After Losing My Memory, I Went After My Archenemy - Chapter 23
The silence between Xia Rou’s parents, which had lasted the whole journey, finally erupted once they got home.
Wu Daiyun: “Why would you rather trust an outsider than believe your own daughter?”
“He’s my nephew, how can he be an outsider? Besides, there really isn’t enough evidence for this matter…”
The man’s voice volume lowered slightly out of guilt, his eyes darting around, unable even to look his wife directly in the eye.
“Yes, your daughter isn’t as important as your nephew. In your heart, your elder brother is your family. Xia Jianye, I chose to marry you because I valued your sincerity, honesty, and grounded nature. If I had known that you would repeatedly let our daughter suffer for the sake of your so-called Xia family, I would rather have stayed single my whole life!”
Wu Daiyun’s eyes turned red as she spoke.
Xia Jianye tried to go forward to comfort her, but the woman pushed him away sharply.
Watching his wife’s retreating back, Xia Jianye felt a pang of discomfort in his heart. He also had his own difficulties. Did he really do wrong?
Lin Xi accidentally fell asleep leaning against the headboard, and then she had a dream.
In that dream, Xia Rou used every trick in the book to seduce her, and ultimately, she couldn’t resist, furiously pressing her against the wall and kissing her.
The room was unlit; only the scattered moonlight from outside the window provided dim, mysterious, hazy, yet passionate light.
The sound of tearing fabric signaled how fierce the battle was, with messy shadows reflecting on the floor.
She was startled awake immediately after. Her arm was still tightly hugged by Xia Rou.
Her other arm was somewhat numb from being pressed down. Lin Xi checked the time; it was almost dawn. She carefully slipped away without waking the person still sound asleep.
When Xia Rou woke up, the room was empty. She had absolutely no memory of when Lin Xi had left.
Rubbing her eyes, she sat up on the bed. At that moment, her peripheral vision noticed a stack of loose change on the nightstand. Xia Rou cautiously reached out and picked it up. It had been a long time since she had seen such scattered cash; she used credit cards more often in her daily life.
It must be the money Lin Xi left.
Was she worried Xia Rou didn’t have money for the ride home?
… That was a bit naively sweet.
At least it proved that Lin Xi cared about her, even if just a little, right?
Just thinking this made Xia Rou feel as sweet as if she had eaten honey. She held the stack of money to her chest with both hands and giggled with her eyes closed.
It was already morning, and Xia Rou had not yet returned home. Xia Jianye had also been locked out by Wu Daiyun and spent the night outside their room.
Even when Wu Daiyun came out of the room in the morning, she still didn’t give him a good look.
“Daiyun, are you planning to ignore me like this forever?” The man looked like he had done something wrong, appearing haggard as if he had pulled an all-nighter.
Wu Daiyun glanced at him and said impatiently, “If you can’t get Rou Rou’s forgiveness this time, don’t even think about me talking to you again.”
“Also, I hope you think clearly about what’s more important: your family of origin, or your current family of three. You weigh it yourself!” The woman returned to the room and shut the door tightly.
The breakfast shop at the alley entrance was bustling with customers, including elderly residents, rushed office workers, and students from nearby, packing the small space to near capacity.
Lin Xi squeezed inside, had a simple breakfast, and picked up a packed meal for her uncle to take back.
“Staying out all night, huh? That’s not like you. Don’t you have anything to share with your uncle?”
The man teased with a smile, reaching out to take the food.
Lin Xi deliberately held onto it, “Forget it if you don’t want to eat.”
“Hey, fine, fine, I won’t tease you anymore,” the man pleaded and gave up.
“Oh, right. I’m not going to that Japanese restaurant anymore. I quit last night.”
“Huh? Why did you suddenly quit?”
Lin Xi didn’t answer and went back to her room to grab clothes for a shower.
The hot shower in the morning washed away her exhaustion and drove away the drowsiness. Lin Xi toweled her hair and came to the room, naturally turning on her phone screen on the desk, which showed it was only a little past nine.
After thinking for a moment, she opened her instant messaging app and typed into the chat box with Xia Rou: Are you home?
While hesitating whether to send it, the other side actually sent a message first.
Xia Rou: I’m home!
Deleting and re-editing, Lin Xi replied with one word: Oh.
Xia Rou: I caused you trouble last night. I’ll return the hotel money to you. You’re working hard, so I can’t let you spend that money.
Lin Xi just glanced at it. She didn’t accept the transfer, nor did she reply to the other person again.
In the afternoon, Lin Xi’s uncle stood downstairs calling for her to come down.
Lin Xi came down only to find out that a batch of goods had arrived at the antique shop. They were all small antique trinkets her uncle had collected online from various parts of the country, and he needed her help as heavy labor to move them.
Although she was a girl, she was an Alpha, naturally possessing surprising strength and a strong physique. Therefore, Lin Xi was often roped in by her uncle to help with work.
Trip after trip, one moving boxes and the other stacking them, they finished tidying up quickly.
Zhou Mingde placed his hands on his hips and sighed with relief, “It really makes a difference to have an extra pair of hands. Years ago, it was just me handling everything in and out of this shop, and I was so exhausted~”
Lin Xi suppressed the urge to complain. Just as she took a sip of water, she heard someone suddenly call her name from behind. Turning around, she saw it was Jiang Manqing.
“Lin Xi.”
The girl stood there with a beautiful smile, looking meticulously dressed, refined and ladylike.
Lin Xi didn’t care what she was wearing or what accessories she had on. She was just curious about the intention behind the sudden visit.
“Hello, is something the matter?”
Zhou Mingde, inside the house, was overjoyed to see a pretty Omega girl coming to see his niece outside, and he immediately ran out to greet her.
“Are you Lin Xi’s classmate? Come in, please come in, don’t stand outside. Come in for a cup of tea.”
Lin Xi: “…”
Jiang Manqing, who was about to answer Lin Xi, turned and asked in confusion, “This is…”
“I’m her uncle!” Zhou Mingde enthusiastically introduced himself.
Just like that, Jiang Manqing was invited into the antique shop by the man, and Lin Xi was forced to accompany her.
Soon, she watched her uncle ask the girl her age, name, school, and what her family did. Lin Xi was utterly helpless and speechless.
“This shop is very unique. Can I take a picture here?” Jiang Manqing politely asked.
“Of course you can, take as many pictures as you want, go ahead,” Zhou Mingde gestured.
Lin Xi shot a glance at the man, her eyes full of silent reproach, asking: Where are your boundaries and integrity?
The sign right outside the shop clearly stated “No Photography.”
“I was wondering, what’s upstairs…” Jiang Manqing curiously pointed up.
“Haha, that’s where my niece and I live,” Zhou Mingde enthusiastically explained.
“Can I go up and take a look?” Jiang Manqing asked again.
Lin Xi: “No.”
Zhou Mingde: “No problem, if you don’t mind.”
The two spoke simultaneously.
Jiang Manqing subconsciously looked at Lin Xi and also heard her voice clearly. She was quite understanding and said, “It’s fine, I won’t look. It’s nice just to sit here.”
By the time Jiang Manqing was seen off, the sky had grown dark.
“This Omega is quite pretty and has a great temperament. I can tell she’s interested in you. Though, she’s still not as pretty as the one you brought back last time,” Zhou Mingde evaluated, rubbing the stubble on his chin.
“If there’s nothing else, I’m going upstairs.”
Tossing out a faint sentence, Lin Xi turned and went up.
“This girl, you deserve to be alone forever,” the man grumbled, disappointed.
Before going to sleep, Xia Rou was lying on her bed, scrolling through a blog. Her homepage received a new update notification from Jiang Manqing.
She saw the other person had posted a selfie, and she immediately recognized the background in the photo: it was inside Lin Xi’s uncle’s antique shop.
Xia Rou instantly sat up on the bed, furious.
