After Mistaking My Sister’s Friend for a Scumbag Alpha - Chapter 9
The results for the pheromone compatibility test were available almost immediately. Curious about the outcome, Jiang Wanyi waited right there in the laboratory.
“Congratulations. Your compatibility is 99.9%,” the nurse said, handing them the testing report.
A score of 99.9% was essentially a perfect 100%. Over a decade ago, a case of 100% compatibility had ended in tragedy, where the Alpha committed domestic violence and the Omega eventually killed them in self-defense. The resulting public outcry and legal discussions were so intense that the hospital responsible for the test was forced to close. Since then, no hospital dared to issue a report claiming 100% compatibility.
However, Jiang Wanyi knew better. In that famous case, the compatibility hadn’t actually been a perfect match; the Alpha had simply bribed the hospital to falsify the results. The hospital had deserved to go bankrupt.
Thinking of this, and remembering that this very hospital was owned by the Shangguan family, Wanyi could not help but view the report with suspicion.
The original novel stated that her sister and the scumbag Alpha had a 99.9% compatibility. Now, the Alpha had managed to get the exact same result with her. An Alpha’s pheromones weren’t some universal key that fit everyone; there was no way such a perfect match happened twice. It was a blatant forgery.
Falsifying a compatibility report was a serious crime, but considering the Alpha’s lawless behavior in the book, it was perfectly in character. Convinced the result was fake, Wanyi felt nothing for the numbers on the page.
She simply thought that the scumbag Alpha was a master of manipulation. She would first dazzle an Omega with high compatibility and then treat them well, leading them to believe they had found their true soulmate. Once an Omega fell in love and allowed themselves to be fully marked, they would never be able to escape the Alpha’s control.
“Wanwan?” Shangguan Shi called out softly.
She noticed that Wanyi had been keeping her head down, and the scent of her pheromones had begun to shift. Wanyi quickly snapped back to reality, forcing a bright smile and an excited tone. “Sister Shi, our compatibility is so high!”
The doctor standing nearby added his compliments. “A maximum compatibility of 99.9% proves you are a match made in heaven. There is no one else in this world more suited for either of you.”
Wanyi gave another fake smile. The doctor’s hyperbolic praise only further convinced her that the Alpha was faking the results.
Shangguan Shi frowned slightly. While the Omega’s smile was flawless, her pheromones told a different story; they were sour and bitter. She was upset.
Shangguan Shi took her young wife’s hand and led her to an empty patient room. “Wanwan, are you hiding something from me?” she asked seriously.
“No, of course not,” Wanyi said, her large eyes blinking innocently.
“When an Alpha and Omega with high compatibility are together, they can sense each other’s pheromonal shifts,” Shangguan Shi explained. “I may be unwell and you cannot smell mine, but I can always smell yours.”
Wanyi’s eyes widened in shock. Why was such an important piece of information never mentioned in the textbooks?
“You say you like me,” the Alpha’s voice deepened slightly. This wasn’t an interrogation, but she clearly wasn’t going to let Wanyi brush it off. “Yet after seeing our compatibility, your pheromones turned sour. Why?”
Wanyi’s mind raced. “Because…” She lowered her head, struggling to reign in her pheromones. “Because I’ve actually liked you for a very long time.”
The Omega confessed in a small voice, “I’ve liked you since middle school. Seeing our compatibility made me think of all those years I spent pining for you in secret. I realized how much time we’ve lost, and it made me feel a bit bitter. If I had known we were such a good match, I would have dragged you here for a test and started pursuing you much sooner.”
Shangguan Shi was stunned. The Omega bit her lip nervously, and her pheromones became unstable, reflecting her inner trepidation.
When the Alpha remained silent for a long time, the girl looked up cautiously and tugged at her sleeve. “Shi… please don’t ignore me,” she whispered. “If you don’t like it, I’ll try my best to restrain my feelings.”
The girl’s voice was melodic and her tone was pitiable. Her ears were flushed a deep red, and beneath her trembling lashes, her dark, moist eyes were focused entirely on her. It was enough to make Shangguan Shi’s heart melt.
Shangguan Shi reached out and gently ruffled the girl’s hair. “I didn’t say I didn’t like it.”
If she hadn’t liked her, she wouldn’t have married her.
Wanyi finally broke into a smile. “That’s good.” She paused before adding an explanation. “When I gathered the courage to approach you before, I tried so hard to act natural, but I was actually terrified inside. Did you smell my pheromones back then?”
“I couldn’t always smell them,” Shangguan Shi admitted. “In the beginning, I couldn’t smell anything at all. But now, as long as you are by my side, I can.”
Wanyi felt a sense of relief knowing her early antics hadn’t been discovered. “Maybe that means we’re becoming more compatible and our hearts are growing closer,” she suggested casually.
“Perhaps,” Shangguan Shi replied, unable to explain the phenomenon herself.
Wanyi’s eyes flickered with a new thought, and she stepped forward to link her arm with the Alpha’s. “Sister Shi, could this be related to your condition? Why don’t you go back and let the doctor check you again? Maybe you’re getting better.”
Shangguan Shi thought for a moment. “Alright. Wait here for me.”
Wanyi nodded enthusiastically. Once the Alpha had entered the examination room, Wanyi sat in the empty waiting area and slowly covered her face, looking like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. She had almost died of embarrassment just now. Fortunately, she happened to remember a few lines from a script she had been working on, otherwise, she wouldn’t have known how to spin the lie.
In the other room, the doctor had already finished re-examining Shangguan Shi’s pheromones. He had used the sample taken earlier for the compatibility test.
“President, your pheromone levels have actually increased,” the doctor said, his face full of joy. “It seems that being around an Omega with high compatibility is beneficial for you. If this continues, you won’t need medication in another six months.”
Shangguan Shi’s expression relaxed significantly.
“However,” the doctor continued, “it will be difficult to reach the levels of a healthy Alpha, and it will be very hard for you to have children.”
The doctor’s use of “difficult” was a polite euphemism for “impossible,” but Shangguan Shi didn’t mind. To her, a normal Alpha’s pheromone levels were far too high and easily affected others. As for children, she had never planned on having any anyway. She only wondered if Jiang Wanyi wanted them; if she did, they could discuss adoption.
She was more concerned about something else. “Can I soothe an Omega during their heat?”
While modern suppressants were effective and had no side effects, the process was never as comfortable as an Alpha’s soothing pheromones.
“Not right now, but there shouldn’t be a problem in the future,” the doctor replied. “However, the prerequisite is that you must spend a lot of time with your partner. You should increase your physical intimacy—kissing, hugging, and so on. But remember to have her keep her pheromones restrained; you still cannot handle intense stimulation right now.”
******
“I have to restrain my pheromones at home?”
After hearing Shangguan Shi’s explanation, Jiang Wanyi had to work incredibly hard to suppress the urge to let her mouth curl into a grin. This was the best news she had heard all day.
“I’ll go buy some scent-blocking patches right now so I don’t stimulate you,” Wanyi said, preparing to head out.
Shangguan Shi pulled her back. “Wanwan, there’s no need for that. The doctor said things are fine just as they are.”
But it’s exhausting, Wanyi thought. She could control a faint scent, but maintaining that control constantly was like going for a non-stop jog.
“That’s good, then.” Wanyi forced a happy expression and sat back down beside the Alpha.
Shangguan Shi took her hand and continued, “The doctor also said that more kissing and hugging and increasing our physical intimacy, will help with my recovery.”
Kiss…ing…
Wanyi’s tongue felt thick in her mouth. She suddenly wanted to run away.
