- After the Breakup, My Ex-Boyfriend’s "White Moonlight" Became Obsessed With Me
- Chapter 3 - Man, You Have Been Hiding This Quite Deeply
Inside the car, Xue Yuanzhou peeked cautiously at the person sitting next to him. “Ran-ge? Are you still angry?”
He Ran had his arms crossed and was leaning back against the seat with his eyes closed, clearly not wanting to deal with him.
“Stop being mad, okay? I know I was wrong. How about I treat you to drinks tonight?”
“Or you could just hit me once to let off some steam?”
Seeing that he still would not talk, Xue Yuanzhou did not know how to coax him. With a crestfallen face, he said, “He Ran-ge, I really know I was wrong. Please talk to me, okay?”
He Ran finally opened his eyes and said with disgust, “I am not trying to nag, but you are in your twenties. You still throw tantrums and act like a brat at the drop of a hat. Do you really think you are still a three-year-old?”
Seeing that He Ran was willing to speak to him, Xue Yuanzhou quickly said, “I promise I will not act like that again.”
“I will believe it when I see it.”
“He Ran-ge!”
“Fine, fine, stop right there!”
“Hehe!”
Feeling helpless, He Ran changed the subject. “Where are we going?”
“Lin Feng Yuan.”
Lin Feng Yuan was located in the city center. It was a high-end Chinese restaurant where the Suzhou cuisine was considered a masterpiece, and it was a favorite spot for He Ran and his friends.
An arrogant red McLaren came to a steady stop at the entrance.
Xue Yuanzhou tossed the keys to the valet, and he and He Ran were led inside by a hostess.
The lobby manager, having a sharp eye for regular guests, stepped forward with a decent and composed smile. “Second Young Master He and Young Master Xue, it has been a long time. Please come inside. Shall we seat you at your usual spot today?”
He Ran did not speak, so Xue Yuanzhou replied, “We will not take a private room today. Arrange a quieter spot for us.”
“Certainly, please follow me.”
It was peak dinner time, and the main hall was mostly full. Although the average spending here was not low, Jinghai City never lacked wealthy people. They did not care about a little money; most came specifically for the exquisite taste.
The two were led by the manager to a quiet spot to sit. This location was close to the entrance. People coming in from the outside would not necessarily see them, but they could see anyone entering immediately.
Since it was still early for the scheduled appointment, He Ran asked, “Which family’s young lady is it this time?”
Xue Yuanzhou was idly fiddling with the white napkin in front of him, unfolding the square cloth that had been folded into a crane and refolding it again. Hearing the question, he said, “The youngest daughter of the Su family. She is three years older than me.”
“A woman three years older is like carrying a gold brick. Besides, the Su family’s youngest daughter is famously beautiful and has a good personality. If you ask me, you should try dating her first. Constantly using me as a shield is not a permanent solution,” He Ran advised him.
“Wait, wait, wait!” Xue Yuanzhou unhappily threw down the napkin in his hand. “I asked you here to help me, not to act as a lobbyist for my mother! Besides,” he said half-seriously, “besides, I already have someone I like.”
“Who? How come I did not know?” He Ran suddenly perked up.
“There is a lot you do not know,” Xue Yuanzhou muttered.
He Ran propped his arms on the table and leaned forward with a face full of gossip. “Who is it exactly? Do I know them?”
“I suppose you do.”
This made him even more curious. “Someone I know? Ming Yu? Yu Yan? Or Xiao Ge?”
“Stop, stop!” Xue Yuanzhou was speechless. “Where are you even getting these names? Stop guessing blindly; you will not get it anyway.”
He Ran sighed. “If you do not want to say, then fine. But you should tell your mother about this. That way, she will not keep rushing to arrange blind dates for you.”
Xue Yuanzhou lowered his head and said with a bitter smile, “She knows.”
“She knows and still makes you go on blind dates?” He Ran was surprised, then reached a realization. “Could it be that the girl’s family background is not good? That should not be it. Your mother is quite open-minded.”
Seeing him shake his head, He Ran suddenly thought of something and exclaimed, “Don’t tell me you—”
Xue Yuanzhou jolted, instinctively clutching the napkin in his hand, and stammered, “I, I what!”
He Ran frowned, thinking about how Xue Yuanzhou made him act as a shield for every blind date. Looking back, it was indeed strange. Remembering Chu Shenxing’s ambiguous comment from this morning, he felt he had guessed the truth. His jaw nearly dropped in shock.
Xue Yuanzhou was so nervous he forgot to breathe. He stared with his puppy-like eyes, looking at He Ran with a mix of panic and anticipation.
He Ran took a deep breath and asked cautiously, “Could it be that you are like me and you like men?”
“I… cough!”
Xue Yuanzhou’s heart was thrown high and then suddenly dropped. He was instantly choked by his own saliva and began to cough violently. He could not help but curse, “Cough! You… He Ran, you are a damn idiot! A total moron! Cough, cough, cough!”
“Damn!” He Ran quickly stood up to pat his back, not minding the insults. “Why are you so agitated? Did I actually guess correctly? No way! You have been hiding this deep, haven’t you?”
“Just shut up!” Xue Yuanzhou’s face was flushed red from coughing, and he was too annoyed to deal with him.
He Ran quickly handed him a glass of water. “Drink some water to smooth it out.”
Xue Yuanzhou did not make things hard for himself; he took it and drank in small sips. Once he looked better, He Ran sat back down and continued the previous topic. “Seriously, do you really like men?”
Xue Yuanzhou put down the teacup and said unhappily, “What? I am not allowed to like men?”
“It is not that, man. How come I have never heard you mention it? Did you not like girls before?”
Xue Yuanzhou asked, “When exactly do you mean by ‘before’?”
He Ran thought for a moment. “In elementary school, did you not chase that one girl in class? I forgot her name, but she was definitely a girl.”
Xue Yuanzhou replied, “Back then, I also said I wanted to marry you when I grew up.”
“Is that even the same thing?”
“How is it different?” Xue Yuanzhou said. “How old was I then? I did not know anything.”
He Ran’s expression turned serious. “Are you being serious?”
Xue Yuanzhou did not speak; his head dropped again.
He Ran sighed, finally understanding why his mother was so anxious. Xue Yuanzhou was different from him. He Ran had an older brother and a younger brother, so no matter how much he messed around, it did not matter; his family did not really restrict him. But Xue Yuanzhou was an only child. Forget brothers; he did not even have sisters.
No wonder his mother was frantically trying to get him married at only twenty-five. With their family background, they could not always do as they pleased. Even if you were gay, you usually had to produce an heir first; otherwise, the massive family fortune would be handed over to outsiders.
At this point, He Ran did not know what to say. Words of comfort felt too hollow when they reached his lips. But looking at the person opposite him with a drooping head, so dejected that even his white hair seemed to lose its luster, he could not bear it.
Just as he was about to speak, his peripheral vision caught a familiar figure, and he froze.
After a long silence, Xue Yuanzhou looked up in confusion, only to see He Ran staring blankly at a certain spot. Following his gaze, once he saw who it was, he said in surprise, “He—”
Before he could finish his sentence, He Ran quickly covered his mouth.
Their table was to the left of the main entrance, separated by a two-meter-high antique display shelf filled with curios, porcelain, and exquisite potted plants. Both of them were sitting sideways to the door so they could spot Miss Su the moment she arrived.
He had not expected that before Miss Su appeared, he would see an unexpected person, someone who should not have been there at all.
