Chapter 50.1: In The Amusement Park, Zhu Yunqi’s Fairy Tale Ended.
Tang Yingchi hadn’t mentioned that Zhu Yunqi would be there as well.
By the time Shi Li clearly saw Zhu Yunqi, they were only about ten meters apart. There was no way to pretend she hadn’t seen her and flee in panic.
Their eyes met, and Shi Li froze for a moment before quickly looking away.
She first hugged Tang Yingchi with a smile, then greeted Lan Yang, and finally turned to Zhu Yunqi, saying in a low voice, “I’m sorry, I’ve been really busy lately. There’s a lot going on.”
Zhu Yunqi’s lips moved. “It’s okay. Tang Yingchi said you came to the amusement park for business.”
“Yes, the amusement park wants to launch a batch of companion robots. However, our group has never been solely responsible for designing companion robots for amusement parks, and we don’t plan to set up a new team for it. My boss thinks that our team’s work is similar to that of amusement park companion robots, so they sent me to check out the requirements first.” Shi Li explained in detail.
Zhu Yunqi nodded, disappointed. That shiny silver hairpin also seemed to have become a little dimmer.
The distance between her and Shi Li felt like it was back to how it was when they first met. No, it was even farther than that.
Tang Yingchi and Lan Yang each picked up a little girl, and they were simply inseparable. Tang Yingchi, holding the younger twin, excitedly swayed in front of Shi Li. “Li Bao, hurry up and take a good look. When you have kids in the future, have them look like this. They’re so pretty and so cute. How do you give birth to such a beautiful little girl?”
Shi Li gave a wry smile. “Yingchi, what you’re saying is a bit difficult to achieve…”
Lan Yang threw a bucket of cold water on Tang Yingchi. “First, you need to have Zhu’s family’s genes. Captain Zhu’s sister already has a partner, so she’s a no-go. Captain Zhu doesn’t seem to have any other siblings, so the only marriageable person in the Zhu family is Captain Zhu. And you two are impossible.”
Tang Yingchi kicked Lan Yang. “Nonsense! Of course I know it’s impossible. I’m just kidding, kidding! Besides, I said for Li Bao to have one!”
As soon as she said it, she remembered that Zhu Yunqi’s true identity was that of a Shi Li and Wen Yue shipping fan. She sighed quietly. “Never mind. You two are also impossible.”
Lan Yang hugged the older twin and playfully dodged her.
The older twin was focused on playing with Lan Yang’s blue hair, using all the compliments a four-year-old could think of on Lan Yang.
The younger twin was held by Tang Yingchi for a while. She never forgot her mission to make her aunt smile. Her gaze was always on Zhu Yunqi. Finally, she realized that her aunt was always looking at the pretty aunt who had just arrived, so she reached out her little hand to Shi Li.
“I want this aunt to hold me. Auntie, can you hold me?”
Shi Li couldn’t refuse, of course. She took the little girl from Tang Yingchi. The little girl immediately hugged her face and kissed her cheek. The child was sweet and soft, and her words were sweet. Shi Li was so amused that she couldn’t stop smiling. Tang Yingchi was so jealous that she smacked Shi Li’s butt.
Zhu Yunqi watched them from the side.
The younger twin noticed that her aunt seemed to smile again.
She silently made a note of “2” in her heart. It seemed she was on the right track. The aunt who was holding her wasn’t only fragrant and gentle, but she could also make her aunt happy.
The younger twin suddenly had an idea. She grabbed the fabric on Zhu Yunqi’s shoulder and requested in a milky voice, “Auntie, I want you and this auntie to ride the roller coaster with me.”
Shi Li was startled. It was hard for her to refuse a child, so she could only ask Zhu Yunqi, “Can someone this small ride the roller coaster?”
“Yes, they can.” Tang Yingchi chimed in. “We were just in line. There are family seats with an adult on each side and the child in the middle. The child’s seat is specially made. Let’s ask the older twin if she wants to go.”
The older twin said she wanted to stay with the beautiful blue-haired aunt. They decided that Lan Yang and Tang Yingchi would take the older twin since they were already in line for the roller coaster, and Zhu Yunqi and Shi Li would take the younger one.
The younger twin took out her black diamond SVIP amusement park card, skipping the line. Lan Yang’s eyes widened. “She has a black diamond card at this age? What was the point of Tangtang and me waiting in line?”
The younger twin said softly, “Mom got me and my sister a membership to all the amusement parks in the Federation. She said we shouldn’t waste time waiting in line.”
For a moment, Lan Yang didn’t even want to ride the roller coaster anymore.
Zhu Yunqi and Shi Li sat in the front row family seat with the younger twin. After securing the safety harnesses, Zhu Yunqi turned her head to look at Shi Li’s profile. Shi Li was focused on making sure the younger twin’s safety harness was secure. She tilted her head, her eyelashes fluttering, and her lips slightly pursed. She looked absolutely beautiful.
Zhu Yunqi asked, “Are you scared?”
Shi Li’s hand paused. She then stroked the younger twin’s hair. “No. Are you?”
Zhu Yunqi replied, “Me neither.”
The younger twin took both of their hands, one in each of her little hands, and placed them on her lap. “Auntie, Auntie, but I’m a little scared.”
Shi Li immediately asked, “Should we get off now? We still have time.”
The younger twin closed her eyes. For the sake of less homework, she was ready to face death. “No! I want to ride it!”
The roller coaster started, and the little girl held onto their hands tightly. The child only took up a small space, and her legs were thin. The two adults’ hands were held by her on her lap, and they inevitably touched each other’s fingers.
Feeling the warmth coming from her fingertips, Shi Li was reminded once again of the night at the hotel when Zhu Yunqi held her fingertip in her mouth.
What she felt now was not a thrill, but a surge of bitterness. It was like a planet orbiting a star. It gets closer and closer, reaches the perihelion, and then all that’s left is to move away.
Zhu Yunqi’s fingers moved. Shi Li couldn’t help but flinch and subconsciously wanted to pull her hand away, but the little girl wasn’t happy and wouldn’t feel secure unless she was holding both of their hands.
So Shi Li didn’t move anymore.
When the roller coaster stopped, Shi Li belatedly realized that they were done.
Because the person beside her was Zhu Yunqi, she had no mind to experience the thrill of the roller coaster.
Neither did Zhu Yunqi.
The younger twin got off the roller coaster with wobbly legs. Once she was off, she hugged Shi Li tightly, looking pitiful.
After a while, both twins had to go to the restroom. Tang Yingchi loved them too much, so she volunteered to take them. Lan Yang went to buy drinks, and Zhu Yunqi and Shi Li waited near the restroom.
There was enough space between them for one more person to stand. After finally getting a chance to be alone, Zhu Yunqi tried to build up her courage a few times and finally asked, “Are you doing well lately?”
She had never been afraid of the vast and dark Black Star Belt. She had never been afraid of the ugly and terrifying Zerg. She had never been afraid of the violent and evil space pirates. Her heart was always filled with a desire to conquer.
But when it came to Shi Li, she was afraid again and again.
Afraid of gaining, afraid of losing. Afraid of getting closer, and also afraid of moving away.
If a planet is too close to a star, it will be torn apart by gravity. If it is too far away, it will lose its warmth.
Shi Li lowered her eyes. “I’m doing well.”
Zhu Yunqi’s throat was dry, and her vocal cords were tense. “Shi Li, I might be wrong, but I feel like you’re avoiding me.”
After she said it, she was worried that she had made the problem sound too serious, so she added in a relaxed tone, “Look, you’re not even rejecting Tang Yingchi.”
Shi Li’s heart trembled.
Why did Zhu Yunqi keep trying to see her? Was it really like Wen Yue said, that Zhu Yunqi liked her?
But Zhu Yunqi had also told her not to misunderstand. Besides, they had only known each other for a short time. How could Zhu Yunqi like her? Zhu Yunqi wanting to see her was probably because she didn’t know many people in Z3291. She was one of Zhu Yunqi’s few friends, so Zhu Yunqi wanted to hang out with her.
She had been deliberately avoiding Zhu Yunqi for the past few days, but she couldn’t stop thinking about her. Zhu Yunqi gave her too much warmth, too much brilliance and beauty. So much so that when Shi Li lay in bed at night thinking about it, she felt that the moments she spent with Zhu Yunqi were like a dream. Now that the dream was over and she was back to reality, she didn’t deserve any of that beauty.
Who was she? A bad woman who took money to pretend to love someone else.
Wen Yue had betrayed their relationship. She was now doing the same. All the choices were her own, and she had to bear the consequences herself.
Shi Li reined in her emotions and gave Zhu Yunqi an apologetic smile.
“I’m sorry. I was indeed avoiding you. Because I want to marry Wen Yue, and Wen Yue also said that her engagement with you is basically canceled. I feel like this is my chance again… I know this is something that makes all three of us happy, but I still feel a little sorry for you. After all, when I agreed to your contract, my intentions weren’t pure.”
“Are you saying that when you agreed to the contract, you were thinking that if the engagement was canceled as you wished, you could be with Wen Yue again?”
No. Shi Li silently denied it in her heart.
What she said was half-true and half-false. Her original intention was indeed not just for the money. She also had the dark thought that since Wen Yue valued her engagement with Zhu Yunqi so much, she would get her revenge by making Wen Yue lose what she valued. After Wen Yue lost Zhu Yunqi, she would break up with her, leaving Wen Yue with nothing. This was the best revenge she could think of at the time. She wasn’t holding on to the idea of getting back with Wen Yue.
But circumstances were unpredictable. The situation went on a rampage in an uncontrollable direction. By the time Shi Li realized that she was willing to give up her own freedom for Zhu Yunqi’s freedom, it was already too late.
But she still nodded and agreed with Zhu Yunqi’s conclusion.
“Yes, I just wanted to be with Wen Yue. The reason I broke up with her back then was that I didn’t want to be an intruder in your marriage, not because I didn’t love her. We… we’ve been together since college. I…”
Shi Li bit her lip hard and couldn’t continue. If she kept talking, she was afraid she would expose herself.
“I’m sorry, Zhu Yunqi. I didn’t spend much of the money you gave me, and I don’t know how to spend it. It’s really too much. I’ll give it back to you. Just think of it as… for my initial selfish motives.”
Zhu Yunqi’s eyes were like shattered glass. A gray haze enveloped her pupils, as if it would never be penetrated by sunlight.
She opened her lips slightly, taking small, short breaths.
At the same time, she thought to herself blankly, Why is Shi Li apologizing? She didn’t do anything wrong.
Shi Li completed the contract as required. From beginning to end, Wen Yue was in the wrong. She was greedy and hypocritical, trying to have it both ways. Zhu Yunqi was in the wrong. She was a coward, afraid to cut ties with her family, and used money to shift the conflict onto someone else.
Only Shi Li was not in the wrong.
Shi Li was even honest from the start. Every time she was asked, she admitted her love for Wen Yue.
The reason she was in so much pain right now was that she was getting what she deserved. Her feelings for Shi Li were unrequited. Shi Li had no obligation to reciprocate.
But in the end, the one who apologized was Shi Li.
In the amusement park, Zhu Yunqi’s fairy tale ended.
The short few seconds felt as long as a century.
Zhu Yunqi finally spoke with great difficulty.
“You didn’t do anything wrong, so don’t apologize. As for the money, that was your payment.”
As she spoke, it felt as if there was a hard stone stuck in her throat, making her feel like every word she said was bleeding.
