- After the Breakup, My Ex-Boyfriend’s "White Moonlight" Became Obsessed With Me
- Chapter 6 - Let Us Break Up
The sound of a click echoed as the door locked. On the sofa, He Ran’s fingers twitched, and he opened his eyes. He sat up, feeling somewhat dazed, only then realizing he had unknowingly fallen asleep. He instinctively lifted his wrist to check the time.
It was 11:46 PM.
Just then, a heavy thud sounded from the foyer as the front door closed. He Ran looked over and saw Ji Yang. At that moment, Ji Yang was leaning over to change his shoes. He then turned around and looked at He Ran with a calm expression.
He looked slightly disheveled. A few strands of his neatly combed hair had fallen loose, and his pale face showed clear signs of fatigue. He Ran stood up to return his gaze. His eyes flickered with emotion as he wanted to say something, but he could not bring himself to speak. After a long silence, he finally asked, “Have you eaten dinner?”
Ji Yang gave a short “Mhm” in response and casually placed his briefcase on the shoe cabinet.
Though they had been intimate only the night before, the two now stood facing each other in a silence so heavy it felt as if they were strangers. Finally, He Ran broke the silence. “Have you been with Yin Zheng all day?”
Ji Yang hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Yes.”
“Is that so?” He Ran sat back down on the sofa, forcing himself to remain composed. “I want an explanation.”
Ji Yang wiped his face and said wearily, “There is nothing to explain.”
He Ran was stunned for a moment. He looked at him with disbelief, as if he were meeting him for the first time. “Nothing to explain?”
He suddenly let out a cold sneer, which gradually turned into a laugh as he slowly stood up. His behavior was clearly off. Alarm bells rang in Ji Yang’s mind, and he instinctively stepped back, but with the wall right behind him, there was nowhere to go.
He Ran approached him step by step, his voice chillingly cold. “You lied to me, saying you were going on a business trip, when you were actually going to a private meeting with your old flame. You knew I was at home waiting for you, yet you stayed out this late with another man. Now, you tell me there is nothing to explain?”
He gripped Ji Yang’s chin and said through gritted teeth, “Ji Yang, do you think it is fun to play with me?”
“Let go!” Ji Yang winced in pain and instinctively struggled.
“Answer me!” He Ran roared, his eyes colder than they had ever been.
Ji Yang was startled and stared at him blankly. In his memory, this was the first time He Ran had ever spoken to him in such a tone. For a moment, he found it difficult to accept. His heart felt bitter as he lowered his head to avoid He Ran’s gaze. With a voice tinged with guilt, he said, “He Ran, let us break up.”
He Ran froze, and his grip slowly loosened. “What did you say?”
Ji Yang sniffled and took a deep breath, repeating, “Let us break up.”
When he heard nothing for a long time, Ji Yang looked up in confusion, only to be met by the man’s icy stare. “He Ran? You?”
“Heh.” He Ran let go of him, his voice as cold as ice and snow. “Yin Zheng just returned, and you already want to break up with me? What is it? Are you so impatient to get back together with your old flame? You cannot even be bothered to pretend anymore?”
Ji Yang’s lips trembled. “He Ran! Do you have to speak to me like that?”
“Then how do you want me to act?” He Ran shouted. He swept the items off the shelf, sending bottles and jars crashing to the floor in a shattered mess.
Ji Yang’s eyes widened, and he froze in place.
“Ask yourself over all these years! Have I ever done anything to wrong you? When have I not fulfilled your every request?” He Ran continued. “But what about you? Have you ever done anything for me? Have you ever even given me a kind look? Ji Yang, I am a human being! I have a heart, too! It damn well hurts!”
“I did not understand before; I thought I was the one doing something wrong. But I get it now. I am just your damn rebound!”
With tears in his eyes, Ji Yang shook his head and repeatedly said, “No, it is not like that.”
But He Ran asked, “Ji Yang, have you noticed your own clothes?”
Ji Yang froze, and his face turned deathly pale in an instant.
He Ran waved his hand wearily and turned to leave. “I do not want to know what you and Yin Zheng did today. I am tired, Ji Yang. You want to break up? Then let us break up. I will grant your wish.”
“It is very late. Go and rest. I will sleep in the guest room tonight.”
With the bang of the door closing, Ji Yang was left alone in the vast living room. He slumped powerlessly amidst the mess on the floor, curling his legs up into a ball. After a long while, low sobs began to echo through the room.
The next morning, He Ran sat up in bed, rubbing his aching forehead. He had not slept at all the previous night. His mind felt as though it were filled with paste, a tangled mess he could not straighten out. He had only managed to doze off for a moment before his biological clock woke him up.
He threw off the covers, got out of bed, and opened the door. The house was empty; Ji Yang was already gone. He Ran felt a sense of loss, unsure of what to do. In truth, he knew exactly when Ji Yang was leaving. He had lain in bed, ears strained, listening to the sound of footsteps pacing back and forth.
“He must be packing his things,” He Ran had thought.
It was not until he heard the door open that he snapped out of it. He scrambled out of bed and rushed out the door, but he was a step too late. Ji Yang was gone.
Was it really over? Were they truly broken up? For a moment, he wanted to chase after him regardless of the consequences, to hold him back and say, “Let us not break up, okay?”
His hand was already on the doorknob, but in the end, he did not push the door open. He turned back to his room in a daze. He could not get over the hurdle in his heart, nor could he forgive the betrayal of his lover. If he had not seen that white stain on the hem of Ji Yang’s clothes, he might have convinced himself that the two of them spending the day together was just a meeting between friends.
Unfortunately, it seemed even heaven did not want them to stay together. There are certain lines that simply cannot be crossed.
He had been with Ji Yang for five years and had loved him for seven. Seven years! How many seven-year periods does one get in life? This was the first time he had loved someone so wholeheartedly and without reservation, only for it to end in such a bleak manner. It was truly pathetic and miserable.
“President He? President He?”
“Mhm?” He Ran snapped back to reality, realizing he was in a meeting. He collected his thoughts and cleared his throat. “Let us proceed as Director Zhang suggested. Is there anything else?”
Project Manager Zhao Zongquan said, “President He, the negotiations between the company and RE were originally going smoothly. The contract signing was scheduled for this afternoon at our office. However, for some reason, they suddenly changed their mind today. They said they want to meet with you personally before deciding whether to continue the partnership.”
“Meet me?”
RE was a well-known enterprise in the United States that had only risen to prominence domestically in the last two years. Its strength was not to be underestimated. This was the first collaboration between the two companies, and the previous discussions had been very pleasant. Why the sudden demand to see him?
“Who is the person in charge of their company again?”
Zhao Zongquan replied, “I am not sure of the full name, but the surname is Yin.”
“Surnamed Yin? I thought their head of China operations was surnamed Chen?”
Zhao Zongquan explained, “The previous one was Mr. Chen. This one just took office. He is reportedly the eldest son of the RE family and has just returned from abroad.”
Surnamed Yin, just back from abroad, and specifically asking to see him? It was not that He Ran was being overly sensitive, but all these conditions combined made him instinctively think of one person.
Fine! He had only just broken up, and the other party was already impatiently seeking him out. What was this? A show of force?
He Ran gave a cold laugh. “Heh.”
The people below him instantly became as quiet as mice. Zhao Zongquan’s expression changed as he frantically replayed his words, wondering which part had offended President He so much. For a moment, no one dared to breathe, carefully watching his expression.
“Fine!” He Ran tossed his expensive fountain pen onto the table and leaned back. A cold smirk played on his handsome face. “Then let us meet. Go and arrange a time. I will be right here waiting for him!”
