- Chapter 7 - Rivals Meet with Eyes Full of Spite
He Ran strode into his office with long, aggressive steps. He ripped off his tie and threw it onto the sofa with force, yet his frustration remained unvented. He cursed loudly.
“Fuck!”
He slammed his weight into the sofa and tugged at his collar, his face a mask of irritation.
Secretary Li pushed the door open cautiously and said in a soft voice, “Manager Zhao just called. He said the meeting is scheduled for 3:00 PM and asked you to prepare yourself.”
Prepare? What did he have to prepare for? Did they expect him to groom himself and wait to receive royalty? What did Zhao Zongquan mean by this? Did he want to lose his job?
“Achoo!”
On the other side of the building, Zhao Zongquan, who was diligently working, let out a massive sneeze. He rubbed his nose and muttered, “Who is talking behind my back?” After that, he went back to his tasks.
In truth, Zhao Zongquan had no ill intentions. He had simply seen He Ran’s explosive temper during the meeting and assumed his boss was dissatisfied with the requirements proposed by President Yin. He was merely offering a subtle reminder to prioritize the big picture.
His logic was sound, and He Ran truly did dislike President Yin. However, because He Ran was currently in a fit of rage, everything he heard sounded like sarcasm. Consequently, when Zhao Zongquan came in to report, he was met with frequent cold glares from his boss. It left him trembling with fear as he desperately tried to recall how else he might have offended the big boss.
Although He Ran was the head of the company, his workload was not actually that heavy. This was primarily because he was willing to delegate authority. If he were busy every second of every day, what would be the point of hiring executives with multi-million dollar salaries?
When a person is idle, their mind tends to wander. Inevitably, He Ran began thinking about Ji Yang and the upcoming meeting with Yin Zheng.
Why did Yin Zheng want to see him? Was he simply coming to flaunt? That would be far too shallow. In his memory, Yin Zheng did not seem like such a boring person.
During university, He Ran and Yin Zheng did not interact much. Yin Zheng, like Ji Yang, was two years his senior. Their few encounters were always related to Ji Yang. Thinking back, their relationship had always been a bit strange. At times, Ji Yang seemed to fear Yin Zheng; at other times, he admired him greatly, his every word filled with adoration.
He Ran remembered being very jealous back then. He had pressed Ji Yang about the nature of their relationship. However, Ji Yang told him clearly that they were not lovers, his tone suggesting he was repulsed by the very question. That was the only reason He Ran felt comfortable enough to pursue him.
If He Ran had known back then that they liked each other, he might not have pursued Ji Yang so fervently.
He picked up his phone. There were only a few messages from Xue Yuanzhou and a health video shared by Chu Shenxing. He Ran sent a middle finger emoji back to Chu Shenxing and then opened his chat with Xue Yuanzhou.
Xue Yuanzhou: Are you there? Xue Yuanzhou: I called you yesterday but you did not pick up. Are you okay? Xue Yuanzhou: If you are in a bad mood, find me. I will take you to a bar. [Grinning face] Xue Yuanzhou: Reply when you see this. He Ran: I am fine. Xue Yuanzhou (replied instantly): Are you at the company? He Ran: Yes. Xue Yuanzhou: How is it going? He Ran: How is what going? Xue Yuanzhou: Do not play dumb. How are things with that guy, Ji? He Ran: We broke up!
The other side went silent for a while. He Ran typed: “What? You do not believe me?” Xue Yuanzhou: You really broke up? He Ran: Why would I lie to you? Xue Yuanzhou: Good! I told you long ago that you two were not a good match. A breakup was inevitable. He Ran (puzzled): Did you say that? Xue Yuanzhou: Of course! Look, your name is Ran (Burning) and his is Yang (Water). You are fire and he is water. Fire and water are incompatible! He Ran: Fine. He Ran: Come out for drinks tonight. The usual place! Xue Yuanzhou: You got it! He Ran: Call Shenxing too. Xue Yuanzhou: Oh.
He Ran checked the time. It was already 11:00 AM. He usually ate lunch at the company, but since he found the cafeteria too noisy, he always had Secretary Li bring it up to him. However, he had no appetite today. Having not slept at all last night, his head was throbbing painfully.
He dialed the internal line. Secretary Li’s voice answered quickly: “Hello, President He! This is Li Lan.”
“Do not bother bringing me lunch today. Also, do not come up to see me unless it is something urgent.”
“Understood, President He!”
This was what He Ran liked most about Li Lan: she was capable and did not talk too much. He hung up the phone, stood up, and headed toward his lounge.
He Ran’s nap was quite comfortable. He lay buried in the soft bedding, unwilling to get up. It was not until someone knocked on the door that he reluctantly rose to wash up.
Li Lan was already waiting outside. When she saw him, she said, “President He, the people from RE are on their way. They should arrive in about thirty minutes. Where would you like to receive them?”
“In my office,” He Ran replied.
“Understood, President He. I will make the arrangements.”
He Ran had already started walking out of the lounge, but he paused, turned back, and went to the full-length mirror to inspect himself. He was wearing a custom-made navy blue suit, dark brown leather shoes, and a dark green jacquard tie. His hair was styled in the popular 70/30 split.
Regarding his looks, He Ran had always been confident, but the situation with Ji Yang had suddenly shaken that confidence. He could not help but ask Li Lan, who was nearby, “What do you think of my appearance?”
Li Lan’s professional smile stiffened for a second, but she spoke truthfully. “President He, you are the most outstanding person I have ever seen in terms of looks, family background, and physique.”
“Is that so?”
“I swear it!”
He carefully straightened his clothes, ensuring there was not a single wrinkle before he finally stepped out of the lounge.
Behind him, Li Lan’s gaze was peculiar. She felt something was not quite right. After leaving the office, it suddenly clicked. This was exactly how she acted when she was going to see her boyfriend, making herself look as flashy and attractive as possible.
Could they have all guessed wrong? Was President He not dissatisfied with President Yin, but rather…
Hiss.
Li Lan took a sharp breath. Convinced she had discovered the truth, her gossiping spirit burned brightly. She began to look forward to President Yin’s arrival. She had heard that the eldest son of the RE family had been brilliant since childhood and grew up to be an elegant, talented, and handsome man.
She wondered who would come out on top when compared to her own boss.
If He Ran knew what was going through her head, he would have retracted his praise from three hours ago and told her to get out immediately.
