Chapter 16: Then… I Would Choose Tang Yin, Upperclassman…
Monday’s afternoon classes were jam-packed, and the last class ended just before six. Xia Shinan checked her phone; the group chat was buzzing with messages, all discussing the plan to go singing at KTV that evening.
It was Duan Xiaofei’s birthday today. The KTV chosen was the nearest one to University A, only a ten-minute taxi ride away.
Let’s meet at Room 666 tonight at 8 PM! Drinks are fully stocked, and the room is reserved until tomorrow morning. Play as long as you like!
All hail the President!
The President is the best!
Xia Shinan stood at the entrance of the academic building, looking at the chat history while waiting for Qian Yu. They had agreed to eat dinner together and then go to the birthday party.
“Is that Xia Shinan?”
“I heard the people in her dorm who offended her are having a miserable time now!”
“No way? I saw her roommate this morning in class. She looked fine…”
“Oh, I shouldn’t say too much. Keep your voice down, or we’ll be the next ones to suffer.”
Xia Shinan pursed her lips and looked at her phone, not saying anything. She had grown used to hearing people whisper about her in class recently. Still, hearing it made her a little sad.
Fortunately, Qian Yu rushed over from another academic building quickly. Her cheeks were flushed: “Have you been waiting long?”
“Of course not.” Xia Shinan smiled and shook her head, “You don’t have to rush so much. Are you hungry? Let’s go eat!”
“Let’s go!” Qian Yu linked arms with her, and the two walked side by side toward the school gate. “What about Tang Yin? Is she going tonight?”
Xia Shinan recalled her chat with Tang Yin last night, “Mhm! She’s going! But she said she won’t eat with us. She’s working at the coffee shop until 7:30 PM and will go straight there.”
“She works so hard. It seems like she has a part-time job during all her free time.” Qian Yu suddenly remembered their argument the other day: “But how did you two make up? Tang Yin was so angry that day. I even thought she was related to your roommate. Now you’ve suddenly made up, and you know her schedule so clearly!”
Xia Shinan narrowed her eyes and smiled: “Maybe it’s fate! People who are meant to be good friends will definitely be good friends!”
Qian Yu snorted, “Oh~ You two are good friends now, but what about me? Is my status in your heart no longer secure?”
“Of course not! You and her… are different,” Xia Shinan said after thinking for a moment.
“How are we different?” Qian Yu walked in front of her, tilting her head to ask.
How are they different? Xia Shinan seriously thought about it. She couldn’t really articulate it, but it just felt different.
“I don’t know,” Xia Shinan answered truthfully, “Anyway, you’re my best friend, the best friend I’ve had since childhood. That won’t change. As for Tang Yin…”
She is more special.
“Why are you being so hesitant?” Qian Yu looked at her curiously, but didn’t press further. However, she still found Tang Yin’s change in attitude very strange.
The two took a taxi directly to a shopping mall near the KTV to eat. After dinner, they shopped around and bought a gift. When it was nearly time, they headed to the KTV.
Duan Xiaofei, as the protagonist of the day, arrived early. Weiba booked the private room and decorated it. A banner on the wall boldly read: “Happy Duan Xiaofei’s Hatch Day!” Various colored balloons adorned the surroundings, making the atmosphere lively.
Duan Xiaofei had also dressed up specially today. Unlike her usual simple attire, she was wearing a dark blue dress and black heels, looking like a mature upperclassman.
When Xia Shinan and Qian Yu entered the private room, Duan Xiaofei and Weiba were singing “Good Fortune Arrives” together. Many other students from the club had also arrived and were clapping and cheering them on.
Duan Xiaofei spotted Xia Shinan immediately, grabbed the microphone, and shouted: “Welcome our sparkling female lead!”
Xia Shinan was stunned for two seconds before being ushered in. A microphone was thrust into her hand, and she looked at everyone awkwardly: “I don’t know how to sing ‘Good Fortune Arrives.'”
“No, no. We just want you to say a few words,” Weiba explained from the side.
“Oh, oh…” Xia Shinan touched her ear, feeling a little embarrassed, “Happy birthday to the President. I wish you happiness every day, and I also wish our micro-film wins first place this time.”
Duan Xiaofei hugged Xia Shinan excitedly, “That’s the best wish I’ve ever heard! By the way, Shinan, you and Tang Yin really have chemistry. She wished me the same thing!”
Xia Shinan blinked, “Tang Yin is already here?” Why didn’t she tell me she arrived?
“She came! But…” Duan Xiaofei looked around, “Strange, where did she go?”
Tang Yin had just arrived when she received a call from her grandmother. Seeing that everyone was happily singing, she quietly went out and found a quiet corner to answer.
The elderly woman talked about the unpredictable weather recently, nagging Tang Yin to keep warm and not be greedy for coolness.
They talked for a long time before hanging up. Tang Yin planned to return to the private room but ran into the girl who was handing out flyers at the basketball court the other day—Fang Yue.
Fang Yue turned out to be Duan Xiaofei’s cousin. Of course, she was here for the birthday party.
“What a coincidence, upperclassman! We can play together!”
Fang Yue walked closely beside Tang Yin, an uncontainable joy on her face.
Tang Yin smiled politely and brought Fang Yue to the private room. After opening the door, her gaze immediately fixed on Xia Shinan, who was sitting on the sofa, smiling at Qian Yu singing and listening intently.
“Tang Yin! Why did you suddenly sneak out?” Duan Xiaofei saw her and shouted loudly, “You left without a word. You have to drink a penalty cup!”
“Got it, I owe you one.” Tang Yin smiled and walked over to sit next to Xia Shinan, “When did you arrive?”
Xia Shinan thought for a moment, “Around the time you went out.” She then glanced at Tang Yin, her tone a little spoiled: “I sent you a message, but you didn’t reply.”
Did I? Tang Yin took out her phone and checked. There really was a message.
“I was on the phone with family, so I didn’t check WeChat,” Tang Yin explained, “Otherwise, I would have definitely met you at the door.”
“Wow, what did I just hear?” Qian Yu, who had just finished singing a song, leaned over, “She’d only pick up Xia Shinan and not me? Tang Yin, Shinan’s relationship with you is getting better and better. If this continues, I’ll be jealous!”
“That’s not true!” Xia Shinan grabbed Qian Yu’s hand, “You’re my best friend.”
Tang Yin raised an eyebrow upon hearing that: “What about me? Am I ranked second?”
Qian Yu hugged Xia Shinan’s arm and snorted: “What else? You two have only known each other for so long, and you want to fight for first place? Xia Shinan, tell her who is the most important person to you.”
Xia Shinan looked left and right, not knowing what to do for a moment. Her face wrinkled up: “You’re both very important. You’re both friends…”
Tang Yin looked at her thoughtfully, then suddenly smiled, “Got it. Qian Yu is your best friend. I won’t steal her spot.”
Duan Xiaofei came over with a deck of playing cards, saving the embarrassed Xia Shinan.
“Come on, let’s play a game! The loser drinks!”
“Drinking is boring. Let’s play something else, like Truth or Dare, or the loser has to sing a song that we choose.”
“That works! Anyway, the night is still young. We don’t have to worry about running out of drinks!”
The game was a simple King’s Game. The person who drew the King could order any numbered card to do something or ask a question. If they refused, they had to drink or sing.
The King also had one chance to ask the people present about their card suit for analysis. However, the person being asked could also lie; it was entirely up to them.
As Weiba explained the rules of the game, an extra person sat down to Tang Yin’s left.
Fang Yue looked at her with a grin, “Upperclassman, is it okay for us girls to sit together?”
Tang Yin shrugged, indicating that she didn’t mind. She then looked at Xia Shinan on her right, “Do you want to play?”
Xia Shinan smiled and nodded: “I’ve never played before.”
Not only had she never played, but she rarely went to KTV, so she was very excited right now, finding everything interesting.
The King for the first round was designated as Duan Xiaofei, a birthday privilege given by Weiba. After the cards were dealt, everyone was given time to look at their cards, and then Duan Xiaofei began to ask questions.
“Ahem, let me think. Let’s start with our female lead.” Duan Xiaofei chuckled mischievously, “Student Xia Shinan, is your card an odd or even number?”
Xia Shinan hesitated for a while, then said: “Even.”
“Okay!” Duan Xiaofei immediately declared: “All students with even numbers stand up, say one compliment about me, and drink the drink in front of you.”
Everyone was stunned, then protested: “That’s a group attack!”
Duan Xiaofei happily swayed: “No arguing. Hurry up, respect the game rules.” But then, she saw Xia Shinan and Qian Yu both stand up.
Duan Xiaofei was surprised: “Shinan, isn’t your card an odd number?”
Xia Shinan shook her head, revealing her card, “I told you, mine is an even number.”
Duan Xiaofei touched her nose awkwardly, “I thought you were lying. Well… maybe you don’t have to drink.”
“President, that’s unfair treatment!” someone started to protest, “Exactly, unfair treatment! Even Xia Shinan has to drink.”
Xia Shinan quickly nodded: “No, no. I can do it!” She said, raising the glass of beer in front of her, “First, I want to compliment our cute and powerful President. You work diligently for the film club, and you will definitely achieve your dream of becoming a great director!”
After speaking, she was about to drink the beer in her hand. Qian Yu was about to stop her, but unexpectedly, Tang Yin’s hand was faster. She grabbed the glass and drank it.
“Tang Yin…” Xia Shinan was stunned, “Why did you drink it?”
Tang Yin looked at her and smiled, “Drinking this one glass is nothing to me, but what if you get drunk? Everyone will have to take care of you and send you home.”
“That’s true…”
“Tang Yin is right. You can’t drink. Don’t drink!” Qian Yu immediately took Tang Yin’s side.
Weiba saw Tang Yin’s actions and had a look of “I’m shipping this again” on her face. Duan Xiaofei let Xia Shinan off the hook, as she hadn’t said that no one was allowed to help. She then told the others not to cheat and to take their turns.
After Xia Shinan sat down, Tang Yin handed her a glass of orange juice, “Drink this.”
Xia Shinan nodded. After thinking for a moment, she whispered to Tang Yin: “Although I can’t drink, sometimes I want to try. I’m an adult, so I can try, right?”
Tang Yin curved her lips into a smile, “Beer doesn’t taste good. Next time, I’ll take you to the bar from the other day and let Ming Jing mix a good-tasting drink for you.”
Xia Shinan’s eyes curved with her smile, “Okay.”
The game continued. The King for the following rounds was drawn randomly. At first, everyone was sensible, only having to sing, dance, or perform a talent, but later, the direction gradually changed.
For example, Weiba was asked what kind of person she liked, and she stammered that she liked straightforward and cheerful people.
For example, Qian Yu was ordered as a dare to go outside and shout “I’m a beauty” three times. Qian Yu found it too embarrassing, so she chose to sing “Happy Birthday” in a baby voice and chugged a full glass of wine to complete the penalty.
Weiba: “It’s finally my turn to be King! Hmm… Number 3, if you had to choose one person present as your object of affection, who would you choose?”
This question was more exciting than the previous ones. Everyone started to get hyped, “Who is Number 3! Raise your hand quickly!”
Amidst the noise, a small hand was weakly raised next to Tang Yin, “I’m Number 3.”
Everyone looked towards Tang Yin’s left, where a girl in a yellow plaid dress sat. It was Fang Yue.
Weiba: “Oh, it’s the President’s cousin! Cousin, tell us, if you had to choose someone to be your boyfriend, who would you choose?”
Fang Yue looked at everyone, blinked, and mischievously asked back: “Can I only choose a boyfriend?”
Weiba was stunned for two seconds and immediately understood: “You can choose a girl too! We are free to love, and our orientation is free.”
Fang Yue pursed her lips, then lightly pointed: “Then… I would choose Tang Yin, upperclassman.”
“Wow!”
The crowd gasped, and all eyes turned to Tang Yin. Xia Shinan was also shocked, looking at Tang Yin and then at Fang Yue.
The underclassman chose Tang Yin? Why would she choose Tang Yin? Does she… like Tang Yin?
Tang Yin was about to drink when she heard Fang Yue’s answer, and her hand shook, spilling the drink all over the table.
“Tang Yin, are you shy?!”
“President, I didn’t expect your cousin to be so bold. Is this an on-the-spot confession?”
Tang Yin used a tissue to wipe the table and said flatly to the person who spoke: “The question was just a hypothetical. This is obviously not real.”
She glanced at Xia Shinan as she spoke, as if she was specifically talking to her.
“Exactly!” Fang Yue also helped wipe the table, “You guys asked me! If I had to choose one person in the room, I would definitely choose the upperclassman who helped me!”
“The upperclassman is kind and good-looking. If it were you, wouldn’t you choose her?” Fang Yue countered, and everyone suddenly felt that made a lot of sense.
“Alright, alright, next game.”
“Yes, next game!”
Tang Yin’s jacket was slightly wet with the drink, so she stood up to clean it and told everyone to continue playing.
Xia Shinan watched Tang Yin leave the room, her mind still preoccupied with what had just happened. But when she turned around, she found Fang Yue had smoothly sat down next to her.
“Upperclassman, are you okay?”
Xia Shinan didn’t understand, “I’m fine. Why?”
Fang Yue leaned close and whispered: “I was worried that you would be unhappy about the truth-or-dare question just now.”
Xia Shinan shook her head: “No, I’m not.”
Although she was surprised, she wouldn’t say she was unhappy. And Tang Yin had also said it was just a hypothetical.
“That’s good. I actually thought you two had something going on.” Fang Yue looked relieved, “It seems you’re just good friends.”
Xia Shinan didn’t say anything. She and Tang Yin were good friends, but the other person’s use of “just” made her feel a little uncomfortable.
“Do you… like… girls?” Xia Shinan thought about it and asked proactively.
“Yes.” Fang Yue admitted without hesitation, “Society is much more open now. Liking girls is not a big deal. What about you, upperclassman?”
“Me?” Xia Shinan was stumped.
She had never considered that question.
The door opened. Tang Yin returned from the restroom and immediately saw Xia Shinan and Fang Yue whispering to each other.
Xia Shinan also noticed Tang Yin. But after meeting her gaze, she immediately averted her eyes after just a moment.
Tang Yin: ?
What are those two gossiping about?
