Chapter 26: “Are you dating someone?”…
Soon after returning to school, Shen Qingyu received a message of concern from Yang Yu.
Shen Qingyu was considering where to place the flowers and was too lazy to type, so he put on his earphones and gave him a voice call.
“What is it?” Shen Qingyu asked casually.
There was no vase in the dorm, so he cut a mineral water bottle to a suitable height, filled it with tap water, and put the flowers in it.
Although it looked a bit makeshift, it added some color to the entire dorm.
Yang Yu asked teasingly: “Did you see the school confession wall?”
“No, I never look at the confession wall.” Shen Qingyu took a photo of the simple vase, satisfied with how it looked. “What’s wrong?”
“Are you dating someone?” Although Yang Yu spoke in a question, his tone was very certain.
“What?” Shen Qingyu laughed incredulously. “No, I’m not.”
Yang Yu drew out the end of his “Mm,” not immediately believing Shen Qingyu’s words: “I saw someone post a picture of you and Cheng Che on the confession wall, and you were even holding roses.”
Shen Qingyu was stunned.
Yang Yu quickly sent him the confession wall submission.
“Wall Submission: Looks like the P.E. guy is dating. My heart is broken… but seeing that his partner looks like a great beauty, I’m in love again. [Heart]”
The picture was exactly the one of him and Cheng Che walking on the road, talking and laughing. You couldn’t clearly see their features in the photo, but even the blurred silhouettes showed they were a perfect match in appearance. Especially with the two bouquets of roses in their hands, it was hard not to let one’s imagination run wild.
The comment section was buzzing.
“Pillar, I think you can’t tell the difference between the Ace and the King. Who dares to @ Cheng Che? I don’t.”
“You coward, I will. @Cheng Che”
…
Most people didn’t take the post seriously, and the comments were mostly people who knew Cheng Che treating it like a group gathering, with wide-ranging topics.
Shen Qingyu didn’t take it seriously either and calmly explained the origin of the two bouquets to Yang Yu.
Yang Yu suddenly felt let down and said lazily: “Alright.”
“How come I feel like you’re disappointed?”
“Of course I am! I thought you had found someone!”
Mindful that Cheng Che was also in the dorm, Shen Qingyu didn’t dare to be too obvious. He teased: “If that were true, how could I hide it from you?”
“That’s true,” Yang Yu said, giggling.
Shen Qingyu brought up running into Gu Ye at the hospital and mentioned that Gu Ye had even won a national-level award. When talking about this, Shen Qingyu spoke eloquently, as if he were the one who won the prize. Yang Yu didn’t know why he was so proud, but knowing how much he admired Gu Ye, he didn’t say anything, just listening distractedly.
“Holy cow!”
Yang Yu’s exclamation interrupted Shen Qingyu and startled him.
“What is it?”
“Cheng Che actually commented under that post! Well done, they actually summoned the person himself.”
Hearing Cheng Che’s name, Shen Qingyu couldn’t sit still anymore. He glanced at Cheng Che, who was sitting at his desk looking down at his phone, then quickly opened the campus confession wall, which he had long muted, before Cheng Che noticed his gaze.
What did Cheng Che comment?
The answer quickly appeared before him.
“I am Cheng Che. The person in the picture is my very good friend. Please do not randomly publish his photos on the internet. Thank you.”
Shen Qingyu silently read the sentence word by word. The next second, the post was already showing as deleted.
“Ooh, ooh, ooh, a very good friend,” Yang Yu repeated the words in a very strange tone, making Shen Qingyu blush.
He awkwardly coughed twice and said, “Um… I have something to do. I have to hang up.”
Without waiting for Yang Yu’s reply, he quickly hung up the phone.
Cheng Che had actually been listening in on Shen Qingyu’s conversation the entire time. Immediately after he ended the call, Cheng Che turned around and said apologetically, “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“You don’t mind? The photo on the confession wall?” Cheng Che rubbed his head, his flustered appearance making Shen Qingyu’s heart feel soft.
“I don’t mind.”
Since enrolling, Shen Qingyu was a familiar face on the confession wall. His level of acceptance for being posted on the wall was far higher than Cheng Che imagined.
“That’s good.” Cheng Che patted his chest. He paid extra attention to everything concerning Shen Qingyu.
Especially the content of the post and the unreliable comments from his mischievous friends in the comment section. He was afraid Shen Qingyu would be upset if he saw them.
…
Lu Xiao quickly recovered from his illness.
He treated the entire dorm to a barbecue dinner.
There was a very popular barbecue restaurant on the University Town snack street, and Lu Xiao had reserved a table in advance.
Shen Qingyu was rushed throughout one class. When the dismissal bell rang, he didn’t even have time to mark down the homework the teacher assigned before quickly grabbing his backpack to meet them.
Lu Xiao had ordered a lot of food. Although there were four guys eating barbecue together, judging by the quantity he ordered, they definitely wouldn’t be able to finish it.
Shen Qingyu sat down and started eating the bread slices. The crispy, soft bread with the sweet flavor of butter—he ate two skewers in one go.
Lu Xiao looked at him with a disappointed expression: “Who eats bread first at a barbecue?”
“I like eating it, is that a problem?” Shen Qingyu playfully stuck out his tongue. “There’s no particular order.”
His crimson tongue flashed briefly in front of Lu Xiao, who instantly forgot what he was originally going to say.
“There’s no way we can finish this much,” Shen Qingyu said dramatically. “Who ordered all this? It’s too much.”
Cheng Che said: “Lu Xiao ordered it. He was even worried it wouldn’t be enough.”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
“If we can’t finish it, we’ll pack it up, what’s the big deal,” Lu Xiao said dismissively.
“But barbecue doesn’t taste good once it’s cold,” Shen Qingyu said weakly.
Song Yu, who hadn’t spoken since Shen Qingyu sat down, suddenly interjected, “Let’s find two more people.”
Shen Qingyu had intended to suggest this, but he hadn’t expected Song Yu to say it first. He winked at Song Yu.
Song Yu didn’t return his look; he just picked up his glass and slowly took a sip, hiding his slight smile behind the rim of the cup.
The four of them didn’t have any mutual friends. Shen Qingyu racked his brain and could only think of two people: Chen Qiming and Yang Yu.
Neither of them had much interaction with Song Yu, and Shen Qingyu wondered if Song Yu would feel awkward.
Shen Qingyu subtly glanced at him out of the corner of his eye and saw that he hadn’t raised any objections and didn’t look displeased. Only then did he say, “Then I’ll message them both and tell them to hurry over!”
Chen Qiming and Yang Yu agreed quickly upon hearing someone was treating them to barbecue. Chen Qiming, especially, showed up in front of them in ten minutes on his bike.
Yang Yu was a bit slower. Knowing he was eating with five P.E. students, he had dressed up elaborately, but when he arrived at the barbecue restaurant and saw they were all familiar faces, he complained to Shen Qingyu after sitting down:
“You should have told me it was with them! I wouldn’t have put on makeup then.”
Shen Qingyu was innocent: “Aside from them, I don’t know any other P.E. friends.”
Lu Xiao felt a sense of schadenfreude when he saw Yang Yu. He was already imagining a confrontation between the official partner and the mistress in his mind. He desperately hoped to see Cheng Che’s “mistress” status exposed.
Unfortunately, Yang Yu didn’t focus his attention on anyone else; he chatted with Shen Qingyu the entire time.
Lu Xiao could only perk up his ears and secretly listen to them talk. This sneaky behavior was becoming increasingly habitual for him.
“By the way, didn’t you say Gu Ye won an award last time? I saw it posted on the school’s official account today.”
Shen Qingyu took out his phone and checked the school’s official account. Sure enough, there was a post with a few pictures of Gu Ye and a congratulatory message about him winning a national award.
“Senior Gu’s reputation is completely maximized!” Shen Qingyu exclaimed.
Yang Yu said: “Isn’t it? How can someone be so perfect? Even his award photos and blue background ID picture are so outstandingly handsome.”
Shen Qingyu nodded in agreement.
“Thanks to you for bringing this up, I need to send another message to Senior Gu,” Shen Qingyu opened his chat box with Gu Ye and sincerely composed a congratulatory message.
Although he had mentioned it last time, the setting wasn’t right then, and his words weren’t formal enough.
Gu Ye replied quickly. He first thanked Shen Qingyu for the congratulations, then took the opportunity to ask if Shen Qingyu had time to go out for Japanese food with him, sending the address along as well.
Shen Qingyu agreed right away, insisting that he had to be the one to treat this time.
Gu Ye didn’t mind who paid, and since Shen Qingyu was so insistent, he agreed.
After eating a few slices of bread, Shen Qingyu had lost his appetite, but still managed to force down a few skewers.
Chen Qiming, however, was having fun eating and asked why Lu Xiao wasn’t eating. After hearing him say he wasn’t hungry, Chen Qiming happily took the skewers in front of him and ate them with gusto.
Yang Yu wasn’t too interested in the food and chatted with his boyfriend for a while. “Xiaoyu, want to go out for a meal tomorrow night? It’s been a long time since we’ve eaten off-campus, right?”
Shen Qingyu didn’t answer immediately, blinking his round eyes at him. Yang Yu guessed immediately.
He blurted out: “Do you have a date already?”
Lu Xiao, Cheng Che, Song Yu: “…”
The three of them stopped what they were doing.
Lu Xiao spun his lighter on and off, making a “da-da” sound. Cheng Che took a sip of cola, the soda fizzing wildly in his mouth. Meanwhile, Song Yu slowly pushed up his glasses, a chilling light flashing in his eyes.
Shen Qingyu gave a dry laugh, looking around nervously, and said softly, “Yeah, I’m going out for Japanese food with Senior Gu tomorrow.”
Yang Yu was very interested: “Which Japanese restaurant is it? Now you’ve made me want some too.”
“I think it’s called Yakitori (Grilled Bird).” Shen Qingyu directly showed his chat box with Senior Gu to Yang Yu. This open and honest action further confirmed Lu Xiao’s assumption—that Yang Yu was his rightful boyfriend.
“That place is famous! I heard it’s really authentic. You go try it and see if it’s good; we can go next time if it is.”
“Mm-hmm.” Shen Qingyu nodded vigorously several times. “Okay!”
Lu Xiao thoughtfully glanced at Shen Qingyu. Before pulling his gaze back, he suddenly met Cheng Che’s eyes.
For once, there was a rare absence of mutual hostility in their gazes.
On the way back to school, Yang Yu and Shen Qingyu walked ahead, arm in arm. Chen Qiming, who had come on his bike, cycled off, leaving them behind quickly.
Only three boys were left walking behind Shen Qingyu, keeping a small distance between them. They appeared distant, yet they had to walk together, as no one wanted the others to get closer to Shen Qingyu, creating a silent deadlock.
The most rational Song Yu suddenly broke the silence and asked, “Is Japanese food good?”
Cheng Che, though puzzled, went along with it: “I don’t know, I’ve never had it.”
Lu Xiao, whose mind was unusually quick this time, and seemingly the “only one” of the three who had eaten Japanese food, said somewhat provocatively: “How about we go try it?”
All three had their own hidden motives, but at this moment, they reached a bizarre consensus.
