- Chapter 2 - Master, It Hurts So Much
“Junior Brother, Junior Brother.”
The buzzing in his ears was replaced by anxious cries of “Junior Brother.” It felt as if hundreds of steel needles were piercing his skull. The pain was so intense that Lin Sui was on the verge of cursing out loud.
Out of habit, he reached toward the head of the bed for painkillers, but his hand met only empty air.
“Junior Brother.” That voice lingered by his ear, refusing to go away.
Irritated, Lin Sui rolled over and sat up, but the movement caused the wound on his chest to tear open. Blood seeped out quickly, and his snow-white inner robes were soon stained by a large red patch.
“Little Junior Brother!”
The voice suddenly spiked in volume. Startled, Lin Sui’s hand slipped from the edge of the bed, and he fell straight into a pair of arms that smelled strongly of medicinal herbs.
Instinctive physical repulsion made him struggle to break free immediately. After that flurry of movement, the various wounds on Lin Sui’s body all split open, and the scent of blood began to spread.
“Little Junior Brother! Stop moving. Your wounds have all torn open!” the person holding him said urgently, carefully placing him back onto the bed.
Lin Sui was completely oblivious. He only felt waves of coldness spreading from his heart to his limbs; he felt as if his entire body were submerged in ice water. He curled his body up, sensing that something was not quite right, but the cold and pain were so overwhelming that his mind was currently incapable of thought.
A finger protruding from the quilt was gently tugged, and a boyish voice, aggrieved and bordering on tears, rang out.
“Master, it hurts so much!”
Lin Sui’s heart trembled inexplicably. He hurriedly yanked his finger back and denied it. “I, I am not your Master.”
His mind was a chaotic mess. He did not even know who he was.
“Master.”
The youth reached for his finger again. The moment they touched, an unbearable itch rose in Lin Sui’s throat. He could not help but press his fist against his lips, coughing until the corners of his eyes turned red. As he glanced up slightly, he saw the youth kneeling before the bed, drenched and dripping with bloody water.
A pang of heartache surfaced in his eyes. He spoke subconsciously, “Senior Brother, how could you bully a child?”
The youth’s eyes were bloodshot, filled with an extreme sense of grievance. Lin Sui felt a trace of pity and reached out to pull the youth into a comforting embrace.
The youth kneeling on the ground visibly shuddered. His voice became timid, and he lowered his eyes, not daring to look at him again. Lin Sui’s hand froze in mid-air. The cold inside him was bone-chilling, like an ice hammer violently striking every bone in his body. Even his fingers grew stiff. When he withdrew his hand, his meridians throbbed with a sharp, knife-like pain.
Lin Sui ignored the youth. He wrapped himself entirely in the quilt until only his head was visible, closing his eyes and forcing himself to try and sleep.
Suddenly, a pill was shoved into his mouth. Bitterness exploded across his tongue, and his consciousness, which had been drifting into a daze, snapped awake.
“Eldest Senior Brother! Little Junior Brother finally managed to fall asleep!”
Mo Bai moved to intervene, but the other party was faster, shoving a second pill into Lin Sui’s mouth.
Su Zhanyun let out a cold snort. He reached out and pulled Lin Sui, who was trying to shrink back into the quilt, straight out. His sword-like brows were furrowed as he glared at the frantic Mo Bai, who was trying to grab Lin Sui back.
“Is this not all because you spoil him? Regardless of how big or small the wound is, you just shove painkilling pills into your Junior Brother’s mouth. Have you ever seen a sword cultivator treat painkilling pills like candy? Go out and ask around; is there anyone else who refines pills in so many different flavors?”
The bitterness in Lin Sui’s mouth lingered. He was held upright, and he subconsciously reached out to grab his Eldest Senior Brother’s sleeve, acting spoiled in a soft voice, “Sect Leader Senior Brother, I want to eat candy.”
“Eat, eat, eat! Eat yourself to death!” Even though Su Zhanyun said this, his actions were sincere as he pulled a piece of preserved fruit, carefully wrapped in oil paper, from his robes and tossed it over.
Having received his candy, Lin Sui’s eyes crinkled into a smile. He popped a piece of fruit into his mouth. “Eldest Senior Brother, you are the best.”
Lin Sui ate half the package of preserved fruit before the bitterness finally faded. He slowly began to re-wrap the fruit to hide it under the bed, but a hand reached across and snatched it away. Lin Sui had no strength, so he could only watch helplessly as his candy was taken. He pouted unhappily.
Su Zhanyun’s grim face darkened further. “You are trying to use your poor health as an excuse for your disciple again, are you not?”
Lin Sui’s brain was still in a fog. He had no idea what was happening and only spoke instinctively. “Senior Brother, why do you have such a strong prejudice against my disciple?”
Su Zhanyun looked as if his suspicions were confirmed. He kicked aside the youth who was still kneeling on the ground trying to grab Lin Sui’s finger, and in a fit of rage, he yanked away Lin Sui’s quilt. Golden spiritual energy erupted from his fingertips, circulating through Lin Sui’s body before quickly withdrawing.
Lin Sui was bewildered. “Senior Brother, you…”
Before he could finish, the dense, throbbing pain was instantly magnified. The cold air in his chest surged violently toward the top of his head. A layer of thin ice coated his long eyelashes, and his breath turned to frost.
Mo Bai had not expected Su Zhanyun to use spiritual energy to dissolve the painkilling pills inside Lin Sui. With practiced familiarity, he pulled more pills from his storage bag and fed them to Lin Sui.
After half a bottle of pills, Lin Sui felt like he had finally returned to life. His clothes were soaked with cold sweat, clinging uncomfortably to his skin. With a flick of his will, his body instantly became clean and refreshed, and a faint, crisp, cold fragrance even drifted through the air.
However, the agonizing pain that had barely been suppressed in his meridians exploded inside him like a bomb. A mouthful of fresh blood sprayed out, splashing onto the snow-white quilt like scattered plum blossoms. A sharp ringing pierced his eardrums. Because he had forcibly used spiritual energy, the painkilling pills had lost their effect.
“Lin Suizhi!” Su Zhanyun spat out every word through gritted teeth. His fingertip pressed against the cinnabar mark on Lin Sui’s brow. Golden spiritual energy was continuously funneled into Lin Sui’s body. Su Zhanyun’s energy was nearly exhausted before he managed to barely protect Lin Sui’s frayed and broken meridians.
Mo Bai was on the verge of tears. He tremblingly pulled out a Nine-Revolution Soul-Returning Pill from his storage bag, but Su Zhanyun slapped it away, shouting angrily.
“Can you not see he does not want to live? Why give him that? Just let him die!”
“Eldest Senior Brother! Please, just let Little Junior Brother take it!” Mo Bai’s eyes were red. His Little Junior Brother needed a painkilling pill even for the slightest ache.
Lin Sui leaned limply against the headboard, looking as though he had been fished out of water. Strands of dark hair clung messily to his face, his eyes were full of confusion, and his breathing felt shattered. The cold fragrance in the room grew thick, carrying the dampness of rain.
“Senior Brother, I am uncomfortable.” Lin Sui’s voice was slurred as he pulled at his inner robes with clear disdain.
Su Zhanyun threw a bolt of shimmering golden spiritual energy onto Lin Sui before remembering his primary reason for being there. His gaze turned cold as he walked toward the youth.
Lin Sui’s eyes followed him. The youth curled on the floor was trembling all over. As Su Zhanyun approached, the shaking intensified as if he were terrified.
“Senior Brother, you are scaring him.” Lin Sui rolled out of bed and walked unsteadily to the youth’s side to protect him.
Su Zhanyun was furious, yet he did not dare touch Lin Sui. His sword-like brows knitted into a tight knot. “You are going to protect him like this? He tried to kill you! And you are still protecting him! Did he save your life or something?”
Lin Sui’s mind was truly a mess. He pondered Su Zhanyun’s words for a long time before he understood. The youth behind him wanted to kill him? But why could he not feel any killing intent from the boy? He only felt that the moment he saw this youth, he liked him very much.
Enduring the pain, the youth climbed up from the ground and gently grasped his hand. His bright eyes darted away, and his dark eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings. Lin Sui had no strength left and could only crouch on the floor.
Seeing the blood all over the youth, his vision began to swim. Naturally, he missed the predatory, murderous glint flashing in the depths of the youth’s eyes.
