Chapter 60: “I can’t control my reaction… I’m sorry…”
They watched an art film together. The movie was boring, but the feeling of being nestled in bed together was warm and rather nice.
A supporting character in the movie, halfway through the story, discovered a strong physical desire for a male friend. Watching this, Shen Qingyu became curious about how Cheng Che discovered his own sexual orientation.
Cheng Che was very honest: “Actually, I never liked anyone, male or female, growing up. So I didn’t know what type of person I liked, until the day I saw you in the dorm… You might not believe it, but I fell for you at first sight.”
“Love at first sight?”
“Yes. I just felt like ever since you appeared in the dorm, even the air smelled sweet. You were right in front of me, but I felt like I couldn’t reach you.” Cheng Che chuckled foolishly. “Maybe back then I thought you were like a fairy.”
Shen Qingyu was amused by his comparison. “Then, when you found out you liked boys, weren’t you uneasy?”
“No.”
“Your psychological strength is really impressive then,” Shen Qingyu looked at him admiringly. When he discovered he liked boys in high school, he was confused for a while, wondering if something was wrong with him. Fortunately, a senior noticed his distress and guided and consoled him, which helped Shen Qingyu escape his confusion.
“In my eyes, liking boys is no different from liking girls. There’s no right or wrong to it.” Cheng Che ruffled his head, then lowered his head and pecked him on the lips.
Shen Qingyu loved being treated with such tenderness and leaned in to kiss him back. Like a kitten kissing its owner, the kiss made Cheng Che’s lips tingle. Just as he was about to press the back of Shen Qingyu’s neck for a deeper kiss, they heard his mother’s voice from outside the door.
“Cheng Che, Xiao Yu, I’m coming in?”
Shen Qingyu quickly pulled away from his embrace, sat properly on the bed, and then motioned with his chin for Cheng Che to reply quickly.
“Come in, Mom.”
Cheng Che’s mother pushed the door open, a warm smile on her face: “We’re out of vegetables and soy sauce at home. Go buy some. Your dad isn’t home today, so I’m cooking for you.”
Cheng Che answered, “What kind of vegetables?”
“Just buy what looks good. Get what you and Xiao Yu like.”
Shen Qingyu said, “I’ll go too. I can help carry things.”
When he said this, Cheng Che raised an eyebrow at him. The look seemed to say: Are you sure you can help me carry things?
Shen Qingyu, of course, knew that if he went grocery shopping with Cheng Che, he wouldn’t get to carry anything, but he looked back at him without batting an eye, his expression very sincere.
Cheng Che’s mother, however, said, “No need, let him go by himself. He’s tall enough to carry them. Xiao Yu, stay here and talk with me.”
Shen Qingyu suddenly felt nervous. He grabbed the corner of his clothes, feeling helpless. Of course, he couldn’t refuse, and he didn’t mind chatting with Cheng Che’s mother. However, his identity was currently out of the ordinary—he wasn’t just Cheng Che’s roommate, but his boyfriend. He was afraid of slipping up and being discovered, and even more afraid of saying the wrong thing and reducing Cheng Che’s mother’s goodwill toward him.
Cheng Che’s first reaction was to seek Shen Qingyu’s opinion. This instinctive action gave Shen Qingyu a lot of courage.
“Okay, I’ll keep Auntie company then,” Shen Qingyu agreed obediently.
The door closed. Cheng Che’s mother pulled Shen Qingyu to the sofa to talk. She took out Cheng Che’s childhood photos and introduced them to him one by one.
Since they were talking because of Cheng Che, he naturally became the most suitable topic between them.
The last photo in the first album was a picture of Cheng Che and his mother standing in the school auditorium. Cheng Che in the photo was wearing a high school uniform, his skin a bit darker than now, his hair shorter, and his eyes bright and full of energy. He looked quite spirited.
“This photo was taken during his coming-of-age ceremony in his senior year of high school. The teacher asked the kids to write letters to their parents. Guess what he wrote to me and his dad?” Cheng Che’s mother gently ran her hand over the photo. “He only wrote one sentence: ‘Mom and Dad, I won’t disappoint you.'”
“Actually, when he first wanted to pursue the sports entrance exam, none of the relatives supported him. After all, his academic performance had been very good all these years, always the best among his peers. The relatives all felt the label of ‘sports student’ didn’t sound good, but his dad and I fully supported him doing what he wanted. So he held his breath, trained hard, studied hard, and finally got into Wen University.”
“The day the results came out, he said he hadn’t disappointed us. His dad and I really wanted to tell him that as long as he abides by the law, we would support him in whatever he does and would always be proud of him.”
Shen Qingyu once again felt the greatness of maternal and paternal love in another person’s family.
When they turned to the second album, Cheng Che’s mother sighed and said, “There aren’t many photos of him in this one. Can’t be helped, the child grew up. He doesn’t like taking pictures anymore, and he doesn’t like opening up to his family.”
Shen Qingyu consoled her: “Maybe it’s not that he doesn’t like opening up to you. A thousand words can’t compare to actually doing something. I think Cheng Che doesn’t want to use shallow language to express his love for you.”
“You’re right,” Cheng Che’s mother put her arm around Shen Qingyu’s shoulder. “That’s why I’m talking to you. Xiao Yu is so good.”
Shen Qingyu smiled reservedly. In Cheng Che’s mother’s kind eyes, Shen Qingyu suddenly felt an urge to reveal his own inner feelings. So he actually did. He hadn’t even told his aunt these things. The closer someone was, the harder it was to articulate.
Of course, after he finished sharing his experience, the highly empathetic Cheng Che’s mother shed tears. She hugged Shen Qingyu and said, “Xiao Yu, Auntie is so happy you were willing to tell me this… You’re a good boy. If you’re willing, you can treat me as your mother. I like you very much.”
Shen Qingyu also carefully hugged her back. A warm current surged through his heart. The moment he hugged Cheng Che’s mother, he felt like he was truly embracing his own mother. “Thank you, Auntie…”
“Silly child, don’t be so polite with me.” Cheng Che’s mother wiped her tears and continued showing him photos. When she saw one particular photo, a hint of melancholy surfaced on her face. “This was taken when our whole family went on a trip to relax after he got injured.”
Shen Qingyu’s heart tightened. He remembered Cheng Che had mentioned that he hadn’t been able to join the provincial team training because of an injury.
“He wasn’t in a good mood during that time, but he still smiled every day, just so his dad and I wouldn’t worry.”
“So now I don’t have many demands for him. I just hope he stays healthy and happy, and when the time is right, he finds a girl he likes, gets married, has children, and lives a happy life. That’s enough.”
At these words, Shen Qingyu’s body instantly stiffened. Cheng Che’s mother’s sentence repeated in his mind, making him unable to hear anything she said afterwards.
Before long, Cheng Che returned, holding a strawberry sundae. He saw the photo albums in their hands and said helplessly, “Mom, you took out my embarrassing history again.”
Cheng Che’s mother playfully glared at him. “How is this embarrassing history?”
“Alright, alright, it’s not embarrassing history.”
Shen Qingyu struggled to look up and meet Cheng Che’s eyes. Cheng Che vaguely saw a shimmer of tears in his eyes and frowned, asking, “What were you two talking about? Why do you both look like you’re about to cry?”
“Nothing much. It’s a secret between me and Xiao Yu.” Cheng Che’s mother took the grocery bag from Cheng Che’s hand. “Alright, you two go play. I’ll cook and let you try my skills.”
…
Back in Cheng Che’s room, he handed the sundae to Shen Qingyu: “I bought this for you. Eat it quickly before it melts.”
Shen Qingyu tasted the ice cream. The creamy sweetness spread in his mouth, but although it should have tasted sweet, he felt bitterness in his heart. Cheng Che’s mother’s words made him realize a problem: no matter how good or close their relationship was, as a mother, she definitely hoped her child would follow a traditional path.
So was what he and Cheng Che were doing truly right?
Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but wonder if agreeing to Cheng Che’s confession hadn’t been the right choice after all.
He ate distractedly, a ring of white cream around his mouth. Cheng Che only glanced at it, and his heart began to itch.
“Xiao Yu.” His voice was low, suppressing something.
“What is it?” Shen Qingyu scooped a spoonful, revealing a bit of his pink tongue when he opened his mouth.
“I want some too.”
Shen Qingyu was about to offer him the sundae, but he saw the dark emotion in Cheng Che’s eyes. His heart skipped a beat, and he hesitated: “Should I feed you?”
“Yes,” he answered quickly.
Shen Qingyu leaned to the side and fed him a bite. As he tried to move back to his original position, Cheng Che gripped his waist. He gasped, finding himself straddling Cheng Che’s lower abdomen, stunned for a moment.
The spoon hadn’t been extended far when a few drops of melted ice cream fell onto Shen Qingyu’s hand. He instinctively licked the back of his hand, completely unaware that this action was the ultimate temptation in the eyes of the person beneath him.
Stared at by the heated gaze, it was hard for Shen Qingyu not to notice. He leaned back, but accidentally sat on something hard. It only took him two seconds to realize what it was.
Shen Qingyu was conflicted, yet also felt like giving in. He used the tip of one finger to trace a line across Cheng Che’s lower abdomen. When his cold fingertip touched the warm, taut abs, Cheng Che’s body instantly tensed up.
Shen Qingyu actually knew that Cheng Che was infatuated with him, body and soul, and thoroughly enjoyed this feeling. He teased: “What is the meaning of this?”
Cheng Che’s voice was strained: “I can’t control my reaction… I’m sorry…” Under Shen Qingyu’s pure gaze, he actually felt a sense of blasphemy.
His arm moved. Shen Qingyu quickly realized he was trying to sit up and forcefully pressed him down. “What are you trying to do?”
Cheng Che’s mother’s words had left a mark on his heart, but Cheng Che’s burning gaze ignited Shen Qingyu’s rebellious side.
Shen Qingyu was usually gentle, but in this situation, he showed a forceful side. It was hard for Cheng Che not to be attracted to this side of Shen Qingyu, and an unusual emotion sprouted within him. He felt that his reaction was too abnormal, and it would be disastrous if Shen Qingyu found out, but he simply couldn’t control his body.
Cheng Che’s breathing was heavy. “Can I do anything I want?”
Shen Qingyu raised an eyebrow. “No, you have to listen to me.”
“Okay,” his Adam’s apple bobbed. “I’ll listen to you. I’ll do whatever you tell me to…”
