After My Death, I Became a Heartless Madman - Chapter 4
The moment Song Fengyu finished speaking, Song Shizhou’s heart trembled violently.
“Fengyu, it’s late at night.”
“Let’s go upstairs if you have something to say.”
The house’s passcode hadn’t been changed it was still Bai Ruowei’s birthday. Song Fengyu watched her input the numbers, then let out a cold laugh upon seeing them.
“How thoughtful of you.”
Fengyu’s lips curled mockingly.
But what was the use of being thoughtful? She followed Song Shizhou into the room, her unremoved shoes leaving glaring wet marks on the floor.
Who couldn’t see that between Song Shizhou and Bai Ruowei, it was nothing more than Song Shizhou’s one-sided devotion?
Song Fengyu glanced around.
“Seems like nothing has changed since the last time I was here.”
This small apartment was a coming-of-age gift from the Song family to Song Shizhou. A little over a hundred square meters, almost shabby for a wealthy family like theirs. Fengyu rarely visited. The last time she had come was the day Shizhou moved in, when she helped arrange the furniture.
She reached out and touched the cheap furniture that hadn’t been replaced in years.
“To think Miss Bai could endure living in such conditions.”
“I thought after moving in with Bai Ruowei, you’d at least gain some financial benefits. But it seems, Shizhou, she doesn’t love you as much as you claimed.”
“But feelings can’t be measured by money. Our relationship isn’t what you think.”
“What kind of relationship, then?”
Song Fengyu’s voice suddenly turned sharp.
“Do you know how wealthy Bai Ruowei is? Do you know what she was raised on, what kind of environment she grew up in? Half the Inner City belongs to Bai Ruowei!”
Song Fengyu sneered.
“Do you really think Bai the Inspector would willingly squeeze into a tiny apartment with someone she loves, relying on her partner’s measly monthly income to support herself?!”
Song Shizhou knew Miss Bai didn’t lack money. She also knew Bai was generous with her subordinates. But Miss Bai never brought up finances with her, and Shizhou found it awkward to mention, so she covered most of their expenses.
It wasn’t so bad, really. After all, Miss Bai was living with her now…
As if realizing her own agitation, Fengyu tried to calm down.
“Shizhou, let’s not talk about this for now. Answer my earlier question.”
“Are you prepared to leave Bai Ruowei?”
Song Shizhou hesitated.
“I… haven’t made up my mind yet.”
Song Fengyu’s expression darkened. “You don’t want to leave her?”
“Do you know what people are saying out there? You’re an Alpha, Bai Ruowei is an Alpha, she can’t marry you, and she certainly won’t be marrying into your family. What do you think you’re doing, hanging around her like this? Do you know how vicious the rumors are? They say—”
No one besides the two of them and Mia knew Bai Ruowei had become an Omega. Song Shizhou didn’t know how to explain it to Fengyu. Not that she needed to, Fengyu had already fallen silent. Someone as well-mannered as her could never bring herself to voice the rest.
“They say I’m her lover, a disposable plaything. Fengyu, I know all of it.”
Song Fengyu’s face twisted.
“Are you really this shameless?!”
It was the first time in her life Fengyu had ever cursed at her.
Fengyu had always been so good to her.
If Lu Qi’s plight was one of both emotional and material neglect, Song Shizhou’s circumstances were far better than hers by leaps and bounds. Though she had long been the invisible member of the Song family, her standard of living had undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. She entered an international high school, attended various high-society banquets experiences entirely foreign to Shizhou, who found herself at a loss, unable to adapt or cope.
It was Fengyu who stayed up late teaching her English pronunciation, only to deliver her own speech the next day with dark circles under her eyes. It was Fengyu who taught her twelve different ways to tie a necktie, delaying her own makeup time in the process. And when Song Nianchu bullied her, it was Fengyu who let her hide in her study,
Song Fengyu’s study, a forbidden place to the entire family.
No one could hate such a fairy-like elder sister. Perhaps Shizhou had once resented Fengyu, but not anymore. If Fengyu was an immortal from the Jade Pool, then Shizhou was nothing but the humblest weed by its banks. When a celestial being extends her hand in greeting, how could you refuse her kindness?
Song Fengyu bit her lip, struggling to keep her voice as gentle as ever.
“Shizhou, don’t be angry anymore. I know you resent Mom and Dad for treating you poorly, and you hate me even more, hate me for failing in my duty as your sister.”
Her face flushed slightly, as if hinting at something.
“I… apologize to you.”
When had Fengyu ever bowed her head? Even in front of Bai Ruowei, she had always carried herself with unyielding dignity.
“If you’re willing to come back, we can talk about anything. I’m begging you. Even if Mom and Dad disagree, I’ll take you away from Bai Ruowei. We’ll find a place where it’s just the two of us. Don’t you like living with your sister Fengyu? Wasn’t that your childhood dream?”
Fengyu’s tone softened, but the gentler her words, the more bitterness swelled in Shizhou’s heart.
“No, Fengyu.”
She had recklessly provoked Bai Ruowei, and the consequences of betrayal were beyond her ability to bear. Even if she could steel herself to leave, what about the innocent people involved? She knew all too well Bai Ruowei’s methods and temper, would she spare the Song family? Would she spare Fengyu?
“Fengyu, just think of me as shameless. I have no choice. I’ve already fallen in love with Miss Bai.”
The moment the words left her mouth, an eerie silence filled the room.
Song Shizhou knew how deeply this would disappoint Fengyu. She didn’t dare look at her, keeping her head bowed as she clenched a tea bag so tightly her fingers turned white.
“You’re lying.”
Song Fengyu laughed brightly.
“Shizhou, did you really think I wouldn’t find out just because you didn’t say anything?”
Shizhou froze.
“You grew up with the Lu family, and the Lu family couple never treated you well. There was a woman a few years older than you in your neighborhood, you called her ‘sister,’ and you adored her.”
“You’ve always been shy and reserved, unwilling to put yourself forward in grand settings. The banquet welcoming Bai Ruowei was the first time you ever met her. Song Shizhou, where did you find the courage no, the audacity to confess to Bai Ruowei?”
“The reason you threw yourself at her so recklessly wasn’t just because you drank a glass of strong liquor. It was because Bai Ruowei bears a slight resemblance to that woman from your past. Song Shizhou, you’re just projecting your feelings onto a substitute. Don’t you find it disgusting, declaring love to a stand-in?”
“I’m not!”
There was a click from outside the door, like something being crushed, but the two immersed in their emotions didn’t notice.
“What’s between Bai Ruowei and me isn’t something you’d understand. It’s too complicated to explain. But one thing’s certain, Fengyu, I know exactly who I love.”
“I don’t understand?”
“What, so eager to draw lines between us now?”
“From childhood till now, which of your affairs haven’t I handled? Which ones don’t I understand? Which could possibly be unknown to me?”
She took several urgent steps forward. When had Fengyu ever been this agitated? She was always composed, always effortlessly detached. Song Shizhou retreated under the pressure as the familiar scent of wood ash enveloped her a silent fragrance. Though it was clearly an Alpha’s pheromones, Shizhou detected something ambiguous in it.
“You’re just emotionally overwhelmed, blinded by bad influences, unable to distinguish right from wrong.”
Suddenly, the door swung open. Bai Ruowei entered, taking in the stunned expressions of the two.
Her gaze swept across the room, pure disdain when it landed on Song Fengyu, but trembling slightly when facing Song Shizhou. Bai Ruowei thought to herself: She said she loves me.
She paused.
Of course she should love me.
Her snow-white hair proclaimed her noble status, the ends casually resting against her immaculate black suit. Those jewel-like pale green eyes and the faint but innate aura of dominance made Shizhou’s heart race. Bai Ruowei, the unattainable Bai Ruowei. To speak of love with someone like her…
Perhaps it could only be a joke.
“Miss Lu.”
The frozen atmosphere shattered under Bai Ruowei’s cold voice.
“This is my home, not a place you should be.”
Few knew of the discord between the Song and Lu families, but before Miss Bai, the Inner City held no secrets.
Song Fengyu’s face darkened.
“Miss Bai needn’t bring that up. If Shizhou wants to reclaim what’s hers, I’ll return everything anytime.”
“Don’t shift the pressure onto Song Shizhou. What kind of person she is Miss Lu understands better than anyone.” Bai Ruowei’s tone was mild.
“If you’re truly resolved, simply refrain from appearing as the Song heir at the next chamber meeting.”
Song Fengyu met her gaze squarely.
“This is family business between Shizhou and me. What right does Miss Bai have to interfere?”
In the entire Inner City, perhaps only Song Fengyu dared confront Bai Ruowei so directly.
“I did come uninvited today, but some matters must be clarified.”
“Clarified?” Bai Ruowei’s eyes turned sharp.
“What qualifications do you have to clarify anything with me?”
Only a trump card could sit at the table with the ace. Though Song Fengyu was indeed the Inner City’s rising star, even the most valuable newcomer meant little to the master player.
Fengyu choked, “I—”
“Fine. For Shizhou’s sake, I’ll grant you this chance. But didn’t you already get your answer earlier?”
Bai Ruowei arched a brow, looking at Song Shizhou.
Being scrutinized by such an oppressive gaze was no easy matter. Shizhou’s feet seemed frozen, she didn’t want to move, yet she had to.
Because Bai Ruowei was waiting for her stance.
Amidst the silence, Song Fengyu held his breath nervously, while Miss Bai maintained an outwardly calm and composed demeanor.
It took a long while before Song Shizhou slowly moved closer. She stood beside Bai Ruowei, closed her eyes, and like entwined swans, pressed a kiss upon Bai Ruowei’s slender neck.
Bai Ruowei let out a cold laugh, her eyes filled with mockery.
