- Chapter 11 - My Wife Has a Secret Crush on Me!!!
Shen Yunmiao returned very late again today. CEO Cheng the kitten carefully tiptoed around the mess on the floor, feeling slightly guilty as she hid in the bedroom.
Hmph, it serves her right for always giving me the silent treatment. She can’t blame me for this.
Bang! The door opened and closed.
Cheng Jianian’s heart tightened. It was strange, the sound of the door closing today felt heavier and more muffled than usual.
In the blink of an eye, she caught sight of that familiar figure: a floral-print blouse paired with light green trousers. The moment Shen Yunmiao appeared, the air around her seemed to grow clear and warm, as if spring had suddenly arrived.
Her almond-shaped eyes, usually calm and gentle, now held a trace of confusion and endless exhaustion.
The little CEO instinctively walked over and rubbed against the light green trousers. As she moved, a glimpse of an ankle, even fairer than the white canvas shoes, peeked out from beneath the hem.
Shen Yunmiao lived up to her name always clean and pristine, like a cloud on the horizon veiled in a soft mist, untouched by even a speck of dust.
Even a cat rubbing against her wouldn’t leave a stain.
Seeing the little white cat at her feet, Shen Yunmiao’s heart softened. She forced a smile and gently picked up the kitten, cradling her in her arms.
She didn’t chatter on with her usual nonsense, but Cheng Jianian could clearly sense her low spirits.
“Meow?”
Why are you unhappy? Did you fail to give the flowers away again?
I told you not to give them flowers just give them to me instead. Hmph, serves you right.
The little CEO stretched out a paw and nudged this stubborn woman.
But Shen Yunmiao remained silent, holding the cat as she walked to the mess in the living room and began tidying up bit by bit. The vase was made of aluminum, it couldn’t break, so she simply stood it back up. The sanitary pads, torn in half, were thrown away. The notebook.
Her movements suddenly halted. Cheng Jianian looked over, puzzled. Was it expensive?
But it was clearly just an ordinary softcover notebook, with no signs of being particularly valuable.
Gradually, she distinctly felt the arm she was leaning against begin to tremble slightly.
Then came an inadvertent sob, like the whimper of a young kitten fragile and pitiful.
The little CEO froze.
Yesterday, she had thought Shen Yunmiao was already deeply saddened, but she had only stared blankly at the light. Today, however, she was actually crying?
An inexplicable restlessness, mingled with guilt, spread through her heart. Frantically, she turned her head to lick Shen Yunmiao’s face. It would have been better if she hadn’t turned only then did she see that Shen Yunmiao’s face was already streaked with tears.
On her beautiful cheeks, tears fell like broken pearls, scattering without direction. Her eyes, clear as dew in early autumn, were like lotus leaves brimming with moisture, overflowing endlessly.
Cheng Jianian’s heart ached with a dull pain. Her tongue gently swept across the corner of Shen Yunmiao’s eye, licking away the salty, bitter tears drop by drop. For a moment, she felt as if Shen Yunmiao wasn’t shedding tears but an unknown, boundless ocean.
And she, too, was about to be swallowed by this salty, bitter sea.
A cat’s tongue has tiny barbs, and the corner of Shen Yunmiao’s eye immediately turned red.
Seeing the kitten persistently licking her tears, Shen Yunmiao broke into a teary smile. She hugged her little cat and rubbed its soft fur. “I’m sorry, sweetie. Did I scare you? I’m fine.”
“Meow!”
Liar. You’re clearly very sad.
Cheng Jianian looked at her, her own chest tightening with that same dull ache.
“Sweetie, do you want to see what’s inside the notebook? Here, let me open it for you.”
Shen Yunmiao smiled faintly, her eyes soft as if she had returned to her usual gentle yet distant demeanor. Only the tip of her nose, still slightly pink from crying, betrayed her earlier emotions.
Her words made Little Cheng’s heart suddenly race. Something in the notebook?
She could tell that Shen Yunmiao was absolutely not the one-dimensional gentle beauty the novel’s plot made her out to be.
But what secrets did Shen Yunmiao hold? The answer to this question was too tantalizing.
She watched intently as Shen Yunmiao gently opened the notebook in her hands. What could be inside? Romantic experiences, people she disliked, or something even more private?
Slender, pale fingers turned the pages lightly, and a color photograph slowly slipped out.
The photo wasn’t old, the lighting was perfect, and in the lower half, a figure on stage was partially obscured by dry ice, clearly playing a guqin.
Could it be someone Shen Yunmiao liked?
Little Cheng couldn’t help but shift her soft feline body forward, trying to get a clearer look at the face in the upper half of the photo.
Shen Yunmiao thoughtfully lowered the photo slightly. Amidst the swirling mist, the person playing the guqin sat upright at the instrument, her hair loosely tied up. Her gray eyes were devoid of emotion, chillingly cold, with deep-set features, a tall nose bridge, and snow-white skin clearly of mixed heritage.
For a moment, Cheng Jianian froze entirely, and for no other reason.
This was a photo of her.
She vividly remembered it was during the high school anniversary celebration in her second year. The school had asked her to perform on the guqin, but she had initially refused, as she had a pile of responsibilities besides studying.
However, on that day, she learned at the last minute that the current leader of the chamber of commerce would be attending, so she hastily added a performance at the beginning.
It was this very piece, “Three Variations of the Plum Blossom.”
Since it was a last-minute addition, aside from her schoolmates, hardly any fans had come to take photos. As a result, very few pictures remained from that event even Cheng Jianian herself had only a few. How did Shen Yunmiao have one?
An absurd, almost impossible thought surged in her heart.
Could Shen Yunmiao be her fan?
The likelihood was so slim that Little Cheng didn’t dare entertain the idea, let alone verify it.
The kind female lead, a fan of the villainess?
No matter how she thought about it, it was utterly unbelievable.
Seeing her dazed expression, Shen Yunmiao reached out and gently stroked her little cat. Her voice was tender, yet her tone was as calm as if she were discussing something trivial:
“Isn’t she exceptionally beautiful?”
“The moment I saw her, I thought she was so, so pretty. How could there be such a stunning person in the world? Not only beautiful but also intelligent and talented. Before I met her, I had never even seen a guqin in person.”
Little Cheng blushed slightly: “Meow, aow.”
She’s just alright. Have you never seen a guqin before? It’s really not that special. When I get back, I might condescend to play for you, but it’s been a while I might not remember how.
Shen Yunmiao gently touched the photo, her fingertip resting on Cheng Jianian’s eyes in the picture. For a moment, Cheng Jianian felt as if it wasn’t the photo being touched, but her own eyes, which grew uncontrollably warm.
Shen Yunmiao’s voice grew even softer, as if drifting from distant clouds:
“But her temper isn’t the best, just like yours always so fierce and unwilling to engage with others.”
“Meow, wuu~!!”
Little Boss Cheng was fuming. How could anyone say she had a bad temper? This was pure slander! Shen Yunmiao had never even tried to get close to her or communicate properly before labeling her as ill-tempered. What an injustice to the cat!
She simply couldn’t be bothered with annoying things, but if it were Shen Yunmiao she definitely wouldn’t ignore her!
The next moment, Shen Yunmiao’s words silenced the agitated kitten completely:
“But I just can’t help making up countless excuses for her some of them even I know are utterly implausible. But, my dear, I don’t do it on purpose, I just can’t help it. I’ve really, really liked her for so, so long.”
By the end, Shen Yunmiao’s voice choked up with emotion again.
She didn’t notice that the cat in her arms, its entire body, tail, paws, and ears had frozen in place, as if struck by a time-stopping spell, unable to move.
What “liked”???
Seven years!!!
Cheng Jianian couldn’t process this information right away. She tried to calm herself down. It’s just “liking,” just seven years, nothing to fuss about, it’s perfectly normal. Normal, my tail!!!
First of all, this is an old-school romance novel, right?
Secondly, Shen Yunmiao is the female lead in this novel. She’s supposed to go through a series of heart-wrenching, passionate experiences with Ji Hanfeng. And Cheng Jianian herself is the vicious supporting female character in this story, whose role includes but is not limited to constantly creating obstacles for the male and female leads, correct?
Lastly, before turning into a cat, she didn’t even know Shen Yunmiao!!!
Astonishment overshadowed any joy, and an indescribable feeling surged through her in waves.
Little Boss Cheng racked her brains, trying to recall the pitifully few interactions she’d had with Shen Yunmiao as a human, while simultaneously sinking into a deep sense of unreality.
Shen Yunmiao, Shen Yunmiao liked her? What kind of “like”? The kind where you want to date? Or the kind where you want to be friends? No, it definitely couldn’t be the friend kind otherwise, why hadn’t Shen Yunmiao ever tried to befriend her?
It must be the romantic kind of “like”!
It had to be. But if that were the case, why had Shen Yunmiao never told her?
After a long while, Shen Yunmiao’s voice finally steadied, though it remained soft. She said, “Maybe one day, I’ll stop liking her.”
“I hope that day comes soon.”
Little Boss Cheng’s entire feline form bristled: “Meowrrr!!!”
How could you be so fickle? Just deciding to stop liking someone out of the blue? You don’t even know me properly! Why would you suddenly stop liking me???
Seeing her react so strongly, Shen Yunmiao’s eyes curved into a smile. “Sweetie, do you want to see more photos?”
At these words, Little Boss Cheng quieted down.
She watched eagerly as Shen Yunmiao turned the pages one by one. This notebook was truly filled with nothing but photos of her.
Starting from her first acting role at age seven, all the way to eighteen eleven years seemed condensed within the pages of this not-so-thick notebook.
Shen Yunmiao didn’t offer much commentary, only treating the photos like treasures, gently stroking them as if retracing those hidden years through the images.
Her dark eyes were soft and warm, like clear white jade splashed with varying shades of ink. And now, that beautiful jade seemed to glow, gazing intently and quietly at the photos.
The person she was gazing at was, at this very moment, gazing back at her from within her embrace.
