- Chapter 53 - Six Players in the Second Round
Shao Xibei was not intimidated by Shao Yu’s cold words.
After washing her hands, she sat down at the dining table with a cheeky grin.
“Oh, Sis, I’m sorry! I promise I’ll be home on time next time!”
Shao Yu coughed lightly. “Alright, come and eat. You too, Dad.”
The three of them finished their meal in harmony, a scene of warmth and happiness.
Since dinner had started quite late tonight, it was even later by the time they finished—nearly ten o’clock.
The elder Shao, being up there in years and unable to stay up late, was nudged upstairs to bed by his two daughters.
At this point, only Shao Xibei and Shao Yu remained in the living room.
Shao Yu sat on the sofa and tapped her finger against the coffee table. The sound of the collision wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough.
“Come here.”
Shao Xibei sensed the atmosphere turning sour, but she went over anyway, a smile still on her face. “Sis, what’s up?”
Shao Yu said, “About the fact that you were lying in a hospital for two weeks.”
Shao Yu opened her phone and showed Shao Xibei a photo sent by one of her friends.
The photo seemed to have been taken from a distance, and she wasn’t even the subject; she had simply accidentally entered the frame while the photographer was snapping a picture of a bird.
Her face was somewhat blurry, but anyone familiar with her could recognize her at a glance.
In the photo, she was wearing a hospital gown and being supported by Song Xiuran as they walked.
Shao Xibei’s mind went blank for a moment. This must have been when Song Xiuran was helping her to the bathroom.
Shao Yu suppressed her anger. “What happened?” She hadn’t told their father about this specifically because she didn’t want him to worry.
“Uh, it was… I, I fell while racing,” Shao Xibei fabricated an excuse on the spot.
But looking at Shao Yu’s expression, it was clear she didn’t believe it.
Shao Yu stared at her fixedly. The intense gaze of the family matriarch made Shao Xibei even more nervous.
Yet, for a long time, Shao Xibei couldn’t get a single word out.
Ultimately, it was Shao Yu who relented. She let out a sigh. “Forget it. Tell me when you’re ready. I won’t go digging into it.” If she had wanted to investigate, she would have done so immediately; she only wanted to wait for Shao Xibei to tell her herself.
“Are you still hurting anywhere?” Shao Yu changed the subject, not wanting to waste more time on the matter.
Shao Xibei breathed a sigh of relief and shook her head vigorously. “Nothing feels bad! Look, if you don’t believe me—”
As Shao Xibei spoke, she hopped up and down in place a few times to show she was healthy.
She couldn’t feel any pain, so she jumped without any burden.
Shao Yu, however, was startled, fearing that Shao Xibei was just toughing it out. She quickly stopped her. “Alright, that’s enough.” She was truly afraid that if Shao Xibei kept jumping like that, she’d land herself back in the hospital.
“You’re an adult now. I hope you can show some discretion in what you do.”
Shao Xibei sat on the sofa with her hands on her knees, acting like a well-behaved child.
She nodded at everything Shao Yu said, putting on an “I’ll listen to whatever you say” act.
“Good. Tomorrow, you’re going on a blind date.”
Shao Xibei nodded, and then the realization hit her.
“Sis, what did you just say?”
Shao Yu shot her a sidelong glance. “Go on a blind date for me tomorrow.”
Shao Xibei protested, “Sis, it’s not like you don’t know I—”
“Don’t give me that excuse about liking Song Xin,” Shao Yu interrupted.
Shao Xibei was incredulous; she hadn’t even finished her sentence.
“That Song Xin doesn’t like you at all. You just stick to her like a dumb dog. It’s lucky I’ve been keeping a lid on this; Dad has no idea.”
“No, Sis, why are you making me go on a blind date? Why are you in such a rush to pack me off?”
Shao Yu glared at her. “If you go, I’ll buy you that sports car you were eyeing last month.”
