- Chapter 35 - Eerie Specter (8) Buy Him
Yan Jue’s shoes were completely filthy, but her face was clean and she appeared uninjured. Her expression and demeanor seemed normal; she even grew bold enough to glance at the space beside Yan Yi. However, since Lu Yinshen had not manifested his form, she could only see a patch of empty air.
Tang Can’s face, on the other hand, was covered in grime. She wiped the soot from her face and grinned at Yan Yi with a carefree air. “Little brother Yan Yi, I’ve brought your sister back safe and sound.”
Yan Yi smiled at her and said, “Mm, thank you.”
Turning to Yan Jue, he said, “Sister, you’ve been busy for so long and just got back. Go eat and then get some rest. I’ll look after Mom. As for moving, wait until you wake up to finish that.”
Yan Jue nodded. Her original intention for moving early was to escape the fierce ghost, but now that the ghost did not seem like he intended to harm them, moving a bit later was fine.
She walked over to Zhang Xiu and gestured: Mom, that girl is my friend. Eat and rest well first. We’re going to live in the county seat from now on.
After they finished their noodles, Yan Jue was utterly exhausted and went to sleep.
Tang Can was the same. Although she had good physical stamina, she had been awake for over half the day and had not slept in a long time. She went to Yan Jue’s room to rest. Though there were many empty rooms in the house, there were no extra beds, so Tang Can had to squeeze onto the bed with Yan Jue.
By the time they woke up, it was already afternoon. After lunch and some packing, Yan Jue contacted someone to transport the large items, such as tables, chairs, and cabinets, that had not been moved yet to the county.
Yan Jue borrowed two tricycles: one for transporting Zhang Xiu and the other for the luggage.
Yan Yi pedaled the tricycle carrying Zhang Xiu. To avoid making him too tired, Lu Yinshen did not cling to his back like a permanent attachment. Instead, he drifted behind the tricycle, keeping a close eye on Zhang Xiu.
The mountain roads were rough. If a bump caused Zhang Xiu to accidentally slip, Lu Yinshen’s presence ensured she would not be in any danger.
They worked through several trips until all their belongings were moved.
When the villagers saw them, no one came forward to ask questions. They all wished for this family to get as far away from the village as possible; that was the only way to take away the ghost who had entered a ghost marriage with the Yan boy.
Otherwise, if another person in the village were killed, who knew if it would be them? They only had one life and cherished it dearly.
The apartment Yan Jue rented was in a very old building. The first floor was too damp, so for the sake of Zhang Xiu’s health, she rented a unit on the second floor. The floor space was not as large as their village home, but it was perfectly adequate for their family.
After cleaning the place up, they could finally settle in.
Tang Can had helped a lot, and Zhang Xiu warmly invited her to stay for dinner. She declined, saying she had things to attend to.
Regarding the source of the yin energy, she had spent the previous night scurrying through various spots, but had not found a single lead. She had to continue tonight.
Yan Jue was worried she might get lost and wanted to go with her, but Tang Can firmly refused. She said she had hired a local and told Yan Jue to rest well at home, as running around the village with her would be exhausting and might not even yield useful information.
The previous night, Yan Jue had specifically asked her about Yan Yi. Tang Can said her brother had not been cursed; the reason he could see ghosts was because he was in a ghost marriage, creating a special bond between them.
She added that her brother’s lover possessed thick “merit light.” He must have been a good person in life and was surely a good ghost in death.
Hearing this, Yan Jue was not as afraid of Lu Yinshen anymore.
Vile ghosts deserved to be loathed, but if a good person became a ghost only to be treated that way, it would be too cruel.
As they said their goodbyes, Yan Yi straightened up the small trinkets around the house to make the place more visually pleasing, then set the purchased food containers on the table.
Since they had just moved, there was no time to cook dinner, so he had gone nearby to buy several fast-food meals.
There was a garment factory and a construction site near the building, so the meals were cheap and hearty. The vendors mainly made a profit through high volume.
After eating, Yan Jue gave her mother a massage and her medicine, then said to Yan Yi, “I’m going to work the night shift. You stay home and take good care of Mom.”
She had rented this place specifically because of its proximity to a large garment factory. Being close to home meant no time wasted on commuting, allowing her to sew more clothes and earn more money.
Yan Yi lowered his gaze and nodded silently.
Once Yan Jue left, Yan Yi chatted with his mother for a while before going out to give the neighbor auntie some money, asking her to look after his mother temporarily.
The neighbor, Auntie Zhang, was a warm-hearted woman. She smiled and said she and Zhang Xiu must have shared the same family tree a hundred years ago. She only took one bill from the stack Yan Yi offered and agreed.
When Yan Yi insisted she take more and she refused, he put the money back in his bag. After explaining to his mother why he was going out and when he would be back, he took Lu Yinshen’s hand and walked out the door.
He had a mobile phone, but it could not support the tasks he needed to do. Since they did not have a computer at home, he had to go to an internet cafe. He intended to earn his first “pot of gold” there.
Yan Yi planned to create a small piece of software to sell; it was a quick way to make money in a short time without any risk.
The software was small enough that the internet cafe’s hardware was sufficient. It would not take long to complete.
His slender fingers tapped incessantly on the keyboard as lines of code leapt across the screen. Lu Yinshen sat beside him, watching intently, appearing quite interested.
With a smile in his eyes, Yan Yi leaned close to the ghost’s ear and explained the meaning of each line of code in a low voice.
A man nearby, focused on his gaming, found his rhythm broken by the continuous whispering. His character was killed, and as the bright red “KILL” appeared on his screen, he whipped his head around, wanting to see who was distracting him.
Instead, he saw a handsome youth talking weirdly to thin air, his gaze so tender it looked as if someone were actually there, as if that person were a lover he had been entangled with for several lifetimes.
The man shuddered. The reprimand about to leave his mouth was forced back down.
He thought to himself that it was a mistake to encounter such weird stuff the moment he stepped out at night.
While talking to Lu Yinshen, Yan Yi’s hands never stopped moving.
As he listened, Lu Yinshen lost interest. He hooked a long leg over and sat on Yan Yi’s lap, sitting face-to-face in a clingy manner, his face rubbing against Yan Yi’s shoulder.
Knowing he was bored, Yan Yi felt a pang of affection and gently squeezed the back of his neck.
The man next to them watched with wide eyes. This was truly sinister. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, but no matter how he looked, there was no one beside the youth.
And what was so great about hugging thin air?
The man imitated the gesture, hugging the air himself. After a moment, he felt like a lunatic and slapped himself, telling himself not to get distracted while gaming.
But seriously, what was going on?
Once the software was finished, Yan Yi registered a fake account on a forum and listed it for sale.
Yan Yi did not wait at the internet cafe for someone to buy it; he could not leave the neighbor auntie at his house for too long.
Seeing him leave, the man next to him walked tremblingly over to Yan Yi’s seat and poked his finger through the air. He felt nothing.
So, who was that guy talking to just now? It could not be a haunting, could it?
When Yan Yi returned home, he found Auntie Zhang and Zhang Xiu chatting happily. Auntie Zhang was gesturing animatedly; Zhang Xiu could not hear or speak, and the auntie could not understand her sign language.
Yet, they were somehow having a roaring conversation. The topics jumped from the green onions bought this morning not being fresh, to whose son was a loser, to someone going to the big city and making a fortune.
Yan Yi smiled politely. “Auntie Zhang, thank you. It is late; you should go home and rest.”
Seeing him back, Auntie Zhang stood up, looking like she was not quite done talking. Still, she said, “Oh, it is nothing! We are neighbors after all. Well, Little Yan, I will head back. You have no idea, my old man usually comes back at this hour, and I need to go heat up his dinner.”
After seeing Auntie Zhang off, Yan Yi figured Yan Jue would be getting off work soon, so he went to heat up a meal for her as well.
In the intervals while the food warmed, Yan Yi went online to buy pepper spray, an electric baton, and a personal alarm for Yan Jue.
Although the garment factory was close, one could never be too careful. Carrying these items provided an extra layer of protection to keep her safe.
The food was barely warm when there was a knock at the door. Because it was night, Yan Jue’s voice was not loud: “Yiyi, I am back.”
Upon opening the door, he saw Yan Jue’s joyful expression. She said happily, “I earned over fifty tonight! If I sew more clothes and save up, I can buy a new outfit for you and Mom.”
Yan Yi’s eyes crinkled. “Then thank you in advance, Sister.”
Yan Jue looked beside him with a mysterious air and pulled a red envelope from her bag. “Here, this is a meeting gift for you. I went to the store to change it; it is a brand-new bill.”
Lu Yinshen looked at the red packet in her hand with utter confusion, blinked, and looked at Yan Yi.
Yan Yi smiled at him, signaled for him to take it, and thanked her on his behalf. “Thank you, Sister.”
The red envelope drifted and hovered in mid-air. Yan Jue’s expression was not as fearful as before. Though she still feared ghosts, this was a good ghost with merit light. Most importantly, he was her brother’s lover; she had to accept him so as not to put Yan Yi in a difficult position.
Only, the lifespan of a human and a ghost was so different. What would happen to Yiyi when he grew old?
Yan Jue sighed in her heart but did not let the worry show on her face, maintaining her happy expression.
Yan Yi: “Sister, you must be hungry. The food is on the table. When you are done, just leave the dishes; I will wash them in a bit.”
Yan Jue nodded. “Okay. You go back to your room and rest. It is tiring taking care of Mom all day.”
Yan Yi did not refuse and returned to his room with Lu Yinshen.
The room contained only a chair, a cabinet, and a large bed. It was simple, but very clean and tidy.
Lu Yinshen looked down at the red envelope in his hand with curiosity and doubt, clearly not understanding why Yan Jue had suddenly changed her attitude and given him this.
Yan Yi pulled him into his arms. Because of the height difference, Yan Yi looked even more slender compared to Lu Yinshen.
“This is a red envelope. It represents Sister’s blessing for us. Yinshen, you can open it and see.”
Following his words, Lu Yinshen’s pale fingertips slid open the seal. Inside was a red banknote; just as Yan Jue said, it was very new.
Lu Yinshen did not actually understand what use this money had, but since it was a gift from Yan Yi’s family, he cherished it and tucked it into his sleeve.
Yan Yi ran his fingers through the ghost’s smooth hair, stroking down his spine. He asked with a smile, “Baby, what do you want to buy?”
Seeing Lu Yinshen’s confusion, Yan Yi explained the purpose of money in detail: “It can be used to buy things. As long as you give it to a seller, the item you want belongs entirely to you.”
Yan Yi thought that even if that money was not enough, he would make up the difference for whatever Lu Yinshen wanted.
The red envelope drifted back into Yan Yi’s palm. Lu Yinshen’s dark eyes were deep and stubborn.
“You.”
He wanted to buy him.
