Chapter 17: Is Your Heart Uncomfortable?
When Tang Yin returned, she noticed Xia Shinan’s expression was strange. Her eyes avoided Tang Yin, as if she were dodging something. Tang Yin leaned in and whispered, “What’s wrong?”
Xia Shinan instantly straightened up at Tang Yin’s movement, gripping the glass of juice with both hands. She shook her head, “Nothing.”
Nothing? Tang Yin slightly frowned, then looked at the drinking Fang Yue, “What were you two talking about just now?”
Fang Yue smiled and winked at Tang Yin: “You want to know, Upperclassman? I can’t tell you! That’s a secret between me and Upperclassman Xia!”
A secret…
In the short time she was gone, Xia Shinan had made a secret with someone else?
Tang Yin pursed her lips, a hint of gloom flashing across her face, but she didn’t ask again.
Xia Shinan felt her heart beating so fast, especially after Tang Yin returned. She even felt that the air around her must be awful, making it hard to breathe. She took two sips of juice, but choked when she felt Tang Yin’s gaze, breaking into a cough.
Though Tang Yin didn’t know what was happening, she immediately handed Xia Shinan a tissue upon seeing her distress.
“Drink slowly.”
Xia Shinan’s hand trembled slightly as she took the tissue, not daring to look at the other person, feeling completely embarrassed.
“Got it, thank you.”
Tang Yin looked at Xia Shinan’s cautious manner and felt that something was definitely off.
The King’s Game was wrapping up, and they switched to another game, but Xia Shinan stammered that she wanted to go home. However, Qian Yu had drunk a good amount of alcohol and was enjoying playing with others, so Xia Shinan didn’t want to spoil Qian Yu’s fun. She walked over and poked Duan Xiaofei, saying she wished to leave first.
Duan Xiaofei and Weiba planned to sing all night, but they knew a good girl like Xia Shinan was already reaching her limit by staying until eleven, so they wouldn’t force her to stay.
“You can leave, but… Shinan, you haven’t sung today! Sing one song before you go!” Weiba said, handing the microphone to Xia Shinan.
“Yes, yes, it’s my birthday today, and I want to hear Shinan sing~~” Duan Xiaofei had drunk a lot of wine and her voice was slurred, losing her usual outgoing manner.
Xia Shinan’s refusal died in her throat. After all, it was Duan Xiaofei’s birthday, and she couldn’t bear to refuse. But she had never sung in front of so many people. What if she sang off-key? Would Tang Yin laugh at her?
“Can I sing along with the original vocals on?” Xia Shinan thought for a moment and asked.
“Of course! You can do whatever you want!” Duan Xiaofei handed her the song-ordering tablet, “You can sing anything. Whatever our female lead sings will definitely sound great.”
Duan Xiaofei’s words gave Weiba an idea. She shouted, “Since she’s the female lead, Tang Yin must sing too!”
“Right, right! We’re filming a dual-female-lead movie. Tang Yin should sing with Xia Shinan!”
Tang Yin was stunned, glanced at the nervous Xia Shinan, and put down her cup, smiling: “Sure! But I’m a terrible singer, so just don’t run away.”
“No, no! We’re battle-tested. We’ve heard all kinds of bad singing!”
Oh… I have to sing with Tang Yin?
Xia Shinan stared blankly at Tang Yin. The other person had already leaned over to look at the tablet with her, “What should we sing?”
What should we sing? Xia Shinan bit her lip and subconsciously touched her chest, muttering, “Let’s sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’.”
“What?” Tang Yin didn’t hear clearly and asked again.
Xia Shinan looked up and found Tang Yin incredibly close—close enough to clearly see her long eyelashes, her straight nose, and her lips… Xia Shinan quickly retracted her gaze and focused on the screen.
“Anything simple that we’ve both heard is fine.”
Tang Yin checked the popular songs and found an old but catchy one, “How about this?”
The song started playing on the screen in front of everyone. Weiba took one look and nearly passed out, “The song you two picked is way too ominous!”
Tang Yin chuckled, “What’s ominous about it? At least this song is in the top five of the charts.”
The music slowly began. Xia Shinan followed Tang Yin and sang: “Later, I finally learned, how to love…”
After the song ended, Xia Shinan got her pass to leave. Tang Yin also slipped out, offering to see her home. Qian Yu was relieved, asking Xia Shinan to text her when she arrived home, and then continued to play games and drink with everyone.
“Careful.”
There were quite a few people coming out of the KTV. Tang Yin was worried Xia Shinan might be bumped, so she held her wrist and switched places with her, putting Xia Shinan against the wall.
Xia Shinan watched Tang Yin’s every move and touched her heart again.
“Thank you.”
They got into the elevator, not noticing Chen Li passing by.
“Huh, isn’t that Xia Shinan and Sister Yin?”
“Who? Xia Shinan? The beauty in your class?” The man next to Chen Li looked up and managed to catch a glimpse two seconds before the elevator doors closed.
“She looks good! Much prettier than the little actresses I see at the company.”
Chen Li turned back and glared at the man, “What? You’re interested? Let me tell you, you’d better not mess with Xia Shinan. I heard someone confessed to her and was expelled the next day.”
The man raised an eyebrow, “Really?” He then saw Chen Li’s icy face and quickly coaxed her into the room, “I was just asking. Don’t worry, you’re the only treasure in my heart…”
The two quickly hailed a taxi and sat in the back. Xia Shinan looked out the car window, seemingly admiring the night view, but she was actually watching Tang Yin through the reflection in the window. Suddenly, she thought of her conversation with Fang Yue.
“Upperclassman, do you like boys or girls?”
Xia Shinan had never thought about these questions. She hadn’t interacted much with boys since childhood and didn’t like spending time with them after starting school. She simply liked spending time with girls. Before, she only had Qian Yu. Now, she had Tang Yin.
But… just like she told Qian Yu, the feeling with the two of them seemed… different.
Could this difference be ‘liking’?
Xia Shinan touched the area of her heart again. It was still pounding wildly, almost out of control.
“Is your heart uncomfortable?”
Tang Yin’s concerned voice reached her ear. Xia Shinan turned her head at the sound, and the moment she saw Tang Yin, her heart beat even faster.
“Say something.” Tang Yin leaned closer, staring at her intently, “You’ve been pressing your heart all day. Are you feeling unwell? Maybe we should go to the hospital.”
Xia Shinan instinctively leaned back, hitting her head on the window.
Tang Yin was amused by her reaction and rubbed her head, “Spaced out?”
Xia Shinan lowered her gaze, not daring to look at Tang Yin’s face again. Her head was throbbing, and she was panting.
She took a deep breath and said, “I’m not sure. Maybe the KTV was too noisy and upset my heart.”
“I see.” Tang Yin looked at her for a few seconds, then said thoughtfully, “That’s certainly possible. You rarely go to such places, and it’s normally your bedtime. It’s normal to feel unwell.”
She then opened the window a crack, “Blow some air and see if that helps?”
“Mhm.” Xia Shinan nodded. Tang Yin’s words made sense. Her current series of abnormal symptoms must have a lot to do with the environment.
When they arrived at Xia Shinan’s residence, Tang Yin saw her to the ground floor and then left. Back in her room, Xia Shinan texted Qian Yu that she had arrived safely, then stood on the balcony and watched Tang Yin’s figure walk out of the complex.
She shook her head, telling herself not to overthink. Tang Yin was her good friend. She couldn’t let a few words from someone else affect her.
I must have my own judgment!
Over the next few days, Xia Shinan attended classes normally and actively participated in the club’s filming during her spare time. Everything seemed to return to normal. Except for the occasional attention she paid to Tang Yin’s every move, but that was fine—it was normal for good friends to care about each other! Xia Shinan constantly told herself.
Filming proceeded whenever they could, until the weekend when they had a full day of shooting. But Xia Shinan never expected an unexpected new member to join the club today.
“Everyone met her at KTV last time. This is my cousin, Fang Yue. She was very interested in our micro-film, so she volunteered to join, helping with errands like buying meals. Does anyone have any objections?”
Since someone was willing to help with miscellaneous tasks and buy lunch, everyone naturally had no objections and even applauded her arrival.
“Hello, everyone. Feel free to call on me for any heavy or tiring work! I will definitely strive to be the strong support for our filming!” Fang Yue was petite and cute, full of ambition, making her instantly endearing with her words.
“Nonsense! We’re not those kinds of people. We’ll do the work together and share the good fortune together!”
Fang Yue smiled and nodded, then walked over to Xia Shinan and Tang Yin, “Upperclassman Tang and Upperclassman Xia, please guide me!” She then winked at Xia Shinan.
Tang Yin naturally saw it but didn’t ask. She just laughed softly, “Please guide me too.”
Xia Shinan, however, was stunned for a moment, softly echoed the sentiment, and quickly went back to reciting her lines.
But she couldn’t take in a single word of the script in her hand.
Why did Fang Yue suddenly come? Is it because of Tang Yin? After all, she said she liked Tang Yin…
“I like Upperclassman Tang and want to be her girlfriend.”
“But what if Tang Yin doesn’t like girls?”
Fang Yue was puzzled: “Is that so? But I feel like she might.”
Tang Yin might like girls.
Would she like girls, or would she like Fang Yue?
“Plop.” The script fell to the ground, jolting Xia Shinan back to her senses.
“Alright! Get ready to start filming!” The set was ready, and Duan Xiaofei had adjusted the equipment.
“Roger that, President!” Fang Yue imitated the others and shouted, “I’m really looking forward to the actual shoot, especially…”
Duan Xiaofei looked at her: “Especially what?”
Fang Yue smiled: “I won’t tell you. I’m going to help now.”
Xia Shinan’s hand paused. She picked up the script and looked up, glancing at Tang Yin not far away. Tang Yin was lowering her head, tidying her clothes. The loose strands of hair on her forehead swayed gently in the wind, obscuring her beautiful eyes.
Xia Shinan didn’t know what Fang Yue said to her as she walked over, but Tang Yin’s mouth suddenly curved into a smile, and she turned to look at Xia Shinan.
Xia Shinan’s breath hitched. She quickly lowered her head to continue reading the lines on her script, not even realizing she was holding it upside down.
Oh no, she suddenly felt like her heart was uncomfortable again.
Duan Xiaofei called for them to take their places, so Xia Shinan took a deep breath and walked to the camera position, ready to film.
But no one expected today’s shoot to be so difficult.
The scene filmed this morning was a group discussion where Xiao Ying and Mi Jia bickered due to personal tensions, resulting in Mi Jia cornering Xiao Ying until she was speechless, then angrily leaving.
But Xia Shinan didn’t expect that the lines she had memorized so well were completely forgotten after she started acting opposite Tang Yin. After stumbling over the lines twice, she finally managed to say them without error, but her expression wasn’t what Duan Xiaofei wanted.
“Shinan, are you feeling unwell?” Duan Xiaofei looked worried. Xia Shinan had never had this problem before. She couldn’t think of any reason other than a physical discomfort.
“I’m sorry, President.” Xia Shinan bowed to everyone, “I might not have adjusted my state. I apologize.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay. Let’s take a ten-minute break and come back.” Duan Xiaofei said, “I’ll adjust the equipment again.”
Tang Yin was about to say something, but Xia Shinan ignored her, searching the crowd for Qian Yu’s figure. She quickly went over to her, seemingly only feeling safe next to Qian Yu.
Tang Yin: “…”
She narrowed her eyes, pondered for two seconds, and then stood up, taking a piece of chocolate from her bag and walking towards the two girls.
Friends who grew up together naturally had a certain level of understanding. Qian Yu keenly sensed that Xia Shinan seemed preoccupied, so she pulled her to the outside stairwell to talk.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been acting strange today,” Qian Yu asked with concern.
Xia Shinan covered her chest, thinking about everything that happened today and the incident at KTV.
—“You and Upperclassman Tang are just friends, so I’m relieved. Otherwise, being rivals with you would be especially difficult.”
She didn’t know how to explain her current situation to Qian Yu, so she could only whisper, “I don’t know why, but ever since I heard Fang Yue say she liked girls at the KTV, I’ve been… out of sorts. Do you think I might… like girls too?”
Tang Yin had just walked over when she heard Qian Yu’s surprised gasp and was forced to stop in her tracks.
Qian Yu’s eyes widened: “You… you’re not getting flustered and anxious just seeing Fang Yue, are you?”
Tang Yin lifted her eyes, her lips tightly sealed. The chocolate in her hand suddenly broke in half.
