- Chapter 12 - Wen Yuluo's Love at First Sight
Half of Wen Yuluo’s figure was bathed in brilliant sunlight, the morning rays cutting a hazy boundary line across him. His stray hairs fluttered with the warm breeze, and his long, delicate eyelashes alongside his vibrant, spirited eyes were so stunning that the Alphas passing by couldn’t help but lose their breath.
“Xiao Yu!”
Zilan arrived fashionably late. “Have you been waiting long?”
Wen Yuluo’s brow furrowed as a bead of sweat rolled down his jawline. “Did you take a steam bath in your dorm room? What took you so long, I’m about to roast to death!”
Zilan offered up an ice cream she had hidden behind her back. “I ran into that annoying counselor on the way over. He kept cornering me and nagging for ages. Don’t be mad, I’ll treat you to lunch later.”
Wen Yuluo accepted the bribe. “Let’s go.”
To earn extra credits, the two of them had joined the student union. On a glorious Saturday, neither of them could sleep in because they had to report to the student union to fulfill their mandatory duties.
The so-called duties consisted of helping freshmen move tables, measuring heights, customizing class uniforms, and other miscellaneous chores of the sort.
Filled with resentment, Wen Yuluo finished his ice cream right before stepping into the office.
Before his foot even crossed the threshold, a boy by the window caught his attention.
The boy’s profile was softened by the scorching sunlight. The curve of his brow bone was placed to absolute perfection, and the bridge of his tall nose was dotted with a hint of moisture.
Wen Yuluo instantly froze in place, unable to move a muscle, as if he had been struck dumb.
His heart thumped wildly, beating with a somewhat frantic rhythm.
The boy didn’t notice him as another boy beside him threw an arm around his shoulder.
The boy knitted his brows in slight disgust and shoved the arm away. “It’s hot.”
The two of them seemed to have a close relationship as they walked side by side toward the door. Wen Yuluo remained stupidly rooted to the spot, not even realizing that the person he had been staring at was getting closer and closer.
“Excuse me, classmate.”
The voice gradually became clear, deep and cool.
Wen Yuluo locked eyes with him for two seconds, his face instantly flushing red.
“Sorry.”
He awkwardly scrambled to make room for them with both hands and feet. As the boy brushed past him, Wen Yuluo caught a whiff of a mint scent coming off him.
The weather was hot, and as long as the distance was close enough, one could indeed smell an Alpha’s pheromone scent. Wen Yuluo had always detested the chaotic pheromones of the Alphas in his class, but the scent on this person felt cool and refreshing. Not only did it evoke no sense of annoyance, but it made him want to press even closer.
“Xiao Yu! Yuluo! Wen Yuluo!”
“Are you calling out a soul from the dead?” Wen Yuluo glared at Zilan with dissatisfaction.
“Isn’t that practically what I’m doing? What are you looking at? What are you staring at so intensely?”
Zilan followed Wen Yuluo’s gaze, only to see two tall, straight figures walking away.
Wen Yuluo said, “Looking at an Alpha.”
“Looking at an Alpha?” Zilan looked twice more out of sheer curiosity. “It’s still summer, how come your heart is suddenly starting to flutter?”
Wen Yuluo had always felt that he lacked a romantic gene; otherwise, it would have been impossible for him to reach twenty years old without ever liking anyone. But the boy from just now, merely by a single glance, had instantly revived his lost romantic gene and even made it grow.
“Hey, what are you two doing? Are you slacking off right in front of me?”
The student union president let out a roar, snapping Zilan and Wen Yuluo back to reality as they hurriedly joined the queue to help out.
The two of them followed an upperclassman to organize freshman records. Ten minutes passed, yet Wen Yuluo’s heart was still stuck with that boy and hadn’t come back.
He couldn’t help asking, “Senior, can I ask you about someone?”
Wen Yuluo was good-looking and endearing, so almost no one could turn him down. Hearing the question, the senior nodded happily.
Wen Yuluo asked, “Who was that boy standing by the window just now? How come I’ve never seen him in the student union?”
Not only had he never seen him in the student union, but he had never seen him on the campus BBS either. Usually, an Alpha who looked that drop-dead gorgeous would have already made a name for himself on the BBS.
The senior instantly understood who he was talking about. “You mean Qi You? He’s not from the student union; he’s an exchange student from neighboring Qing University.”
From Qing University? They weren’t even from the same school.
Zilan chimed in, asking, “Why would someone from Qing University come to Yan University?”
The senior explained, “Both our Yan University and Qing University are renowned key universities. People are often torn, not knowing whether to apply to Yan University or Qing University. Those who applied to Yan University regret not going to Qing University, and those who applied to Qing University regret not going to Yan University. Students often complain about it among themselves, and then, the presidents of the two schools slapped their hands together and came up with the idea of an exchange student program.”
“They pick the top two students among the upcoming seniors to serve as exchange students. That Qi You, along with Lu Baihai, were transferred over from Qing University. Barring any accidents, they’ll be at Yan University until graduation.”
Wen Yuluo nodded. So that Qi You wasn’t just handsome, he was also the top student.
Oh no, he liked him even more now.
Watching Wen Yuluo’s infatuated expression, the senior chuckled. “Xiao Wen, you wouldn’t happen to have your eyes on Qi You, would you?”
Was it really that obvious?
Wen Yuluo neither refuted nor confirmed it.
The senior sighed and said, “I advise you to give up early. Do you even know who Qi You is?”
Zilan asked, “Who is he? Isn’t he just a regular Alpha? He doesn’t have three heads and six arms.”
The senior clicked her tongue and revealed, “He is the crown prince of a corporate giant in Yancheng. You two take a guess what his last name is.”
Wen Yuluo paused, blurting out, “Qi.”
“What the heck? So he’s a young master.” Zilan looked at Wen Yuluo with a hint of pity. “Ah, poor Xiao Wen. It’s hard enough for him to have a heart flutter for once, yet he can’t even pursue him.”
The senior shook her head. “Alphas are all meant to be paired with Omegas. Us Betas should just honestly play our roles as NPCs and stop coveting those big shots.”
Zilan retorted, “Says who? Stop with the gender discrimination. Even though my Xiao Yu is a Beta, the Alphas lining up to chase him are wrapped around the block.”
“Isn’t that just because they’re after Xiao Wen’s face? They just want to try dating for a bit. Alphas all pride themselves on their little pheromones, and since we can’t smell any of it, after a long time, even if someone looks good, they’ll lose interest.”
Wen Yuluo’s heart sank lower and lower. Just as Zilan said, it was rare for his heart to flutter, yet he could only look from afar.
The two girls chattered incessantly next to his ear, but Wen Yuluo didn’t catch a single word. He abruptly asked, “What are those two exchange students doing in the student union office?”
“Oh,” the senior said, “they’re elite students after all, so of course they have to be treated properly. They came to check in, and tonight there’s a welcome party hosted at a barbecue joint near the school.”
Wen Yuluo sat up straight. “A welcome party? Can we go?”
“Sure,” the senior said, “as long as you pay.”
“How much?”
“Six hundred per person. Go register with the president.”
Zilan let out a loud cry. “Six hundred?! Why don’t you just go rob a bank?”
The senior replied, “That barbecue restaurant is expensive to begin with, and booking the whole place out definitely costs more.”
Wen Yuluo gritted his teeth. Six hundred yuan was half a month’s living expenses for him.
Just as Zilan was about to say that gatherings of rich people like this were way out of their league, Wen Yuluo slammed his hand on the desk, stood up, and declared, “President, count me in for tonight’s welcome party!”
Zilan: “?”
