Chapter 38: “Where is He a Duck? He’s Clearly My Ancestor.”
However, when Shen Qingyu was actually sitting in the bar, he realized how wrong his assumption had been.
Under the flashing, flickering lights, Song Yu silently finished two bottles of beer.
Shen Qingyu slowly looked down at the milk stout and fruit wine in front of him, giving an awkward smile.
Is this what a top student is like? Claiming “I didn’t study at all,” then scoring perfect marks.
Shen Qingyu really wanted to denounce this kind of behavior, but before he could speak, he noticed the melancholy in Song Yu’s eyes.
Song Yu’s expression was usually indifferent, as if he didn’t care much about anything. Shen Qingyu rarely saw this look on his face.
Is he trying to drown his sorrows?
Shen Qingyu’s heart sank instantly. His first thought was that something bad had happened in Song Yu’s family.
“Are you… in a bad mood?” Shen Qingyu asked quietly, testing the waters.
Song Yu seemed momentarily dazed. He pushed up his sliding glasses. “No, why do you say that?”
“You’ve been drinking since you sat down here. I thought something happened.”
He shook his head. “Isn’t the point of coming to a bar to drink?”
That was true, but just drinking without anything else was too boring, wasn’t it?
Shen Qingyu looked around and saw a table of men and women nearby who had started playing dice. Within a few dozen seconds, a couple was passionately kissing in front of everyone.
“…” Never mind, just drinking is fine.
Shen Qingyu awkwardly sipped his milk stout, feeling a little out of place in this environment.
After the couple next to them finished kissing, loud cheers erupted, temporarily drowning out the bar’s lively music.
Sensitive as Song Yu was, he had noticed Shen Qingyu’s distraction early on.
“Is it good?” Song Yu raised his chin, his eyes focused on the milk stout in front of Shen Qingyu.
“It’s delicious,” Shen Qingyu enthusiastically recommended. “It’s exceptionally good.”
A bright cluster of light suddenly hit Song Yu’s face, and Shen Qingyu saw a small curve form at the corner of his mouth.
Shen Qingyu’s mood instantly lifted.
“Why are you acting like a child?” Song Yu’s voice was very soft, almost a murmur, yet Shen Qingyu heard it clearly.
His heart skipped a beat. Shen Qingyu squeezed the body of the milk stout can, producing a rapid, sharp “sizzle.”
“Nonsense,” he retorted with a flushed face. “What child would drink a milk stout?”
Song Yu raised an eyebrow meaningfully, not speaking, but the smile in his eyes deepened.
Shen Qingyu instantly understood his implication.
Darn it! Why did things suddenly get so ambiguous?
In his mind, he and Song Yu were the least likely to have this kind of vague atmosphere, yet the atmosphere created with him was the one Shen Qingyu was least able to handle.
When embarrassed, Shen Qingyu always made himself look busy. He first lowered his head to play with his phone, replying to all his unanswered messages in one go. Then his gaze began to wander everywhere, while he continuously mumbled to himself.
“I wonder what the performance is tonight.” Shen Qingyu saw the time approaching and intentionally introduced the bar to Song Yu. “This bar has performances every day. Last time I came, I saw a band playing.”
“You probably didn’t know this, but Lu Xiao and Chen Qiming formed a small band and occasionally perform here.”
At the mention of Lu Xiao, Song Yu’s eyes darkened.
He didn’t care about Lu Xiao’s band, nor where Lu Xiao performed.
He cared about… when did Shen Qingyu and Lu Xiao become so close? Even when Lu Xiao wasn’t around, Shen Qingyu could bring him up so naturally.
“He even plays the drums. It’s pretty cool, right?”
Song Yu didn’t answer, but Shen Qingyu didn’t feel awkward and happily chatted away by himself.
“I feel like he’s a really cool and unrestrained guy.” This was Shen Qingyu’s honest opinion. He genuinely thought Lu Xiao had a lot of character.
“His temper is just a bit bad, he explodes at the slightest thing.” Like a firecracker, Shen Qingyu silently added.
The moment he finished speaking, applause and cheers erupted in the distance.
Shen Qingyu looked over curiously and saw two familiar figures standing on the stage in the center.
“It’s Lu Xiao and Chen Qiming!” Shen Qingyu recognized them immediately. His volume suddenly increased, and he excitedly patted Song Yu’s fist, which was resting on the table.
A beautiful female DJ on the stage walked toward the four-person band, intentionally starting with Lu Xiao, handing a cigarette to each of them.
Lu Xiao waved her away, took out a box of cigarettes from his sparkling black jacket, put one in his mouth, then lazily lifted his eyelids and surveyed the area.
Compared to usual, there weren’t many people tonight.
His gaze paused, and when he saw Shen Qingyu, his head buzzed.
Lu Xiao thought he had misseen, narrowed his eyes for a closer look, and confirmed it was indeed Shen Qingyu.
He must have come specifically to see me, Lu Xiao thought excitedly.
There were no messages from Shen Qingyu on his phone. Did he want to surprise me?
Thinking this, Lu Xiao became even more excited, and he played the drums with more fervor than usual.
Shen Qingyu felt that Lu Xiao had likely seen him.
Because his gaze clearly lingered for a few seconds when looking towards their area, and Shen Qingyu felt their eyes had met.
In just that short time, when Shen Qingyu looked back at Song Yu, there were now four or five more bottles of beer in front of him.
Shen Qingyu: “?”
Song Yu was probably a little drunk. His eyes were hazy, staring blankly at Shen Qingyu.
“Why are you drinking so fast!” Shen Qingyu was greatly alarmed. “Don’t drink too much.”
Song Yu shook his head, then nodded. Shen Qingyu didn’t know if he had actually heard him.
After his performance, Lu Xiao smoked a cigarette to calm down before going to find Shen Qingyu.
When he saw him chatting with Song Yu, his face immediately darkened.
He hadn’t clearly seen who was sitting opposite Shen Qingyu on stage.
He walked up behind Shen Qingyu, simmering with anger. He was about to demand why he was drinking with Song Yu and hadn’t informed him, but the questions all died on his lips because he suddenly realized… with his current unofficial status, he had no standing to demand that Shen Qingyu report to him.
Damn it!
Lu Xiao cursed silently.
He started feeling upset, so he pulled out the stool next to Shen Qingyu and sat down abruptly, startling Shen Qingyu, who nearly stood up.
“…Are you crazy? You scared me to death.”
Lu Xiao felt he was beyond saving; even Shen Qingyu scolding him sounded cute.
He stayed silent, snatched the fruit wine in front of Shen Qingyu, took a big gulp, licked his lips, and couldn’t help but complain: “You come to a bar just to drink a soft drink?”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
“It’s fruit wine, not a soft drink.”
Lu Xiao scoffed, “This alcohol content isn’t even as high as a strong RIO. What’s the difference from a soft drink?”
“Alright, shut up,” Shen Qingyu felt a little embarrassed and quietly checked Song Yu’s expression.
Song Yu’s face was flushed. It was clear he was genuinely drunk. He struggled to open his eyes, and after recognizing Lu Xiao’s face, his lips tightened, and he closed his eyes again.
Lu Xiao: “…” Why does it feel like he’s judging me and mocking me?
Lu Xiao ordered several bottles of higher-proof alcohol for himself and finished one bottle in just a few gulps.
Shen Qingyu panicked a little. Song Yu was already drunk. If Lu Xiao got drunk too… that would be awful! He definitely couldn’t handle both of them!
So Shen Qingyu said, seemingly concerned, “Don’t drink anymore.”
Lu Xiao obediently stopped. “Why?”
“How old are you? Smoking and drinking like this is bad for your health,” Shen Qingyu said without blinking.
Lu Xiao couldn’t suppress the smile on his face. His heart was practically bubbling with joy.
It seems Shen Qingyu still cares about me. That’s more like it.
“Fine, but you have to tell me why you and he are here drinking.”
Shen Qingyu was taken aback. What did the two things have to do with each other? Is he going to keep drinking if I don’t tell him why?
“Song Yu and I live in the same neighborhood. We occasionally eat together.”
“Then why didn’t you invite me to eat?”
“I already told you, we live close to each other, and we both work at the same mall.”
“What?! You’re working?” Lu Xiao raised his voice, staring at him incredulously, as if Shen Qingyu had done something heinous.
“Can’t I work?” Shen Qingyu even started to doubt himself.
“Why?”
“Why else? To earn money,” Shen Qingyu rolled his eyes.
“Are you that short on money? Why didn’t you ask me? I’ll give you money.”
“Get out of here! Are you treating me like a duck [prostitute]!” Shen Qingyu hit him hard.
Lu Xiao wanted to retort, A duck sells his body, and you won’t even let me kiss you. Where is he a duck? He’s clearly my ancestor.
He genuinely didn’t understand why Shen Qingyu wouldn’t take his money.
Lu Xiao gave him a wronged look. He wanted to drink away his frustration, but remembering Shen Qingyu’s concern for his health, he could only irritably pinch the back of Shen Qingyu’s neck. He didn’t dare to use too much force, knowing Shen Qingyu was delicate and would cry out in pain from a simple touch.
Seeing that it was getting late, Shen Qingyu waved his hand in front of Song Yu’s face. When he saw Song Yu’s eyes follow his hand, he thought: Uh oh, he’s definitely drunk.
“I’m not talking to you anymore. I’m taking him home,” Shen Qingyu said with a determined voice.
“You’re taking him home?” Lu Xiao repeated through clenched teeth. “Do you even know where he lives?”
Shen Qingyu froze. Crap, he really didn’t know where Song Yu lived.
He had been to Song Yu’s place once, but the night was too dark, and he had taken a shortcut guided by Song Yu. Shen Qingyu hadn’t remembered the exact location, only the general direction.
And since the incident had passed some time ago, he hadn’t deliberately memorized it, and now he had practically no recollection.
Lu Xiao frowned, scrutinizing Song Yu with displeasure.
He looked outwardly fine, but his eyes were vacant, and he seemed listless.
Having seen Shen Qingyu, who got aggressive when drunk, Lu Xiao was a little unaccustomed to Song Yu’s quietness.
“He doesn’t look drunk. Is he faking it?” Lu Xiao grumbled.
Shen Qingyu clicked his tongue. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
“It’s true.” Saying this, Lu Xiao reached out and heavily tapped Song Yu’s shoulder.
Song Yu looked up blankly, his pupils unfocused, the dark centers following the neon light, as if he felt no pain.
“You!” Shen Qingyu was thoroughly angered by Lu Xiao’s roughness and hit his shoulder hard in return.
Lu Xiao rubbed his shoulder helplessly. “You hit me for him.”
“You were the one who started it!”
