After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 9
Jiang Zhi was still meticulously drying her hair.
Ji Fanghuai’s mind was already a whirlwind of thoughts, but fortunately, Jiang Zhi didn’t actually watch the movie. Instead, when her hair was semi-dry, she changed into her pajamas and, with her hair down, proceeded to wash Ji Fanghuai’s hair.
Lying on the shampoo chair, Ji Fanghuai felt very nervous, thinking that in this position, Jiang Zhi would have an extremely clear view of her face.
The injury on her brow bone had healed, leaving a scar that was neither too big nor too small. While it didn’t affect her overall appearance, it did somewhat affect her mood.
No one is indifferent to the appearance of their own face.
Ji Fanghuai was already contemplating how to remove the scar.
A fine stream of water washed over her head, bringing Ji Fanghuai back to her senses. She opened her eyes and saw Jiang Zhi carefully squeezing out the specialized shampoo, her expression habitually serious and focused, her jawline tightly set as if she were washing some precious artifact.
Ji Fanghuai wanted to make her relax and said, “I saw an unfinished small pig carving in your study. Do you know how to carve?”
“Mhm, I learned it from an old master when I was little,” Jiang Zhi lathered the shampoo in her palm and gently applied it to Ji Fanghuai’s head.
Ji Fanghuai’s hair was very short now, almost a buzz cut, even slightly prickly to the touch, but the scar on her scalp was still clearly visible.
Jiang Zhi became even more careful, cleaning her scalp gently with her fingertips, like a massage, and then asked, “Do you like that little pig?”
“I like it.” Ji Fanghuai had a strange feeling that whatever she said she liked, Jiang Zhi would give it to her.
Warm water once again rinsed over her head, feeling cozy and warm. All the foam was washed away, and Jiang Zhi wrapped a towel around Ji Fanghuai’s head, carefully helping her sit up.
Since her hair was already short, it was dry the moment the towel was removed. Ji Fanghuai lay down on the bed first. Jiang Zhi was still blow-drying her own hair; the buzzing sound was present but not bothersome.
Ji Fanghuai pondered what Xin Ling had said, combined it with Jiang Zhi’s answer, and had already concocted a dramatic scenario: the uncared-for Jiang Zhi, neglected by her stepfather and stepmother, ran off to learn carving from an old master.
And she was learning jade carving, not wood carving.
“Xin Ling told me your parents passed away,” Ji Fanghuai regretted saying it as soon as the words left her mouth. She didn’t intend to reopen Jiang Zhi’s wounds.
But she wanted to know the details more clearly.
Jiang Zhi paused, her expression momentarily strained, then she seemed to let go and said, “Yes, my dad passed away when I was three, and my mom passed away when I was eight.”
Ji Fanghuai didn’t know how to comfort Jiang Zhi. She knew that delayed comfort was useless, and she couldn’t bring herself to hug her like Jiang Zhi did, saying, ‘at least you still have me.’
She could only awkwardly change the subject and say, “I want to go see my parents tomorrow.”
“Not yet,” Jiang Zhi rejected her very directly this time, leaving no room for negotiation.
“I can jump and run now, I’m fine,” Ji Fanghuai was still looking for a sense of belonging. Since she had no immediate family or friends, she felt she should at least visit her parents’ graves.
“Your condition is not as good as you think. Traveling far easily causes injury, and you get very motion sick. We’ll go another time,” Jiang Zhi did not back down at all.
Ji Fanghuai’s focus, however, wasn’t there. She asked, “My parents’ graves aren’t in this city?”
“They are, but the cemetery is quite far from here,” Jiang Zhi didn’t want to continue the topic. “In short, we’ll go when your condition is better. Otherwise, if you get hurt, I’ll blame myself, and Uncle and Auntie will blame me too.”
Suddenly, a chill ran down Ji Fanghuai’s spine. She was actually quite timid and afraid of ghosts, so she immediately stopped talking.
Jiang Zhi understood and glanced at her, easily concluding the topic. She went to the closet, retrieved a thin blanket, and began tidying the sofa.
Ji Fanghuai had already prepared herself to sleep with Jiang Zhi tonight, so seeing her prepare the sofa made her feel strange. “Are you going to sleep on the sofa?”
“I was afraid you wouldn’t be used to it,” Jiang Zhi quietly tidied up without lifting her head, taking one of the pillows from the big bed.
Instantly, the pair of pillows were left alone, one on each side.
Ji Fanghuai would indeed feel unaccustomed to sleeping with Jiang Zhi, but the sofa was just a normal two-seater, and with Jiang Zhi’s long limbs, she would probably have to rest her legs on the armrest.
Ji Fanghuai hesitated several times, and Jiang Zhi stopped and deliberately asked, “What’s wrong?”
Ji Fanghuai felt like she was a cuckoo usurping a nest. She said, “Let’s sleep together. I can get used to it.”
She would have to get used to it sooner or later anyway.
Jiang Zhi seemed to be persuaded, her eyebrows curved slightly, but her expression remained calm as she said, “Okay.”
When they went to sleep, a wide distance was maintained between Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi, with only the bedside lamp on.
Jiang Zhi always carried a faint scent that Ji Fanghuai found very familiar, even missed, like a scent imprinted on her memory.
It was barely before ten o’clock. Ji Fanghuai thought for a long time and finally opened her mouth to discuss something with Jiang Zhi. “Can I discuss something with you?”
Jiang Zhi turned her head, seemingly to hear clearly, and slowly moved closer, saying softly, “What is it?”
Now, the distance between them was close, shoulder-to-shoulder. Ji Fanghuai was slightly nervous. She said, “Are we getting married soon?”
Jiang Zhi seemed to consider it for a few seconds. She said, “Yes, the original plan was to get married right after your birthday.”
Ji Fanghuai did a quick calculation. It was currently the end of June, which meant, according to the original plan, they would be getting married in about two months.
She said uncertainly, “The thing I want to discuss is, can we not get married yet?”
Ji Fanghuai had never imagined getting married to another person. Although she had amnesia, she felt this way subconsciously.
She seemed to have a fear of marriage.
Jiang Zhi didn’t answer, and for a moment, it was quiet.
Ji Fanghuai knew this kind of thing was hard to accept. Any normal person couldn’t accept their fiancée suddenly getting amnesia and then suddenly saying she didn’t want to get married.
She was about to explain when Jiang Zhi suddenly spoke. “You want to call off the engagement? You don’t want to marry me anymore?”
Her voice was a little cold, making Ji Fanghuai instinctively a little afraid.
“No,” Ji Fanghuai quickly explained. “I’ve forgotten you now, and I’m very sorry. I feel that getting married now wouldn’t be fair to either of us, and of course, it would be more unfair to you.”
Jiang Zhi had already suffered enough.
Putting herself in Jiang Zhi’s shoes, her perfectly fine fiancée suddenly had a near-death experience, woke up with amnesia, and was now insisting on not getting married.
Just thinking about it made Ji Fanghuai feel devastated.
She unconsciously softened her tone and said, “I want to take things slow.”
Jiang Zhi confirmed again, “Just take things slow?”
“Mhm, just take things slow,” Ji Fanghuai spoke quickly, feeling like Jiang Zhi had somehow led her into a trap.
Actually, in her situation, even asking for a divorce would be normal, wouldn’t it? Especially since they weren’t even married yet.
“Alright then,” Jiang Zhi still sounded quite disappointed.
However, disappointment was normal. She could have been marrying her fiancée, but now the plan was disrupted due to sudden amnesia. Ji Fanghuai felt a little sorry for Jiang Zhi.
“When I recover my memory…” Ji Fanghuai felt embarrassed saying it, as if Jiang Zhi was desperate to marry her, but right now, all she could do was delay.
Jiang Zhi disagreed. She said, “The doctor hasn’t said when your memory will recover. Please don’t let memory constrain us, okay? We can build new memories.”
Ji Fanghuai realized she was right. Jiang Zhi had thought of a better solution.
If she could never recover her memory, should she string Jiang Zhi along for the rest of her life?
“Okay.”
They were already fiancées and already had feelings for each other. Now, they were just reacquainting themselves, so it should be easy to adjust, right?
With this thought, Ji Fanghuai gradually fell asleep.
Jiang Zhi turned off the bedside lamp and, in the darkness, slowly moved her body closer to Ji Fanghuai.
When Ji Fanghuai woke up, she was somehow nestled in Jiang Zhi’s arms, in a strange position pressed against Jiang Zhi’s chest…
She immediately defended herself, “I didn’t do it on purpose.”
