- Chapter 2 - The Failed Ice-Melting Experiment
Wen Yuluo dragged his exhausted body to the research institute. He put on his lab coat and protective glasses, entering the laboratory without a single moment of rest.
A crowd of people had gathered around his lab table, but they quickly parted to make a path as soon as they saw Wen Yuluo approach.
Wen Yuluo’s heart almost stopped.
The lab table was pitch black. The data, test tubes, and equipment he had spent three months observing had all been reduced to a pile of ashes, looking completely out of place in the clean and orderly laboratory.
Yi An said cautiously, “Yuluo, your experiment failed. It exploded at 3:29 AM last morning, and it also accidentally injured two colleagues.”
Wen Yuluo stood frozen in place, unable to move. This was the first independent experiment he had ever conducted, and it was only three days away from success. Now they were telling him it had exploded and failed?
His legs went weak, and he almost collapsed to the floor.
Yi An was quick to catch him, pulling him into the crook of his arm in a comforting gesture. “Yuluo, are you alright? Since it is your first time, it is inevitable that you lack experience. Failure is completely normal. Who has not failed on their first try?”
Yi An was an alpha. With the two of them being of different genders, things were a bit sensitive, and Wen Yuluo distinctly caught the scent of cedar pheromones coming off him, which made him feel slightly uncomfortable.
He wriggled himself out of Yi An’s embrace. “It is different. Your failures did not blow up, did they? A laboratory explosion is the most basic kind of failure. I… Never mind, let us not talk about that for now. Where are the two injured colleagues? I will go check on them.”
Yi An said, “They are at the hospital. I will drive you there.”
Wen Yuluo sat in the passenger seat, his mind a complete mess. He firmly believed that his experiment absolutely could not have gone wrong. He was an accelerated graduate from the renowned Xingyan University in China, and he knew very well that experiments only exploded due to improper operation during the early stages. His ice-melting experiment had already reached the final phase; seeing that it was about to succeed, how could such a low-level mistake possibly happen?
The hospital reeked of disinfectant, almost making Wen Yuluo vomit.
It wasn’t until he and Yi An got on the elevator that he slowly spoke up. “Senior brother, I believe in myself.”
Yi An immediately understood what he meant. “You think someone framed you?”
Wen Yuluo nodded.
With his extensive resume and being an omega, he was rare and unusual in a place packed with alphas. It was entirely normal for him to draw jealousy.
Yet, he usually got along well with his colleagues. Who on earth could have framed him?
Before Wen Yuluo could dwell on it further, Yi An had already led him to the ward.
He purposely paid attention. It was a VIP ward.
Of course, this kind of sudden explosion counted as a work-related injury. Luying Research Institute was one of the top institutions in Yancheng; how could they possibly let injured employees stay in a regular ward?
Since the accident was caused by his experiment after all, Wen Yuluo briefly calculated the cost of staying in a VIP ward in his head.
Yi An knocked on the door and led Wen Yuluo inside. The two people on the hospital beds stopped their idle chatter and horseplay.
Of the two injured individuals, one was an alpha, a newcomer who had just joined the research team as an intern. He was lying lazily on the hospital bed, and as Wen Yuluo scanned his entire body, the only injury he saw was a bandage around his wrist.
The other person was an omega named Zhou Lin, who had no injuries on him at all. This made Wen Yuluo let out a sigh of relief.
First, he bowed between the two hospital beds, then offered a sincere apology: “I am sorry, you two. The ice-melting project in Zone 3 of the laboratory is mine. It was truly an accident that you were caught in the explosion and injured. All your losses this time will be fully covered by me personally.”
When the alpha on the hospital bed saw the strikingly handsome Wen Yuluo, his eyes went straight. He immediately sat up and straightened his posture. “It is fine, it is fine, it is no big deal. I only hurt my arm, and I will recover after resting a few days.”
Zhou Lin cast him a subtle glare and retorted, “What do you mean it is no big deal? All those experimental gases are hazardous substances. Sure, there is nothing wrong on the surface, but what about the inside? I am an omega. If my glands were damaged, that is irreversible harm!”
Only then did Wen Yuluo realize who the omega on the bed was. He was a backdoor connection crammed in by the project’s investors, someone who knew nothing about research and met none of Luying’s recruitment standards other than having a graduation certificate bought with money.
People like this were the hardest to deal with.
Wen Yuluo sighed inwardly and bowed to him again. “I am truly sorry. If you are worried about gland damage, you can go ahead and get any examinations done. I will cover all the costs.”
Zhou Lin sneered. “How much are examination fees worth anyway? How about this. Kneel down and kowtow to me, and we will call it even for today.”
Wen Yuluo clenched his fists. This was clearly an insult.
Yi An couldn’t stand it either and stepped in. “Xiao Zhou, do not go too far. You look completely fine to me, with nothing wrong anywhere. Why are you making a demand like that?”
The intern alpha also chimed in, “Yeah. And besides, during the explosion of this experiment, both of us were…”
“Shut up!” Zhou Lin jumped down from the bed. “You are all protecting him, aren’t you? What kind of soul-melting potion did he give you? Did he sleep with you guys last night?”
Veins bulged on Wen Yuluo’s forehead. Unable to tolerate this kind of slander any longer, he finally erupted. “Young Master Zhou, if we are going to talk about right and wrong, isn’t it also wrong for you to appear in the laboratory at 3:20 AM? Ice melting requires extremely low temperatures, and human body heat can also affect the data.” He pointed at the alpha on the bed. “What were you and him doing in the lab to cause the temperature to rise?”
On the way here, he had been constantly pondering the cause. In a late-stage experiment, an explosion could only have one possibility: environmental factors had been altered.
“Fuck!” Zhou Lin panicked. “How the fuck dare you spread dirty rumors about me!”
Wen Yuluo said calmly, “I did not say anything.”
“What you are implying clearly means that I have a thing with him!” Tears streamed down Zhou Lin’s face. “Yi-ge, I am such a young omega, and not only was I injured by his incompetent experiment, but he is also slandering me like this. I cannot go on living!”
With that, Zhou Lin made a beeline for the ward’s window. “I might as well just die! Let us see how the research institute explains this to my uncle!”
Wen Yuluo and Yi An hurriedly rushed forward to stop him.
Yi An shot Wen Yuluo a look, signaling him to stop talking.
“Alright, alright, Xiao Zhou, Yuluo just did not think things through. I will chew him out later, so calm down for a moment.”
After coaxing Zhou Lin, Yi An dragged Wen Yuluo out of the ward.
“Are you out of your mind? Do you know who Zhou Lin is?”
Wen Yuluo lowered his eyelashes. “The biological nephew of the Zhou family’s chairman, who is the investor.”
Yi An sighed. “You knew that, and you still dared to talk to him like that?”
Wen Yuluo bit his lip and hurriedly said, “Senior brother, my deduction cannot be wrong. Zhou Lin must have been doing something with that intern in the lab that caused the temperature to rise, otherwise the experiment would not have failed.”
“So, what if he did?” Yi An massaged his temples. “What can you do to him? To be honest with you, when I rushed to the scene last night, the lab was indeed reeking of alpha and omega arousal pheromones.”
“It is common knowledge that pheromones can drive up temperatures, but you will just have to swallow this bitter pill. Less than ten minutes after the incident with Zhou Lin, the Zhou family immediately sent people to seal off the area, clean it up completely, and even delete the surveillance footage to fake a power outage.”
