Chapter 24: Secret – “Xiaoyu, you are truly kind.”…
Shen Qingyu hadn’t fully woken up yet in the morning when he habitually reached for his phone to check the time, groggily tapping on the latest message.
The filthy image made his pupils suddenly contract. He was so scared that he flung his phone away, which hit the floor with a loud “pop.”
That pervert had reappeared after disappearing for a while!
Shen Qingyu’s eyes widened, and his breathing became rapid. He used his sweat-soaked palm to cover his eyes, not wanting anyone to see the fear pouring out of them.
This was the first time the pervert had so bluntly displayed his disgusting desire.
The photo was still in a dark, pitch-black environment. The only light source was a mobile phone of an unrecognizable model, which was playing Shen Qingyu’s transformation video. And then, sharply highlighted by the light, was the extremely horrifying… thing.
F**! What does he want to do?*
Shen Qingyu’s mind felt clogged with paste. He felt he couldn’t use normal human logic to deduce his purpose.
He can’t just want to gross me out, right?
Shen Qingyu started to wonder if he had made any enemies. But even if someone had a grudge against him, they wouldn’t resort to this method, would they?
“Is this your phone?”
Song Yu’s voice pulled Shen Qingyu back from his thoughts.
“It’s mine.” The words had barely left Shen Qingyu’s mouth when he remembered he hadn’t locked the screen and quickly reached out to stop him, “I can pick it up myself—”
But Song Yu had already bent down, his thin pajamas hanging down to expose the lean, firm lower back unique to a young man.
“The screen protector seems to be cracked,” Song Yu said casually.
He had deliberately pressed the lock button while picking up the phone. He knew Shen Qingyu didn’t want anyone to know he was being harassed.
Every time Song Yu saw Shen Qingyu’s teary, reddened eyes from panic and his lips bitten until they were white, he felt an intense sense of excitement.
Only this way could prove that Shen Qingyu cared about him.
It turned out the phone had auto-locked. Shen Qingyu immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
“It’s fine, I’ll just replace the protector.”
Song Yu nodded, placed the phone back next to his pillow, and lifted his thin eyelids. “Be careful.”
“…I know.”
He left quickly, carrying a black backpack, his back held perfectly straight. Except for that drunken night, Shen Qingyu never saw his footsteps falter again; Song Yu had returned to his previous distance.
This made Shen Qingyu slightly annoyed.
But it was also different from before. The old Song Yu would have probably just silently picked up the phone and handed it back to him, then quietly left.
…
Lu Xiao unilaterally entered a cold war with Shen Qingyu.
He went out drinking and clubbing almost every day, reeking of smoke and alcohol, but still made sure to return to the dorm right before curfew.
Shen Qingyu couldn’t stand the pungent smoke smell and frowned, keeping his distance from him.
Lu Xiao glanced at Shen Qingyu contemptuously. He carelessly took out a pair of underwear from his closet and went to the bathroom to shower.
When he came out, he saw Shen Qingyu had opened the window to its widest setting, and the smell of smoke in the dorm had become very, very faint.
Shen Qingyu hadn’t noticed Lu Xiao’s recent abnormal behavior because, in his eyes, everything Lu Xiao did was normal.
The water droplets on Lu Xiao hadn’t completely dried. He walked out openly, wrapped only in a towel, but was caught off guard by the evening breeze and shivered.
He was only wearing underwear, which was practically naked. Shen Qingyu turned his back, resting his hands on the window edge, pretending to admire the night view.
Downstairs, several affectionate couples were still flirting. Only when the dorm manager yelled at the top of their lungs, “The doors are locking, hurry up and come in!” did they take their time sharing a kiss before parting ways.
Shen Qingyu was not surprised by this.
Because the female dorm manager was easier to deal with than the male one, girls were allowed to return a few minutes late. So, unlike other schools, couples at Wen University usually said goodbye under the men’s dorm building. This was a unique feature of Wen Da.
“What are you looking at, Xiaoyu?”
Shen Qingyu didn’t know how long Cheng Che had been standing behind him. He said, “I’m watching the couples downstairs.”
Cheng Che smiled: “Are you envious?”
Shen Qingyu was a little shy, “No, I’m not.”
As Shen Qingyu’s gaze drifted, Cheng Che gently tapped the tip of his nose.
The tip of his nose felt like it had been set on fire. The heat quickly spread, and soon Shen Qingyu’s cheeks were also flushed.
Lu Xiao rolled his eyes, utterly infuriated, and yelled: “Close the window, it’s too noisy.”
The ambiguous atmosphere instantly vanished.
Men’s Dormitory C-Wing was near the road, and there were sometimes noises.
But it clearly wasn’t noisy at all just now! If anything, Lu Xiao’s voice was the loudest.
Shen Qingyu secretly complained in his mind, but his hand obediently closed the window.
…
Shen Qingyu spent the next morning at the library. The cafeteria was too crowded at noon, and he couldn’t find an empty seat, so he packed a meal back to the dorm.
The dorm room was still the way it was when he left in the morning, and Lu Xiao was still sleeping deeply under his covers.
“No way, still sleeping?” Shen Qingyu whispered.
He tiptoed over to Lu Xiao’s bunk. From his angle, Lu Xiao’s lips were tight and pale, and his brow was furrowed in pain.
The strangest thing was his rapid breathing and heavy gasps, as if he was enduring pain.
Shen Qingyu clicked his tongue. What’s wrong?
Out of concern for his roommate, Shen Qingyu slowly approached and asked softly, “Lu Xiao, are you okay?”
“Ugh…”
A painful groan escaped his throat.
Shen Qingyu quickly stepped onto the ladder and reached out to touch his head.
“He’s burning up!” He pulled his hand back immediately, scalded by the heat.
“Lu Xiao, Lu Xiao, wake up.” Shen Qingyu tried to wake him, but Lu Xiao was clearly delirious and unconscious from the fever.
This terrified Shen Qingyu, and he forgot everything else.
He frantically rummaged through several of Lu Xiao’s drawers and finally found a box of fever medicine, only to realize it was expired!
This person lives too carelessly! Expired medicine still in the drawer!
Shen Qingyu could only open his own medicine box, taking out his thermometer and fever medicine. While doing so, he saw the lozenges Lu Xiao had given him last time.
He touched the small, round tin box and muttered, “Maybe you’ll actually be useful today.”
It took a lot of effort for Shen Qingyu to wake Lu Xiao up, and then to help him sit up. Sweaty from the exertion, he thought bitterly: “It would serve you right if you burned to death; maybe then our entire dorm could get into grad school.”
But he quickly softened when he saw the pain on Lu Xiao’s face, and thought again: “We’re roommates, after all. It would be bad luck for someone to die.”
However, even after taking the fever medicine, Lu Xiao’s temperature only dropped slightly, still hovering at 38.5°C.
Shen Qingyu was worried that a persistent fever might cause brain damage, and his mind was a mess.
His first instinct was to call Cheng Che; unconsciously, Cheng Che had become his default person to turn to when facing problems.
Cheng Che was probably busy; the call wasn’t answered. As Shen Qingyu was climbing down the ladder, Lu Xiao leaned out halfway and suddenly hugged him.
His heart nearly jumped out of his throat. If his balance hadn’t been so good, he would have fallen down with Lu Xiao.
“You!” Shen Qingyu felt a rush of fear.
Lu Xiao’s body radiated a scorching temperature, which was uncomfortably hot against Shen Qingyu.
“Mom… don’t leave me… I’ll be good…”
His voice was hoarse and broken.
Shen Qingyu was instantly rooted to the spot, unable to move.
Cheng Che quickly called back. Shen Qingyu quickly patted Lu Xiao’s back comfortingly, saying in his gentlest tone: “Okay, okay, I won’t leave you.”
At this moment, Lu Xiao seemed to regain some consciousness. Satisfied, he lay back down, panting heavily, his chest rising and falling as if he was oxygen-deprived.
“Xiaoyu, what’s wrong?”
Shen Qingyu sighed: “Lu Xiao has a fever; it won’t go down, and he’s talking nonsense. I feel like he’ll burn his brains out if this continues.”
Cheng Che said: “Wait for me, I’m coming back right now. I’ll take him to the hospital.”
“Okay, I’ll wait for you.”
Cheng Che rushed back in less than ten minutes and touched Lu Xiao’s forehead. “Still burning up. When did you give him the fever medicine?”
Shen Qingyu checked his phone: “Less than two hours ago.”
The time interval was too short to give him more fever medicine, but letting him burn up like this wasn’t an option either. “Let’s go, wake him up and take him to the hospital.”
On the way to the hospital, Shen Qingyu’s pensive look was noticed by Cheng Che.
“What’s wrong? Are you worried about him?” Cheng Che asked in a lowered voice, leaning close to Shen Qingyu’s ear.
Lu Xiao was already awake, his head heavy and his limbs weak. He felt like his body was in a steamer, making him want to scream from discomfort.
Shen Qingyu shook his head. “No, I’m just thinking.”
He was thinking about Lu Xiao’s words.
“Mom… don’t leave me… I’ll be good…”
This sentence kept looping in Shen Qingyu’s mind. He suddenly realized that perhaps Lu Xiao, like Song Yu, also came from an unhappy family. This had nothing to do with Shen Qingyu, but he felt the awkwardness and helplessness of having accidentally stumbled upon a secret someone didn’t want exposed.
Logically, Lu Xiao was an adult and could register himself at the hospital after being woken up, but he stubbornly acted like a childish brat, clinging to Shen Qingyu and refusing to let him go.
Lu Xiao stated righteously: “I’m this sick; you want me to be alone?”
Cheng Che didn’t indulge his bad temper: “You have hands and feet, why can’t you be alone? Xiaoyu and I have done more than enough by bringing you here.”
To prevent them from arguing in public, Shen Qingyu quickly said: “Alright, alright, since we’re already here, I’ll stay with you for a bit. It’ll save you from becoming delirious again.”
Since Shen Qingyu said so, Cheng Che naturally listened to him, though his tone was still a bit stiff: “Xiaoyu, you are truly kind.”
“We’re roommates, after all,” Shen Qingyu mumbled softly.
Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che didn’t leave until Lu Xiao had received his prescription and was ready to get an IV drip.
Shen Qingyu went to the restroom first. Cheng Che waited for him outside the hospital. When he came out, he ran into Lu Xiao, who was talking on the phone with a gloomy expression.
He swore he wasn’t interested in listening to other people’s privacy, but Lu Xiao’s voice was so loud that even if he covered his ears, he could hear him arguing with his father.
“I’m not coming back.”
“My mom? My mom died ages ago, have you forgotten?”
“That woman is two months younger than me. How is she my mother?”
“You go celebrate your 50th birthday with your little girlfriend. I won’t be an eyesore.”
