Chapter 61: The brave and strong Shen Qingyu actually cried…
In the end, they didn’t manage to do anything before Cheng Che’s mother interrupted them. However, Shen Qingyu hadn’t actually planned to do anything; he was just being playful. If it came down to it, he wouldn’t dare. Furthermore, he never expected Cheng Che to be so accommodating in this regard, almost hoping that Shen Qingyu would do something to him.
Cheng Che’s mother knocked on the door to call them for dinner. Shen Qingyu quickly got off Cheng Che, glancing at him shyly, “A-are you okay?”
Cheng Che also regained his rationality at this point. He nodded awkwardly and said, “I’m fine, let’s go eat.”
When the two of them emerged from the room, their faces flushed red, Cheng Che’s mother found it strange: “Is it that hot in the room? Why are both your faces as red as a monkey’s bottom? It’s October, that shouldn’t be right…”
Cheng Che immediately interrupted, “Mom, what did you cook today?”
Cheng Che’s mother was easily distracted. She said proudly, “Pork spare ribs soup and braised beef brisket with tomato. They’re both delicious. You’ll definitely love them.”
Before even sitting down, Shen Qingyu smelled the rich tomato scent floating in the air. He took a deep breath and said, “It smells so good! It must be delicious!”
“Of course! It’s only because Xiao Yu is visiting, otherwise I rarely cook.” Cheng Che’s mother pressed Shen Qingyu to sit next to her. Cheng Che could only sit across from them helplessly. He wanted to serve food to Shen Qingyu, but he couldn’t beat his mother to it.
Noticing Cheng Che’s resentful gaze, Cheng Che’s mother said righteously, “Xiao Yu, eat more. Look how skinny you are.”
In no time, Shen Qingyu’s bowl was piled up like a small mountain. He buried his head and struggled to eat, but couldn’t seem to flatten the mountain of food.
“That’s enough, Mom. He can get what he wants himself. Don’t put so much in his bowl,” Cheng Che proactively tried to help Shen Qingyu.
“Alright. Well, Xiao Yu, just get what you want yourself. Don’t be shy.”
Shen Qingyu chewed and swallowed the food in his mouth, saying, “I know, Auntie.”
…
After dinner, Cheng Che’s mother originally wanted them to sleep at home, but Cheng Che said they both had early classes tomorrow, and it would be too much trouble. It was better to return to school now, and the trip back would help them digest. Cheng Che’s mother reluctantly agreed.
After getting off the subway, they walked along the shadows, stopping and starting.
“Did you feel comfortable at my house today?” Cheng Che proactively took his hand. Finding his palm cool, he slipped it into his pocket. “Are you cold? I’ll warm you up.”
Shen Qingyu shook his head and said he wasn’t cold. “Your palm is so warm.”
“It is. I have a lot of vitality, so I don’t feel the cold. You, on the other hand, might have poor circulation, right?”
“How did you know that?” Shen Qingyu was surprised.
“I guessed. You’re too thin and don’t exercise much, so you’re probably a bit lacking in qi and blood.”
“But I eat a lot every day!” Shen Qingyu defended himself.
“You call that a lot? It’s like eating cat food; you always leave a lot.”
Shen Qingyu was choked up. “But I really am full.”
“I know you’re full. You wouldn’t starve yourself.” Cheng Che chuckled, gently pinching the flesh of his cheek with his other hand. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t be so fair and tender.”
“I’m fair and tender because I pay attention to sun protection,” Shen Qingyu said. “Unlike you sports students, you probably don’t pay attention to that, right?”
Cheng Che automatically ignored the “you guys” and perfectly substituted himself: “Do you have a prejudice against sports students? I pay attention to sun protection too, okay?”
Shen Qingyu stopped and observed his skin carefully. Among boys, Cheng Che was certainly on the fairer side, but he was still nearly one shade darker than Shen Qingyu.
“What are you looking at?” Cheng Che suddenly lowered his voice, leaning in close to his cheek. The warm air hit Shen Qingyu’s face, making him blink due to the tickle.
“I’m looking at you compared to…” Shen Qingyu wanted to compare him to Lu Xiao, but froze with the character ‘Lu’ on his tongue. He paused, then said, “…compared to others, you are indeed quite fair.”
The smile on Cheng Che’s lips faded. “You were going to say Lu Xiao, weren’t you?”
Shen Qingyu offered a sheepish smile.
“Next time you compare me to him again, I’ll…” His tone was dangerous, causing Shen Qingyu’s heart to tremble.
“You’ll what?”
“I’ll punish you.”
“Punish me?”
“Yes, punish you… to do something to me,” Cheng Che joked.
It took Shen Qingyu two seconds to realize what he meant. He punched Cheng Che angrily. “Try talking nonsense again! Then I’ll punish you!”
Cheng Che grabbed his wrist, pulled him into his arms, and draped his arm around his soft, slender neck. “Fine, I have no objection. You can punish me however you want.”
His tone was somewhat suggestive, yet very serious, making Shen Qingyu’s scalp prickle.
He always felt that Cheng Che seemed to have some special fetish in this area. Who constantly wants their boyfriend to punish them?
Shen Qingyu licked his dry lips. “Why are you so…”
“F***! What in the hell are you doing?”
A familiar voice rang out. Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che looked over simultaneously.
Not far away, a tall figure stood beneath a street lamp. His shadow was stretched long by the light. Standing against the light, his expression was unclear, but he radiated an air of ruthlessness.
It was Lu Xiao!
Shen Qingyu subconsciously tried to retreat from Cheng Che’s arms, but Cheng Che held him tightly. Shen Qingyu signaled with his eyes for Cheng Che to release him, but was ignored.
“Cheng Che, let go of him now!” Lu Xiao hadn’t expected Cheng Che to be so blatant. He strode over, knowing he wouldn’t be able to control his strength, so he simply grabbed Cheng Che, trying to pull him away.
Cheng Che said coldly, “Why should I listen to you? My boyfriend hasn’t said anything yet.”
Lu Xiao’s face suddenly changed, becoming darker than the bottom of a pot. He gritted his teeth and squeezed out a few words: “What did you say?” He fixed his gaze on Shen Qingyu’s face, finding that Shen Qingyu was avoiding his sight, and his heart sank halfway.
At that moment, Lu Xiao felt like a clown. He clenched his fists tightly, unwilling to give up until he got an answer from Shen Qingyu.
“Shen Qingyu, what does he mean?”
At this point, there was nothing left to hide. Shen Qingyu’s lip was bitten white. Cheng Che instantly regretted his actions. He knew Shen Qingyu hated causing Lu Xiao such distress, so he had intended to use this opportunity to force his hand, but Cheng Che wasn’t happy now, because he saw Shen Qingyu’s eyes filled with panic and helplessness.
“Cheng Che and I… are dating,” he whispered, lowering his eyes.
Lu Xiao laughed coldly twice. “Then what am I? What the hell did you take me for? You were happy watching me follow you around like a pathetic dog, weren’t you? What is so great about this idiot? Is he just better at groveling than I am? Where exactly am I inferior to him!” he shouted, venting his frustration.
But even after this outburst, Lu Xiao didn’t feel relieved. The fury burned fiercely, fueled by sorrow. The fire grew hotter and hotter, almost consuming his body until it was a dry husk.
Tears welled up. Shen Qingyu said anxiously, “I didn’t… take you for a dog. I always treated you like a friend. A friend who, despite having a bad temper and lacking awareness sometimes, still has a genuine heart.”
“Lu Xiao, that’s enough. Xiao Yu never forced you to do anything, did he? Wasn’t all of that your own choice?” Cheng Che hugged Shen Qingyu, gently patting his back to comfort him.
Lu Xiao was so angry he laughed. He bit his back teeth, his jaw twitching. “Yes, I was a fool. I willingly rushed to be his dog. Aren’t you doing the same thing?”
Cheng Che frowned. “If you can’t talk properly, shut up.”
“Do I need you to tell me to shut up?” Lu Xiao took a step toward Cheng Che, grabbed his collar, and raised his fist high.
“Lu Xiao!” Shen Qingyu pushed him, his hands trembling as he shielded Cheng Che. “Don’t you dare!”
A hint of surprise flashed in Lu Xiao’s pupils. “You’re actually defending him.”
Shen Qingyu rubbed his damp eyes, insisting stubbornly, “We’re all roommates. Let’s talk things out calmly.” Shen Qingyu knew very well that a large part of the current situation was his own fault. If he had rejected Lu Xiao more clearly, if he hadn’t, in a moment of weakness, accepted that kiss, perhaps Lu Xiao wouldn’t have been given hope, and he wouldn’t be heartbroken and despairing now.
Hearing this, Lu Xiao’s hand slowly dropped. Flashes of their trips together went through his mind. He was unwilling to accept it. Didn’t Shen Qingyu feel anything for him at all? Was he, Lu Xiao, really so worthless, so unattractive? If he had been a little better, would Shen Qingyu have chosen him?
But all of this became an unsolvable mystery. Lu Xiao truly didn’t understand how he had become this self-pitying figure.
His eyes were bloodshot, crisscrossed with red veins. He stared intensely at Shen Qingyu for a long time. “There’s nothing left to say.”
With that, he turned and walked away, his back resolute yet lonely.
Shen Qingyu couldn’t bear it and took a small step forward, but Cheng Che pulled him back.
“Don’t go. If you truly want him to let go, don’t give him hope now,” Cheng Che said calmly.
Shen Qingyu’s eyelashes fluttered a few times. He nodded and said okay.
There were only two hundred meters left to the school gate, but Shen Qingyu felt like the distance was endless. He had fully prepared himself the day he accepted Cheng Che’s confession, but in the moment the confrontation happened, his mind went blank.
I think I’ve completely broken Lu Xiao now.
Unlike Shen Qingyu’s worry, Cheng Che was overjoyed. The moment Lu Xiao was about to throw a punch, Shen Qingyu had chosen to shield him. Didn’t that prove that Shen Qingyu considered him special?
“Cheng Che.”
“What is it?”
“Am I awful?” Shen Qingyu lowered his head, his voice shaky with tears. “I can’t even handle such simple social relationships…”
Cheng Che’s heart clenched. He quickly cupped his face to wipe away the falling tears, comforting him: “How could you be awful? Xiao Yu is amazing. Two people are completely smitten with you.”
Shen Qingyu’s tears extinguished Cheng Che’s fighting spirit. Cheng Che realized once again that his impulse today had genuinely caused Shen Qingyu sorrow and frustration, far exceeding what he had anticipated.
The brave and strong Shen Qingyu actually cried.
