- Chapter 34 - The Ethereal Specter (7) Brother Yan
Yan Yi’s dark, shadowed pupils slowly reflected a figure that now felt increasingly substantial. Although he could see Lu Yinshen even when the ghost did not manifest a physical form, the two states were visually distinct.
A manifested Lu Yinshen appeared more real, drawing the entirety of Yan Yi’s focus.
Yan Jue’s pupils dilated as she stared in disbelief. The contrast between reality and her imagination was so vast that she found herself unable to form an expression. Her mind went blank for a long time.
In her imagination, ghosts were terrifying, nauseating monsters. These creatures had deathly pale faces like white lacquer, long lolling tongues, and horrifying eyes that were nothing but whites, looking as if they had died with a grudge.
Yet the man before her was nothing like what she had envisioned. In fact, he was the polar opposite. Not only was he not hideous, but he was breathtakingly beautiful. It was hard to imagine that a man could be so stunning.
At this moment, Yan Jue even felt that it was perfectly normal for her younger brother to have fallen for this ghost in such a short time. It was not necessarily the result of some sinister spell.
His long hair carried a ghostly chill, and his phoenix eyes slanted slightly upward. His pupils were deep and dark, while the corners of his eyes were rimmed with a damp redness, as if he had just finished crying. His earlobes and the tips of his brows were flushed a vivid crimson. His lips were slightly swollen, though they did not entirely look like they had been kissed into that state.
A hickey was clearly visible next to his Adam’s apple. The rest of his skin was concealed by his crimson robes, making it impossible to see if there were more marks beneath. Yet, she somehow felt certain there were imprints of being cherished.
Despite his delicate and rich beauty, his masculine features were prominent enough that his gender was not blurred. He was an exceptionally handsome male ghost.
But no matter how good-looking he was, he was still a ghost.
Yan Jue was still a bit afraid, but compared to her previous total ignorance of ghosts, her fear had eased slightly. At the very least, she dared to look at him now, though only just.
Tang Can looked at them with an excited expression and whispered to Yan Jue in a low, thrilled voice, “How about it, Big Sister? Is your brother-in-law not super handsome? He and your brother really are a perfect match. You can tell just by looking at them that they care deeply for each other, so do not be afraid of him.”
“There are good people and bad people in this world, so naturally, there are good ghosts and bad ghosts too.”
The night air had cooled, taking the edge off the sweltering summer heat. As Yan Jue listened to Tang Can, her eyes could not help but dart toward Lu Yinshen, snap away, and then look back again, repeating the cycle several times.
She was terrified, yet intensely curious.
Seeing this, Yan Yi generously took the man’s hand and introduced him directly to Yan Jue. “Sister, his name is Lu Yinshen. As you know, he is the person I have married.”
Yan Jue’s shoulders flinched, but she did not want to disrespect her brother or show her resistance toward the ghost. She poked her head out from behind Tang Can, her voice trembling despite her efforts to control it. “He, hello. I am Yi-yi’s sister. My name is Yan Jue.”
Lu Yinshen had not dealt with humans for a long time. Furthermore, except for Yan Yi, he generally disliked speaking to others. However, knowing this woman was Yan Yi’s sister, he looked at her and replied politely, “Hello.”
Hearing this greeting, the tension in Yan Jue’s chest eased further. He could speak, and he knew how to greet people. It seemed he really was not a mindless, evil spirit.
At the very least, he would not suddenly go mad and skin someone alive like the ghost she had seen in that movie.
Tang Can glanced at everyone and said with a smile, “It is getting late. You two should go home and rest. I am going to walk around your village to see exactly what has been happening.”
Yan Jue looked at her hopefully and quickly followed up, “I want to go too. Is that okay?”
She still had questions for the Celestial Master, like whether her brother had been bewitched or if he possessed some special constitution that allowed him to see ghosts.
Yan Jue’s peripheral vision accidentally swept over the man who was currently playing with her brother’s fingers. She immediately averted her gaze. Naturally, there was another reason: she still had a psychological shadow regarding this ghost, even if he was truly handsome.
The scum in the village all deserved to die, and she would not pity those bastards, but their deaths had been far too gruesome. She had personally seen the bodies of a few of them. Even if a small animal died like that, she would be afraid.
This was especially true for those scumbags who looked no different from humans, yet those deaths had been caused by this ghost.
Whenever Yan Jue closed her eyes, she seemed to recall the way they looked when they died: miserable, horrific, with blood flowing everywhere, winding its way to her shoes, impossible to wash away.
Her body shuddered instinctively again, and she lowered her head, looking at the ghost no longer. She still harbored fear toward Lu Yinshen and could not face him calmly yet.
Worried about being rejected, Yan Jue composed herself and looked at Tang Can, immediately listing what she could do to prove her usefulness. “I have a good sense of direction, so I will not get lost. Also, I have lived here since I was a child and know this village very well. You can ask me anything you do not understand.”
Back when they first met and parted, Yan Jue’s eyes had been swollen from crying, and she had not wanted to go home and face her mother like that for fear of worrying her.
She had stood in place, only to watch Tang Can reappear in front of her five times. At the time, she thought the Celestial Master was extraordinary and must have had her reasons for doing so.
It was not until Tang Can awkwardly asked her how to get from this county to the city for an errand that Yan Jue realized she was just lost.
Tang Can had initially wanted to refuse. After all, it was late, and it was not safe for a girl like Yan Jue to follow her through this lawless village. Tang Can had special abilities to protect herself, but Yan Jue was just an ordinary person.
However, Yan Jue’s reasoning was genuinely sound. With her own abysmal sense of direction, if Tang Can wandered around the village all night without investigating anything, it would be a waste. Besides, with her there, she certainly would not let anything happen to Yan Jue.
With that thought, she felt there was no issue letting Yan Jue tag along.
Tang Can laughed brightly and patted her chest in agreement. “Alright, Big Sister, come with me. Don’t worry, I definitely will not let anything happen to you.”
Turning to Yan Yi, she said, “I will be taking your sister now. You two get some rest. Bye-bye.”
Still worried about their mother, Yan Jue instructed Yan Yi, “I will be back early. Remember to check on Mom before you sleep, and if I am not back by eight in the morning, remember to make breakfast for her.”
Yan Yi nodded and said to Yan Jue, “Got it, Sister. Send me a message if anything happens.”
“Okay.”
The two figures disappeared into the night.
Yan Yi first went to check Zhang Xiu’s room. She was lying in bed, her breathing steady, showing no issues. Yan Yi closed the door quietly.
He led Lu Yinshen back to his own room and began tidying the mess on the bed. Previously, worried that certain fluids might harm Lu Yinshen, he had not released them directly, which had resulted in the bedding getting a bit soiled.
He had intended to clean it first thing in the morning, but Yan Jue had barged in worried that he was being bullied by a ghost, and then the female lead had arrived, delaying him until now.
Once finished, Yan Yi felt the fatigue of the late hour. Holding that cool body, he enjoyed a peaceful night’s sleep in the heart of the sweltering summer.
Unlike the wedding villa the village had prepared, their home had no air conditioning. However, Yan Yi did not need a fan to feel cool even in the peak of the summer heat.
Lu Yinshen did not require sleep. Lying in Yan Yi’s arms, he obsessively traced the contours of the man’s face over and over, never tiring of the sight.
Suddenly, fragments of memory flashed through his mind.
“Comrade Lu, the roses in the garden are blooming. Would you be willing to go admire them with me?”
“Shh, Comrade Lu, I should be the one saying sweet words to you.”
“Once things here have settled and become stable, shall we go live in seclusion in the mountains, Brother Yan?”
“Silly, what is so good about the mountains? But our Comrade Lu has a point. Farming and weaving, simple meals, that does sound quite carefree and leisurely.”
“Brother Yan, you are the best.”
The ghost’s eyes were filled with confusion. Lu Yinshen gripped Yan Yi’s fingertips and curled himself even more tightly into Yan Yi’s warm embrace, trying to draw a sense of security from him.
The morning sunlight was clear and as warm as spring, lacking the oppressive heat of the midday sun. It was the perfect time to stay in bed under the covers, yet Yan Yi woke up early.
He woke up as soon as the neighbor’s rooster crowed. Zhang Xiu was in poor health and needed care.
Before getting out of bed, before even fully opening his eyes, Yan Yi’s consciousness cleared, and he instinctively tightened his arms around the person in his embrace to confirm Lu Yinshen’s presence.
Slowly opening his eyes, a soft, gentle smile touched his lips before he had even fully looked up.
“Good morning.”
Lu Yinshen’s eyes were dazed. He did not respond immediately. The memory fragments had tangled in his mind all night, leaving him restless. For the first time, he wanted to know who he had been when he was alive.
And what was the relationship between the Yan Yi he now leaned on and the person in his memories?
Noticing Lu Yinshen was not quite himself, Yan Yi affectionately pressed his face against him, rubbing gently. “What is wrong?”
Lu Yinshen did not speak. He wrapped his arms tightly around Yan Yi’s waist, buried his head in his shoulder, and shook it slightly. “Nothing.”
Indeed, nothing was wrong, and nothing would be. No matter what happened, Yan Yi could only be his. Even if he turned into a ghost, they would remain entangled until their souls dissipated.
Yan Yi gently patted his back, coaxing him.
Once Lu Yinshen felt a bit better, Yan Yi put on his shoes to prepare breakfast.
Although Yan Jue had said to prepare breakfast if she was not back by eight, Yan Yi did not want her to spend all night running around the village only to have to do housework when she returned.
He went into the kitchen to boil three bowls of noodles. With eggs and vegetables added, the nutrition was guaranteed.
Zhang Xiu could eat normal food. She had sensation in the left side of her body. After some training, she was at least able to eat and use a phone with her left hand.
It was just that the family’s situation had been too difficult before. They could barely afford medicine. Physical therapy or surgery were burdens they simply could not carry.
But now that Yan Yi had come to this world, he was determined to change that. Yan Jue’s studies and Zhang Xiu’s health would both gradually improve.
Lu Yinshen watched him work. Driven by curiosity, he wanted to try it himself. Seeing his interest, Yan Yi held his hand and guided him through boiling the noodles.
Soon, three steaming bowls of egg and vegetable noodles were ready. Since Zhang Xiu could not hear, Yan Yi did not knock. He simply carried the bowl inside.
Zhang Xiu slept early and woke early. Seeing him, she beamed with joy and looked behind him, gesturing, “Where is your sister?”
Usually, it was Yan Jue who checked on her. Why had she not seen her daughter this morning?
Yan Yi explained, “Sister has something to do. She is with a friend right now.”
Hearing that Yan Jue was with a friend, Zhang Xiu was even happier. Jue-jue had originally been a bright and lively girl, but due to their family’s circumstances, she had become somewhat withdrawn and had few friends. Meeting a new friend was a good thing.
Yan Yi set the bowl down. “Mom, eat first.”
“Yi-yi, I am back.” It was Yan Jue’s voice.
Sure enough, a moment later, Yan Jue and Tang Can appeared in the room.
