- Chapter 20 - I Still Understand You Best, My Wife!
On the weekend morning, the noodle shop wasn’t particularly crowded. Shen Yunmiao had deliberately chosen this place because the owner was kind enough to allow her to hold the cat in her arms, as long as it didn’t touch the utensils.
Shen Yunmiao ordered two bowls of vegetarian noodles and one serving of beef. Ji Hanfeng said with a pained expression, “Yunmiao, it’s fine, I’ll treat you. Let’s get two servings of beef.”
Shen Yunmiao replied calmly, “We’ll both have the vegetarian noodles. The beef is for Guaiguai.”
Ji Hanfeng: “…”
Although he was used to being shut down by Shen Yunmiao, he couldn’t help but mutter, “I give up.”
As soon as he spoke, the little white cat in Shen Yunmiao’s arms bared its teeth.
The young CEO Cheng angrily meowed and cursed inwardly: You clueless fool, the vegetarian noodles are the specialty of this shop. How dare you bark nonsense without knowing anything?
Seeing the cat’s heterochromatic eyes blazing with fury, Ji Hanfeng reluctantly shut his mouth.
Shen Yunmiao paid no attention to his mood and reached out to soothingly stroke the ears of the white cat in her arms.
Her tone remained even. “After we eat, you should go back to your place. There’s no room for you to stay at mine.”
Ji Hanfeng immediately slammed his chopsticks on the table. “How can that be? I came back to help you. Your issues aren’t resolved yet, how can I just leave like this?”
“Life isn’t a drama, Hanfeng. If you really want to help me, the best thing you can do is go back as soon as possible.” Shen Yunmiao frowned slightly, but her words remained gentle, without any sharp edges.
The beef had been prepared in advance and arrived before the noodles. Using serving chopsticks, she placed it in a small dish, then tore it into tiny pieces to feed the cat in her lap.
Young CEO Cheng carefully nibbled on the beef while continuing to curse inwardly at the clueless man across from him.
Unexpectedly, not only did Ji Hanfeng fail to understand the cat’s “language,” but he also exclaimed excitedly, “Look, even your little cat thinks I should stay!”
Shen Yunmiao was momentarily speechless. She tried to make Ji Hanfeng see the reality of the situation. “Hanfeng, what exactly can you do if you stay?”
The cat in her arms, Cheng Nianian, was so furious he nearly lost his mind, wishing he could speak human words. But under Shen Yunmiao’s restraint, he forcibly held back.
Without a moment’s thought, Ji Hanfeng immediately replied, “Of course, I know what I can do that’s why I came back.”
He spoke with such conviction that both the woman and the cat across from him tacitly decided to hear what nonsense he would spout next.
Ji Hanfeng cleared his throat and said, “Yunmiao, I assume you already know that the reason Qiao Jingshu dares to act so recklessly is because she has a childhood friend who’s close to Cheng Nianian.”
“Before, Qiao Jingshu wasn’t this unhinged because Cheng Nianian’s iron-fisted methods kept everyone in check. But now,” Ji Hanfeng beckoned Shen Yunmiao closer, as if about to share a secret.
Shen Yunmiao sighed. “Just say it. There’s no one else in the shop.”
“Wrong,” Ji Hanfeng smiled, his eyes drifting meaningfully toward the cat in Shen Yunmiao’s arms. “Walls have ears, you know.”
Cheng Nianian shuddered under his gaze, feeling as though he’d been seen through.
But Ji Hanfeng’s next sentence was: “Who knows? Your little cat might be a feline-shaped listening device!”
Cheng Nianian: “…”
Shen Yunmiao: “…”
Young CEO Cheng couldn’t help but laugh at himself for having felt even a moment of wariness toward this male lead from the original story. He had clearly overestimated him.
Ji Hanfeng probably found himself amusing too, as he burst into laughter. After finishing, he continued, “I was just joking to lighten the mood. Look how tense you are, Yunmiao. Don’t worry, if I had solutions back in high school, I still have them now.”
Cheng Jianian remained motionless, continuing to lie there, but her mind was already racing through memories of high school. Damn it, due to the limited perspective when she received those memories, she truly couldn’t recall what Ji Hanfeng was referring to.
Unaware of her thoughts, Ji Hanfeng went on, “Qiao Jingshu has a childhood friend you must know about her. That friend, Li Shengran, handles film and television affairs at Mercury Entertainment. The drama that earned Qiao Jingshu her Best Actress award was brokered by her.”
“However, Li Shengran doesn’t dare act too openly. The only reason she’s bold enough to protect Qiao Jingshu now is that Cheng Jianian got into a car accident and hasn’t shown up at Mercury Entertainment since. With no one left at the company to keep Li Shengran in check, she’s free to do as she pleases.”
Shen Yunmiao’s hand, resting on the white cat, unconsciously tightened. Her chest felt stifled, as if wrapped layer by layer in sticky tape, making it hard to breathe.
Could it be that she still hadn’t woken up?
Suddenly, the tip of her finger was gently licked. The little white cat in her arms looked up at her with glistening eyes.
Shen Yunmiao’s heart melted completely. The small cat raised its tail and lightly tapped her with its paw, mewing softly, “Meow!”
Don’t worry. I don’t know when I’ll be able to return, but I’m not dead. I’m right here in your arms.
Ji Hanfeng added, “But I suspect Cheng Jianian has actually woken up. Otherwise, the Cheng family would have been in an uproar by now. Of course, that’s not the main point. The key issue is that even Li Shengran can’t see Cheng Jianian everything relies on Zuo Ying acting as the intermediary. All we need to do is make sure Zuo Ying passes on the message we want to the lower levels.”
Little CEO Cheng sighed inwardly, impressed by the male lead’s capabilities. He had managed to uncover details about her affairs that few others knew. Compared to Li Shengran, she did indeed trust Zuo Ying more.
Shen Yunmiao seemed convinced as well, looking at him with anticipation.
Unaware that his image had just been somewhat redeemed in the eyes of the person and cat across from him, Ji Hanfeng slurped up a mouthful of noodles, cheeks bulging as he said, “Too bad I don’t know Zuo Ying.”
Shen Yunmiao: “…”
Cheng Jianian: “…”
Damn, I overestimated him again. If you don’t know her, why bring it up?!
Little CEO Cheng was so frustrated she felt a pang in her liver, wishing she could speak human words to reveal her identity and resolve this matter quickly.
Shen Yunmiao, as composed as ever, continued feeding the cat beef but couldn’t hide the helplessness in her tone. “If you don’t know her, then there’s not much we can do with all this talk.”
Ji Hanfeng replied, “No need to worry. I have another plan. I’ve heard that Zuo Ying was promoted by Old Master Cheng himself. I’ll ask my family for Old Master Cheng’s contact information later.”
That sounded somewhat reliable. The Cheng family’s situation was complicated. Cheng Jianian had taken her mother’s surname, and her mother was the nominal head of the Cheng family. Her father had passed away due to illness long ago.
Although her mother had stepped back from active management, Cheng Jianian had been the one calling the shots in the family. But now that she was incapacitated, Zuo Ying would surely listen to her mother.
The only question was how Ji Hanfeng planned to persuade her mother.
After all, this matter seemed entirely unrelated to the Cheng family. Getting involved in such a trivial affair wouldn’t be worth the effort.
Shen Yunmiao clearly understood this as well and wasn’t particularly swayed by this “brilliant idea.”
The little white kitten in her arms stopped eating the beef and simply lay quietly against her chest, its heterochromatic eyes shimmering in the golden light as if deep in thought.
Shen Yunmiao silently continued eating her noodles.
She held no real expectations for this human and feline dining companion.
