- Chapter 13 - The Disobedient Heart
Zilan inexplicably followed along with Wen Yuluo to pay the six-hundred-yuan fee.
With a look of utter reluctance on her face, she said, “Yubao, six hundred yuan? Do you know how many barbecue meals that could buy us?”
Having secured his ticket and thinking that he would get to see Qi You that evening, Wen Yuluo replied cheerfully, “Alright, Zilan. I’ll have you reimbursed out of my salary next month, okay?”
He usually helped out at the bakery next to the school during his free time, earning a meager wage.
Zilan said, “Oh, I was just joking. What reimbursement? Anyway, I haven’t seen what this Crown Prince Qi looks like yet, so I’ll go take a good look tonight.”
After finishing his tasks at the student union, Wen Yuluo returned to the dorm. His roommates had all gone out to play. Taking advantage of the empty room, he sneakily pulled out the small safe hidden in his luggage.
After entering the password, the safe door popped open, and a wave of chill leaked out from inside.
The safe was similar to a mini refrigerator, storing several suppressants inside.
Wen Yuluo took out one, put the rest back in their proper place, and headed to the bathroom with a clean set of clothes.
Midway through his shower, he injected the suppressant into his vein. Wen Yuluo was actually terrified of pain; when he first started taking suppressants to block omega pheromones, the pain would make cold sweat and tears burst out together. After two years of use, he had long since gotten used to it.
With a calm expression, he flushed the syringe down the drain, got dressed, and stepped out of the bathroom.
His roommates had returned at some point and, seeing Wen Yuluo come out, scrambled to use the bathroom.
Wen Yuluo blew his hair dry, gave a few instructions to the dorm head, and left the dorm.
After meeting up with Zilan, the two of them headed toward the welcome party venue together.
Seeing that Wen Yuluo had even gone out of his way to change his clothes, Zilan asked, “Yubao, are you playing for keeps?”
“What do you mean playing for keeps?”
“Falling for Crown Prince Qi. Did you really fall for him at first sight?”
Although Wen Yuluo didn’t want to admit it, he indeed had fallen for him at first sight.
Qi You was the very first person who made him want to experience falling in love.
Wen Yuluo hid nothing from Zilan, so he honestly replied, “It seems to be true. The moment I saw him, my heart felt like it was about to jump out of my chest.”
“Is it really that exaggerated? Handsome to that kind of degree?”
Seeing her good friend degenerate to such a state, Zilan didn’t poke at his heart like that senior student did, telling him to give up; instead, she encouraged him, “Then go chase him and try it out! It’s your first time liking someone, and if you give up without even trying, you might regret it for the rest of your life.”
At that moment, Zilan had no idea that in the near future, she would regret saying those exact words even more.
Wen Yuluo said, “Don’t you think we are a bit too far apart in status?”
Zilan replied, “Matching family backgrounds is something to consider later. Why think about all that right now?”
Wen Yuluo felt that Zilan had misunderstood something. He hadn’t harbored any wild hopes of dating Qi You; coming to the welcome party was merely to gaze at him from afar.
He sighed. “Let’s forget it. I need to act like a beta right now, while Qi You is a favored child of the heavens. How could he possibly take a fancy to an ordinary beta like me?”
“Then just let nature take its course!” Zilan patted Wen Yuluo’s shoulder. “Matters of the heart cannot be forced anyway. Hurry up, we’re going to be late!”
The welcome party venue was much more crowded than Wen Yuluo had imagined. He had thought very few people would spend six hundred yuan just for a barbecue meal, but the reality was not only were there many, there were a great number of them.
The two of them entered the inner field using their tickets. As the sky had already grown dark, string after string of warm yellow lanterns hung across the tents. Wen Yuluo finally understood why this barbecue was so expensive: it was because this was an open-air venue, with all activities held right on the lawn.
Zilan’s legs were shorter than Wen Yuluo’s, and while Wen Yuluo was craning his neck searching for Qi You, she got blocked behind the crowd.
Managing to squeeze up next to Wen Yuluo at last, she immediately complained, “Damn it, why are there so many people?”
The scene was far too chaotic. Standing on his tiptoes, Wen Yuluo finally caught sight of Qi You sitting at a table near the stage.
He was sitting alongside Lu Baihai, wearing a simple black short-sleeved shirt. His neat short hair was illuminated with a soft fuzziness by the lights behind him, making him look much gentler than when he had seen him during the day.
Wen Yuluo’s heart began to flutter wildly once again.
“Everyone, please quiet down.”
The time had finally arrived. The student union president took the microphone on stage to host, the low-quality sound system screeching with static. “Since there are quite a few of us, let’s keep some order. Every chair has a name tag on it, so everyone please sit according to your assigned name! Don’t run around!”
“Let’s go, Yubao, time to find our seats!”
At the president’s command, everyone sprang into action.
Qi You and Lu Baihai were at the main table, and Wen Yuluo instinctively looked to see if his name was at that table. The result was that looking didn’t help; instead, upon looking, he was left speechless.
At that table, almost everyone was an omega.
Omegas were relatively few in number, and since Wen Yuluo was in the student union, he roughly had an impression of the names of the school’s omegas. Looking across the way, Qi You’s entire table was filled with omegas.
It turned out he wasn’t the only one secretly harboring feelings. The school’s omegas were so scarce they made up only ten percent of the student body, yet five percent of them had turned up for the welcome party.
Wen Yuluo felt a bit annoyed. He had clearly told himself that just gazing from afar was enough, but the moment he laid eyes on Qi You, he couldn’t help wanting to get a little closer, and then closer still.
While Wen Yuluo was spaced out, Zilan had already found their seats. Their chairs were right next to each other, and when Zilan pointed them out, Wen Yuluo was startled, because the table he was assigned to was right next to Qi You’s.
Though not at the same table, being at a neighboring table wasn’t bad either. Full of eager anticipation, Wen Yuluo sat down, only to freeze once again.
The tables were arranged rather haphazardly, and the seat he occupied faced directly away from Qi You.
Damn it, he still wanted to sneak a peek? How was he supposed to look now? Turning his head around to look would be way too obvious!
Whoever arranged these seating positions, I’m calling the police to have them arrested!
Zilan didn’t notice Wen Yuluo’s inner turmoil. With great fanfare, she stared wide-eyed at Qi You, not the least bit afraid of getting caught in the act. After looking, she turned to vent to Wen Yuluo, “Is that guy wearing black Crown Prince Qi? He certainly looks rather enchanting, but it’s not like he is special. Half the omegas in our school seem to have shown up here.”
Wen Yuluo grumbled indignantly, “I just want to ask how these seats were arranged? It can’t possibly be such a coincidence that a whole table of omegas just happened to end up together, right?”
Zilan took out her phone. “Hold on, I’ll ask the president.”
During the wait, Wen Yuluo desperately wanted to turn his head to catch a glimpse of Qi You, but his gaze wouldn’t be the same as Zilan’s. If he got caught red-handed, he would literally have to dig a hole on the spot and crawl right into it.
Amidst his internal struggle, Zilan clicked her phone dark with a speechless expression. “The president says the positions at Qi You’s table were won through a prior bidding war.”
“A bidding war?”
This term felt somewhat unfamiliar to Wen Yuluo.
“Yeah, the closer the distance, the more expensive it is. That seat right next to Crown Prince Qi went for fifty thousand yuan. The extra money from the welcome party is going to be used by the president as student union operational funds. Looks like for the next two years, our student union won’t need to split bills for group dinners anymore.”
How much? Fifty thousand yuan?
