After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love - Chapter 69
Jian Mo gazed at her for a long moment before suddenly sighing. The smile at the corners of her lips softened as she reached out to gently stroke the top of her head. “Ah Jin, I’m actually not as good as you think I am. If one day I turn out to be completely different from the image you have of me, you’d probably… be afraid of me. After all, you’ve always been quite timid.”
Ye Wenjin froze for a second. Her first reaction upon hearing these words was confusion.
Almost immediately, she sensed something off about what Jian Mo had said. In truth, she had felt a few fleeting moments of strangeness before, but she’d never had the chance to dwell on them.
The way Jian Mo made her feel was as if they had known each other long before.
But she remembered clearly—their first meeting should have been that accidental encounter. If that wasn’t their first meeting, then when had it been?
After a brief hesitation, Ye Wenjin decided to ask directly, “Sister… have we met before?”
Jian Mo’s eyes darkened for an instant, and she remained silent for a long time.
As the silence stretched on, Ye Wenjin grew increasingly uneasy.
Her thoughts became unusually active, her mind racing as she desperately tried to recall any forgotten fragments of the past.
In that short span of time, Ye Wenjin considered many possibilities before arriving at a terrifying conclusion.
Was it because she had forgotten their true first meeting that Jian Mo wasn’t speaking?
Was Sister… upset that she’d forgotten? Was she angry?
The more she dwelled on it, the more unsettled she became. She racked her brain, trying to remember if she had overlooked something, yet no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t grasp the crucial memory.
Swallowing hard, she quickly lowered her head and apologized, “I’m sorry, Sister. It seems I’ve forgotten.”
The room was silent. Jian Mo still didn’t speak, and Ye Wenjin, too afraid to look up, grew even more anxious.
Just as she was beginning to feel truly awful about herself, Jian Mo suddenly laughed.
Ye Wenjin instinctively lifted her head and saw the amusement in Jian Mo’s eyes.
“Sister?”
Ye Wenjin murmured in confusion.
Finally, Jian Mo spoke. “Seeing Ah Jin so flustered makes me happy.”
Ye Wenjin blinked. “Sister isn’t angry?”
Jian Mo shook her head. “Of course not. But Ah Jin, I can tell you this—that night at the banquet wasn’t actually our first meeting.”
Ye Wenjin was stunned. Her emotions were like a rollercoaster, soaring and plummeting in a way that left her utterly disoriented.
At first, she had thought it was her own forgetfulness, but Jian Mo’s reaction made it seem like she was teasing her. Now, however, she was being told that it truly hadn’t been their first encounter.
Ye Wenjin was completely dumbfounded.
“Not our first meeting? Then… when was it?”
She stared blankly at Jian Mo. “Sister, have we… really met before?”
Jian Mo nodded slowly, smiling. “We have. But… Ah Jin, you’ll have to remember it yourself.”
Ye Wenjin nodded dazedly, still struggling to process the revelation.
The news was far too shocking. She would never have imagined that she and Jian Mo had met before—so why couldn’t she recall it at all?
Frowning deeply, Ye Wenjin wracked her brain but still couldn’t remember. Gradually, her expression turned vacant with bewilderment.
Jian Mo found it amusing. “Ajin, there’s no need to rush. Take your time to think.”
Ye Wenjin nodded blankly, still troubled.
Unable to recall anything after racking her brain, Ye Wenjin finally gave up for the moment, her expression downcast.
But she quickly perked up, took a deep breath, and made a solemn promise with a serious face. “Sister, don’t worry. I will definitely remember!”
Jian Mo smiled faintly, her lips pressed together. “Alright, I believe you, Ajin.”
Hearing this, Ye Wenjin’s heart tightened instantly.
What if she still couldn’t remember when the time came?
She began to grow anxious without realizing it, unconsciously biting her lip.
Noticing her distress, Jian Mo suddenly said, “Ajin, before you report to the dance troupe, come to work with me, okay?”
Ye Wenjin nodded instinctively without even hearing the specifics. “Okay.”
Jian Mo blinked, her eyes brimming with laughter.
Only after snapping back to reality did Ye Wenjin pause, hesitating. “I… go to work with you?”
Jian Mo smiled softly and said gently, “Yes, because I don’t want you to be too far from me. Unless… you don’t want to?”
Ye Wenjin hurriedly shook her head. “Of course I want to!”
She was just a little surprised, but then it occurred to her that Jian Mo’s pheromones were extremely unstable right now, so it made sense for her to stay close.
At this thought, Ye Wenjin’s heart ached again.
“Sister, I’m sorry…”
Jian Mo ruffled her hair. “What are you apologizing for? It was my own oversight. Besides, Ajin, don’t feel guilty for mistakes that aren’t yours. The ones who should apologize are those with impure intentions.”
Ye Wenjin hugged her, burying her face in Jian Mo’s neck and giving it a light peck. “Sister, you’re really too good.”
Jian Mo hummed softly in response. “Ajin is good too.”
Ye Wenjin didn’t say anything, because she felt she was truly ordinary. In contrast, someone as dazzling as her sister choosing her was something she still couldn’t believe.
But she kept these thoughts to herself, tucking them deep in her heart.
The two of them savored this rare moment of tranquility.
Yet peaceful moments are fleeting. The time originally set aside for their trip had been consumed by the heat cycle. Though their travel plans fell through, their vacation time had officially come to an end.
And Jian Mo had to return to work.
For now, Jian Mo’s condition was relatively stable, so with the vacation over, it was natural for her to go back to the company and handle her duties.
The next day, Ye Wenjin woke up very early and got ready to go to work with Jian Mo.
This experience felt incredibly novel. While washing up, Ye Wenjin glanced at Jian Mo beside her, her lips curling up unconsciously.
Noticing her smile, Jian Mo raised an eyebrow. “Ajin, what are you smiling about?”
Ye Wenjin replied, “I was just thinking how new and exciting it is to go to work with you.”
Her eyes curved with joy, radiating anticipation.
And so, Jian Mo, who had previously been indifferent about work, began to look forward to it as well.
Just as Ye Wenjin had said, this was a fresh experience for her too.
Once ready, they headed downstairs for breakfast.
With Jian Mo’s heat cycle over, the household staff had naturally returned to work.
Seeing the aunties bustling about the corridors cleaning as they descended, Ye Wenjin felt a bit shy but still greeted them warmly.
The aunties couldn’t help but smile when they saw her.
Mr. Wu was waiting for them in the dining room. When the two had nearly finished eating, he reminded them, “Miss Wenjin, these are the medications Miss Momo needs to take today, divided into two doses as I’ve already prepared. Also, this injection should be administered after lunch. I’ll leave it to you to ensure Miss Momo takes her medicine properly.”
Ye Wenjin felt a momentary daze when she saw the medicine box.
By the time she snapped out of it, Jian Mo had already calmly put the box away.
“Let’s go.”
Hastily composing herself, Ye Wenjin followed Jian Mo into the car.
This was her first time visiting Jian Mo’s company, and she couldn’t deny the childlike excitement she felt, akin to going on a school trip for the first time. And yet…
She had imagined Jian Mo’s company would be large, but she hadn’t expected it to be this massive—a realm she would never have dared to step into before.
Twin skyscrapers stood side by side, each bearing the prominent Jian Corporation logo, making it clear that all of this was Jian Mo’s domain.
Ye Wenjin gaped at the endless stream of people pouring into the buildings—employees arriving for work. The sheer number was staggering. Though everyone moved briskly, their attire was polished and refined, perfectly matching her stereotypical image of a corporate drama.
However, they didn’t enter through the main doors. Instead, the car went straight to the underground parking lot, where they took a private elevator upstairs.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, Ye Wenjin spotted the woman who had delivered clothes to her last time.
The woman seemed momentarily surprised to see her but quickly masked her reaction, turning to Jian Mo with a professional demeanor.
“President Jian, there’s a meeting at nine.”
Jian Mo gave a slight nod. “Go ahead and arrange it.”
As they walked, conversations unfolded rapidly—one ending just as another began. In that short distance, three separate groups approached Jian Mo to discuss matters.
The intensity of it all left Ye Wenjin holding her breath, afraid of disrupting their rhythm.
Only as they neared the office did the flurry of activity ease slightly.
But before entering, Jian Mo paused and turned to a slightly inexperienced-looking young woman. “Bring in two iced Americanos.”
The moment the words were spoken, the woman hurried off to the break room.
Ye Wenjin followed Jian Mo inside in a daze.
On one hand, she was witnessing a side of Jian Mo entirely different from what she had imagined. On the other, she felt utterly out of place in this environment.
Everyone here was busy—even the intern-like women carried themselves with efficiency. Every single person was diligently focused on their work.
Ye Wenjin swallowed nervously, only relaxing slightly once they entered Jian Mo’s private office.
Yet once inside, she found herself inexplicably hesitant to look around, her gaze fixed and cautious.
For some reason, she kept slipping into an employee’s perspective, as if she were here to report on work, her heart pounding with tension.
It wasn’t until she heard a soft chuckle that Ye Wenjin snapped back to reality. She turned to see Jian Mo looking at her, a faint smile playing at her lips.
“A-Jin, what are you so nervous about?” Jian Mo asked leisurely.
Ye Wenjin: “…”
She forced an awkward smile. “I’m… just not used to it.”
The difference between campus life and the corporate world was vast. Even during finals week, the atmosphere at school was never this solemn. As an ungraduated college student, she stuck out like a sore thumb.
Everyone here seemed like a real adult…
Ye Wenjin couldn’t help but think.
However, that feeling was quickly alleviated when Jian Mo suddenly laughed out loud.
“You don’t have to rush, A-Jin. Just take it at your own pace.”
Ye Wenjin froze for a moment, then slowly exhaled and nodded. “Mhm!”
She hadn’t even realized it herself—she had unconsciously started feeling anxious again.
But Jian Mo had noticed, and warmth blossomed in Ye Wenjin’s heart.
Accompanying Jian Mo to work really was just that—keeping her company. After all, Ye Wenjin knew she couldn’t be of much help, so she obediently stayed by Jian Mo’s side. Whether it was meetings or office work, Ye Wenjin dutifully played the role of a mascot.
Meanwhile, in places she was unaware of, speculation about who she was had already spread throughout the entire company. Yet, no one managed to dig up any information about her, which only fueled everyone’s curiosity even more.
Only the secretary, who had met Ye Wenjin and knew her identity, wore a mysterious smile.
