- Chapter 31 - Confirmed
“What’s a pity?” Huo Yan suddenly appeared behind him.
“Brother!” Huo Xuan clutched his heart dramatically. “Can you stop scaring me like that!”
“Brother Huo Yan,” Jiang Xinyan greeted him. Huo Xuan took the chance to catch his breath, but didn’t forget to gossip with his brother. “I just saw Brother Mingze bring a junior over.” He leaned in and whispered, “Brother Mingze divorced his wife. Did you know?”
“I knew.”
“It’s a real mess, tsk tsk,” Huo Xuan shook his head. “How long has it been since Auntie Lu passed away? Brother Mingze kicked his wife out of the house already. That poor little wife, so pitiful!”
“If you have time to pity others, you’d be better off reading a few more books.” Huo Yan didn’t mention that he held an IOU for Lu Mingze’s divorce settlement fees. Since Lu Mingze had to stoop to borrowing money from him, his ex-wife must have walked away with a significant portion of the assets. She was hardly in a position where she needed Huo Xuan’s pity.
“You can’t put it that way, Brother,” Huo Xuan argued. “Look at how strong Brother Mingze’s luck with women is! Right after a divorce, he has a beautiful little junior to accompany him. Brother, when are you going to find me a sister-in-law? Of course, love is free these days—even our cousin has found a girlfriend. If you brought home a brother-in-law, I’d absolutely accept him too.”
Seeing his brother’s talk becoming more and more outrageous, Huo Yan narrowed his eyes. Huo Xuan caught the signal instantly and shut down his joking. “Brother, I was wrong.”
“Who did you say came with Mingze?”
“A junior! Also from C-University. Name’s Yun Shu.” Huo Xuan tried his luck. “Brother, do you know her?”
“I do.” Leaving behind those two words, Huo Yan walked away.
“I feel like I’m sleepwalking,” Huo Xuan said dazed to Jiang Xinyan. “Everything today feels so surreal. It’s magical!”
“That’s just because you’re too gossipy!” Jiang Xinyan ignored him, took her glass of red wine, and walked away in her high heels.
When Lu Mingze spotted Qin Shi, the joy at the corners of his mouth hadn’t even finished forming before he saw Ning Qi. His good mood instantly soured. “What are you doing here?”
“Why can’t I be here?” Ning Qi looked up and countered. “Is this the full-moon party for your child?”
“Oh! I forgot,” Ning Qi said unhurriedly. “Calculating the time, it hasn’t even been a month since we divorced. Even if you cheated and Miss Yun got pregnant, the baby wouldn’t be born yet!”
Ning Qi’s words clearly reminded Lu Mingze of that thick stack of photos. His mood plummeted, which was exactly what Ning Qi intended.
“Miss Ning,” Yun Shu interjected from the side. “I didn’t argue when you said those things about me last time, but how can you speak about Senior Lu like that?”
“Why can’t I?” Ning Qi replied. “It takes two to tango!”
Yun Shu’s first instinct was to defend him, which moved Lu Mingze slightly, but he still looked toward Qin Shi.
“Qin Shi, I—” Lu Mingze desperately wanted to explain, but he heard Qin Shi say:
“This must be CEO Lu’s girlfriend?”
Qin Shi’s words left Yun Shu bewildered. How could she have changed her face so completely? It was as if the woman who had been so aggressive toward her last time was a different person.
This time, Qin Shi’s attitude was relatively civil, but it set off alarm bells in Yun Shu’s heart. She hadn’t forgotten how Senior Lu’s expression had changed the last time Qin Shi was mentioned. Though it was only for a second, she was a woman who watched this man constantly; how could she not notice?
Moreover, Yun Shu had always felt that Senior Lu’s reasons for moving weren’t the real point. She had a gut feeling that they hadn’t moved because of Ning Qi, but because of Qin Shi!
“No,” Lu Mingze said quickly. “This is a junior from our school…”
He wanted to explain further, but seeing that Qin Shi didn’t seem to care at all, he remembered what Yun Shu had told him: Qin Shi seemed to know about him and Yun Shu, yet she had no reaction. Plus, she was now so close with Ning Qi.
Consequently, even though Ning Qi hadn’t opened her mouth, she received a glaring look from him. If Ning Qi knew what he was thinking, she would have said: You guessed right, but I wasn’t slandering you—I was telling the truth!
Hearing his denial, Ning Qi looked at Yun Shu with a half-smile. After all this, she’s not even the girlfriend yet? She had thought they were already at the stage of heading to the registry office.
She had overestimated their speed. It seemed Lu Mingze was still pining for Qin Shi. This was absolutely unacceptable!
“CEO Lu, you’re being a bit dishonest, aren’t you?” Ning Qi said lazily. “I thought you divorced me so quickly so you could marry Miss Yun. I already vacated the position for her, but I didn’t expect the two of you to…”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk,” Ning Qi shook her head repeatedly until Yun Shu looked like she was about to faint.
Lu Mingze naturally noticed. “Yun Shu, I—”
“It’s okay,” Yun Shu gave Lu Mingze a brave smile, then mustered her spirit to say to Ning Qi: “Miss Ning, I think this is a matter between Senior Lu and me. Even if you are his ex-wife, you have no right to pry into this, do you?”
She emphasized the words “ex-wife,” as if specifically marking her territory. Only she knew that everything Ning Qi had just said was a direct hit.
Hearing Yun Shu’s words, Lu Mingze felt grounded. He replied, “Yes, this is between the two of us.”
“Oh!” Ning Qi shrugged noncommittally. “Then as long as you’re happy!”
How could they be happy? Yun Shu felt stifled but didn’t show it. Meanwhile, Lu Mingze realized he still hadn’t explained things to Qin Shi.
At that moment, the Jiang family banquet officially began. The master of the Jiang house and Miss Huo took the stage to speak. Qin Shi and Ning Qi’s attention naturally shifted away. Lu Mingze felt a bitter smile in his heart—Qin Shi really doesn’t care, does she?
“Senior Lu,” Yun Shu suppressed the questions in her heart and spoke in a small, soft voice. “My hand hurts a little.”
Lu Mingze looked down and realized he was clutching Yun Shu’s hand tightly. He had used so much force that her hand was red, yet she had only just told him.
“I’m sorry, Yun Shu,” Lu Mingze felt a pang of guilt. “I…”
“I know Mingze didn’t do it on purpose,” Yun Shu said with a beam as she looked up. “It doesn’t really hurt. It’s just…” She added playfully, “I just wanted Mingze to feel a little more sorry for me.”
“I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.” Lu Mingze felt even more tender toward the woman in front of him. He felt a sense of debt toward Yun Shu, largely because he was looking for a substitute.
Seeing his reaction, Yun Shu cautiously tested the waters: “Senior, do you like Miss Qin?”
“No,” Lu Mingze lied. In fact, the moment he had married Ning Qi, his mother had told him bluntly: “You and Miss Qin are impossible.”
The Qin family would never marry their only daughter into the Lu family, especially since he was now a divorcé. Regardless of whether Qin Shi agreed, the Qin family would be the first to say no.
Perhaps he should try to give up. He realized that whenever Qin Shi wasn’t in front of him, the only person he thought of was Yun Shu. Lu Mingze fell into deep thought…
A moment later, he looked up and asked, “Yun Shu, would you… be willing to be my girlfriend?”
“I am willing!” Yun Shu almost cried with joy.
