After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 70
The morning passed quickly, and lunchtime arrived as scheduled. When she heard the faint commotion outside, Ye Wenjin belatedly checked the time and realized it was already noon.
She let out a deep sigh of relief.
Although she hadn’t accomplished anything all morning, her mind felt like it had suddenly relaxed after being tightly wound. Only then did Wenjin realize she had been unconsciously tense the entire time—had it not been for lunch break, she might not have noticed at all.
Housekeeper Wu arrived punctually, set down the lunchbox, and tactfully left.
Wenjin eagerly opened the container, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the delicious dishes. With nearly a month left before she needed to report to the dance troupe, she could afford to indulge just a little.
Seeing Wenjin’s completely different demeanor, Jian Mo couldn’t help but laugh. “A-Jin, why were you so nervous earlier?”
Wenjin smiled awkwardly. “I wasn’t that nervous at first, but… then I noticed everyone working so diligently, and the people coming to see you were all so serious and focused. I just… felt a bit out of place.”
Jian Mo chuckled helplessly but didn’t suggest she go home, only saying softly, “It’s alright. You’ll get used to it in a couple of days.”
Wenjin didn’t find anything amiss either and even nodded earnestly. “Don’t worry, sis, I’ll definitely adjust!”
Jian Mo lowered her eyes with a quiet laugh.
After lunch, Wenjin suddenly received a message from Chu Yunsheng. It turned out they had returned a day early—everyone was worried about Jian Mo, so they wanted to check in with Wenjin.
Wenjin felt a warmth in her heart and reassured them, keeping it brief by simply stating that Jian Mo was doing much better now.
Yunsheng was relieved, and after discussing with the other two, they immediately proposed meeting up. Their long-awaited trip had been cut short unexpectedly, and now that they were back, it was the perfect opportunity to reunite.
Wenjin hesitated before turning to Jian Mo. After some deliberation, she asked, “Sis, Yunsheng and the others are back and want to have dinner with us… Of course, if it’s inconvenient, we don’t have to go.”
Jian Mo smiled. “A-Jin, I haven’t even said anything yet. Why are you already backing out?”
Wenjin scratched her cheek sheepishly. “Because you’re not in the best condition right now. If you’re forcing yourself just for my sake, I’d feel guilty.”
Hearing this, Jian Mo’s smile widened. “It’s not forcing anything, A-Jin. We’re wives—shouldn’t we understand each other? Just like how you’ve accompanied me to work without complaint. I can tell you want to meet your friends, so of course I won’t stop you.”
Wenjin’s heart warmed. “I understand, sis. How about we meet after work today? Since Yunsheng and the others came back early, they’ll probably need to head home soon after this.”
Originally, Rong Yunshu and the others were supposed to return home right after the trip. But because they were worried about Jian Mo, they had come back. Wenjin didn’t want to dampen their spirits, especially since she and Jian Mo had left early—even if it was due to unavoidable circumstances, it had still been disappointing.
So it was only right to have a meal together.
Jian Mo naturally had no objections and nodded, saying, “Sure, I’ll make the arrangements.”
After speaking, she seemed to remember something and paused before adding slowly, “If A-Jin feels bored, you can have them all come over. There’s a small reception room next door—perfect for chatting.”
Ye Wenjin’s eyes lit up, but she quickly reined in her emotions. “But… wouldn’t that be a bit inappropriate?”
Jian Mo smiled. “There’s nothing inappropriate about it. Don’t worry, A-Jin.”
Ye Wenjin was still hesitating when Jian Mo took her phone and dialed Chu Yunsheng’s number.
At first, Chu Yunsheng thought it was Ye Wenjin calling and answered carefreely. Only upon hearing the voice did she belatedly realize it wasn’t one she recognized. Nervous, she was about to ask who was on the other end when it suddenly struck her as oddly familiar.
After a brief pause, Chu Yunsheng tentatively asked, “Sister Jian?”
Jian Mo hummed in acknowledgment. “I’ll handle the arrangements for the meal. You all come over first.”
Chu Yunsheng nodded meekly, instinctively agreeing, only to realize after hanging up that Jian Mo hadn’t actually told her where to go.
Just as the confusion set in, she received an address.
Chu Yunsheng stared at the address and fell silent.
She handed the phone to Zhou Wuhua. “This address seems… kind of familiar?”
Zhou Wuhua adjusted her glasses. “Does it?”
Everything felt unfamiliar to her—or rather, aside from the area around their school, the entire city was unfamiliar.
Chu Yunsheng suddenly remembered something and realized she’d asked the wrong person. She turned to Rong Yunshu beside her. “Rong Yunshu, look at this. Doesn’t it seem familiar?”
Rong Yunshu glanced at it and raised an eyebrow. “It does.”
The two exchanged a look, though neither was entirely sure.
It wasn’t until the three of them arrived at the location and saw the prominent logo on the twin towers that it finally clicked.
“Oh, it’s Sister Jian’s building.”
Chu Yunsheng was dumbfounded.
“Wait, why are we at the Jian Corporation building?”
Rong Yunshu murmured, “Is it possible… that Wenjin is here too?”
Chu Yunsheng: “?”
Wow, seriously? This is awesome!
“Oh my god, Wenjin is… haha! The CEO’s wife? The chairwoman’s wife?”
Zhou Wuhua: “…”
Rong Yunshu: “…”
Both fell into silence.
The three stood in front of the building, staring at the entrance without moving, until Rong Yunshu’s phone suddenly pinged.
[Yunshu, come on up.]
Rong Yunshu froze.
Seeing her reaction, Chu Yunsheng pulled Zhou Wuhua over, and the three of them huddled together to look—only to freeze in unison.
“How… does Wenjin know? Can she see us right now?”
The three: “…”
“Alright, let’s just go up.”
Rong Yunshu was the first to speak up.
Chu Yunsheng nodded, pulling the stiffened Zhou Wuhua along as the three slowly entered the building.
Contrary to their expectations—where they’d imagined being interrogated by the front desk, barred from entering, only for Ye Wenjin and Jian Mo to swoop in and humiliate the staff—none of that happened.
The receptionist had long been notified about three special guests. Upon seeing them and confirming their names, she promptly escorted them to the elevator.
Even as the elevator reached their floor, the three were still somewhat dazed.
Chu Yunsheng suddenly sighed with emotion, “Ah—why don’t we ever get those face-slapping plotlines, huh?”
Zhou Wuhua: “…”
Rong Yunshu scoffed coldly, “Is it possible that kind of plot isn’t popular anymore? Besides, this is Jian Corporation—such a big company. The employees probably wouldn’t make such low-level mistakes, right?”
Chu Yunsheng glared at her. “Rong Yunshu, why do you always have to contradict me? I was just musing out loud.”
Seeing the two about to start arguing, Zhou Wuhua quickly interjected, “Alright, alright, we’re here. Let’s all calm down a little.”
The elevator doors opened, and the three of them looked up to see a smiling secretary standing before them.
Led by the secretary, they finally arrived at their ultimate destination.
The moment they saw Ye Wenjin, all three of them let out a collective sigh of relief.
One glance at their expressions told Ye Wenjin everything—their nervousness had mirrored her own when she first arrived. All her tension instantly melted away.
Seeing that everyone else was just as uncomfortable put her at ease.
