Wen Yuluo still had a prior engagement, so he brushed off Yi An with a couple of words and hung up the phone.

He tidied himself up casually and headed to the usual spot he and Zilan always met.

Zilan had arrived before him. Wen Yuluo spotted her through the glass door right outside the coffee shop.

He waved at Zilan and made his way over to her table.

As soon as he sat down opposite her, Zilan pushed a warm cup of coffee toward him. “I ordered it for you ahead of time, your favorite.”

“Thanks.” Wen Yuluo grinned. It was his first smile in two days, though it looked somewhat forced.

Having known him for so long, how could Zilan not tell? She feigned casualness and asked, “I haven’t been in touch with you for a long time, I missed you to death! You too, you used to share your experiments with me up until recently, but lately, you wouldn’t even spare a single message for me. Is there something troubling you at work?”

Wen Yuluo smiled. “Didn’t you already know I was fired? What is the point of putting up this polite act anymore?”

Zilan gave an awkward cough and took a sip of the coffee in front of her. “I did hear about what happened, but what is the exact story? You are a proper graduate from Xingyan University. How could you possibly commit such a low-level mistake like a laboratory explosion?”

Wen Yuluo lowered his long eyelashes. “I was in charge of the ice-melting project, which has very strict temperature requirements. Zhou Lin and an alpha were messing around and releasing pheromones freely in the lab. Once the temperature rose, the experimental subject could not handle it and it blew up.”

Zilan gripped her cup a bit tighter. “This is not your fault! Even if they had to accommodate the investors, the institute should at least compensate you.”

“They did offer compensation,” Wen Yuluo said calmly. “They wanted to transfer me to Beicheng to lead the third research group and work on individual experiments.”

Zilan’s newly ignited anger dimmed slightly at those words. “Isn’t that pretty good?”

She looked at Wen Yuluo’s expression and guessed cautiously, “You did not turn it down, did you?”

Wen Yuluo nodded.

“Why?” Zilan found it completely incomprehensible.

Wen Yuluo replied, “I cannot go out of town. All my family is in Yancheng. I do not want to go to a place where I know nobody.”

Zilan was silent for a moment before saying, “You could bring Grandma over with you too. A group leader position! You are so young, if you manage to independently lead a project to completion, it will be a huge help to your future career.”

Wen Yuluo did not want to go to Beicheng simply because he would be in an unfamiliar place.

If he went, it would become very difficult for him to see Qi You ever again.

Beicheng was remote, and Qi You would never visit him there. What would he do during his rut or heat phases? He would have to look for new bed partners, and Wen Yuluo simply could not accept Qi You sleeping with other omegas. Just the thought of it made it hard for him to breathe.

Wen Yuluo gave up all pretense and admitted, “I cannot leave Qi You.”

“Wen Yuluo, you have followed Qi You for four years. What have you gotten out of it?”

“Even the villa you live in is not under your name.”

“You want nothing else, just love? Use your toes to think. Why would Qi You ever fall in love with you? The exceptional omegas he encounters every day are more than the grains of rice you have eaten in your life. How can you still harbor the fantasy that he will ever love you?”

Though Zilan’s words sounded harsh, every single one of them was the truth, making Wen Yuluo’s eyes turn red.

He found it hard to breathe, feeling as though he had been repeatedly whipped. “Stop talking, Zilan, please, stop talking.”

Zilan felt a pang of pity. Her expression softened as she said earnestly, “Yubao, I just want to wake you up. You are far more capable than most people. If you could just stop breaking your neck trying to win over Qi You, I cannot even imagine how happy you could be.”

It was not that he did not understand. Wen Yuluo knew better than anyone how cheap he was acting, but he had no choice. He had already buried Qi You deep in his heart, and trying to dig him out would undoubtedly cause agonizing, bloody pain.

After a long silence, racking his brain to come up with an excuse for himself, he murmured, “I need Qi You’s pheromones. I will die during my heat phase without his pheromones. Zilan, you are not an omega, you do not know how painful it is.”

“Before you met Qi You, how did you get through it?”

Wen Yuluo could not say a word. He could no longer find any excuse to refute her.

Zilan shook her head, not wanting to say anything more.

She had said these kinds of things too many times, but the person in front of her would never repent.

Wen Yuluo’s gaze was gloomy, like a bottomless pool where no one could tell what he was thinking.

As his friend, Zilan had already done her duty. She got up to pay the bill, and when she returned, Wen Yuluo still had not snapped out of it.

“Yubao, think it over carefully by yourself. I only want the best for you.”

“I know.” Wen Yuluo finally raised his head. He grabbed Zilan’s hand, his beautiful eyes making people’s hearts itch with sympathy.

“Thank you, Zilan. In this world. Besides you, no one else would ever say so much to me. I will leave him. But it takes time. Just give me some time.”

As if a long-distance race had finally come to an end, Zilan let out a sigh of relief. Like giving a reward, she patted Wen Yuluo’s hair. “Yubao, you will meet a better alpha. And if you do not, that is fine too. We can thrive on our own.”

Wen Yuluo smiled. “I’ll take your word for it.”

After parting ways, Wen Yuluo returned to the villa.

Standing in the entryway for a long time, he had agreed readily enough, but when it actually came to execution, he still had no idea where to begin.

He didn’t even believe he could completely detach himself from Qi You.
