- Chapter 4 - Acting High and Mighty Brings Retribution
What should he do now that he had lost his job? Depend on Qi You to support him, waiting in bed every day for him to come back and fuck him?
In front of Qi You, he had already lost enough dignity. If he didn’t even have a job, he really would be good for nothing.
Wang Ran said with some difficulty, “Mr. Wen, please wait a moment. Once President Qi finishes his work, I will have him call you back.”
Even though he knew Wang Ran was brushing him off, Wen Yuluo still managed to say, “Okay.”
Wang Ran’s “wait a moment” made Wen Yuluo wait until nine o’clock in the evening.
Watching the call come in with Qi You’s name displayed as the caller ID, Wen Yuluo’s heart pounded wildly.
“Hello?” Qi You’s voice on the other end was very low, devoid of emotion.
“Qi You.” Wen Yuluo suddenly didn’t know what to say. After drafting what to say all day long, not a single word would come out.
Qi You’s voice lowered even further. “What is it? Why are you calling so many times?”
Wen Yuluo swallowed hard. “Did you eat dinner?”
“Wen Yuluo,” Qi You said with a hint of warning in his tone, “say something useful. I am very busy.”
Wen Yuluo’s muscles grew stiff, forcing himself to say, “I, something happened at the research institute. An investor’s relative who was forced in ruined my experiment.”
“I know,” Qi You interrupted Wen Yuluo, “no need to explain so much. Just tell me what you want.”
Wen Yuluo’s heart hammered like a drum. He had never relied on Qi You’s power to ask for any favors. Every time he begged him, it was always “gentle,” “bite me,” “give me pheromones,” or nonsensical babble when passion took over like “mark me.”
This kind of favor was a bit difficult for him to voice.
“If you’re not going to say it, I’m hanging up.”
“Don’t!” Wen Yuluo pleaded in a panic. “Qi You, can you step in and resolve this? It was clearly that relative’s fault, but the institute is making me take the blame.”
Qi You almost thought something was wrong with his ears. Wen Yuluo had gotten so bold now that he dared to ask him to pull strings through the back door. Had he been giving him too many pleasant smiles lately?
“This is your own affair, Wen Yuluo. I have no obligation to step in for you.”
He had known it would be this kind of answer.
Wen Yuluo remained silent for a long time. He thought the call would be disconnected, but the screen still showed “Call in progress.”
He urged anxiously again, “I know you are busy, and I don’t need you to personally show up. As long as it is someone from the Qi family, it will work. Qi You, please help me. Apart from that incident six years ago, I haven’t asked you for anything else since. It is just a word from you; is it really that hard?”
No matter how humble he made himself, Qi You still used that ice-cold tone to say, “When did you become like this? The first thing you do when you run into trouble is come looking for me? How many times do I have to tell you to know your place? You are not my omega; I have no obligation to handle anything for you.”
Wen Yuluo had thought Qi You didn’t hang up because there was still a chance, but the reality was that he hadn’t finished speaking yet.
Now that he had finished saying the words that pierced his heart, Qi You decisively hung up the phone.
Wen Yuluo looked at the darkened phone screen, still unable to gather his wits.
What was there to be sad about? He should have expected this long ago.
He really was shameless, even bragging in front of Li Yang that he had the Qi family backing him up.
Ha ha ha.
Now both his face and his dignity were completely gone, and the matter remained unresolved.
On the other end, Qi You hung up the phone, rubbed his temples in exhaustion, and tossed the phone to Wang Ran.
“You don’t need to answer his calls anymore. It is always just a bunch of useless nonsense.”
“Understood, President Qi.”
Wen Yuluo moped around the villa in a slump for three days.
He gradually realized that his life seemed to consist of nothing more than his experiments and Qi You.
He had very few friends, practically none at all.
Because all the time he could have spent making friends had been used on trying to make Qi You happy, waiting for Qi You to come home, and trying to make his presence felt in front of Qi You.
He had never attended any parties, dances, ceremonies, or mixers.
Now that he had lost his job, the only thing left for him to do was one thing.
Think about Qi You.
Qi You occupied ninety percent of his life.
But how much did he occupy in Qi You’s life? Was even one percent there?
He didn’t even dare to hope for one percent.
His WeChat chat still stopped at three days ago, completely empty, with no reply.
The sunset glow lit up the entire room, and Wen Yuluo blankly watched Yi An’s incoming call ring until it automatically hung up.
When Yi An called for the third time, Wen Yuluo finally pressed answer.
“Senior brother.”
“Yuluo,” Yi An’s voice sounded very anxious, “why haven’t you come to the research institute these past two days?”
Wen Yuluo gave a self-deprecating laugh. “I was fired, why would I still go?”
“Fired?” Yi An asked. “Why would you be fired? This clearly isn’t your fault.”
Wen Yuluo hadn’t drunk any water all night, leaving his throat a bit dry and hoarse. “The director wanted to protect Zhou Lin and make me take the blame for everything, and I wouldn’t agree. But they still had to give an explanation to the Zhou family, so they had no choice but to fire me.”
“What!?”
Yi An let out a startled cry of disbelief, and a moment later added, “Yuluo, wait for me to figure this out before I call you back.”
Before Wen Yuluo could respond, Yi An had already hung up.
He tossed his phone to the side of the bed, pulled the blanket over himself wanting to sleep a little longer, when his WeChat chimed with a notification sound.
“!”
Wen Yuluo sprang up like he had been injected with adrenaline to check WeChat, but the pinned chat remained dead silent.
Scrolling down, the person who sent the message was his high school classmate, a female beta named Zilan, who was one of the few good friends he had.
Zilan: Yubao, five o’clock, our usual spot.
She didn’t even ask if he was free, clearly being fully aware that he had lost his job. Wen Yuluo suddenly remembered that Zilan worked at the Zhou family’s company.
He replied with an okay, rumpled his hair a bit, and finally dragged himself out of bed.
Just as he finished washing up, Yi An called again.
Wen Yuluo felt a bit annoyed. “Hello, senior brother.”
Yi An went straight to the point. “I asked the director. He gave you such a good opportunity, why did you refuse it?”
“Senior brother, I don’t want to run away from something I didn’t do wrong, nor do I want to go to Beicheng.”
Yi An let out a long sigh. “Then what are you going to do? Yancheng is only so big. If you don’t accept the arrangement and you got fired, how are you going to find another job?”
Wen Yuluo said, “If I can’t find one, then I can’t. Having worked for so long, I have some savings. I’ll just make do for now. Once the storm blows over, I’ll go blend into another research institute.”
“How can you do that? You’re just self-destructing.”
Yi An tried to persuade him earnestly. Wen Yuluo knew his senior brother meant well, but he really didn’t feel like listening to him talk.
Just as he was about to find an excuse to hang up, Yi An said, “Why did the director mention that you might have the Qi family backing you up? Yuluo, can you really get someone from the Qi family to show up? If you can, that actually might scare the Zhou family. Won’t you be able to come back and work if that happens?”
At the mention of this, Wen Yuluo was reminded once again of Qi You’s merciless voice rejecting him, causing his heart to ache with sharp stabs.
“No. How could I possibly know someone from the Qi family? I was just acting high and mighty.”
The other end was clearly speechless for a moment.
