- Chapter 3 - Hormonal Imbalance
Pei Jinghang accompanied Jiang Yi to retrieve their luggage from the security guard. The two walked to the school gate in silence.
It was a mild spring day in March, with fresh leaves and a gentle breeze. At ten in the morning, Pei Jinghang felt a bit drowsy from the spring slumber. In a daze, he heard someone calling his name. A Mercedes-Benz slowly rolled down its window at the school gate, and the neatly dressed driver inside smiled and waved at him. “Young Master, the housekeeper has prepared seafood porridge for you and is keeping it warm. Let’s head home now.”
Only then did Pei Jinghang remember he was posing as Jiang Yi. At the same time, Jiang Yi, without changing his expression, lightly nudged Pei Jinghang with his elbow, signaling him not to blow their cover. Pei Jinghang understood instantly and played along with the driver. He walked over to the curb where the car was stopped, but instead of getting in immediately, he pointed to Jiang Yi, who was standing by the bus stop with his luggage, and said, “Uncle, my classmate also needs to go home this morning. Could you see if you can drop him off on the way?”
If I let this directionally challenged Jiang Yi go home on his own, he might not even make it back by next week.
The driver, who often picked up and dropped off Jiang Yi, was named Liu. He was an honest man in his early thirties who knew how to keep his composure. He sensed that the Young Master’s behavior today was a bit strange, but he merely smiled without asking any questions. He automatically popped open the trunk and called out to Jiang Yi, who was waiting for the bus, “Get in.”
Jiang Yi inwardly grumbled about Pei Jinghang’s meddling, but he still had to thank Uncle Liu with a polite smile. Fortunately, the rented apartment wasn’t far from school. In less than five minutes, the car pulled into the residential complex where Pei Jinghang had previously lived.
Uncle Liu was about to help Jiang Yi with his luggage when the young man simply lifted the bags out of the trunk with one hand and headed straight for the stairs. Seeing Jiang Yi’s current height of 185 cm, Uncle Liu remarked in surprise, “You’re an Alpha, aren’t you? No wonder you’re so strong.”
Jiang Yi didn’t feel like wasting words on his family. He merely nodded at Uncle Liu, then turned to Pei Jinghang in the car and said, “We’ll talk on the phone.”
Though they shared the same face, Pei Jinghang wore it with a youthful, flamboyant air, while Jiang Yi’s features seemed increasingly cold and aloof. For once, Pei Jinghang didn’t get annoyed with Jiang Yi. He was thoroughly enjoying his time as Jiang Yonghua and his wife’s child. Noticing Uncle Liu’s bewildered expression as he tried to figure out their relationship, Pei Jinghang quickly urged him to head home. “He’s just a junior,” he explained. “Principal Chen asked me to look after him. Let’s go.”
Ever since Pei Jinghang caused a scene at the Jiang residence last time, Jiang Yi seemed to have deliberately reduced the number of servants in the house. When Pei Jinghang returned to this place he had longed for day and night, he found it strangely unfamiliar.
“Where’s Pei Xiuying?” Pei Jinghang asked casually, feigning a blank expression as he sat at the table eating breakfast.
Pei Jinghang had been raised under this Jiang family nanny’s name since childhood. From elementary school onward, he was lucky to see her even once a month. Before he developed any will to resist, Pei Xiuying would beat and kick him whenever she lost at mahjong. If he hadn’t discovered he was Jiang Yonghua’s biological child as he got older and threatened her into secretly sending him money, he probably wouldn’t have even been able to support himself.
Over the years, Pei Xiuying had always been hiding out for some reason or another, and even Pei Jinghang didn’t know her final whereabouts. If he hadn’t followed her into the Jiang residence a few months ago, he might have even thought the Jiang family had “shelved” her permanently.
“Sister Pei received a call from the Old Madam recently and was dispatched to a manor to do farm work,” said a newly hired maid. She was quite pretty, and a faint scent of jasmine pheromones wafted from her.
Fortunately, this new batch of servants were quite discreet and stayed out of trouble. Pei Jinghang enjoyed a smooth breakfast for once, without picking any fights with the Jiang family.
Jiang Yi’s body couldn’t handle much food. After just a few bites, Pei Jinghang felt full up to his throat. He was about to get up and return to his room when, just as he was savoring the moment, the long-time butler beside him spoke up: “Young Master, I noticed you stopped for about ten minutes at Zanyang Community near your school. May I ask what you were doing there? If you’re facing any trouble, I can contact the Old Madam to resolve it for you.”
Pei Jinghang froze. He shot a suspicious glance at the butler, whose expression remained perfectly normal. Uncle Liu had just returned from parking the car in the underground garage—he couldn’t have told the butler. That left only one possibility…
He was wearing a real-time GPS tracker.
“How do you know?” Pei Jinghang glared coldly at the meddling servant. “Are you spying on me?”
“I’m only following orders,” the butler replied, his gaze deliberately sweeping over Pei Jinghang from head to toe. “And please, avoid any overly intimate contact with other Alphas.”
It seemed Jiang Yi was not only being watched but also bugged.
Stuck in Jiang Yi’s body, Pei Jinghang couldn’t lash out directly. Instead, he sneered as he swung the door open and beckoned to the butler standing in the hallway. “If you’re so fond of staring, why don’t you come in and take a good look? I’m always welcome.”
Before the butler could react, the last trace of warmth vanished from Pei Jinghang’s eyes. He slammed the door shut, locked it, and bolted into the bathroom.
He frantically began searching his body for hidden microphones. Even after stripping down to his bare skin, he found nothing unusual.
He was wearing nothing but ordinary brand-name clothes and a school uniform. Jiang Yi wasn’t carrying any other small objects…
His gaze fell on the watch on Jiang Yi’s left wrist. Drawing on his mechanical expertise, Pei Jinghang dismantled it in a few swift movements.
Finding a smart chip that didn’t belong in a mechanical watch, he immediately flushed it down the toilet to prevent further surveillance. After reassembling the watch and re-examining his clothes, he finally let out a heavy sigh of relief. But as he looked up, the large bathroom mirror immediately reflected his current appearance.
Under the light, Jiang Yi’s fair upper body glowed with a faint pink hue, giving him a fragile quality that seemed as if a light pinch would leave a mark. His shoulders were slightly narrow, and his collarbone dipped into a delicate, well-defined hollow above his flat chest, clear and striking. His arms were slender yet possessed a youthful firmness, with the subtle ripple of muscle beneath the skin complementing his Omega status and hinting at a unique, raw innocence.
This appearance was starkly different from the robust physique Pei Jinghang was accustomed to. The strangeness left him momentarily dazed, as if he were seeing a completely new version of himself through Jiang Yi’s eyes.
With a flushed face, he reached for the back of his neck. The Omega-exclusive gland itched slightly. Pei Jinghang gently peeled off the blocker patch, and the faint scent of sea salt instantly filled the entire bathroom.
This was Jiang Yi’s pheromone—a rare and serene fragrance. If Jiang Yi weren’t his sworn enemy, Pei Jinghang might have truly grown fond of this captivating and profound scent.
Perhaps it was because he’d worn the blocker patch for too long, but Pei Jinghang suddenly felt an inexplicable heat spreading through his body. His scent gland itched more and more intensely. In less than three minutes, he watched as his skin flushed red. The sea salt pheromones in the bathroom grew so thick he almost felt like he was drowning in the ocean.
Fighting through the discomfort, he reached for his phone, but his fingers trembled uncontrollably. After finally dialing Jiang Yi’s number, he spoke the moment the call connected, his voice laced with an urgency and weakness he never showed before: “Jiang Yi, I… something’s wrong. My body’s burning up, and my gland is itching like crazy.”
Hearing his tone, Jiang Yi immediately knew something was wrong. He quickly calculated the date—his heat shouldn’t have been due yet. But he instantly understood what was happening and said, “Check the nightstand. There’s a pheromone inhibitor there.”
Pei Jinghang threw on his jacket and rushed to the nightstand, fumbling to pull open the drawer. Inside, he saw rows upon rows of syringes packed tightly together.
Just as Pei Jinghang was about to inject the medication, his gaze inadvertently fell on the needle bruises on Jiang Yi’s side. His heart tightened sharply.
He hesitated for a moment, wondering why Jiang Yi had so many bruises, but the intense discomfort racking his body left him no time to think. He could only slowly plunge the needle into his arm and push the medication into his system.
As the drug gradually took effect, the searing heat and the maddening itch in his gland slowly subsided. He slumped against the wall, gasping for air, his forehead drenched in sweat. Strands of damp hair clung to his cheeks.
It took a long while before he finally caught his breath. Only then did Pei Jinghang remember that the phone call was still connected. He picked up the device and said to Jiang Yi on the other end, “What kind of illness is this? Does it have something to do with the bruises on your side?”
There was a moment of silence from Jiang Yi’s end before he finally spoke. “Those are from treating my pheromone dysregulation syndrome. I’ve always had this condition, but I haven’t let many people know.”
Hearing Jiang Yi’s words, a complex wave of emotion surged through Pei Jinghang. “You should have told me about this sooner.”
Jiang Yi snorted coldly. “And tell you? What’s our relationship, exactly?”
Pei Jinghang was left speechless. He suddenly felt that the dynamic between them had shifted in a subtle, indefinable way. As he was lost in thought, Jiang Yi spoke again: “Get some rest. I still have a self-criticism letter to write. We’ll talk later.”
With that, Jiang Yi swiftly hung up.
Pei Jinghang lowered his phone and surveyed the unfamiliar room, his heart heavy with a complex mix of emotions.
He recalled the injustices he had endured over the years, and then the unexpected revelation of Jiang Yi’s own hidden illness. For a moment, he felt completely disoriented. When he finally composed himself, Pei Jinghang stripped off his clothes again. He wanted to shower, to truly get acquainted with this body he would have to adapt to for a long time.
As the warm water cascaded over him, Pei Jinghang closed his eyes. Jiang Yi’s image involuntarily surfaced in his mind, that facade of cold indifference masking a fragile core.
He shook his head, trying to banish the thoughts. Don’t let yourself get any strange ideas, he told himself.
Pei Jinghang knew he couldn’t live under Jiang Yi’s identity forever. Moreover, he sensed that the Jiang Family’s relationship with Jiang Yi wasn’t as harmonious as it appeared on the surface. He didn’t know what had happened within the family all these years, but as long as he, Pei Jinghang, was still alive, he would eventually get the explanations the Jiang Family owed him.
