- Chapter 6 - Critical Condition Notice
After making up his mind, Wen Yuluo began looking into apartments.
The second step to leaving Qi You was to move out of his place first.
Yancheng’s cost of living was not cheap, and after searching on the platform for a long time, Wen Yuluo could not find anything suitable. Either the locations were too remote, the places were too small, or the rent was simply too high for him to afford.
He sighed, intending to ask Zilan for help, but before he could send the message, his phone rang with an urgent ringtone.
This was a special ringtone he had set for his grandmother. The melody was fast-paced, instantly making him realize this was an extremely important call.
Wen Yuluo hurriedly answered. “Grandma? Did you miss me?”
It wasn’t his grandmother’s voice on the other end. “Mr. Wen, it is bad! The old lady fainted at home!”
Wen Yuluo panicked instantly. It was the caregiver he had hired for his grandmother.
After getting the hospital address, Wen Yuluo didn’t even put on a jacket, immediately rushing out to hail a cab.
Panicking, he bumped into countless people upon arriving at the hospital.
“Auntie Liu!”
Seeing the caregiver at the doorway of the ward, Wen Yuluo couldn’t even catch his breath. “How is my grandmother?”
Auntie Liu lowered her head guiltily, handing him the critical condition notice in her hand.
Holding that feather-light piece of paper, Wen Yuluo froze in place.
After reading it with a completely chaotic mind, he asked with red-rimmed eyes, “Wasn’t her condition under control? Why did it suddenly worsen? Why did she even get a critical condition notice?”
Auntie Liu stammered, “A while ago, the old lady had to go to the hospital once because of her heart.”
A while ago? Why hadn’t he known?
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Wen Yuluo knew this was a hospital and tried his absolute best to lower his voice, but it still caused people in the hallway to turn and look repeatedly.
He pushed Auntie Liu into the ward and looked at the pale-faced old lady lying in bed, feeling all warmth drain from his body.
Only then did Auntie Liu explain, “The old lady wouldn’t let me tell you. She said that you were busy with work and didn’t want to cause you trouble.”
Wen Yuluo clenched his fists, tucked the blanket around Wen Meng, and turned around angrily. “Auntie Liu, I am your boss! When I hired you, didn’t I tell you that you must notify me immediately if anything happens? Why did you listen to her?”
Auntie Liu didn’t feel good either. Her fingers trembled slightly as she muttered, “Mr. Wen, having spent so much time with the old lady, we’ve become friends. Taking care of her isn’t just about the money. You’re busy with work and only visit her after a long time, so you don’t know how hard every day is for her. Taking medicine and getting checkups can prolong her life, but it only makes her suffer more.”
“What do you mean by that?” Wen Yuluo’s eyes widened. “Do you mean my grandmother shouldn’t take her medicine or receive treatment? Should I just let her condition deteriorate?”
His voice was a bit too loud, waking Wen Meng, who had just passed the critical danger period. Her weak voice drifted into Wen Yuluo’s ears. “Xiao Yu, Xiao Yu, don’t be so angry.”
Hearing his grandmother’s voice, Wen Yuluo squatted down beside the bed instantly to take her hand. “Grandma, are you alright? You have to tell me where it hurts.”
Wen Meng forced herself to stroke Wen Yuluo’s hair, that wrinkled hand full of warmth. “Don’t blame Auntie Liu; she just listened to me.”
Wen Yuluo could only remain silent. He felt awkward whether he got angry or didn’t get angry, caught helplessly in the middle.
“Xiao Yu, Grandma should have died six years ago. Thanks to you, I clawed back a few extra years of life and got to accompany you for six more years. I’m already very content.”
“Don’t talk nonsense.” Wen Yuluo’s eye sockets were already red. “Didn’t you promise to watch me get married? But I don’t even have an Alpha right now, so Grandma will probably have to wait a few more years.”
Wen Meng wanted to say more, but fearing that talking too much would affect her breathing, Wen Yuluo signaled her to be quiet.
“I know you don’t want me to blame Auntie Liu. Fine, I won’t blame her. I should blame myself instead. If I had come to see you every day, I wouldn’t be finding out about your worsening condition only now.”
He let go of Wen Meng’s hand, wiped away his tears, and choked out, “I’m going to go talk to the doctor about her condition. Grandma, until I get married, you are not allowed to think about leaving first. You promised me that.”
Not daring to look at Wen Meng’s expression, Wen Yuluo turned and left the ward, finding Wen Meng’s attending physician.
The doctor told him a lot of professional jargon he couldn’t understand. Wen Yuluo was lost in a fog, asked many questions, and finally confirmed that a heart bypass surgery was necessary.
“This surgery is better done sooner rather than later. At your grandmother’s age, if we delay any longer, I’m afraid.”
“Alright, alright,” Wen Yuluo quickly agreed. “Then let’s do it tomorrow. You guys draw up the plan, and I’ll listen entirely to the doctor.”
The doctor wrote and sketched on a paper while explaining the surgical precautions. “This surgery is not one hundred percent guaranteed to succeed, so the family needs to mentally prepare. Come on, sign your name here.”
With trembling hands, Wen Yuluo wrote his name on that pre-surgery notice form.
The doctor asked again, “Does the patient have any drug allergies, or any other health issues besides her heart? We need to record this on our end.”
Wen Yuluo thought for a moment and said, “No drug allergies, but my grandmother has a coagulation disorder. Before the surgery, make sure to prepare Type A blood bags. Cost is not an issue. Thank you for your trouble, Doctor.”
The doctor jotted that down. “Alright, I’ll contact the blood bank for preparation right away.”
When Wen Yuluo returned to the ward, Wen Meng was already sitting up against the bed.
He forced a smile and reported the good news. “Grandma, I asked the doctor, and the doctor said you can live to be a hundred years old. It’s just a very small surgery tomorrow, and once tomorrow passes, you’ll make a full recovery.”
“Is that so…?” Wen Meng didn’t look any happier because of those words; instead, she looked full of worry. “Didn’t they say the same thing four years ago? It still relapsed.”
“Grandma,” Wen Yuluo said, “Can the medical skills of four years ago compare to today? Times are changing. Once you get better, I’ll rent a big apartment, live with you, and look after you every day, alright?”
Wen Meng hesitated, wanting to say something. After holding out against Wen Yuluo for a long time, she whispered, “The surgery fees.”
“Don’t worry about the surgery fees at all,” Wen Yuluo said with absolute certainty. “I’m not that penniless student from four years ago anymore, Grandma. Working all these years, I’ve saved up quite a bit of money.”
Wen Yuluo’s heart felt heavy. He pulled Wen Meng into the crook of his arm and coaxed her, “As long as Grandma is well, that is my true happiness.”
