- Chapter 4 - The Return Flight, How Can You Two Be Having an Affair So Brazenly?
The steel beast tore through the morning mist, slowly steering toward the pier.
The familiar briny scent of the sea flooded Yue Mingcang’s nostrils. His eyelashes fluttered slightly as he struggled to wake up.
A second before he opened his eyes, he heard Yue Yuling’s trembling, faint voice in his ear: “Brother, do not wake up yet. I, I am a little scared.”
Yue Mingcang: “?”
Hearing his sister’s voice right upon waking was good. But what did she mean by “do not wake up yet”?
With a very slight movement, Yue Mingcang scratched Yue Yuling’s palm with his finger.
Yue Yuling shuddered. In an extremely low yet excited voice, she whispered, “Brother, the Pure White has turned back for you! We are already at Longmen Port!”
Yue Mingcang frowned.
Turned back for him? When had he ever asked for the Pure White to return? Besides, even if it were to head back, it should not have returned to Longmen Port; all of the Long family’s passenger cruises had long since been rerouted to the New Port.
As if sensing his confusion, Yue Yuling began to recount what had just happened:
“The handsome guy asked me where the medicine was, and I said I left it at home. He asked what kind of medicine it was, and I told him it was a secret traditional formula from an old Chinese doctor and that I could not remember the details. Then he asked where my home was; I told him it was at Longmen Port, and then the Pure White turned back.”
Yue Mingcang: “?”
Yue Yuling continued, “That handsome guy has so much power; he must be Lord Long’s little lover. Brother, you are incredible. You actually dared to hit on Lord Long’s man!”
After a short pause, her tone became even more animated: “If you two are having an affair so brazenly and Lord Long finds out, will he not throw you into the sea to feed the sharks?”
Yue Mingcang: ” ”
His sister did not lack intelligence, but her emotional IQ had been insufficient for years. He had no idea what kind of nonsense she had been spewing in front of Long Yin.
Fortunately, none of that mattered anymore. Yue Yuling had been found by Long Yin, meaning the biggest crisis was resolved. From here on out, whatever Long Yin wanted to do to him, he would accept it gladly.
Just as he was thinking this, Long Yin’s voice suddenly appeared: “Do not stop! Keep talking to him! Call out to his consciousness! The car is ready; we are going to get the medicine together! Your brother will definitely be fine! Speak, do not stop!”
“Yes, yes, okay, I am talking! Brother, you”
In front of Long Yin, Yue Yuling was naturally as cooperative as could be. However, the moment Long Yin turned to leave, she immediately changed her tune:
“Brother, your lover is really good-looking. Can I take a couple of photos to bring back and brag about?”
Yue Mingcang: ” ”
As the first light of dawn broke, the maiden voyage of the Pure White came to a close.
The medical vehicle carrying Yue Mingcang sped along, ignoring all traffic rules and compressing a thirty-minute drive into just ten.
Yue Yuling’s legs were shaking when she got out of the car. It was out of pure terror. They had run more red lights on this trip than she had in her entire life.
On the stretcher, Yue Mingcang wore a ventilator with his eyes tightly shut, looking as if his life were hanging by a thread. But Yue Yuling knew perfectly well that her brother had woken up long ago. Not only was he awake, but he had also written words in her palm, warning her not to talk nonsense.
She decided to play the role of a mute starting now.
Since their parents divorced and remarried separately, she had lived with their grandmother. The place she was leading Long Yin to now was her grandmother’s house.
Near the pier was an area of old-style alleys. The streets were narrow and the road conditions complex; the medical vehicle could not drive in.
Long Yin got out of the car without hesitation and followed Yue Yuling onto the muddy bluestone path.
His appearance was too striking. Dressed in a white suit that was completely out of place with his surroundings, he looked like a white peacock wandering into a junkyard, drawing stares from every passerby.
Yue Yuling walked up to an old wooden door, took a key from under a flowerpot, and unlocked it. Finding the door still would not budge, she rang the doorbell and pounded on the wood:
“Grandmother, are you home?”
It was quiet inside; there was no response.
Yue Yuling turned back to the frowning Long Yin and said, “There is a bolt on the door. Grandmother locks it from the inside before she goes to sleep, so it cannot be opened from the outside. It is strange. She is a light sleeper and her hearing is fine. Usually, she is awake by five or six. It is past seven now.”
Before she could finish, Long Yin decisively took off his suit jacket and handed it to the butler standing nearby.
Beneath the jacket, his well-tailored white shirt outlined smooth muscle lines. The fabric tightened slightly with his movements, faintly revealing the firm contours of his arms.
Yue Yuling stared blankly.
The next second:
“BANG!”
Long Yin kicked the closed door.
A dull thud was accompanied by the crisp sound of metal snapping. The internal bolt flew off, and the door swung open.
Without waiting for Yue Yuling to react, Long Yin strode into the house. In less than five seconds, he shouted urgently:
“Doctor! Doctor, come quickly! Save her!”
“Grandmother? What happened to you, Grandmother?”
Yue Yuling finally realized something was wrong and rushed inside. She saw her grandmother lying straight on the floor, her face deathly pale, having been unconscious for an unknown amount of time.
Fortunately, the medical vehicle was parked at the mouth of the alley. The medical staff quickly brought a stretcher and moved the elderly woman onto it.
Amidst the chaos, Long Yin said to the stunned Yue Yuling, “Grab your brother’s medicine and let us go to the hospital. Move fast!”
The group rushed back. Once everyone was in the vehicle, the medical staff faced a dilemma.
There was only one bed in the medical car. Yue Mingcang was lying on it, leaving no room for the grandmother. The grandmother’s situation was clearly more urgent. As for Yue Mingcang, though the exact cause of his illness was uncertain, his condition had significantly improved after an experienced doctor administered a shot of adrenaline. His rash had cleared, and his breathing was steady. By all accounts, he should have been awake.
The medical staff looked at Yue Mingcang with complex expressions, hoping that this man, whose vitals on the monitor were now healthy enough to fight a bull, would take the initiative to “wake up” and give up the bed.
In fact, even without the pressure of their stares, Yue Mingcang was prepared to “wake.” He had heard everything clearly. He was more anxious than anyone about his grandmother; he cared more about his family’s safety than his own life.
Just a second before Yue Mingcang opened his eyes, his body was suddenly hoisted into the air.
For a moment, he thought he was being thrown out of the car. But he soon realized the sensation of weightlessness remained. He was suspended in the air, supported only at his back and the crooks of his knees.
He was being carried.
Through the thin shirt, the other person’s body heat was being transferred to him. Leaning against a firm, warm chest, Yue Mingcang felt as hot as if he had been tossed into a furnace.
Even without opening his eyes, he knew who was holding him.
Long Yin. It could only be Long Yin. Of everyone present, only Long Yin could make such a decisive move in this situation, and only Long Yin possessed the height and strength to effortlessly lift an adult man.
The bed was cleared. The medical staff quickly settled the grandmother and began connecting monitoring equipment in an orderly fashion.
Yue Mingcang was held steadily in Long Yin’s arms. Every breath he took was filled with the man’s faint scent. His heartbeat felt frozen in time, yet the skin touching through the fabric grew warmer by the inch.
Long Yin, sensing the change in temperature, said anxiously to Yue Yuling, “Your brother is fading! Where is the medicine? Feed it to him, quick!”
“Oh, right, okay!”
Yue Yuling scrambled to find scissors to cut open the medicine bag. She and her grandmother trusted traditional Chinese medicine and always kept bagged decoctions at home. In the rush, she had grabbed a bag without looking. Now, looking closely, she saw the label:
“Uterine Warming and Pain Relief Decoction.”
Yue Yuling’s lip twitched. This was the medicine she drank for menstrual cramps.
But at this point, she had to feed him something. Gritting her teeth, she used one hand to steady Yue Mingcang’s head and the other to pour the medicine into his mouth.
Yue Mingcang swallowed the medicine completely without changing his expression.
Less than half a minute after the bag was emptied, Yue Mingcang “faintly regained consciousness.”
Yue Yuling gave a performative cry of “Brother!”
Long Yin’s expression softened instantly, and the weight on his heart lifted: “You are finally awake. Do you feel discomfort anywhere?”
Yue Mingcang shook his head “weakly” and patted Long Yin’s arm, signaling for him to put him down.
Long Yin refused: “Do not move. We will be at the hospital soon. I will have the doctor give you a thorough checkup to find out exactly what caused this! I need to clear my grapes’ reputation!”
Yue Mingcang: ” ”
After a brief struggle, Long Yin came out on top, forcing Yue Mingcang to stay in his arms.
The victorious Long Yin looked down haughtily to check Yue Mingcang’s expression, but instead of a face, he saw a wide-open view of a bronzed chest.
A button on the shirt had popped off at some point.
With nothing in the way, the view lunged into Long Yin’s eyes. It was large and full, looking like something meant to be kneaded or buried into.
Long Yin had played the role of a “passerby top” for years; most of the time he was just getting yelled at and had hardly even held a protagonist’s hand. He had never seen such a provocative sight.
For a long while, Long Yin could only stare blankly before finally turning his red face away.
Once they left the alleys, they passed a community clinic, but the medical vehicle drove straight past it toward the Long Family Private Hospital across the street.
Across the road, the community clinic was overcrowded with elderly people waiting for it to open. Directly opposite, the ornate bronze gates of the Long Family Private Hospital swung open to welcome their VIP.
The medical staff, who had been notified in advance, swarmed forward. They split into two teams: one for Yue Mingcang and one for his grandmother.
Yue Yuling accompanied the grandmother, while Long Yin stayed with Yue Mingcang.
Nothing was actually wrong with Yue Mingcang. After the examination, the doctor did not even prescribe medicine; he just gave him an ice pack for his face and asked with a smile if he had any allergies.
Long Yin stood by authoritatively, waiting for the doctor’s verdict.
The scene was a bit like a child faking a stomachache to skip school, only to be rushed to the ER by a frantic parent. The child was guilty, the parent was blinded by concern, and the doctor was hesitant to speak the truth.
Yue Mingcang was that guilty child, giving vague answers and trying to muddle through.
Just as they were talking, the ward door was burst open. The doctor in charge of the grandmother rushed in, followed by a teary-eyed Yue Yuling.
“Brother, what are we going to do about Grandmother?” Yue Yuling’s tears fell the moment she saw him.
The doctor turned to Long Yin and spoke rapidly: “Preliminary diagnosis is acute cerebral infarction. It is very dangerous; we must perform thrombolysis immediately. The patient has many underlying conditions, so standard thrombolytic injections are too risky. The most suitable option is the X-type thrombolytic, but import controls have been very strict lately, and we have no stock in the hospital.”
Yue Mingcang’s eyes darkened instantly. If the Long family hospital did not have it, no one in Longmen Port would.
Despair washed over him like a tide. The thorns of fate tightened around his heart, bringing a familiar, suffocating ache.
However, the doctor continued: “But there is one vial in Lord Long’s private medical vault kept as a spare. What do you think?”
Yue Mingcang froze. He looked toward Long Yin. Before his brain could even process the thought, the words escaped his lips: “Young Master”
“Well, is that not perfect? Go get it then.”
Long Yin did not even give Yue Mingcang a chance to plead. He made the decision the moment the doctor finished speaking, his tone matter-of-fact:
“He never did a good deed while he was alive; at least he can save a life now that he is dead. Collecting some karmic merit for him in the underworld for free; he is getting off easy.”
Yue Mingcang: ” ”
