- Chapter 31 - The Ethereal Specter (4) Entering the House
Strands of hair wound in from the hem of his clothes. The fabric he wore was thin, allowing the black hair to enter smoothly and wrap directly around Yan Yi’s lean waist. The red of the ghostly robes contrasted sharply with his white short-sleeved shirt.
Although Yan Yi’s body in this world was frail, his physique was not poor; he possessed visible abdominal muscles and a mermaid line. As the hair tightened around him, it traced the distinct contours of his frame.
The sensation of the black hair wrapping around him sent a chill through Yan Yi, yet a flicker of heat surged within him. Previously, he had his shirt for a layer of protection, but now all concealment was being stripped away.
Yan Yi remained silent and motionless for a long moment.
Lu Yinshen frowned. In truth, he did not understand the specific practical meaning of the word “want.” He only knew that in a picture book he had scavenged from the mountains, whenever the two people in the drawings did something very comfortable, one of them would say that word.
He had said it, so the next step should have been for him to be thrown onto the bed. Why was nothing happening?
His eyes were full of confusion, yet his black hair only tightened its grip on Yan Yi. The long hair moved with agility, pulling off Yan Yi’s short-sleeved shirt to leave his body even more exposed to the cool air. In the drawings, when the two people wanted to be comfortable, these clothes were never there.
The grip around his waist became painfully tight. The skin that Lu Yinshen was not currently touching came into contact with the dry, hot air, while his front felt as if it were embracing a block of ice. These two contradictory sensations made Yan Yi feel extremely uncomfortable. This discomfort had nothing to do with pain.
He struggled to lift his wrist and lightly touched Lu Yinshen, his expression soft and piteous. “Brother-in-law, can you please not bind me? It hurts.”
Compared to passive endurance, Yan Yi preferred to hold the initiative. Being restrained by Lu Yinshen was a pleasant diversion occasionally, just like deliberately calling him “Brother-in-law,” but being perpetually imprisoned and bound was contrary to his nature. He preferred to take the upper hand and watch the other man lose himself in passion because of him. No matter how gentle and kind his outward persona appeared, it was merely an act; he simply enjoyed performing.
The hair on his body did indeed loosen slightly, easing the feeling of constriction, but the hands encircling Yan Yi’s neck did not pull away. Lu Yinshen’s gaze remained dark, wordlessly conveying his desire to be “wanted.”
Outside the window, the summer sun was fierce, but inside the house, ghostly energy dissipated into the air. With their bodies pressed intimately together, Yan Yi tried to lift his wrist again and actually succeeded. He caught a corner of Lu Yinshen’s red robe.
He spoke in a wronged tone, “I also do not know how.”
As a village youth who had little contact with the internet or society, he theoretically should not have known about the affairs of passion. Suddenly, an old illustrated book floated through the air and flipped open to a specific page in front of Yan Yi. It was an erotic manual. The depicted poses were numerous, but the book appeared quite old; the figures were not delicate, and the details were blurred and poorly drawn. It was worlds apart from modern craftsmanship.
It was no wonder that even after looking at it, Lu Yinshen still did not understand how to perform such acts. Yan Yi did not know where he had found it, yet the ghost had cherished it and kept it hidden on his person for so long. He stared silently at the two small figures engaged in intense action on the page.
Lu Yinshen nuzzled against him. His ghostly pupils shimmered, and his eyes burned with a heat more scorching than the sun in the sky. Yan Yi’s hand tightened on the red robe as he locked eyes with Lu Yinshen. Even if a ghost could skip the preliminary steps without getting hurt, it was probably better not to leave any “yang essence” behind. He wondered if he should at least go buy some “little umbrellas” to avoid any accidents.
If he bought them online now, could they be delivered today? Yan Yi pondered for a long time without finding a definite answer.
His throat began to feel inexplicably dry. He crumpled the corner of the robe in his hand and stood on his tiptoes to get closer to Lu Yinshen, pressing his body forward. The floral quilt spread out around them.
Lu Yinshen’s pupils brightened. Was he finally going to “want” him now?
Following the movements in the diagrams Lu Yinshen had shown him, Yan Yi reached his hand behind and exerted force. After a series of movements, sweat broke out on his skin. This frail body would grow tired after walking just a few extra steps, let alone now.
Lu Yinshen looked up at him, his gaze dazed, as if what was happening was different from what he had seen in the book. In reality, Yan Yi had not truly done anything to him. The manual was extremely blurry, and after becoming a ghost, Lu Yinshen’s personality was unexpectedly simple; a few mere gestures were enough to coax him along. Certain human fluids might have an effect on ghosts, and since there was nothing on hand to prevent contact, it was natural to proceed with caution.
Yan Yi caught his breath and hugged the ghost’s waist, acting spoiled. “Brother-in-law, I am so tired.”
Lu Yinshen was indeed fooled. He felt that he was incredibly powerful for having made the other so exhausted so easily. His eyes flickered as he glanced at Yan Yi’s face. The black hair that had climbed over Yan Yi’s body like vines began to retract.
Yan Yi’s waist, abdomen, arms, and nearly all the skin on his upper body were covered in long, red marks. It looked as if he had been severely mistreated. Now that the restraints were gone, Yan Yi leaned against Lu Yinshen’s shoulder, his fingers sinking into the soft flesh, rubbing the skin until it grew warm.
They lay together in a warm embrace for a long time. Once the sky grew dark, Yan Yi held an umbrella and left the luxury villa with Lu Yinshen. Along the way, they encountered many people. Their expressions varied; some felt fear but were also relieved that they were not the ones married to the ghost. Others were gloating, believing that Yan Yi’s entanglement with a specter would surely bring calamity and that his life would be short.
They all kept their mouths shut and did not dare to speak. Even if the Yan boy was truly about to die, he was already involved with a ghost. If they offended him and the ghost retaliated, what would they do? They did not want to gamble with their lives on such uncertainties.
The sky turned completely black. This village was originally named Grave Village, but later someone felt the name was inauspicious and changed it to Feng Village. Someone had come to repair the village roads, and there was now a cement road leading to the county seat, making travel much easier than before. However, there were no streetlights.
Moreover, the paths in other areas were not as easy to navigate. Fortunately, it had not rained lately; otherwise, their legs would be covered in mud. Without lights by the roadside, one had to rely on the naked eye to find the way once it grew dark. Yan Yi’s eyes were special; he could see ghosts, but the darkness still interfered with his vision.
Lu Yinshen floated beside him. As a ghost, the night was his domain. Seeing Yan Yi walking so cautiously, he thought for a moment and then hooked his pinky finger around Yan Yi’s.
Yan Yi’s eyes crinkled as he smiled at him. The smile was gentle and cute, making Lu Yinshen’s heart skip a beat. He felt he wanted to be “wanted” again, but not in the superficial way of this afternoon. He wanted something else.
Confusion flashed in his eyes. What was that “something else”?
Yan Yi took the ghost’s hand in return. To onlookers, it appeared that he was holding his hand up in a strange posture and smiling at the air for no reason. His home was quite far from the villa; they walked for tens of minutes before arriving. Life at home was not particularly miserable; at least there were lights.
He raised his hand and knocked on the door. “Sister, I am back.”
There was essentially no soundproofing in the house, so Yan Jue heard him immediately. She called out, “Yiyi, you are home! There is watermelon on the table that I just bought. Remember to eat some. I have already contacted people to move the large items to the county seat. Pack your luggage tonight; we are leaving tomorrow morning.”
“Okay.”
Yan Jue had only bought a small piece of watermelon, which had been sliced into four pieces and covered with a large iron bowl to keep away flies and mosquitoes. Yan Yi lifted the bowl and took out a slice. The red flesh looked sweet and juicy. He took a bite; it was indeed very sweet. Lu Yinshen would likely enjoy it.
Yan Yi handed it to him. “Try it.”
After becoming a ghost, Lu Yinshen’s sense of taste had been greatly diminished. No matter how sweet a food was, it usually tasted bland in his mouth. He did not refuse, however, and took a bite. He blinked; surprisingly, it had a flavor, and it tasted delicious.
His eyes brightened as he handed the fruit back to Yan Yi. There was a lingering silver light in Yan Yi’s pupils. He smiled at Lu Yinshen and took a bite from the same spot the ghost had eaten, feeling that it tasted even sweeter than before.
Yan Yi did not finish it all, leaving the rest for his sister and mother. He led Lu Yinshen into his mother’s bedroom. Most rural houses were not small; some families even built two-story western-style villas. Their home was not as grand, having only one floor, but it had plenty of rooms.
Upon entering, he saw Yan Jue feeding their mother. Zhang Xiu had a congenital hearing impairment, which also meant she could not speak. She could only make meaningless vocalizations, but her eyes were perfectly fine. Watching her son holding onto thin air while making sounds with his mouth, she gestured to ask what was happening.
She did not know that her son had married a ghost. To keep her from worrying, Yan Jue had kept the truth from her. Zhang Xiu did not even know the village was haunted.
Yan Yi did not want to upset her, but he did not let go of Lu Yinshen’s hand either. He used his other hand to sign to Zhang Xiu. He signaled that his hand was numb and that he could only maintain that posture for now. Zhang Xiu believed him and continued eating the meal her daughter was feeding her.
Yan Jue lowered her head quickly, her hand gripping the spoon turning stiff. Seeing her brother like that, had the ghost followed him home?
Yan Yi went over and said to his sister, “Sister, I have looked into self-study for university. You can sign up. Didn’t you want to study medicine? I can find a way to handle the tuition and living expenses. We can also hire someone to look after Mom. If you are worried, we can check in via video call frequently.”
Yan Jue kept her gaze fixed on one spot, not daring to look around. Hearing Yan Yi’s words, she smiled and said, “I am very happy that you have this thought.”
She pointedly avoided the topic of university. She had researched the registration fees and the cost of the courses herself. If she passed, there would be tuition, living expenses, accommodation fees, and more. Their family could not afford any of that. Furthermore, if she prepared for exams and went to school, she would not be able to earn money. Her mother’s medicine and the family’s daily needs all required funds.
They could not rely solely on her brother to make money. Yiyi had just become an adult and should be enjoying his life. She could not bear the thought of him wasting his years away at work.
Yan Yi knew her concerns, so he did not say more. No matter how much he talked now, he would not be able to change Yan Jue’s mind. It would be better to achieve results first and let her see his earning potential with her own eyes; only then could she set aside those worries.
Yan Yi poured a cup of warm water and handed it to Zhang Xiu, signing: “Mom, you need to drink water when you eat.”
Zhang Xiu accepted it with a smile and pointed toward Yan Jue, signing: “Yiyi, your sister seems to be in a bad mood today. You should comfort her.”
Ever since Yan Jue had come home today, she had looked as if she were carrying a heavy burden. She refused to tell her mother the reason even when asked. Their siblings had a good relationship, so Zhang Xiu thought that if Yiyi talked to her, Juejue’s mood might improve.
Yan Yi felt that his comfort would likely only make things worse. Yan Jue saw this and flashed a wide smile at Zhang Xiu, signing as she spoke, “Mom, I am truly fine. I am in a great mood.”
Lu Yinshen could not understand their sign language and leaned against Yan Yi out of curiosity. Yan Yi scratched his palm. “Do you want to learn?”
Although Zhang Xiu could not hear, she could see her son suddenly hooking his finger at the air and speaking to it. She looked at Yan Jue in confusion: “Juejue, what is wrong with Yiyi?”
Yan Jue’s body stiffened. It seemed that the ghost had truly followed him into the house.
