After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The Weasel Spirit
The window was wide open, and the sunlight was warm on her skin, but she couldn’t feel a trace of warmth.
When she woke up, Jiang Huaiyi’s mind was completely blank. She couldn’t remember any of her cultivation techniques.
If something were to appear now, she would not only be scared to death, but she would also be completely helpless.
Because of the tension, she couldn’t even feel the pain of her nails digging into her palms.
The wind blew through the treetops, past the window, and hit her, making her feel cold.
The time on her phone was still ticking. As it neared eleven o’clock, her inner fear grew.
When the time stopped at 59 minutes, Jiang Huaiyi couldn’t hold on anymore and quickly went to knock on the door.
She shouted loudly: “Daoist Shen, open the door, I have something to tell you!”
The door in front of her opened with a “swoosh,” as if Shen Wensi had been standing right behind it.
Jiang Huaiyi’s hand, raised high, froze in mid-air, awkwardly suspended.
Her fingers were slightly bent. She hadn’t expected her to open the door so quickly.
She had just decided to tell her her secret, but now that the person was actually standing in front of her, Jiang Huaiyi felt she couldn’t say it.
Her two hands were clasped together. Looking at the other person’s clear and indifferent eyes, she didn’t know what to say.
Shen Wensi let out a small “humph”: “If there’s nothing, I’ll close the door.”
Saying that, she put her hand on the door again, ready to close it.
Jiang Huaiyi, at this moment, looked like she was resigned to her fate. She knew that if the other person closed the door, it wouldn’t be so easy to open it again. She gritted her teeth and said: “I’ll tell you a secret.”
She had gathered all her courage and was quickly thinking of the right words.
Shen Wensi raised an eyebrow: “You’re afraid of ghosts.”
Jiang Huaiyi: ?
She looked at her in confusion. Although she had asked this question before, Shen Wensi should have only been guessing then.
Why was she so certain now?
“How did you know?”
Shen Wensi moved to the side, revealing the room behind her, and made a “please” gesture: “I told you I took your pulse. You fainted from fright.”
Jiang Huaiyi was stunned for a moment, and then she immediately understood.
Her previous words were not a test, but a confirmation.
Shen Wensi was being malicious and knew that she was afraid of ghosts, so she deliberately said those words to tease her.
The stereotype of ghost cultivators being evil was deepened in her heart.
Jiang Huaiyi entered and stepped on her shoe hard, then, as if she had just regained her balance, she said in a panicked tone: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
Shen Wensi smiled and pulled back her foot. The two of them sat far apart, facing each other until noon.
As expected, there was a sound of gongs and drums outside, and a very mournful sound of erhu came up from below.
It gave Jiang Huaiyi goosebumps. The destructive power of this traditional instrument was second only to the suona.
She listened for a while but couldn’t make out what tune it was.
But a sense of irritability arose in her heart for no reason. Her mind felt like it was stuffed with paste.
She asked: “We can’t just sit here and wait for death, can we?”
Shen Wensi: “No rush. We have to wait until dusk. A wedding is a ceremony held at dusk. You can’t see any clues until dusk.”
Seeing her composed expression, Jiang Huaiyi also relaxed a little.
She had thought that Shen Wensi was on the same level as her. According to outsiders’ views, she shouldn’t be so proficient in this line of work.
But now it seemed that she had dabbled in almost every field and was quite accomplished. Logically, she shouldn’t be on the same level as a person like her.
Moreover, her house was in the central villa area of Rongcheng. According to the current housing prices, it would cost at least three million, not to mention the renovation of the villa.
She looked very rich no matter how you looked at it. If she were that rich, she would definitely be lying down at home.
But it was not good to ask her that. Jiang Huaiyi started playing Snake on her little phone.
After eating some of the things Shen Wensi brought in the afternoon, time quickly passed.
The colorful clouds in the sky were layered like fire, and the sunset was a vibrant red. A few migrating geese flew in from the distance.
As the daylight faded, Jiang Huaiyi put away her phone. Shen Wensi’s slender hand held her phone with one hand.
Her hand hadn’t stopped all afternoon. It seemed like she was more addicted than she was.
Her phone was a new flip phone. Jiang Huaiyi couldn’t even imagine how fun it was. It must be much better than her pager, which she had been using for several years.
A knock suddenly came from the door, and Shen Wensi put away her phone under her gaze.
The two of them got up and opened the door. Standing outside was Ge Shihong. Behind him was a man wearing a patchwork robe, with a Bagua mirror hanging from his waist, dressed as a Xuanmen practitioner.
He looked to be around sixty years old. The crescent crown on his head held his hair meticulously in place. He had a thin face and high cheekbones.
He looked shifty-eyed, especially the sharp glint in his evil yellow eyes, which made Jiang Huaiyi feel uncomfortable.
She just felt that he wasn’t a good person, especially from his facial features. She felt even more uneasy.
Ge Shihong introduced the two of them to the man behind him: “Master Wu, these are the two masters I invited earlier, Master Shen and Master Jiang. The following ritual will be hosted by them with your assistance.”
Jiang Huaiyi’s face was not very good. It was rare for a main family to invite two masters. Now they had invited three, and they hadn’t even discussed it with them before asking them to assist. It was very disrespectful.
Even Shen Wensi’s face turned cold. After Ge Shihong finished speaking, he left, leaving the man named Wu standing there.
Jiang Huaiyi quickly searched for any information about the person in front of her and found that there was no such person in the side branches of her fellow disciples.
A sense of vigilance rose in her heart.
But Old Master Wu didn’t seem to notice the displeasure on their faces. Instead, he bowed respectfully: “Hello, two young friends. Let’s talk as we walk.”
Jiang Huaiyi couldn’t find fault with him. At least he was polite. It wouldn’t be good for her to embarrass him.
She asked Shen Wensi with her eyes and saw her nod slightly.
The two of them followed him and went down the stairs together.
Since last night, they hadn’t been out. Jiang Huaiyi only now noticed the changes in the large courtyard. It was full of festive decorations.
The empty courtyard was now crisscrossed with red silk. In the middle of the main hall was a large “喜” (xi – happiness) character.
The original coffin had long since disappeared. On the offering table in the middle, there were incense, candles, fruit plates, and dragon and phoenix candles. Everything was ready, and it looked like a real wedding was about to take place.
It was a very traditional Chinese wedding. Jiang Huaiyi had thought that with the Ge family’s modern decor, Miss Ge would prefer a Western wedding.
There were many tables in the front yard. When they were upstairs, the sounds seemed to be isolated, and they didn’t hear the bustling crowd below at all.
There were many guests below, but what was strange was that everyone’s clothes were a little old. She and Shen Wensi looked a little out of place standing in the middle of the crowd.
But no one paid attention to them, so it wasn’t too bad.
She didn’t know when the red carpet on the ground was laid down. The weeds and stones underneath were not cleared. The road was bumpy, and it was bumpy to walk on.
The three of them walked through the bustling dining tables in the middle and arrived at the center of the main hall.
Old Master Wu pointed to the two coffins behind him. Next to the coffins were two prayer mats, and in the middle was a fire basin. He motioned for the two of them to go there.
Jiang Huaiyi cursed silently. It seemed that at the last minute, the Ge family wasn’t even pretending anymore. They had put the two coffins directly in the main hall.
She naturally refused to go over. She just stood there, motionless. She had strongly opposed this kind of feudal dross when she first came.
Old Master Wu handed the red invitation on the table to the two of them and asked: “Do you two know why you’re here?”
Jiang Huaiyi put her hands behind her back and refused to take it: “Daoist Wu, you should know that this is not right, right? We’re already in the new China. Why are we still doing this kind of feudal superstition? Miss Ge has no emotional foundation with this person at all. The two of them will be reincarnated soon. There’s no need for them to be together. A forced melon is not sweet.”
Old Master Wu’s originally smiling face instantly turned cold. He scoffed: “I called you a young friend, but you’re really taking yourself seriously. If the main family hadn’t invited you, do you think you could have come here? There are plenty of people who will do this job for this amount of money if you don’t.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Huaiyi walked straight outside, and a smile even appeared on her face.
She really wanted to leave. She praised this Master Wu in her heart for being such a good person.
But the next second, Shen Wensi grabbed her arm, and with a pull, she was directly pulled back.
She took the memorial from her hand, pulled Jiang Huaiyi, and walked straight to the coffin, throwing the memorial in.
She also scattered a handful of paper money. The fiery red tongues of flame licked the paper money that was thrown down, and the fire in the basin instantly grew strong.
But the memorial that was thrown in the middle had no signs of being burned. After the flames disappeared, it was still intact in the basin.
It just wouldn’t burn. Shen Wensi chuckled: “It seems that Miss Ge really doesn’t want to marry this gentleman. Didn’t you tell Master Ge that a forced melon is not sweet?”
Jiang Huaiyi’s back was to the coffin, and she had no intention of turning around. She didn’t even dare to look at a dead person, so she had been facing away from the fire basin.
After hearing Shen Wensi’s words, she subconsciously turned her head. She saw two corpses in red wedding clothes in the coffin.
One was plump and full, as if it had just died, and its feet were splayed open. The other was just a skeleton, and the clothes were hanging loosely on it.
But she only glanced at the two people’s legs and quickly looked away. She looked down and saw that the red memorial in the fire basin really had no signs of being burned.
Old Master Wu’s face was ugly as he looked at the red paper in the fire basin. He came up and grabbed Jiang Huaiyi’s hand: “Your fate is different. You can definitely burn it!”
Saying that, he put her hand into the charcoal basin, trying to pick up the paper. Jiang Huaiyi felt a scorching heat on her fingertips.
She tried to break free, but she found that Old Master Wu’s fingers, although withered, were very strong, like steel, and held her so she couldn’t move.
If her hand went down, she would definitely be burned. At that moment, she kicked Old Master Wu hard.
He let out a cry of pain, and a sharp crack came from his knee hitting the ground.
He knelt on the ground, and the hand that was holding her tightly also let go.
She was extremely unhappy in her heart. She thought to herself, “I’m afraid of ghosts, but am I afraid of you? Do you really think I’m easy to bully?”
Just as she was about to curse him, she saw Old Master Wu raise his face.
His face was ferocious. His eyes had completely turned yellow, and two pointed fangs were biting his lower lip. Fine yellow hair had grown on both sides of his cheeks.
Jiang Huaiyi let out a loud scream and hid behind Shen Wensi: “A weasel! The weasel has become a spirit!”
