- Chapter 2 - Soul Swap
It hurts… My head is buzzing so much I can’t even lift it…
Pei Jinghang tried to force his eyes open, but his body refused to obey.
“They’ve been asleep all night. Why haven’t they woken up yet?”
“Both students are able-bodied. Could they really have fallen from a two-meter wall without protecting their heads?”
“Could the Alpha have landed on his head to protect the Omega?”
“How is that possible! The Omega was the one pinned underneath…”
The voices seemed to be nearby. Pei Jinghang tried to open his eyes, but the dizziness in his head left his limbs stiff and unresponsive. No matter how he tried, he couldn’t move.
“How are the two boys doing? Why haven’t they woken up after all this time? Could they have actually suffered brain damage… This can’t be! Jiang Yi has his college entrance exams next year. If his brain is damaged, his entire future will be ruined!!”
It was Director Song’s voice.
Pei Jinghang felt Director Song’s voice getting closer and closer. He wanted to lift his leg and kick Song Desheng. This bastard was only worried about whether Jiang Yi could take the college entrance exams. What if he was the one who suffered brain damage from the fall?!
Pei Jinghang kicked out his leg in retaliation. Seeing the person on the bed move, the school doctor and Song Desheng rushed forward and asked gently, “How are you? How do you feel?”
His body felt like it was about to explode with pain. Pei Jinghang opened his eyes blearily, and his mind finally cleared.
He wasn’t sure if it was an illusion, but he felt as if he had lost a whole size. He raised his hand to touch the back of his head and found that the feel of his palm and hair was completely different from before.
“Tell me honestly, did Pei Jinghang corner you in the alleyway after school? Jiang Yi, don’t be afraid, just nod! I will stand by you no matter what.”
Perhaps because he had just woken up, Pei Jinghang hadn’t noticed how Song Desheng was addressing him. Song Desheng looked at Pei Jinghang with a face full of fatherly affection, making the problem student—who always opposed him—break out in goosebumps. He tried to sit up, but when he saw Song Desheng about to help him, Pei Jinghang flinched and quickly waved his hand, “No, no need.”
If I let you raise your precious hand to help me, I won’t be able to bear the suffering.
“Hmm?” Pei Jinghang suddenly felt something was wrong with his own voice. He quickly raised his hand to touch his throat, but as he scanned his entire body, he realized that it wasn’t just his voice—his whole body was… hard to describe.
Why are these hands so delicate? They look like a girl’s. Not at all like my own mighty and fierce self…
Why is this school uniform worn so primly? How devoid of personality!
The voice is so refined and scholarly, and it sounds just like that Jiang Yi I despise…
Wait, Jiang Yi.
A wild conjecture flashed through his mind. It was so fantastical that Pei Jinghang broke out in a cold sweat and swallowed hard the next second.
Could it be… that I’ve turned into Jiang Yi?!!!
When he finally saw “himself” lying on the other side, Pei Jinghang had no choice but to forcibly accept this devastating reality.
During this time, Pei Jinghang continued to slap himself and lift his shirt to look at his upper body in front of the school doctor and Song Desheng. His bizarre behavior led everyone present to believe that Jiang Yi had suffered brain damage from the fall.
Song Desheng even considered taking Pei Jinghang to a larger hospital. Just then, the “Pei Jinghang” opposite him slowly opened his eyes. The true owner of that body, seeing his own form gradually awaken, felt a chilling sensation, as if he were staring at a fake human.
As soon as Jiang Yi opened his eyes, he looked up to see Director Song angrily tapping his hand, scolding him, “Jiang Yi only memorized your name because I told him to! If you have a problem, come to me, but don’t bully him, alright? Do you know he’s taking the college entrance exam next year?!”
Who? What? Why does this first-person perspective feel so weird?
Jiang Yi only remembered waiting for the bus as the sky gradually darkened. Suddenly, Pei Jinghang had lunged at him from above, and their heads collided with a sickening thud. When he regained consciousness, he was already lying in a hospital bed.
“It’s not like the teacher forbade you from moving out. You could have just waited one more day! Now look what happened—the school security took your luggage and handed it over to the principal. Even I can’t get you out of this now! You’d better figure out how to beg the principal for mercy yourself. I can’t help you.” Song Desheng waved a hand at Jiang Yi, saying things that left him utterly bewildered.
But clearly, there was more than one thing that bewildered Jiang Yi.
The school doctor had placed his backpack far out of reach. His body didn’t feel the same as before, either. Jiang Yi felt taller, stronger, and the clothes he was wearing weren’t the ones he’d been wearing before the accident. This color-blocked outfit was definitely not his style—it looked more like something Pei Jinghang would wear.
“…Who is he?” Jiang Yi pointed to the person sitting on the other bed, feeling his body instantly petrify.
His voice had become unrestrained and arrogant, no longer clean like before.
“Don’t think you can deny it just because you deliberately provoked Jiang Yi. Seeing as you’re both bouncing around, it doesn’t look like anything serious. You two can rest for another half day this morning. Remember to submit your self-criticism letters during the afternoon exercises.” Song Desheng pointed at Jiang Yi in frustration. He wanted to plead for Pei Jinghang, the problem student, but couldn’t bring himself to do so for the sake of appearances. Instead, he could only roar, “As for how to write the self-criticism, you’ll have to hear it from the principal. I suggest you quickly take Jiang Yi to the principal’s office to apologize. You might even get your luggage back, and you’ll still make it in time for the start of school today.”
The principal of Hangda Affiliated Middle School was Chen Jiqing. He and Father Jiang had been colleagues during their early days in the countryside. The former educated youth now sat in a leather chair with a protruding belly, watching his specially-monitored problem student repeatedly provoke his former colleague’s son. For a moment, he didn’t know how to explain this to the other parent. Fortunately, Jiang Yonghua and his family were constantly on business trips; otherwise, they would surely be wailing and demanding to send their child to study abroad.
Chen Jiqing had previously consulted Jiang Yi for his opinion. Jiang Yi really didn’t want his parents to get too involved in his school affairs. After careful consideration, Principal Chen could only say, “Pei Jinghang, apologize to Jiang Yi. Then, write a 2,500-word self-criticism, read the public reprimand on the podium, and we’ll call it even. After that, I’ll return your luggage, but you’re not going anywhere. My neighbor across the street is renting out his place cheaply because he needs money urgently. You’ll move in there, and I’ll keep an eye on you all day to see how you get into trouble then!”
“No, no, no, Principal Chen, I don’t think this punishment is very appropriate. Besides, Student Pei didn’t do it on purpose. Look at his heroic posture! His physique! How could he possibly be trying to pick a fight with a classmate on purpose?” Pei Jinghang completely ignored Jiang Yi’s dark expression beside him and continued to feign generosity and passion. “As for the apology… it’s unnecessary. Moving across from your house is also unnecessary. It’s only half a day; there’s no time to hand over the room and move out, don’t you agree? Let’s just write a quick self-criticism to show sincerity, and we’ll be good. Harmony brings wealth, after all!”
Hearing Jiang Yi say something so utterly lacking in class, Chen Jiqing’s mouth twitched, but he said nothing. He simply turned to Pei Jinghang and asked, “Since Jiang Yi isn’t holding a grudge, Pei Jinghang, remember to write your self-criticism after you finish moving tomorrow. If you dare be late on the first day of school, just see how I’ll deal with you, kid!”
For the first time, Pei Jinghang saw a true reflection of his own face, which was as black as the bottom of a pot. He automatically ignored the four words “Fuck your grudge” written all over Jiang Yi’s face and said persuasively, “Well, since we’re all set here, I’ll take Pei Jinghang back and settle things privately! Goodbye, Principal! Long live the Principal!”
With that, Pei Jinghang dragged his luggage with his left hand and pulled Jiang Yi toward the corridor with his right.
The moment the door closed, Chen Jiqing watched the two boys walk away. He took a sip of the perfectly steeped tea beside him and wondered, “I don’t remember Jiang Yi being such a chatterbox before…”
It was morning exercise time. Pei Jinghang brought Jiang Yi to the rooftop, a place usually deserted. Looking down at the students on the playground, who looked like ants in formation, his previously agitated mood slowly calmed. A smile unconsciously spread across Pei Jinghang’s face, but Jiang Yi’s dark expression hadn’t faded. He finally managed to open his mouth and ask, “What do we do now?”
“What do you mean, ‘What do we do?’ Didn’t the principal just say it? Pei Jinghang, you’re moving out and writing a self-criticism immediately.” Pei Jinghang gloated. “Two thousand five hundred words, by the way.”
Jiang Yi had no energy for his snide remarks. His sharp mind quickly processed the next steps. “Fine, I’ll move out and write the self-criticism for you. The family driver will pick you up and take you back to the Jiang residence in a bit. Remember to rest for the half-day… and for heaven’s sake, don’t cause any trouble.”
“You think I’ll play nice?” Pei Jinghang was still smiling, but his eyes darkened. “As long as Pei Xiuying is in that house, I won’t acknowledge my family roots. I won’t let the Jiang Family off the hook.”
At the mention of Pei Jinghang targeting the family maid again, Jiang Yi’s temper flared. “…I told you before, Pei Xiuying has powerful backing. You can’t touch her.”
With that, he stepped forward, using his height advantage to easily turn Pei Jinghang’s face toward him. He spoke as gently as possible: “We’ll deal with everything after we switch back. If you cause any trouble for me, I’ll run naked across the campus with your face in the next second.”
“Let’s just keep things peaceful and live each other’s lives well, alright?”
Pei Jinghang stared at his own face so close he could almost touch it, and suddenly felt a strange sense of eeriness. It took him a moment to realize that Jiang Yi was actually trying to comfort him. He snorted with laughter, pulled his phone from his backpack, and said to Jiang Yi, “Let’s not exchange this thing after all. What’s your number? Let’s exchange WeChat IDs just in case.”
Jiang Yi snatched the phone from Pei Jinghang’s hand, quickly searched for his own WeChat ID, and added it. Then, he pulled two more phones from his own backpack, tossed one to Pei Jinghang, and warned, “I’ll help you move later. This is a spare phone for contacting your family, don’t let Pei Xiuying and the others find out.”
“Got it.” Pei Jinghang took the two phones and waved. “Let’s cooperate well then. Remember to write the self-criticism, Pei Jinghang.”
The sky gradually glowed with a golden light. Hearing the chatter and laughter of students returning to their classrooms made the two realize this wasn’t a dream.
Now, without even trying, I’ve become Jiang Yonghua and his wife’s child, Pei Jinghang thought silently.
