- Chapter 50 - I Think You Should Step Back a Bit
Yan Run frowned. “So you’re saying Gao Ge was jealous of Xu Tangran getting close to Sister Yunfan, so he started targeting him? But then Sister Yunfan and Director Hu ended up affected by his pheromones?
That doesn’t make sense—Gao Ge is clearly a Beta. How could he possibly use pheromones to attack Xu Tangran?”
Yu Wenxi’s brows knitted together as she watched several medics in hazmat suits carry a few unconscious people into an ambulance. Gao Ge, wrapped in a towel, was being supported by security guards as he stumbled out, face pale and stricken with fear.
On the stretchers were Xu Tangran, Hu Ye, and Wang Yunfan, all being carried out. Xu Tangran, clearly more robust than the others, was still tossing and turning while the rest remained unconscious. Suddenly, he jerked upright, leapt to his feet, and charged straight at Gao Ge.
An Alpha in a frenzy was far stronger than normal. The nearby guards were caught off guard as Xu Tangran seized Gao Ge by the throat. His voice was hoarse but seething with rage.
“You bastard… how dare you ruin my happiness! I hate you! I hate you! I’ll kill you!”
At the same time, his pheromones exploded out of control.
The air around the restaurant was suddenly thick with a suffocating Alpha scent, like a nuclear blast rippling outward.
Xu Zhaozhao and Yu Chen, who had been watching from the sidelines, inhaled the scent and immediately fainted, their faces turning deathly pale.
Yan Run knew Yu Wenxi would have her own way of avoiding the onslaught.
Sure enough, Yu Wenxi quickly pulled out a pheromone suppressant patch, slapped it over her own nape glands, then put on a mask in one fluid motion. Without hesitation, she tore open another suppressant patch for Yan Run and pressed it firmly onto her neck. Even though Yan Run wasn’t in her susceptibility period, Yu Wenxi knew exactly where her gland was—this wasn’t the first time she had done it. In fact, she had done it dozens of times, each time with practiced ease.
All around them, people were collapsing under the pressure of Xu Tangran’s pheromones. Yan Run could hardly imagine how potent they must be. She pressed her lips together and took a step forward—only to have Yu Wenxi grab her arm and shake her head.
“Jiejie, I think you should step back,” Yan Run said.
Yu Wenxi didn’t understand what she meant.
Even with the top-grade suppressants Yu Wenxi had bought, it wouldn’t hold out for long against pheromones this intense.
Several medics in protective gear tried to restrain the frenzied Xu Tangran, but he was simply too strong. As an Alpha, pinning him down was nearly impossible.
Suddenly, a figure darted in, delivering a heavy blow to Xu Tangran, knocking her to the ground instantly.
Yu Wenxi’s eyes widened—now she understood what Yan Run had meant. She hadn’t wanted her to see her throwing a punch.
“What’s that smell…?” Ji Zhiye and Wei Qin strolled over sweetly hand-in-hand, only to recoil at the acrid stench—like sour, unwashed socks—turning their faces green.
Just like that, their good mood for the day was utterly ruined.
Because of the incident, the livestream was cut short. Many viewers were left baffled, flooding the comments with speculation about what had happened.
Fortunately, the people involved were all under Ji Zhiye’s arrangements, and she had instructed them not to reveal the truth, preserving the dating show’s reputation.
Hu Ye, however, was in a complete mess. Ever since regaining consciousness, he’d been reflecting on how things could have gone so wrong. He was only supposed to be filming the sweet romance between the Second Miss and Second Madam, and yet—first Meng Qieyi appeared, then the Second Miss got injured, and now this outrageous scene had unfolded. It was like something out of a sensational tabloid.
Xu Tangran and Gao Ge had officially become enemies. Hu Ye tried to persuade them to talk things out, but the moment Xu Tangran saw Wang Yunfan, his temper flared all over again.
“Wuwuwu… Miss, my life is too bitter,” Hu Ye complained in private to the show’s planner, Yan Zhi, hoping for a solution.
Yan Zhi, dressed in a dark green suit, was casually fiddling with a small robot in her hand. “I know.”
“They’re too much! Do they have no idea how hard it is for an old man in his fifties to direct this? Can’t they be a little considerate?”
“I’m all old bones, and I still had to endure that much pheromone release—it’s just…”
“Have you finished?”
“Huh?”
“I’ll help get them to make peace. It’s just a matter of time.”
“And now there’s all this gossip online again… I really can’t take it.”
“It’s just gossip. We’ll throw some money at it and make it go away.”
Hu Ye nodded. The young lady truly was unflappable—surely a future business prodigy.
That evening, Yan Zhi invited Yan Run and Yu Wenxi to dinner.
“How are those two now?” Yan Zhi asked.
“Which two?” Yan Run replied.
Yu Wenxi gave her a look. “Gao Ge and Xu Tangran.”
“Oh.” Yan Run nodded. “They just got back from the hospital today. Gao Ge’s neck is still red from Xu Tangran’s grip, and Xu Tangran… well, there’s a bruise at the corner of his mouth. Probably…” She trailed off vaguely—after all, she had been the one to cause that bruise.
Yu Wenxi caught her meaning and smiled faintly.
“After they got back, they didn’t say a word to each other, just stayed in their own rooms. Xu Tangran seems polite and mild-tempered, so for him to lose control like that, he must’ve been really furious.”
Yan Run paused. She still hadn’t asked Xu Tangran about his connection to Lang Feng. She needed to build a better relationship with him.
“I heard from Director Hu that Gao Ge stopped Xu Tangran and Wang Yunfan to demand an explanation and wouldn’t let them leave. Xu Tangran was still speaking to him nicely when, for some reason, his pheromones suddenly erupted—completely out of control. Director Hu came in personally to try to suppress them, but it backfired spectacularly. I have to say, it was quite a sight,” Yan Zhi recounted.
“The medics suspect someone put something in Xu Tangran’s drink—a drug that makes Alphas lose control. And the only one who could’ve done it was Gao Ge,” Yu Wenxi said flatly.
Yan Zhi frowned. With the finale so close, something like this was a real headache.
She took a sip from her wine glass, smiling faintly. “I understand.”
Yu Wenxi glanced at her. She remembered the first time she met Yan Zhi—she’d been just sixteen, newly differentiated as an Alpha, and already the most dazzling figure on campus. From seniors to juniors, everyone admired her.
Her family had often told her to maintain a good relationship with this so-called darling of heaven.
Unfortunately, she had never been able to see eye to eye with Yan Zhi.
After all, she knew they weren’t suited for each other—two scheming minds could hardly make a harmonious pair.
Yu Wenxi glanced at Yan Run, who was still patiently peeling shrimp for her, and felt a warm swell in her chest. Well, at least this adorable fool was her perfect match.
“When are you two planning on having a child? Mom and Dad are getting anxious,” Yan Zhi suddenly asked.
Yan Run’s smile froze on her face. Wasn’t she already working on that with Yu Wenxi? How could these people not notice her efforts?
Catching the awkward look in her sister’s eyes, Yan Zhi let out a soft chuckle and reached for the bill.
“I’ll get it,” Yu Wenxi offered.
Yan Zhi teased, “Looks like all my sister’s money is in her wife’s hands.”
Yu Wenxi’s cheeks flushed.
But before she could pay, the waiter came over to inform them that their bill had already been settled.
Stunned, Yan Zhi asked, “Who paid for us?”
“Who else could it be?”
A sultry, languid female voice, like the notes of a guqin, drifted over from the table behind them.
Yan Run narrowed her eyes, just in time to see a tall Omega stepping forward. She wore a black, form-fitting lace dress that accentuated her curves, her long, snowy legs revealed beneath the hem. Even her walk carried an air of innate pride.
Her beauty was dazzling, her eyes seductive, radiating an aura as dangerous as it was alluring. Yan Run felt an involuntary shiver. What a little enchantress—she had never met this kind of Omega before. Even Wei Qin, with all her glamour, seemed mature but not quite as intoxicating.
Yu Wenxi, also an Omega, simply curved her lips into a smile at the sight of her.
The woman’s gaze swept over to the empty seat beside Yan Zhi. With perfect politeness, she asked, “May I sit here?”
Yan Zhi’s face changed instantly. Before she could say anything, Yan Run nodded with a grin. “Of course. And you are…?”
Without hesitation, the Omega sat down—much too close to Yan Zhi—prompting Yan Zhi to clear her throat awkwardly and inch away.
The Omega propped her chin on her hand, her cat-like eyes fixed on Yan Zhi with a faint, teasing glimmer.
In a voice as soft as a feline’s purr, she said, “Oh, I’m Ye Chun’er, daughter of the Ye family.”
Yan Run’s jaw nearly hit the floor.
The Ye family was a top-tier household in the capital, matching the Yan family in both wealth and influence. What was the Ye family’s young lady doing in A City?
One glance at Yan Zhi’s pale face, and a thought struck her—could this have something to do with her sister?
She decided to tease, “Oh, my parents have been hoping for my sister to get married. Who knew I’d meet my sister-in-law today?”
“Sister-in-law?!” Yan Zhi snapped.
Ye Chun’er rested her head on her palm, her eyes crinkling in amusement. She seemed to quite like the title. Reaching out, she gave Yan Run’s head a gentle tap. “Why are you being so fierce to your little sister?
Sooner or later, I will be her sister-in-law.”
Yan Zhi glared at her, but Ye Chun’er only returned the glare—sharper, bolder—until Yan Zhi looked away.
Yan Run found it amusing. Normally, Omegas fawned over her sister, adoring her from head to toe. Yet this Miss Ye feared nothing and always struck exactly where it counted.
She couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Yan Zhi, knowing she’d lost face in front of her sister, was about to leave when Ye Chun’er stepped in front of her, blocking the way.
“Where are you going?” she asked coolly.
Yan Zhi sighed.
They had only met twice. That such a proud young lady would claim to have fallen for her at first sight was absurd.
The first time was at a joint meeting between the Yan family and the Ye family in the capital. Yan Zhi had walked into the Ye Group headquarters alone and impressed the Ye patriarch so much that he couldn’t stop praising her. Behind him had stood his daughter, Ye Chun’er.
The Ye patriarch had suggested the younger generation add each other on WeChat to keep in touch. Yan Zhi had exchanged only a few words with Ye Chun’er before deciding she was far too troublesome to deal with. They added each other and never spoke again.
The second time was when Yan Run was in the hospital recovering. Yan Zhi had taken her parents to a restaurant, only for Ye Chun’er to appear right after and insist on joining them for the meal.
When Yan Huainan and Xu Chenghuan learned she was the Ye family’s young lady, they enthusiastically invited her along. Ye Chun’er lived up to her reputation—her manners, conversation, and bearing quickly won the parents over.
They even noticed how often she picked out food for Yan Zhi, and, sensing her interest, began openly and discreetly trying to matchmake.
After seeing her parents off, Yan Zhi confronted her directly.
“What are you doing in A City?”
Ye Chun’er twirled a strand of hair around her fingertip, her eyes gleaming like a cat’s. “Me? I came to find you, of course.”
Yan Zhi: “…”
Ye Chun’er chuckled. “Yan Zhi, honestly… you really are my type. Is it so wrong for me to come find my future girlfriend?”
Yan Zhi said coldly, “You’re a young lady of high standing. Have some self-awareness about what you’re saying.”
Ye Chun’er’s eyes sparkled. “I heard you’ve had plenty of girlfriends. Aren’t you afraid of catching an STD? Is that really what a proper young lady like you should be doing?”
