Chapter 18: She Wanted the Good Girl’s Guarantee
“What was that sound?” Qian Yu suddenly sensed something, looking back as she spoke, but didn’t see anything.
“Is anyone there?” Xia Shinan also looked around.
“No, maybe I misheard.” Qian Yu then pulled Xia Shinan back, “Hurry up and tell me. Are you getting flustered and anxious just seeing Fang Yue?”
“No!” Xia Shinan immediately denied it, “I don’t know her well at all!” If she was going to feel flustered and anxious, it would only be when thinking about Tang Yin.
Qian Yu breathed a sigh of relief, “You scared me. I thought you liked her! Shinan, are you under too much stress lately? Is that why you’re feeling unwell and overthinking things?”
Is that it? Qian Yu’s words seemed logical… Xia Shinan nodded. Maybe she was really too stressed, “It’s okay. I can adjust slowly myself!”
But… Xia Shinan looked at her curiously: “Little Feather, why would you think I like girls? Isn’t it weird to like girls?”
Qian Yu shrugged, “It’s fine. It’s quite common in real life; many people just hide it well so you can’t tell. Haven’t you noticed that your club president and that Weiba are a bit… like that?”
Xia Shinan was shocked: “Really?!”
Qian Yu raised an eyebrow, “If you don’t believe me, watch them closely later.”
Back in the filming classroom, Xia Shinan’s state was noticeably much better than before. After apologizing to everyone again, she prepared to start filming.
“Shinan, don’t push yourself. Your health is more important,” Weiba said with concern.
“I’m fine now. I feel much better after getting some fresh air,” Xia Shinan said with a smile, glancing at Tang Yin, who was busy memorizing her lines, and Fang Yue, who was sitting beside her wiping props.
The two seemed to be talking, but they also seemed quite distant. Xia Shinan tried hard to focus only on the script and convinced herself that all her feelings were just due to too much stress.
—This situation is quite common; everyone just hides it.
Could Tang Yin be one of those people who hides it?
Xia Shinan was secretly curious.
The subsequent filming did go much better, continuing until 8 PM.
“Thank you all for your hard work today. Our efficiency was excellent. At this rate, we’ll finish filming smoothly!” Duan Xiaofei said excitedly, “Hurry back and rest. Get ready to fight again tomorrow!”
“Thank you for your hard work!”
Weiba also said her thanks and helped Duan Xiaofei pack up the camera and other equipment.
Xia Shinan stood by, watching the two of them chatting and laughing. It didn’t seem particularly special; ordinary friends also act this way, don’t they?
“What are you looking at?” Tang Yin’s voice suddenly came from beside her, startling Xia Shinan. She turned to look at Tang Yin and realized the other person was very close—if she took even a small step back, she would bump into her.
“I’m not looking at anything,” Xia Shinan’s eyes flickered away, but she saw Fang Yue approaching them, holding a stack of materials, and her heart suddenly felt uneasy.
“Upperclassmen, are you heading back to the dorm?” Fang Yue smiled, “We’re going in the same direction. Let’s walk together!”
Tang Yin glanced at Fang Yue and was about to refuse, but she heard Xia Shinan say, “No.”
Both girls looked at Xia Shinan. Fang Yue smiled with curved eyes: “Why not?”
Xia Shinan stammered, suddenly unable to come up with a valid reason.
“Because she doesn’t live on campus, and the filming ended very late today. I’m taking her home first,” Tang Yin finished her sentence, looking at Xia Shinan as she spoke.
A hint of disappointment flashed across Fang Yue’s face. She rolled her eyes and looked at Xia Shinan, speaking quietly, “I see. Your bond is really good, Upperclassmen.”
Tang Yin raised an eyebrow and also glanced at Xia Shinan: “Yes, it’s not bad.”
Xia Shinan lowered her head, feeling flustered by Fang Yue’s remark. Yet, for some unknown reason, a sliver of sunlight broke through the dark clouds in her heart because of Tang Yin’s answer.
“We’re leaving now. See you tomorrow,” Tang Yin grabbed Xia Shinan’s wrist and led the way out.
“See you tomorrow,” Fang Yue smiled in response, standing still and watching the two leave in silence.
“Hey… where’s Xia Shinan?” Qian Yu returned from the restroom and scanned the room, finding her friend gone.
“Upperclassman Xia and Upperclassman Tang left first,” Fang Yue blinked, “Didn’t they tell you when they left?”
Qian Yu pursed her lips, giving Fang Yue a deep look, feeling that the girl’s forced smile looked strange. But then she put her hands on her hips and pretended to be angry: “They didn’t tell me? That’s too much!”
Xia Shinan was led by Tang Yin, walking leisurely toward the school gate.
It was almost May, and the weather was getting hotter. The night breeze carried a sense of heat. There were many students walking under the streetlights, their laughter filling the air, but Xia Shinan felt as if she and Tang Yin were separated by an invisible glass dome, unable to hear anything.
She looked at Tang Yin’s profile. Her heart hammered thump-thump non-stop, feeling like it was about to jump out. Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore and said, “Tang Yin, slow down.”
Tang Yin heard her voice and slowed down.
After taking a deep breath, Xia Shinan slowly said, “Thank you for walking me home.”
Thanks?
Tang Yin smiled, “Didn’t you ask me to walk you home?”
Xia Shinan heard her laugh and naturally understood she was referring to the earlier incident. She suddenly remembered Fang Yue hovering around Tang Yin all day, trying to stop herself from thinking about it, but now that filming was over, she couldn’t resist.
“Tang Yin, I have a question for you.”
Tang Yin looked at her and hummed an affirmation.
Xia Shinan took a deep breath, “It’s just… what do you think of Fang Yue…?”
What about Fang Yue? Tang Yin carefully considered Xia Shinan’s question, and the smile on her face gradually faded, “Why do you ask? What’s wrong with her?”
Xia Shinan thought for a moment: “I just find that underclassman quite interesting. I wonder if you feel the same way.”
Interesting?
Tang Yin quietly looked at Xia Shinan, “So, you’re going to become good friends with her too?”
She had put so much effort into joining the club just to have this contact with Xia Shinan, and Fang Yue… What gave her the right? Or was Xia Shinan’s standard for making friends so casual that any gentle girl could become her friend?
Thinking this, Tang Yin felt an inexplicable irritation.
Xia Shinan already had her childhood best friend, Qian Yu, and Tang Yin couldn’t say or do anything about that. But now there was an underclassman who wanted to move in after her?
Xia Shinan was taken aback, not understanding why Tang Yin would say that, but for some reason, she felt that Tang Yin was unhappy.
“I was just asking you. I didn’t mean anything else. If you don’t like this topic, I won’t ask.”
“Mhm.” Tang Yin lowered her eyelids, looking at the bewildered Xia Shinan. A sudden impulse arose in her: she wanted the good girl’s guarantee.
“Shinan, can you promise me one thing?”
Xia Shinan immediately nodded: “Tell me. I’ll promise anything I can do.”
Tang Yin gently raised her lips, “Promise me that, in your heart, I will always be the most important one.”
Xia Shinan froze. The wind whistled past her ears, and her heart skipped several beats.
Did she mishear?
“Say something.” Tang Yin didn’t like her spacing out at this moment, her beautiful eyes intently focused on her.
Just then, a man in a suit suddenly walked over.
“Miss, why haven’t you returned yet? Madam is waiting for you.”
Xia Shinan was already tense from Tang Yin’s words, but the moment she saw Assistant Li the next second, her expression changed to panic. Why did Mom come?
Tang Yin’s smile also froze. Her gaze was like an ice blade stabbing the man, and a hint of gloom flashed across her face.
Madam… could it be Mrs. Xia, her “mother”?
