After Marrying the Disabled Demon Lord as a Substitute, I Ran Away with His Child - Chapter 62
Chapter 62
Exclamations of surprise from her parents and sister echoed from within the small cottage, followed a moment later by an even louder burst of wailing from the baby.
Zuo Siqiu raised her hands to cover her face. She thought that no matter how much she wanted to hide from the world, the child was more important. The baby was crying so fiercely; she must have been terrified by Xuan Mo.
Taking a deep breath, she stood up, chest puffed out like a defiant fighting rooster. She decided to face her fear head-on and overcome her psychological barrier.
The moment she stepped into the room, however, fear defeated her once more. Her gaze still didn’t dare land on Xuan Mo himself; she only dared to look at the tiny infant girl cradled in his arms.
Seeing her sister enter, Zuo Mudong was at a total loss. Xuan Mo’s cultivation was truly terrifying; she was no match for him, and even if Siqiu joined in, they couldn’t beat him. Furthermore, Xuan Mo was holding the baby. If they acted rashly and accidentally hurt the little one, what would they do?
To her surprise, Zuo Siqiu walked straight up to Xuan Mo. She took the fussing child into her own arms, patting her back to soothe her. Keeping her head low, she muttered to Xuan Mo, “Your posture for holding her is all wrong, and you didn’t even restrain your aura. How could she not cry?”
Xuan Mo flicked his sleeve and tucked his hands behind his back.
Only when Zuo Siqiu heard no movement from the person beside her did she breathe a sigh of relief and focus on comforting the baby.
She didn’t agree to return to the Xuan Cloud Sect immediately. In the two days of interaction since Xuan Mo had revealed his identity, she had already figured out his temperament regarding the child. As long as she used the baby as an excuse, Xuan Mo was helpless against her.
Every time Xuan Mo tried to get her to return to the sect, she would say, “I know the spiritual energy here isn’t as abundant as at the Xuan Cloud Sect, but she was just born. You want her to endure the toil of travel? What if she falls ill on the road?”
Every time, Xuan Mo found himself at a stalemate. It would be more accurate to say that Xuan Mo was helpless against the child they shared.
Seeing that both the Leader and the Madam weren’t leaving, the members of the Xuan Cloud Sect stayed behind with thick-skinned persistence. Xuan Mo, however, vented all his frustrations onto his subordinates. He claimed, with high-sounding righteousness, that if they hadn’t shown up, his tracks wouldn’t have been exposed. Thus, he drove them all into the spirit fields to work.
Yan Jiaojiao and Blood Demon were busy using magic to dig holes in the dirt while complaining about their Leader. Naturally, Yan Jiaojiao did most of the talking while Blood Demon listened.
“The Leader is really too much! If it weren’t for us, he’d still be playing a hideously ugly, disfigured freak in this dirt, staring longingly at the little Young Master and the Madam every day.”
Blood Demon nodded.
“He actually punished us with farm work! He should be rewarding us! Without us, the Madam wouldn’t even know the child belongs to him!”
Blood Demon was shocked.
“Don’t you know why the Madam ran away in the first place? While she was asleep, the Leader seduced her but didn’t tell her what happened! The Madam thought nothing had happened between them, and when she got pregnant, she had no idea who the father was, so she ran away in terror.”
Blood Demon was puzzled. “But didn’t Madam always have… marks of affection on her before?”
“Those were fake marks the Madam made herself just to save face for the Leader!”
Blood Demon’s worldview shattered.
“I never imagined the Leader was that kind of person!” Yan Jiaojiao sighed. “As expected of the Demon Venerable; he really isn’t human at all.”
Blood Demon nodded in agreement.
With the addition of the Xuan Cloud Sect members, the spirit plants in the fields were harvested one crop after another, and Zuo Siqiu’s pouch grew heavy again. However, she wasn’t in the mood to celebrate her wealth. She shared everything that had happened between her and Xuan Mo with her family, sighing deeply, unsure of how to choose.
Her parents knew their daughters had endured much suffering. Their eldest daughter’s health was still poor due to the injuries sustained while being forced as a “furnace” for the Bixia Sect Leader. Their second daughter had been pregnant while saving them and had lived a life on the run. The elderly couple felt a deep sense of guilt that they lacked the strength to protect their daughters and even needed them to refine new bodies. Because of this guilt, they never brought up the child’s father. They simply wanted the family to live a stable, happy life from now on.
But they could no longer avoid the truth. Hearing their daughter’s story, they were filled with pity. Zuo Siqiu’s father even said, “Siqiu, if you don’t want anything to do with him, leave him to me. I’ll risk my life to win a chance for you to escape.”
How could Zuo Siqiu let the parents she had worked so hard to save throw their lives away against Xuan Mo for her sake?
Zuo Mudong had seen more of the relationship between Zuo Siqiu and Xuan Mo than their parents had. She took Siqiu’s hand, looking at the tiny infant in the small bed. “Siqiu, do you know what your own feelings for Xuan Mo are?”
Absurd, scandalous images flashed through Zuo Siqiu’s mind. Her face turned bright red, and she looked away, her voice tinged with agitation. “I… I have no feelings for him!”
Zuo Mudong and her parents exchanged a glance; both saw the realization in each other’s eyes.
After thinking for a moment, Zuo Mudong said, “Siqiu, it seems Xuan Mo won’t force you back for now. If you don’t want to go, we won’t. We’ll stay here and raise the baby together, alright?”
Zuo Siqiu’s eyes flickered. Through the door of the cottage, she could see Xuan Mo in the distance, supervising the souls and the Xuan Cloud Sect members in the fields. Just looking at his silhouette from afar made her heart race.
Xuan Mo, in the distance, seemed to sense something and turned to look back at her. Zuo Siqiu immediately averted her gaze, her heart thumping even harder in her chest.
She let out a breath and looked down at her daughter in the crib. The scales in her heart had already begun to shift, but she didn’t seem to have the courage to voice the decision that the shifting scales had reached.
