- Chapter 52 - Five Second-Life Cycles
“Song Xin! Why do you keep hurting her over and over again!” Song Xiuran growled, her anger suppressed but simmering.
Song Xin sat paralyzed on the floor, staring at the red light of the emergency room, her entire body trembling.
It was as if she had suddenly lost her voice; her mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
Song Xiuran slammed her fist violently against the wall. If only—if only she had arrived a little bit earlier.
“You keep saying you love her, but your love is truly disgusting.”
Song Xiuran’s gaze was as cold as a blade, cutting painfully into Song Xin.
Song Xin’s white dress was stained with blood, and her smooth, long black hair had long since been clawed into a tangled mess.
“…I…” I what? I didn’t mean it? I don’t know what happened? Every explanation felt hollow and powerless.
She had truly plunged the knife into Shao Xibei’s heart.
Song Xin’s heart sank into an icy abyss.
Time trickled by. Song Xiuran had never felt a wait so agonizing.
Unable to maintain her calm exterior, she paced back and forth outside the doors in a state of agitation.
Everything will be fine, Song Xiuran prayed incessantly.
Perhaps her prayers worked, for the light of the operating room finally turned from red to green.
The lead surgeon emerged.
Song Xiuran rushed forward, her brow furrowed tightly. “Doctor, how is she?”
The surgeon remembered her; she had claimed to be the patient’s partner and had signed the consent forms.
The doctor said, “Fortunately, the blade didn’t truly strike the heart. The patient’s will to live is very strong; she is temporarily out of critical danger, but we must observe her closely.”
Even hearing these words, Song Xiuran’s emotions did not relax.
After all, the doctor had said “temporarily.”
Shao Xibei was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Song Xiuran looked at Shao Xibei, who was wearing a ventilator and covered in various monitoring instruments.
“Song Xin, are you satisfied now? Attempted murder.”
Song Xiuran did not intend to take this matter to the police; on the contrary, she would do her best to smooth it over.
Sending Song Xin to prison was far too good a fate for her.
She wanted Song Xin to wish she were dead.
Stared at by Song Xiuran’s deathly gaze, Song Xin remained numb, merely staring blankly at Shao Xibei.
No one knew what was going on in her mind.
Within that week, Shao Xibei’s ECG almost flatlined several times.
Song Xiuran’s nerves remained stretched to the breaking point.
She did not refuse Song Xin’s visits; in truth, both she and Song Xin shared a similar relationship with Shao Xibei.
Song Xin had become haggard over these few days, but Song Xiuran didn’t care what she did.
She stayed by Shao Xibei’s side constantly. During this time, Shao Xibei’s phone had rung.
It was a call from her family.
Song Xiuran managed to brush them off with excuses, but if Shao Xibei didn’t wake up soon, her family would eventually become suspicious.
Song Xiuran sat by the hospital bed, cautiously stroking Shao Xibei’s hand.
“Please wake up, okay?” Her eyes were bloodshot; in these few days, she had only slept for a total of a few hours.
Only when she was utterly exhausted would she close her eyes for a brief nap.
She was afraid that the news waiting for her when she woke up would plunge her into hell.
So, she persisted like this.
Outside, the night was filled with thunder and rain, and the wind rattled the hospital trees.
It was at this moment that Shao Xibei slowly opened her eyes.
She felt no pain, only an immense sense of fatigue.
It seemed the “no pain” bug the system had given her was still active.
She moved her finger slightly, which immediately startled Song Xiuran, who was sleeping against her chair.
Song Xiuran snapped her eyes open and instantly looked toward Shao Xibei on the bed.
It had become a subconscious reflex; every time she opened her eyes, she checked on Shao Xibei first.
Caught off guard by Shao Xibei’s gaze, Song Xiuran froze for a moment. Then, her heart was instantly flooded with joy. She restrained her frantic urge to pull the woman into her arms.
“You’re… awake.” After saying it, Song Xiuran felt she sounded too cold, so she quickly added: “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? I’ll call the doctor right away.”
Could she say she just felt very hungry? Shao Xibei shook her head. Her throat was incredibly dry, and her voice was raspy and weak: “No need, I feel… alright.”
Song Xiuran didn’t agree in her heart, but she didn’t go against Shao Xibei’s wishes.
Shao Xibei discovered that the system fragments actually shared a common trait.
Their eyes were all light-colored. To be specific, their pupils were a very, very light shade of brown.
Shao Xibei never knew how to describe that color, but it was undeniably beautiful.
Thinking of this, Shao Xibei called out to the system in her mind but received no reply.
She still vividly remembered what the system had said to her before it left.
Perhaps there was a fundamental difference between a system’s logic and a human’s; the system believed that as long as it was the same soul, it was the same person.
Even if they came from the same soul, they could never truly be the same person.
The system had told her not to feel burdened.
Shao Xibei’s gaze swept over Song Xiuran, and she closed her eyes again. How could she possibly fall in love with someone whose appearance and personality were completely different from the System?
Doing intimate things with someone you don’t love was practically a death sentence.
System, I might not be able to finish the mission.
The next morning, while Shao Xibei was still fast asleep, Song Xiuran called the doctor.
After an examination confirmed there were no major issues, the heart that had been hanging in Song Xiuran’s throat finally settled.
Shao Xibei was transferred from the ICU to a general ward.
As her body recovered day by day, Shao Xibei became increasingly silent.
Shao Yu and Father Shao both called. Not wanting to worry them, Shao Xibei told them she was staying at a friend’s house for a while.
The original owner of this body was known for being a social butterfly, so the Shao family was used to it.
However, after not seeing her for two weeks, they were becoming anxious.
Shao Xibei had no choice but to promise that she would return home tonight.
Fortunately, her injuries were no longer a major concern.
Despite Song Xiuran’s disapproving look, Shao Xibei completed the discharge procedures.
When she left the hospital, she ran into Song Xin.
Song Xin’s face was several shades paler than the last time they had met. Her lips were completely devoid of color, and she looked so fragile and swaying that she appeared pitiably thin.
However, Shao Xibei merely addressed Song Xin, who was blocking her path: “Miss Song, could you please move aside?”
Song Xin stared at Shao Xibei, her voice trembling: “Do you… not hate me?”
Shao Xibei simply shook her head: “I don’t.” Her gaze toward Song Xin was indifferent.
It was an indifference that left Song Xin unable to find even a trace of any special emotion directed toward her.
“Ah Xi… Do you not like me anymore?” Song Xin said this intentionally, staring deathly at Shao Xibei’s eyes, desperately searching for something—anything—to stop her heart from racing so fearfully.
Standing beside her and supporting Shao Xibei, Song Xiuran instantly became anxious. She knew all too well that in their previous life, Shao Xibei had been desperately in love with Song Xin. In this life, if these events hadn’t occurred, Shao Xibei should still be in love with Song Xin at this point in time.
Shao Xibei remained silent for a long moment, her every micro-expression tugging at the hearts of both women.
“In the last life, I loved you very much.”
As soon as Shao Xibei uttered those words, a deathly silence fell over the air.
Song Xin had no idea when Song Xiuran finally led Shao Xibei past her.
In the last life, I loved you very much.
Those words nearly suffocated her. It felt as if her heart were being pierced by countless needles. So, Ah Xi had been reborn as well?
Song Xin had never experienced such a breakdown. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the ground. Unable to restrain herself any longer, she began to frantically strike her own head, laughing and crying like someone possessed.
“Hahaha! So, letting me be reborn was actually a punishment? Hahaha! God, you really have opened your eyes!”
Shao Xibei hailed a taxi. Her sports car was still parked in the hospital garage, but she was in no condition to drive, so a taxi was her only option.
Fortunately, Song Xiuran had brought her a set of clean clothes; otherwise, Shao Xibei would have had to stop at a mall to buy a new outfit.
Even from this distance, she could still hear the sounds of Song Xin’s hysterical laughter and sobbing.
Shao Xibei didn’t care at all. She simply turned to the standing Song Xiuran and asked, “Do you want to come back with me?”
Regardless of everything else, Song Xiuran had taken care of her for a long time. Completing a “mission” didn’t strictly require romantic love; friendship worked just as well. In her heart, Shao Xibei had come to accept Song Xiuran as a friend.
Song Xiuran froze, nearly dizzy from the sheer magnitude of this unexpected pleasant surprise. She wanted to nod desperately, but she restrained herself.
Looking as she did now, how could she have the face to go to Shao Xibei’s home? She felt she should wait until everything was resolved and her status was equal to Shao Xibei’s before making a formal visit.
Song Xiuran thought deeply and shook her head solemnly. “Ah Xi, I still have things to take care of, so I won’t go today. Be careful on your way back.” After speaking, Song Xiuran waved with a smile. “Ah Xi, see you next time.”
She seemed to have reverted back to the Song Xiuran from their first meeting, completely ignoring the words Shao Xibei had just said to Song Xin.
Shao Xibei returned the smile. “Goodbye.”
Song Xiuran watched Shao Xibei’s taxi fade into the distance before turning back to face Song Xin.
Song Xiuran let out a cold sneer. “Ah Xi was reborn too. She remembers everything from the last life—how you destroyed her family and forced her to jump off a building.”
Song Xin’s breath hitched. She looked up, her face distorted and her eyes filled with madness. “Song Xiuran, shut up!”
Song Xiuran’s words were like knives stabbing directly into her heart.
Some passersby had already taken out their phones to record the scene. Song Xiuran caught this out of the corner of her eye and sneered, “Heh, Song Xin, I’m leaving. If you want to become internet-famous, keep making a scene here like a lunatic.”
The Shao Household
Father Shao and Shao Yu were sitting at the dining table. Father Shao checked his phone every few minutes. “Oh, look at the time. Why isn’t our darling back yet?”
Shao Yu also frowned slightly; it was nearly nine o’clock.
Looking at the food on the table, Shao Yu said, “Dad, let’s eat first. It’ll get cold if we wait any longer.”
Knowing Shao Xibei was returning tonight, Father Shao had specially prepared these dishes early. Since Shao Yu had taken over most of the company management, he had plenty of free time at home for fishing, chess, and perfecting his cooking. By now, his culinary skills were excellent.
Looking at the spread of food, Father Shao took a photo and sent it to Shao Xibei.
Shao Xibei’s phone chimed just as she stepped out of the taxi. She opened the message.
Father Shao: Darling, when are you coming back? Dad made so many dishes for you; it would be such a waste if you don’t eat them. (Image)
Shao Xibei quickened her pace and hurried toward the house.
Inside, Father Shao looked at the table. “I even made her favorite sweet and sour pork ribs today.”
Just as the last word left his mouth, he heard the sound of the electronic lock opening.
Shao Xibei pushed the door open and shouted, “Dad! Sister! I’m back!”
Father Shao’s eyes lit up instantly as he stood up from the table. “Oh! Our darling is finally home!”
Shao Yu’s brow smoothed over as well. “Back so late. The food is getting cold; come and eat quickly.”
