Chapter 39: Homophobic, But Not Towards You
If it had been anyone else who dared to strike him, Lu Xiao would have retaliated immediately.
But this person was Shen Qingyu.
He couldn’t bear to scold or hit him, so he racked his brains for a suggestion: “Find a hotel and get him a room.”
That was a decent idea. Shen Qingyu was about to agree when he suddenly remembered a crucial detail: “Did you bring your ID?”
“…No.”
“How are you going to get a room without your ID?”
More importantly… it would be weird if he brought his ID just to play the drums at a bar!
Shen Qingyu rested his head in his hand, and his back-and-forth bickering with Lu Xiao was heard by Song Yu.
“Why don’t we let him stay at my place for the night?”
“No way.”
“You object to everything. Well, you come up with a solution then.” Shen Qingyu was a little impatient.
“I’ll go back and get my ID.”
“Isn’t that too much trouble?”
“Why not just leave him here?” Lu Xiao looked displeased.
Shen Qingyu gave him a fierce glare. He was the one who brought Song Yu to the bar; there was no way he would just abandon him.
Song Yu, who had been slumped over the table for a long time, suddenly stood up shakily. Shen Qingyu instinctively supported his arm.
He had had physical contact with Song Yu a few times before, but this was the first time Shen Qingyu felt his body temperature steadily rising.
“Where are you going?” Shen Qingyu asked worriedly.
Song Yu laboriously raised his arm and mumbled, “Restroom.”
Shen Qingyu guided him through the crowd to the restroom. Afraid that Song Yu might slip and fall on the wet floor, he stood outside the restroom, constantly monitoring the situation inside.
Meanwhile, Song Yu stood in front of the sink, quietly looking at his slightly disheveled reflection in the mirror. Then, he slowly raised his hand, pushed back his messy bangs, as if looking directly at his other self through the mirror.
“Are you done yet?” Shen Qingyu’s anxious voice came from outside the restroom.
Song Yu saw his own lips move in the mirror. He didn’t respond. He turned on the faucet, took off his glasses, and quickly splashed some water on his face.
Water droplets streamed down his forehead and across his high nose bridge, suspending at the tip of his nose. He quickly snapped out of his drunken state and left before Shen Qingyu could come in.
“You… washed your face?” Shen Qingyu pulled a pack of tissues from his pocket. “Wipe your face.”
Song Yu shook his head to refuse, wiping the water from his face with his large palm. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.
Shen Qingyu stared at his series of actions, feeling a little lost in thought.
“Sorry, I was a bit dizzy earlier. I’m much clearer now.” He avoided Shen Qingyu’s assistance and returned to his seat.
Although his words were coherent, Shen Qingyu could tell he was having some difficulty walking; at least he wasn’t walking in a straight line.
Lu Xiao glowered at him dismissively, finding him increasingly theatrical. “That’s great then. You can go home by yourself.”
“Mhm, you guys keep playing. I can manage on my own.” Song Yu’s voice was low and hoarse after drinking, sounding a little lonely in the noisy bar.
The more he said that, the less likely Shen Qingyu was to let him leave alone.
“I’ve had enough to drink. We will take you home.”
That single sentence from Shen Qingyu stunned the other two.
Song Yu clenched his fists tightly, putting his glasses back on before his dark gaze could betray his feelings.
Since when had Shen Qingyu and Lu Xiao’s relationship become close enough to be summed up as “We”?
Lu Xiao, who was still fuming earlier, felt much better after hearing this and was even a little excited. “Yes, we will take you.”
…
The three of them took a taxi to the ground floor of Song Yu’s building.
Song Yu didn’t say a word the entire way. He sat in the passenger seat, his jaw clenched into a rigid line, silently listening to Lu Xiao and Shen Qingyu talk. Although most of the conversation was initiated by Lu Xiao, and Shen Qingyu only occasionally responded, Song Yu still found it grating.
As soon as the taxi stopped, Song Yu got out without the slightest hesitation.
He didn’t let Shen Qingyu walk him upstairs, but in Shen Qingyu’s eyes, Song Yu’s behavior was just a matter of saving face.
“Are you really going to be okay?” Shen Qingyu worriedly asked, still not forgetting to text Song Yu, reminding him of post-drinking precautions.
Song Yu quietly thanked him and walked away without looking back.
So cold. Shen Qingyu thought.
“Alright, stop looking. I’ll take you home.” Lu Xiao draped an arm over Shen Qingyu’s shoulder, turning him around. “What’s there to see anyway?”
Lu Xiao’s action was too sudden. Shen Qingyu had to grab him to keep up. “Can you walk slower, or just let go of me?”
“Fine, slower.” Lu Xiao snorted with a laugh. “I just want to see how far apart the two of you live.”
In the same residential area, they couldn’t be too far apart.
Shen Qingyu counted the building numbers, took a shortcut, and immediately saw his own window. He pointed to the building in front of him: “See? It’s really close.”
Even Shen Qingyu himself was shocked. He never thought Song Yu lived so close to him!
Why had he never seen him in the complex before? Or had he seen him but just paid no attention?
Lu Xiao followed him all the way. Even when Shen Qingyu stood at his front door, Lu Xiao showed no intention of leaving.
Shen Qingyu sighed and obediently opened the door, letting him in.
Before he could turn on the light, he was flipped over and pressed against the wall by Lu Xiao.
What bug is biting him this time? Shen Qingyu muttered inwardly.
“Why are you so good to him?” Lu Xiao asked through gritted teeth.
“We’re roommates. What’s wrong with looking out for each other?”
“Then why don’t you look out for me!”
Isn’t he just looking for trouble? Shen Qingyu, taking advantage of the darkness, rolled his eyes blatantly. Then, he deliberately spoke with a passive-aggressive tone to tease him: “Do you need me to look out for you? I’m afraid you’d think I’m being too slow and acting like a ‘sissy’.”
Lu Xiao thought about it for a moment before suddenly recalling that he had said that exact phrase on the day they first met, when he was annoyed with Shen Qingyu for taking too long in the restroom.
So you were waiting for the right moment to bring that up, huh?
Lu Xiao pressed his cheek. He shook his head helplessly and said, “I was wrong, okay? I was talking nonsense back then.”
Shen Qingyu pursed his lips, forcefully suppressing the corners of his mouth. He reached out and turned on the light. The dark living room instantly brightened. He was facing the light source, but thankfully, Lu Xiao was significantly taller than him and blocked most of the light, saving his eyes from discomfort.
With the light on, Shen Qingyu could see clearly. Lu Xiao was clearly uncomfortable apologizing. Given his personality, he probably hadn’t apologized to anyone in years, right?
Shen Qingyu found it amusing and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Seeing him laugh, Lu Xiao also wanted to laugh, but he still felt a bit embarrassed. He forced himself not to smile.
A few months ago, Shen Qingyu never would have imagined that he would get along so well with Lu Xiao one day.
He remembered when they first met, he was both afraid of and annoyed by Lu Xiao, thinking he was rude and lacked emotional intelligence. But as time went by, he realized Lu Xiao had his endearing qualities too.
The memory of the day they first met unfolded like a scroll in Shen Qingyu’s mind, and he suddenly froze.
Considering the content of the phone call he accidentally overheard between Lu Xiao and his father in the hospital… on that first day, he had snapped back, “Were you not born by your mother?” out of anger at Lu Xiao’s rudeness. The flash of hurt and sadness in Lu Xiao’s eyes after he said that was, in retrospect, not his imagination.
Shen Qingyu instantly felt a little guilty. He realized he had unintentionally hurt Lu Xiao back then.
Thinking about it now, Shen Qingyu truly wanted to slap himself twice.
Lu Xiao had no idea why he suddenly zoned out. He only thought Shen Qingyu was adorable even when he was distracted. His lips were pink and looked perfectly kissable.
It had been a long time since he last kissed him, but Lu Xiao could still recall how soft Shen Qingyu’s lips were.
Lu Xiao stared at his lips and couldn’t resist. He bent down and kissed his upper lip.
Shen Qingyu was stunned. His pupils visibly shrunk and then widened.
Wait? What is this all about?
Shen Qingyu’s mind was filled with bold, magnified question marks.
He stammered, his voice trembling: “What are you doing?”
Lu Xiao was a little annoyed. “I’ve held it in for so long! What’s wrong with kissing you once?”
He admitted that his identity wasn’t exactly aboveboard, but they were technically together! He had endured for so long, alright?!
His words were incredibly ambiguous. Shen Qingyu’s brain froze after hearing them. He said dumbfounded, “What does holding it in for so long have to do with me?!” If he wanted to kiss someone, he should go find someone else! What kind of act is harassing your roommate?
Besides…
Shen Qingyu took a deep breath, lowering his voice: “Aren’t you homophobic? Why are you… why are you so desperate?”
Lu Xiao laughed in annoyance, pinching his cheek. “I’m homophobic, but not towards you.”
He had never said a romantic line like that to anyone. Shen Qingyu was the first. After saying it, he felt embarrassed, but he pretended it was a casual remark and pinched his cheek again.
Shen Qingyu didn’t care about his aching cheek. His brain needed a long moment to process the situation before he stuttered, “No, what do you mean? Don’t freak me out, okay? Are you sleep-talking because you drank too much?”
“I barely had a few bottles, okay? You think that little amount of alcohol is enough to get me drunk? Who are you looking down on?”
Dude, is that the point?!
Shen Qingyu felt like he and Lu Xiao were on completely different wavelengths, but he still tried to correct his thinking.
“I think you might be mistaken. Why don’t you go home and cool off?”
Shen Qingyu started giving him a long lecture, though his words were incoherent. He didn’t know if he could successfully brainwash Lu Xiao.
“You must be confused from drinking. I have hangover medicine at home. Take some medicine.”
“…”
Lu Xiao wanted to say he wasn’t sick and didn’t need medicine. But Shen Qingyu’s frantic rambling was kind of fun. His cheeks were flushed, and his lips were full and plump. The previous kiss was just a fleeting touch. He wanted to try something deeper.
Shen Qingyu could tell right away that Lu Xiao hadn’t listened to a word he said. It felt like trying to educate a mischievous child—mentally and physically exhausting.
Lu Xiao suddenly said, “I’ve been studying some theoretical knowledge online recently. Want to try again?”
“?”
Lu Xiao’s ears turned red as he said this. In fact, he hadn’t just studied kissing techniques; he had also learned some… ahem… indescribable knowledge. His video library was quite extensive, although the content was a bit inappropriate. For Lu Xiao, the content was still too much, but for Shen Qingyu, he had to bite the bullet and study. He didn’t want to be told he had “bad technique” again later.
