“Huff, huff.”
He Ran flipped over to lie flat on the bed, his breathing heavy and ragged.
He closed his eyes for a moment to recover before opening them again. The man possessed an exceptionally handsome face, featuring a high bridge to his nose, deep-set eyes, and vivid features. His phoenix-shaped eyes, in particular, had deep double-eyelid folds that seemed capable of ensnaring one’s very soul.
He turned his head to look at the person lying prone beside him, leaning in to press a kiss against his cheek.
The other person on the bed was naked, his hair damp with sweat and clinging messily to his face. Despite the disarray, one could still see that the man’s features were clean and elegant, carrying a natural scholarly air.
He Ran reached out to brush away the strands of hair stuck to the man’s face and kissed his forehead. Ji Yang remained silent, seemingly having not yet processed his surroundings.
He Ran chuckled and pulled him into his arms.
After a moment, Ji Yang regained his senses and reached out to push him away. “It’s hot.”
He Ran did not mind. He took the opportunity to let go. “I will carry you to the shower.”
“No need,” Ji Yang replied, his voice somewhat cold.
He Ran gave an affirmative sound and did not insist. He watched, accustomed to the routine, as Ji Yang walked with a slight limp into the bathroom.
He sat up, leaning against the headboard, and reached for the cigarette pack on the nightstand. With a practiced motion, he shook one out and held it between his lips.
The lighter flared softly. He Ran tilted his head slightly.
Pale blue smoke drifted through the air, blurring his features and making his dark pupils appear even deeper.
He and Ji Yang had met during their freshman year of college. It was a cliché story. He fell in love with Ji Yang at first sight and immediately began pursuing him.
But Ji Yang rejected him. Whether it was driven by wounded pride or genuine affection, He Ran continued the pursuit for two years, even when his friends had dismissed it as a joke.
Yet, Ji Yang did not love him. Upon realizing it was completely hopeless, He Ran planned to give up. He had been pampered since childhood. Being humble and subservient for two years was already his limit.
But right then, Ji Yang unexpectedly agreed to be with him.
He could not quite remember how he felt at that moment. He only remembered that he had invited his best friends to a KTV and drank until dawn.
Although Ji Yang remained as cold as ever after they got together, leaving He Ran to occasionally wonder if the man actually liked him at all, those doubts usually vanished once they were in bed.
Under the covers, Ji Yang was compliant and would respond to him with great passion.
However, one thing frustrated He Ran. Ji Yang’s compliance existed only in bed. The moment they stepped out of the sheets, he reverted to that icy, distant persona. It often made He Ran joke to himself that he was nothing more than a human vibrator.
Of course, that was just self-deprecation. He had always been firm in his belief in Ji Yang’s feelings for him.
But now, he was starting to feel uncertain.
The sound of the shower stopped. He Ran snapped back to reality and instinctively stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray.
The door opened, and Ji Yang walked out while drying his hair. Sensing the smell of smoke in the room, his brows furrowed imperceptibly.
He Ran opened the window, offering a bright smile. “It will clear out in a bit.”
Ji Yang said, “I am going on a business trip tomorrow. You go to sleep first. I need to pack.”
He Ran was startled. “Why did you not tell me?”
“It is not a big deal,” Ji Yang said dismissively.
He Ran’s eyes darkened, and he let out a sigh. “Go rest. I will pack for you.”
“No need. The clothes are already packed. Only my laptop and a few documents are left. I will handle it in a moment. You go to sleep.”
The door closed behind him.
He Ran froze mid-motion as he was about to get up. After a few seconds, he slowly leaned back, his expression turning grim.
It was not that he minded the small things. It was that he had sensed something.
Starting last month, he had a nagging feeling that Ji Yang was hiding something from him. It was not that He Ran was being paranoid. It was more that Ji Yang did not seem to care about hiding it at all. Whether it was his hot-and-cold attitude or his increasingly distant tone, everything was a silent omen.
He did not know what he had done wrong, so he simply tried harder to be good to him.
But now, it seemed that was useless.
The Next Day
When He Ran woke up, Ji Yang was already gone.
He ran a hand through his hair, got up, and went to the bathroom to wash up.
The bathroom mirror reflected a man’s fit physique. The hickeys on his neck were particularly prominent against his pale skin, and there were several clear scratch marks on his shoulders and lower back. Combined with the faint dark circles under his eyes and his messy short hair, he exuded a peculiar kind of sexiness.
He Ran spat out the toothpaste foam, rinsed his mouth, and left the bathroom.
He pulled his clothes for the day from the wardrobe and casually styled his hair. Moments later, he had returned to the image of a well-dressed, polished member of the elite.
The driver was already waiting downstairs. He Ran headed down and climbed straight into the car.
He Ran had studied Finance and Computer Science in college. Upon graduation, he entered the family business, and in recent years, he had slowly begun taking over the majority of the company operations.
Arriving at the Chenyang Group, he took the express elevator to the 28th floor, walked into his private office, and began another busy day.
