Chapter 25: Roses – “Actually, Shen Qingyu still cares about me…”
Although Lu Xiao spoke dismissively, immediately after hanging up the phone, he fiercely punched the wall.
Shen Qingyu’s footsteps paused for a few seconds, then he turned around to leave.
“Shen Qingyu?” Lu Xiao said menacingly, “Why are you here?”
“…” His mind raced, but he fell silent when he saw Lu Xiao’s eyes.
Lu Xiao’s expression was fierce, his sharp eyebrows scrunched together, and his eyes were intense, like a threatened wild beast baring its fangs, ready to pounce at any moment.
But Shen Qingyu only saw the red blood vessels covering his eyes and his moist eye corners.
The wild beast had turned into a homeless little wild dog, holding its tail high in an aggressive posture, but its body was actually trembling.
“I came to use the restroom,” Shen Qingyu mumbled.
Lu Xiao: “What did you hear?!”
I heard everything that needed to be heard, Shen Qingyu thought silently.
“Huh?” But he still put on an innocent look, “Heard what?”
Shen Qingyu was very good at feigning innocence. He was naturally pretty, with large eyes and soft, fair skin. To look innocent, he just needed to slightly widen his eyes, open his mouth slightly to reveal a bit of his neat teeth, and stare straight at the other person with a bewildered gaze.
Sure enough, under his pure and innocent gaze, Lu Xiao was completely powerless. He turned his head and said, “You better not be lying to me.”
His tone still carried some resentment.
Lu Xiao had always been a person with a tough exterior. He disliked being seen through, and especially disliked others noticing his vulnerability; this gave him a sense of insecurity and panic.
But facing Shen Qingyu, even if he felt resentful, he couldn’t do anything to him. He just viciously poked him on the head with his index finger.
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“I didn’t hear anything, so how can I talk nonsense,” Shen Qingyu retorted confidently.
Lu Xiao’s hand naturally rested on his head and ruffled his hair twice. “Hurry up and go.”
Hey, what’s with this guy?
When they first arrived at the hospital, he was the one who desperately clung to him and wouldn’t let him leave, and now he was chasing him away?
Shen Qingyu was a little unhappy and shot him an angry glare, suddenly noticing Lu Xiao’s red ears.
He forcibly suppressed the upturned corners of his mouth and said perfunctorily: “Mm-hmm.”
Lu Xiao was more annoyed: “Still not leaving?”
“I’m leaving now,” Shen Qingyu said slowly. “Then take care of yourself.”
This concern was not only out of preserving their fragile roommate friendship but also because he genuinely believed Lu Xiao might fall asleep during the IV drip. If he had no one next to him, it would be bad if the blood flowed back.
Shen Qingyu’s sudden concern made Lu Xiao’s ears even redder, burning as if on fire, and the heat even threatened to spread to his cheeks.
He awkwardly grunted “Mm,” and watched Shen Qingyu’s retreating back.
Actually, Shen Qingyu still cares about me.
Lu Xiao thought very happily.
…
Cheng Che called Shen Qingyu after he had been gone for a while.
“I’m out! I see you,” Shen Qingyu walked against the flow of people and stood behind Cheng Che.
Cheng Che turned around, the phone still connected. “Why so late? Did something happen?”
Two voices of Cheng Che came simultaneously, and Shen Qingyu could clearly distinguish the difference. Cheng Che’s voice on the phone had a slightly granular texture, sounding more deep and mature than in reality, while Cheng Che’s voice in reality had more youthful energy.
In summary: both sound great.
“Nothing, I just spoke a few words with Lu Xiao,” Shen Qingyu told the truth.
Cheng Che’s expression instantly changed, alternating between green and white. He said grudgingly, “I feel like your relationship with him is quite good lately.”
“Is it?” Now that he mentioned it, Shen Qingyu also started to doubt himself. “Maybe we just got used to each other. Since we’re in the same dorm, it’s best if we can get along well.”
Cheng Che was quite spineless and was amused by Shen Qingyu’s cheerful and cute tone.
“Let’s go, let’s go, time to head back to school,” Shen Qingyu urged.
As they walked from the hospital toward the subway station, Shen Qingyu suddenly saw Gu Ye in the crowd.
He was the most conspicuous person in the group, easy to spot immediately.
Shen Qingyu pulled Cheng Che’s arm. “Wait a minute, I see my xuezhang (senior).”
Gu Ye stood rooted to the spot, letting passersby walk around him, his gaze fixed on Shen Qingyu. When he realized Shen Qingyu had seen him too, the corners of his mouth curved up.
Gu Ye actively walked toward him and greeted him: “What a coincidence. Why are you at the hospital? Are you sick?”
“I was about to ask you why you’re at the hospital,” Shen Qingyu smiled. “I’m here with a roommate. How about you?”
“It’s good that you’re not sick,” Gu Ye said gently. “I’ve been staying up late for competitions recently, and my eyes are a bit uncomfortable, so I came to get some medicine.”
At his explanation, Shen Qingyu noticed that his right eye was indeed abnormally red, but he had been standing with his back to the light just now, making it hard to see clearly.
“Then you should hurry up and see the doctor, don’t delay,” Shen Qingyu said nervously.
Gu Ye had a pair of sincere eyes that made it seem as if they were filled with love no matter who he looked at. Shen Qingyu had mistakenly felt in high school that “he must like me” many times because of his eyes.
“It’s fine, it’s not serious,” Gu Ye explained. “I haven’t been in touch lately because I’ve been busy with the competition. I just got back from out of town this morning.”
Gu Ye was a renowned genius in the Computer Science Department. Shen Qingyu had inquired about him right after enrolling, especially since he and his team had swept various competitions in the Computer Science Department, and even the entire Wen University.
“Let me guess, you definitely won an award, right!” Shen Qingyu fully trusted him.
“So certain?” Gu Ye’s tone carried a playful smile, which irritated Cheng Che.
“Yeah, because you were a study god in high school,” Shen Qingyu played along. “Which place did you get?”
He didn’t fully understand the prestige of the competition Gu Ye entered, but he knew that anything that made Gu Ye try so hard was at least a provincial-level competition or higher.
“Third place,” he said lightly.
“Provincial level?”
Gu Ye smiled slightly: “National level.”
Shen Qingyu blurted out: “That’s so awesome! You truly are amazing!” He gave two thumbs up, his eyes full of admiration.
“Do you have time recently? I remember someone said they’d barbecue for me next time. I wonder if I’ll ever get to enjoy it.”
Shen Qingyu giggled a few times, shyly saying: “I have time anytime.”
“Good, then I’ll contact you in advance.”
“Mm-hmm.”
Then Gu Ye bid him farewell, giving the silent Cheng Che a meaningful look before leaving.
“What a coincidence, I can’t believe I ran into him here,” Shen Qingyu sighed.
“Were you two close before?”
Shen Qingyu thought carefully. They should have been quite close, and he had once liked Gu Ye. But it seemed he had never asked Gu Ye why he became so aloof after the college entrance exam.
His aloofness was only particularly noticeable in contrast to his previous warmth. No matter what academic questions Shen Qingyu asked him, he would answer seriously.
But only limited to that.
This had bothered Shen Qingyu at the time. He later asked Yang Yu: “You know how friends who were very close during school stop contacting each other much after graduation, and even if they do, it doesn’t feel the same as before—what’s up with that?”
Yang Yu said: “That’s normal, right? It just means you were friends for a specific phase. It’s enough that you walked that path together. You don’t need to overthink it.”
“That’s a good way to put it,” Shen Qingyu said.
Cheng Che had already asked around about Gu Ye, and without exception, the reviews were all excellent—straight-A student, high intelligence, friendly and approachable, handsome…
But Cheng Che remained skeptical. Could a person really be this perfect?
Then why hasn’t he pursued Shen Qingyu?
Judging from his attitude toward Shen Qingyu, Gu Ye was definitely not just treating him as a friend.
So when he heard Gu Ye had won a national-level award, a sense of crisis arose.
“He’s one year ahead of you, right? How did you two meet?”
“I forgot, too. I think it was because of an English competition.” It had been too long, and those memories of Gu Ye weren’t very clear. “But he always looked out for me. He also guided me when I used to obsess over certain things.”
Shen Qingyu’s expression was gentle and nostalgic when he spoke of this story.
It was clear that Gu Ye was indeed very important to him.
Cheng Che felt a bit jealous. He knew that his relationship with Shen Qingyu was currently just that of compatible roommates, but he couldn’t control his emotions.
He said half-jokingly, half-sincerely: “Do you think I’m handsomer, or is he?”
Huh? How did the topic suddenly shift to this?
Shen Qingyu tilted his head, looking confused, but still obediently said: “You two are different types. I’d definitely say you’re handsomer in front of you.”
Cheng Che was slightly displeased: “What about in front of him?”
Before Shen Qingyu could answer, he pressed his lips together and leaned closer. The faint scent of his body wafted over.
Cheng Che wrapped his hand around Shen Qingyu’s neck without force, just lightly embracing it, looking as if he was threatening him to “think carefully before speaking.”
This childish action made Shen Qingyu laugh. He quickly said, “I’d say you’re handsomer in front of him too.”
Cheng Che slowly released his hand and let out a small “humph.”
“Happy now?” Shen Qingyu teased him.
He didn’t speak, but he couldn’t hide the smile at the corners of his mouth.
Outside the hospital was a street that looked like a morning market, and it was still crowded at this hour.
Cheng Che noticed his curious gaze and proactively asked, “Want to go have a look around?”
“Sure!” Shen Qingyu was always surprised by Cheng Che’s understanding of him. “I can smell the old-fashioned small cake.”
Cheng Che shook his head helplessly. “Don’t you get tired of eating these?” He was genuinely shocked that anyone could love sweets so much.
“Of course, you’d get tired if you eat too much, but I just like to eat the things I love until I’m sick of them,” Shen Qingyu said matter-of-factly. “Then I won’t eat them for a long time.”
Cheng Che followed behind him, thinking about how someone could be so cute, seemingly curious about every new thing. Although he wasn’t particularly good at socializing, he would never let a conversation drop when an old lady selling goods started talking to him.
Emerging from the market, his hands were full of things.
Cheng Che proactively helped him carry the bags. Shen Qingyu felt a little embarrassed: “I can do it myself.”
Cheng Che didn’t answer. He simply transferred the items to his own hands, then pulled out two stalks of roses from seemingly nowhere and placed them in Shen Qingyu’s hands: “You take charge of these.”
“?” Shen Qingyu’s eyes widened in disbelief, as if someone had performed magic in front of him. “What are these?”
“While you were busy eating, a little girl selling flowers asked if I wanted to buy flowers. I saw she only had two left, so I bought them both. They’re quite pretty, right?”
