After My Death, I Became a Heartless Madman - Chapter 7
After leaving the Song residence, Shizhou took a moment to steady herself. Seeing her face turn pale, Song Nianchu, for once, refrained from saying anything harsh.
Shizhou went to the restroom to wash her face, then left without a word.
She still had things to do in the afternoon, who was she putting on this show of sorrow for? Song Shizhou deliberately numbed herself perhaps this was the best way to protect herself.
Just as the car started moving, Zhao suddenly called, saying a certain Miss Lu, who claimed to be her younger sister, had gotten drunk at the city’s largest nightclub and couldn’t make her way back alone.
Xiao Zhao sounded hesitant,
“Should I send someone to pick her up?”
Lu Qi? A nightclub?
Shizhou’s heart skipped a beat.
Lu Qi had always been a model student with excellent grades, how could she end up in a place like a nightclub? Her parents didn’t give her much allowance, so where did she get the money to drink at the most upscale nightclub in the Inner City?
“Wow, Sister Lu, you’re really splurging, taking us to a place like this.”
A girl who looked like a student spoke up, though her mature outfit clashed with her youthful face.
She took a sip of her drink, her expression suggestive.
“Sister Lu, I heard you’re about to study abroad. Didn’t your family oppose it before? Where’d you get the funds?”
“You didn’t, do anything illegal, did you?”
The dazzling lights of the VIP room blurred Lu Qi’s features. Her sharp, striking face twisted into a disdainful smirk, just that simple expression was breathtakingly beautiful.
The girl knew Lu Qi had a temper. Despite being an Omega, she fought ruthlessly and fiercely, even overpowering most Alphas. How dare she provoke Lu Qi so carelessly? Seeing Lu Qi hadn’t lashed out yet, she quickly shut her mouth with a sheepish grin.
Lu Qi had already drunk quite a bit today, but she intended to keep going. She cracked open another bottle of imported liquor, the table was already littered with expensive bottles, nearly ten of them costing ten thousand each.
“What nonsense! Haven’t you heard? Lu Qi’s cousin that woman who visited us before, what was her name, Shizhou.”
“She’s climbed her way up to someone powerful.”
“Someone powerful?”
Most of Lu Qi’s friends were like her lucky enough to move into the Inner City but clueless about the upper echelons. One bold girl couldn’t resist asking.
Lu Qi fell silent for a moment.
“She’s not my cousin.”
“She’s my real sister.”
The others quickly chimed in,
“Ohhh, so she’s your real sister! Sister Lu, your sister is really pretty, haha.”
Lu Qi smiled faintly, then spoke slowly, each word seemingly soaked in venom before leaving her lips.
“Isn’t it common knowledge in the Inner City that she’s entangled with Bai Ruowei?”
The bombshell statement instantly froze the room. The sheer weight of the revelation left everyone speechless.
“Say something! Why aren’t you talking?!”
The resentful venom twisted Lu Qi’s expression, her stunning face turning terrifying. A soft knock sounded at the door, soon cracking it open slightly.
Lu Qi couldn’t hear what the attendant said, but she caught the words “your sister.”
Lu Qi wanted to drink a little more when she was suddenly yanked up with great force, immediately meeting a pair of furious eyes.
Those eyes often looked at her gently, full of affection and kindness, but now they were brimming with anger, disappointment, and a host of other negative emotions.
Lu Qi remained motionless for a long moment before finally breaking into an extraordinarily beautiful smile.
She lightly touched Shizhou’s face,
“Shizhou, you came?”
The distance from the nightclub to the underground parking lot wasn’t far. Though it wasn’t even winter yet, snow had begun to fall in the Inner City. Lu Qi followed behind Song Shizhou, stepping on her footprints as if compelled by obsession.
Just like when they were children, when she could only survive by following closely in Song Shizhou’s footsteps.
Song Shizhou opened the car door,
“You’ve had too much to drink. I’ll take you home.”
Lu Qi stared at her face for a long moment before laughing,
“What are you pretending for?”
Song Shizhou didn’t respond.
The next second, she grabbed Lu Qi by the collar and shoved her against the car window, the girl’s slender frame staggering from the force.
“Lu Qi, have you lost your mind?”
Lu Qi met her gaze, enunciating each word deliberately,
“I. Lost. It. Long. Ago.”
“I lost it the day you left the Lu family, Song Shizhou. Why don’t you just die? How dare you not die?”
Song Shizhou gripped her throat,
“What are you saying? Do you even know what you’re saying?!”
“I do!”
“We grew up together. Why were you the one taken back to the Song family, living a life I could never have? We were both Lu family children, why didn’t you have to endure that abusive couple? Why did you get to leave first?”
Tears streamed down Lu Qi’s palms,
“What are you pretending for? What’s the point of this act?”
Song Shizhou clenched her shoulders tightly, “I was switched at birth. I wasn’t a Lu family child, don’t you understand? I wasn’t a Lu family child!”
“So what?”
“Haven’t you always been one to fawn on the powerful? What is Song Fengyu to you? She stole everything from you, don’t you hate her? Shouldn’t you hate her? Why did you celebrate her birthday? You knew no one but you would remember mine. Why didn’t you come? Why didn’t you come?!” Lu Qi sobbed uncontrollably,
“Elder sister, I hate you so much,”
“You’re the person I hate most in this world. Why did you save me? Why did you protect me? Why did you help me?”
Why did you abandon me again?
Song Shizhou shut her eyes tightly,
“Fine,”
She never expected her kindness to be repaid with such vicious betrayal. Shizhou closed her eyes, she had no tears, only her thin lips bitten until they bled, the taste of iron spreading in her mouth.
“Go ahead and hate me. From now on, do whatever you want. I won’t interfere with you anymore.”
Lu Qi wept hysterically. The snow fell heavier now, dusting both their clothes and hair with white. Song Shizhou struggled free from Lu Qi’s embrace, but the girl clung desperately to her legs,
“No, elder sister, I’m begging you just kill me, okay? Kill me. I don’t want your money, I don’t want to go abroad anymore. Please, just come back to me like before. I’ll do anything you want, anything at all.”
“Do you know how I’ve endured every single minute and second you’ve been gone all these years? Do you know how much pain I’ve been in? Song Shizhou, can’t you see that I—”
The remaining half of the sentence didn’t need to be spoken, it was obvious.
“Can’t you see? Don’t you know?”
“Lu Qi!”
Song Shizhou’s eyes were bloodshot.
“Shut up.”
She didn’t know how she’d gotten entangled with these lunatics. Song Shizhou struggled to move her legs through the snow, but the girl’s strength was terrifying. Lu Qi clung to her legs, refusing to let go.
“Let go of me!”
“I said let go!!!”
She didn’t want to be locked in this standoff with Lu Qi in the snow. The scandalous rumors surrounding her were already plentiful. But Lu Qi suddenly laughed, and Song Shizhou instinctively turned to look at her. She saw Shizhou’s jet-black hair dampened by the snow just like her own. Lu Qi thought hazily that it was as if they’d grown old together.
She saw Song Shizhou’s face, made even more strikingly beautiful and vivid by anger. She was furious, and her gaze was fixed on her again, even if it was fury directed at her.
But at least it was fury for her.
Clutching Song Shizhou’s pant leg, Lu Qi smiled, radiant yet disheveled.
“Are you going to find Bai Ruowei?” Lu Qi slowly rose from the snow.
“You don’t know yet, do you, Song Shizhou?”
“Bai Ruowei didn’t go to the Thirteenth District to suppress unrest she went for an official reassignment. She’s getting married.”
“What?”
“She. Is. Getting. Married.”
“To Miss Zhao from the Third District. Miss Zhao also works at the Surveillance Institute and is only twenty-one this year, four years younger than you. Her family background is a passable match for Bai Ruowei’s. They got engaged yesterday, and the wedding is scheduled for next month.”
“Logically, as a daughter of the Song family, you should’ve heard this news before me. Sister, don’t tell me you hadn’t caught even a whisper of it?”
“Because Bai Ruowei didn’t want you to know.”
“If she didn’t want you to know, she had countless ways to keep it from you. Why would Miss Bai do that? Couldn’t you just part on good terms?”
Lu Qi answered her own question.
“Maybe she thought you weren’t worthy.”
“Shizhou, you’re so pitiful.”
Lu Qi’s smile was breathtaking.
“You’re so pitiful. In this world, no one truly cares about you.”
Song Shizhou truly hadn’t known.
But she couldn’t take Lu Qi’s words at face value. Song Shizhou comforted herself, she’d always had this talent: the crazier others acted, the calmer she became. She couldn’t lose her composure now. She had to stay calm, only then could she find a solution. Song Shizhou took a deep breath.
She and Bai Ruowei were the ones in a relationship. She shouldn’t shouldn’t dismiss Bai Ruowei because of Lu Qi’s words. She had to ask her directly.
Her hands trembled as she dialed the number. The phone rang three times, and for a moment, she thought it had connected, only for it to be abruptly hung up.
The car’s heater wasn’t on, and Song Shizhou shivered from the cold, her fingers stiff and clumsy. In her confusion, she accidentally tapped something, and her phone automatically opened a spam webpage. She frantically exited, returning to the home screen.
A video began playing automatically.
“The unrest was just a cover. Miss Bai actually went to the Thirteenth District for reassignment, to catch everyone off guard.”
“Supervisor Bai is about to celebrate a joyous occasion. Not only has this debriefing propelled her career to new heights, but she’s also won herself a beauty in the realm of love.”
The photo of the two smiling at each other was posted. Song Shizhou lightly tapped Bai Ruowei’s face in the picture, what a perfectly matched pair. Even ordinary evening gowns looked as harmonious as wedding dresses on them. Where would their wedding be held? No matter the location, it was bound to be a grand spectacle, drawing crowds and receiving blessings from everyone.
How could she lie to me?
Song Shizhou fought back tears.
How could she lie to me?
Even if she no longer liked me, grew tired of me, or even despised me, just saying it outright would have been enough. She knew I wasn’t the type to cling stubbornly.
Did seeing me so heartbroken bring her joy?
When you reach a dead end, you should turn back in time.
Song Shizhou wiped away her tears.
Whether it was Bai Ruowei, the Song family, or the Lu family, she wanted no part in any of their affairs anymore. She was only twenty-five this year. Her life had just begun. She was a postgraduate from a prestigious university with a bright future ahead.
She would leave, the farther, the better. She wouldn’t return to the Inner City, wouldn’t be an eyesore to those high-and-mighty figures.
With that thought, she turned on her hazard lights and prepared to make a U-turn.
A hundred meters away, a fully loaded truck, rushing to make its delivery, had its accelerator floored by the driver.
There was no time to react.
