had taken her to visit.
It was then that Ji Hanfeng had keenly sensed something amiss.
The sanatorium was filled with other classmates. The Cheng family was influential, and in their elite school, many sought to curry favor with Cheng Jianian. As a result, they barely managed to exchange more than a few words.
On the way back, walking along such a road, Ji Hanfeng kicked a pebble by the roadside, his voice muffled: “Yunmiao, are you, um?”
He couldn’t bring himself to say it, feeling that asking such a question directly was a bit awkward. Fortunately, Shen Yunmiao was even more perceptive than him and immediately replied, “What if I said yes?”
Ji Hanfeng sighed: “It’s nothing. If that’s the case. I feel sorry for you.”
Shen Yunmiao smiled faintly: “I don’t think so.”
Ji Hanfeng: “You’re not in our circle, so you don’t understand. She really isn’t the kind of person the media portrays. Cheng Nian has quite a bad temper.”
“Oh.” Shen Yunmiao didn’t take it to heart, nor did she intend to argue with him.
It seemed she didn’t think a bad temper was anything to be afraid of.
In fact, that was exactly how she felt. Shen Yunmiao knew very well what kind of temper the person she liked had, an arrogant, reckless, and ambitious schemer.
But she thought it was just fine. It wasn’t because Cheng Nian was gentle, cute, kind, or perfect in every way that she liked her.
True affection automatically comes with tolerance.
But now, Shen Yunmiao couldn’t quite explain it herself. She was often unintentionally hurt, and that once full-hearted affection would wane a little. Yet, as long as a reasonable reason appeared, it would surge back again.
This time, she couldn’t even tell herself whether she wanted that person to wake up safely or hoped she would remain unconscious.
The little white cat, completely unaware, was still hopping and darting around her feet. Shen Yunmiao felt a pang of bitterness in her heart: This is a life. Little C, do you know that because of your indulgence, a life was almost lost?
She crouched down and gently stroked her little cat, her gaze full of tenderness.
Cheng Nian, unaware of her sorrow, happily licked her fingertips a couple of times, leaving the slender, beautiful fingers glistening with moisture.
Wet marks always seemed to evoke thoughts of something less wholesome.
As she continued licking, Little Cheng herself grew shy and retracted her tongue.
Shen Yunmiao didn’t mind and took the opportunity to rub the kitten’s head. Just then, her phone rang unsurprisingly, it was Ji Hanfeng.
On the other end of the line, Ji Hanfeng’s voice was dejected: “Yunmiao. Ah, I managed to get Old Madam Cheng’s contact information, but she completely ignored me.”
This was entirely expected. Shen Yunmiao didn’t want to discourage his goodwill and was about to offer some comfort when he continued, “But I found out something else. I heard Old Madam Cheng set up a feedback mailbox. We can send her a handwritten letter.”
Little Cheng was quite pleased with this. Of course, she knew about the mailbox her mother had set up. However, not every letter sent would be read. The most Little Cheng could do was ensure her mother would open the letter.
By adding the Cheng family cipher to the envelope.
Each of the thirteen families in the Chamber of Commerce had their own cipher, known only to the chairman and the family heads themselves.
She refused to believe that even with the cipher added, her mother could pretend not to see it.
Both she and Ji Hanfeng were quite excited, but Shen Yunmiao couldn’t muster much enthusiasm. However, seeing the little cat proudly swishing its tail and hearing her friend’s voice rise several decibels in excitement, she quietly held back her feelings.
“Alright, Hanfeng, shall we meet this afternoon and write it together?” Shen Yunmiao guessed that Ji Hanfeng had brought this up because he wanted to write the letter with her.
Sure enough, Ji Hanfeng repeatedly agreed.
The matter was settled just like that, but the little white cat’s previously perked-up ears drooped again, looking utterly dejected.
Shen Yunmiao was truly at a loss. Smiling wryly, she stroked her little white cat and said, “Good kitty, why are you so moody every day.”
Little CEO Cheng thought, You never told me you were going to write this with Ji Hanfeng!
But no matter how displeased she was, once a decision was made, it wouldn’t be changed. In the afternoon, Shen Yunmiao and Ji Hanfeng carefully deliberated over the wording to draft the letter. The general idea was that Mercury Entertainment’s artists smearing innocent civilians like this was seriously damaging the company’s image, and they hoped CEO Cheng would handle the matter on behalf of Little CEO Cheng.
Once the letter was nearly finished, Ji Hanfeng hurried back. The Ji family was grooming him as their successor and naturally didn’t indulge him, he still had responsibilities to attend to.
Shen Yunmiao wasn’t in a rush to send the letter out either. After all, without Ji Hanfeng taking the lead, even if she sent it, it wouldn’t make it into the mailbox.
She immediately turned her attention to developing a new cat meal recipe. Left alone in the living room with the letter, Little CEO Cheng couldn’t shake the feeling that it looked more and more like a trap.
At the critical moment, Little CEO Cheng hesitated again. Was this too hasty? If she were discovered, wouldn’t it directly reveal her identity.
Just as she was hesitating, Shen Yunmiao came out to grab some seasonings.
Cheng Jianian: “…”
After Shen Yunmiao went back inside, Cheng Jianian continued to pace anxiously around the envelope. Soon enough, Shen Yunmiao came out again, this time to get some vegetables.
Cheng Jianian: “…” Couldn’t you just get everything at once?
As it turned out, this really wasn’t a good opportunity. Shen Yunmiao kept forgetting one thing or another.
Well, no need to hesitate any longer. Little CEO Cheng completely abandoned the idea of stamping the Cheng family’s secret seal for now.
That night, once she was certain Shen Yunmiao was sound asleep, the little white cat struggled to jump off the bed and made her way to the living room. Clenching a pen in her mouth, she shakily drew a very small, almost imperceptible mark in one corner of the envelope.
In the darkness, the mark was completely invisible.
Only when the moonlight shifted did it become faintly visible.
