Chapter 5: I Admit I’m Afraid of Ghosts, Okay?!
At this moment, Jiang Huaiyi felt all the blood in her body rush to her head.
Ever since her eyes were sealed, she couldn’t see ghosts, but now, for some reason, she could see them again.
Or was this not a ghost?
The black-blue arm seemed to stretch out from under the bed, smooth and bare. From the moment she saw it, her face went from pale to flushed in just one second.
The next second, she used her other foot, which wasn’t grabbed, to kick the arm hard.
It felt hard and unyielding under her foot. The hand didn’t let go; instead, it gripped even tighter.
Jiang Huaiyi saw purple-red corpse spots quickly appearing on its body. Another hand also stretched out from under the bed and firmly grabbed the edge of the bed. The creaking sound from under the bed grew louder.
Jiang Huaiyi was so scared that tears came out. Seeing that her kick was useless, she quickly formed a “Thunder Ancestor Seal” with her palm facing up and silently chanted the “Five Thunder Spell.”
This was the fastest solution at the moment. She didn’t even have time to take out her magic tool from her bag beside her.
She formed the hand seal in one go, but the expected lightning and thunder did not appear.
The other hand grabbed her pants leg. Jiang Huaiyi was horrified. She didn’t understand why her Taoist magic failed at this critical moment. She tried twice more, and her fingers were almost cramping, but it didn’t work.
The thing under the bed slowly crawled up. Under the light from outside, Jiang Huaiyi even saw its thick, black hair and smelled the stench of rot.
She didn’t dare to stay on the bed and wait for death. If she was going to die today, she would die outside.
She suddenly jumped off the bed, not even grabbing her backpack, and tried to walk to the door.
The pulling force on her leg was immense, but the only sound was her own footsteps on the floor.
There was no sound of a heavy object being dragged. Jiang Huaiyi didn’t dare to look at her feet. She dragged the thing under her feet and walked to the door.
The hand on her foot moved up. She felt a bone-chilling coldness, like an ice pop that had just been taken out of the freezer, pressed against her exposed skin.
Jiang Huaiyi quickly pulled out the latch, dragged her feet, and walked to Shen Wensi’s door across the way.
She felt her entire leg was numb, and her body felt like it had just climbed out of an ice cave.
The only thing that was still warm was her extremely flushed and excited head. The tips of her ears were even red-hot.
She felt that the chilling wind on her neck had started to blow again. She no longer hesitated and knocked on Shen Wensi’s door: “Open the door! Open the door quickly!”
The moment she knocked, in less than a second, the door opened. Shen Wensi stood in front of her, her clothes perfectly in place.
Her head was almost touching the door frame. She was looking at the pale-faced Jiang Huaiyi with an inquiring look.
Jiang Huaiyi’s lips trembled. She wanted to speak but found that she couldn’t say a single word.
She felt her body was already frozen. Shen Wensi’s voice also became ethereal: “What’s the matter, Daoist Jiang?”
Jiang Huaiyi pointed her trembling finger behind her. She saw an old-fashioned dressing table behind Shen Wensi, with an oval mirror on it.
In the mirror, Jiang Huaiyi saw her own horrified face, and behind her, a naked, long-haired corpse with its face covered.
It was staring at Jiang Huaiyi with a pair of bloodshot eyes. The entire thing was almost hanging on her.
The black-purple arm, covered with corpse spots, was wrapped around Jiang Huaiyi’s neck.
She looked up at Shen Wensi, and her voice was filled with a hint of a sob: “Can’t you see? There’s a ghost on me…”
Shen Wensi’s gaze shifted for a moment, but it didn’t fall on her.
Jiang Huaiyi didn’t see the ghost flinch the moment her eyes swept over it.
Shen Wensi stared at the neck locked by the arm: “Don’t the Xuanmen say that Dao Qi lasts forever and evil spirits don’t approach? How did it get to you…”
Jiang Huaiyi didn’t care about the sarcasm in her words, because the ghost behind her was about to rest its head on her shoulder.
Her flushed ears were now colorless. A nauseous feeling surged up again.
Since she had already knocked on her door, Jiang Huaiyi approached her without thinking.
For some reason, the ghost behind her retreated a little when she moved forward. She moved a little closer.
The hand that was holding her neck also obediently let go.
Jiang Huaiyi cursed inwardly. Good, good. Even ghosts are picking on people. Shen Wensi isn’t afraid, but she is, so it comes to scare her.
She stood completely in front of Shen Wensi, almost pressing against her black trench coat. The thing behind her, with those murky and terrifying eyes, was still staring at her.
But it didn’t get any closer to her. She immediately relaxed a little. That nauseous feeling surged up again. This time, it wasn’t about wanting to throw up.
It was a dizzying spin. She hadn’t even said thank you yet. Her vision went black, and she fainted.
Shen Wensi caught the person who had fainted in her arms. Her hands steadily supported her. She was a little confused.
The thing at the door was still looking at the two of them. Its blood-red eyes were still staring at them. She didn’t know why it didn’t come closer.
Her cold eyes looked over. The thing glared at her with some unwillingness. It couldn’t decide whether to go forward or not. Such sweet flesh and blood had not appeared for a long time.
It didn’t look like it was a human. The souls who had been through a scare were even more delicious. The Ge family was almost all dead. There were no extra people for her to eat.
Looking at the delicious flesh and blood in front of her, she didn’t want to give up at all, but she always felt that this woman in front of her was inexplicably dangerous. Her intuition told her not to get close.
But Jiang Huaiyi was also attracting her.
Seeing the thing at the door approach, Shen Wensi’s face instantly became cold. She just made a quick grab in the air and then quickly closed the door.
A faint explosion sounded outside the door. The gongs and drums below paused for a moment and then started again in a lively manner.
Shen Wensi carried the unconscious person into her bed.
When Jiang Huaiyi woke up, she found that it was already bright outside. The sounds of people outside came into the Ge family’s courtyard and reached her ears.
She opened her eyes and found herself still lying on the wooden bed. She immediately sat up, took off the socks on her ankles, and looked at them. There were two black handprints on them.
She had been so pathetically scared that she fainted. She didn’t know when her yin-yang eyes had opened again.
She turned her head to look for Shen Wensi’s figure and found her sitting by the door, leisurely drinking tea.
It was still the thermos cup she had brought from home, and wisps of steam were still rising from it.
Her face was hazy in the mist and could not be seen clearly. The sunlight passed through the steam, making her eyebrows and eyes dazzling.
She didn’t know why she was in this line of work. With a face like hers, she could be an actress.
Jiang Huaiyi sat on the edge of the bed. This room seemed much more normal. It didn’t have the damp, musty smell that her room had.
“Thank you, Shen… Daoist.” Since she didn’t know her name, she still called her that.
Shen Wensi’s expression was indifferent. She was still sitting by the door. She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there.
“You had heart palpitations and were scared. Your limbs were cold. It seems you fainted from fright.”
Jiang Huaiyi was surprised: “You can take a pulse?”
She had never heard that ghost cultivators had such an ability. She knew about Daoist doctors, a branch of the Xuanmen, who would learn a little bit of Zhu Rong’s art.
Shen Wensi did not answer her. Instead, she got up and sat next to her.
She was too nervous last night. Now Jiang Huaiyi was a little more relaxed. A cold scent from her body entered her nose.
She subconsciously moved to the side. Shen Wensi said: “You’re not afraid of ghosts, are you?”
Jiang Huaiyi’s heart suddenly jumped to her throat: “Afraid of ghosts? Me? Absolutely not!”
This was her biggest secret since she was a child. Although the two of them were in a partnership now, it was hard to guarantee that she wouldn’t talk about it after they were done.
The two factions had always been at odds. It had been so many years, and she had finally changed her image in the eyes of her fellow disciples. She absolutely could not let this rival know.
Shen Wensi nodded as if it were a matter of fact: “You’re right. Daoist Jiang is a member of the Xuanmen. How can you make a living if you’re afraid of ghosts?”
Jiang Huaiyi breathed a sigh of relief and slowly moved to the window. She looked down and found that not a single piece of the paper money that had fluttered all over the sky yesterday was visible in the courtyard.
The area below was bustling as they set up the wedding venue. Everything was red. The originally tightly closed main door was also open.
There were many people going in and out of the door. She had an impulse to go out now and immediately escape the Ge family. She really didn’t want to stay here anymore.
A knock came from the door, which startled her.
Shen Wensi had already pushed the door open. The servant outside was already wearing a red old-fashioned coat.
She was holding a tray with a few plates of pastries and two pots of tea on it. A red wedding invitation was pressed underneath.
Seeing Shen Wensi, the servant placed the items down and handed the red invitation to Jiang Huaiyi.
“Young master, the master said that he would like you two to write the congratulatory message for the wedding this evening. When you’re done, just ask someone outside to send it down.”
Saying that, without giving Jiang Huaiyi a chance to speak, she took the dark brown tray and walked out.
Two people stood motionlessly outside the door. Their long figures were imprinted on the paper window.
Just like yesterday, they didn’t give the two of them a chance to leave.
Jiang Huaiyi wondered what her chances of escaping would be if she went out now, but this thought only lasted for a moment.
She quickly sat back down at the table dejectedly and honestly began to write the congratulatory message.
The marriage of the two sides was very particular. This kind of congratulatory message should be written by a respected elder in the family, not by someone like her.
The Ge family probably wanted to give her something to do and also to monitor the two of them at all times.
She really didn’t understand what use they were here. This was the first time she had encountered a main family who would not let people go.
The sun was high in the sky, and the temperature seemed to be warming up a little. She took out the fine silk paper her master had left her and found that another line of words had appeared on it.
“Ge’s residence, be careful at noon and at night.”
Shen Wensi moved closer: “What does it say?”
Jiang Huaiyi said while looking at her phone: “Ge’s residence, be careful at noon and at night. Huh, isn’t it noon right now?”
The time on her phone was almost twelve o’clock, the time of day with the heaviest Yang Qi and also the heaviest Yin Qi.
Shen Wensi suddenly stood up. The hem of her black trench coat swirled.
Jiang Huaiyi subconsciously followed her and stood up. Shen Wensi, who was about to reach the door, suddenly stopped.
“Since Daoist Jiang isn’t afraid, we’d better not be in the same room.”
Jiang Huaiyi clenched her fists and watched the other person slam the door shut.
