After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 5
The two of them stared at each other in an odd posture, their faces almost touching, close enough to see the fine downy hairs on the other’s face.
Jiang Zhi was the first to break the stillness in the air. She straightened up and said casually, “Mi Li said you didn’t eat much. Are you still hungry?”
“No, I’m not,” Ji Fanghuai pursed her lips.
However, Jiang Zhi knew she was a very picky eater and said, “Aunt Chu will send over some food later. We’ll eat together then.”
Aunt Chu was the housekeeper at Jiang Zhi’s home. Sometimes, Ji Fanghuai’s meals were prepared by her, always guided by a nutritionist, and the food was consistently to Ji Fanghuai’s liking.
“Mhm,” Ji Fanghuai nodded again, as if nothing had happened.
Jiang Zhi appeared even more composed, having only been momentarily stunned the instant Ji Fanghuai opened her eyes.
But Ji Fanghuai could not be as nonchalant as Jiang Zhi.
“Why is your number the only one in my contacts?”
Ji Fanghuai had been instructed not to overthink, so she only knew she had a phone and rarely used it.
But today, after adding Lin Mianmian, when she tried to check if there were any other contacts on her phone, she discovered that her contacts list contained only Jiang Zhi.
Anyone who has lived in the world would not have only their fiancé’s contact information on their phone.
Her question was sudden. Jiang Zhi seemed to have anticipated it, and she calmly replied, “That’s a new SIM card and a new phone, so it’s normal that it only has my contact information. Your previous phone was smashed and is currently with the police as evidence.”
Ji Fanghuai was half-skeptical and asked, “There’s no backup?”
Jiang Zhi shook her head. “No.”
How could there be no backup? Ji Fanghuai considered herself a meticulous person, and her underlying nature could not possibly be changed by amnesia.
Moreover, Jiang Zhi’s explanation felt too one-sided.
She remained silent, simply staring at Jiang Zhi.
During the prolonged eye contact, Jiang Zhi finally blinked and admitted, “Yes, I was lying to you.”
Ji Fanghuai looked at Jiang Zhi in disbelief, yet also felt it was to be expected. From the beginning, she felt Jiang Zhi was hiding something from her.
Jiang Zhi spoke earnestly, “I didn’t want you to contact others, so I intentionally only left my contact information.”
Ji Fanghuai was stunned. “W-why?”
“Suddenly meeting many people is not good for your current condition. Let’s take it slow, proceed step by step, get to know each other again, and start anew. It’s better than suddenly facing a bunch of strangers. Actually, you see me as a stranger right now, don’t you?” As Jiang Zhi said this, a hint of melancholy even flashed in her eyes as she looked at Ji Fanghuai.
Ji Fanghuai, having been exposed, nervously darted her eyes around and did not respond.
Jiang Zhi then added, “Besides, it’s the doctor’s order.”
Ji Fanghuai fell silent. In the end, it was all for her own good.
The doctor had strongly cautioned her not to dwell on past events. Her brain was very fragile, and they feared that overthinking would cause a crash.
She had been judging a good person with a petty mind.
Ji Fanghuai was unsure how to face Jiang Zhi. She admitted she still viewed Jiang Zhi as a stranger; she simply couldn’t instantly transition into the role of a fiancée.
She tried hard to convince herself that this was like living life again, accumulating memories from scratch.
Once Ji Fanghuai came to this realization, she said, “I’d like to reacquaint myself with myself. Could I trouble you to introduce me?”
Even now, she wasn’t clear on even the most basic details, like her age. All she knew was that she had a fiancée and her parents were deceased.
The corners of Jiang Zhi’s mouth subtly curved upwards. She said, “You are twenty-five years old this year, your birthday is August twenty-fifth, you are a Virgo, your height is 165, your weight… is much lighter than before. Before the amnesia, you ran a coffee shop.”
A coffee shop?
Ji Fanghuai savored the memory of the smell of coffee in her mind and felt a sense of nostalgia. No wonder she felt something was missing in her life.
She wanted to be discharged, to start living again.
Ji Fanghuai suppressed the urge to leave the hospital and, returning the courtesy, asked, “What about you?”
Jiang Zhi looked down and smiled. “I am a little older than you.”
“How much older?”
Ji Fanghuai was eager to know everything about Jiang Zhi, feeling that only by doing so could she thoroughly understand the woman before her, her fiancée.
Jiang Zhi held up a finger and said, “Four years.”
Ji Fanghuai found it quite amazing. When she first saw Jiang Zhi, she felt that Jiang Zhi was mature, composed, intellectual, and elegant, and certainly older than her.
And not just one or two years—now she felt four years seemed just right.
Twenty-nine, an age of striving.
Jiang Zhi took in her reaction and said, “Is there anything else you want to know? You can ask me directly.”
After a moment’s consideration, Ji Fanghuai asked directly, “When did we start dating?”
Jiang Zhi paused slightly and said, “Three years ago.”
“Who pursued whom?”
The moment Ji Fanghuai asked, she already had the answer in her heart. It must have been her who pursued first.
After all, Jiang Zhi was so perfect.
But Jiang Zhi surprised her by saying, “I pursued you.”
“How could that be?” Ji Fanghuai couldn’t quite believe it.
She knew she must have been attractive before the accident.
She had a standard oval face, and her eyes, nose bridge, and lips were all delicate and refined, but compared to Jiang Zhi, they were slightly inferior.
For a moment, Jiang Zhi looked at Ji Fanghuai with near-infatuation and whispered, “Because you are my little sun.”
“What sun?” Ji Fanghuai didn’t understand that sentence.
Jiang Zhi immediately snapped back to the present, simply smiled, and did not elaborate on the topic.
Just then, Aunt Chu brought the food.
The two went to the living room to eat. During the meal, Ji Fanghuai’s phone vibrated—a new message on WeChat.
Her WeChat was also newly registered with the new phone number, and she had no one else but Lin Mianmian.
Ji Fanghuai put down her chopsticks, picked up her phone, and replied to the message.
Jiang Zhi was still picking up food, but her attention was entirely on Ji Fanghuai. Her brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
After replying to the message, Ji Fanghuai looked at Jiang Zhi somewhat apologetically and continued eating.
Jiang Zhi said as if unintentionally, “A new friend?”
Ji Fanghuai nodded and briefly explained the day’s events.
“I met her today while wandering around. She’s a fellow patient.”
Hearing she was a patient, Jiang Zhi’s expression lightened considerably. She said, “You didn’t have many friends to begin with, and now that you have amnesia, making one or two new friends is quite good.”
“I think so too,” Ji Fanghuai strongly agreed with Jiang Zhi’s words and then casually asked, “How’s the company?”
“Just some minor issues, the company hasn’t lost much,” Jiang Zhi seemed quite willing to share her life with Ji Fanghuai and said with a smile, “But dealing with it takes a bit of time, especially since sometimes you need to make an example of someone.”
Ji Fanghuai felt that Jiang Zhi must be cold and impersonal in the workplace, but managing a company required some tactics.
And Jiang Zhi in everyday life was very gentle.
Jiang Zhi chewed slowly while eating but wasn’t strictly bound by the rule of not speaking while eating. As she was almost finished, she said, “Someone will come to see you tomorrow.”
“Who is it?” Ji Fanghuai sipped the sweet soup in small mouthfuls.
She knew Jiang Zhi didn’t want her to contact people from her past, but no one had visited her during her hospital stay. She guessed the numbers on her original phone were probably all unimportant contacts.
Thinking this way, she truly lost the desire to contact her old friends.
Jiang Zhi said, “Xin Ling, a mutual friend of ours.”
Ji Fanghuai had no impression of this person, only remembering from asking the assistant earlier that she was the company’s vice president. Did this person know her too?
However, she was Jiang Zhi’s fiancée, and the other person had co-founded the company with Jiang Zhi, so it was perfectly normal for her to know Ji Fanghuai.
The next day, outside the city hospital’s inpatient building, a striking red sports car was parked by the road. Jiang Zhi got out and walked straight toward the woman by the car.
“What’s Ji Fanghuai’s condition?” Xin Ling rushed forward and asked, grabbing Jiang Zhi. “How badly was she hurt? Why hasn’t she been discharged after so many days in the hospital?”
Jiang Zhi said, “She has amnesia.”
Xin Ling’s expression instantly became exaggerated. She said, “No way? That’s so melodramatic!”
Jiang Zhi shot her a look. “Anyway, don’t say anything stupid when we meet her later.”
“What could I say that’s stupid?” Xin Ling rolled her eyes at Jiang Zhi. “Unless you have a guilty conscience, why would you be afraid of what I say? Did she really lose her memory?”
When Jiang Zhi and Xin Ling entered the ward, Ji Fanghuai had just woken up and saw Jiang Zhi with a strange woman as soon as she opened her eyes.
The woman was about the same height as Jiang Zhi, estimated to be over 170, with a stylish, short, curly bob, wearing a cropped top and slim-fit jeans—a stark contrast to Jiang Zhi, who was in a shirt and dress pants.
Ji Fanghuai thought, this must be Xin Ling.
“Fanghuai,” Xin Ling rushed forward, tossing her bag aside, and called out enthusiastically, nearly giving her a hug.
Ji Fanghuai was somewhat uncomfortable and also understood that Jiang Zhi must have told her about her condition. She apologized sincerely, saying, “I’m sorry, I don’t remember you. You must be Ms. Xin Ling.”
“Ms. Xin? What Ms. Xin? You used to call me Jie Jie. Why are you so formal now?” Xin Ling acted as if she were a theatrical performer, and her face genuinely showed a bit of hurt and sadness.
Ji Fanghuai felt awkward calling a stranger Jie Jie (Older Sister). Jiang Zhi was currently the person she knew best, and she had never called her Jie Jie.
Wait, she didn’t have some strange fetish; why should she call everyone she met Jie Jie?
Ji Fanghuai could only look helplessly at Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi coldly told Xin Ling, “Be serious. Fanghuai doesn’t know you now.”
Xin Ling glared at Jiang Zhi but immediately returned to normal, though she was still concerned about Ji Fanghuai’s aloofness toward her.
Ji Fanghuai placated her, saying, “You look even younger than I do, so I dare not call you Jie Jie.”
“Fanghuai is so good with words after losing her memory,” Xin Ling immediately brightened, eager to hug and kiss Ji Fanghuai.
However, Jiang Zhi’s face beside her grew darker and darker.
Xin Ling was not afraid of her at all now.
“The term ‘old cow eating young grass’ is exactly for someone with impure motives like Jiang Zhi. Now, it’s time for us sisters to catch up. Ms. Jiang, please go make me a cup of tea.”
Jiang Zhi gave Xin Ling a displeased look, rose with a cold face, and poured a glass of water.
Ji Fanghuai, however, blushed involuntarily. She was always proper when she was with Jiang Zhi. Xin Ling seemed naturally improper and always steered the conversation to strange places.
Ji Fanghuai again sent a pleading look, and Jiang Zhi’s mood improved considerably. She said, “Don’t talk nonsense.”
“You and I don’t have common ground,” Xin Ling pulled Ji Fanghuai close and started another stream of complaints. “It’s all Jiang Zhi’s fault for not telling me sooner, so I couldn’t come to see you earlier. How badly were you hurt? Does it still hurt?”
In reality, she was having a great time traveling the world. If Jiang Zhi hadn’t pressured her to come back and look after the company, she wouldn’t have returned.
“It doesn’t hurt now,” Ji Fanghuai honestly replied. “I just feel a little dizzy.”
Xin Ling sighed. “What a pity. I consulted the doctor before coming. It looks like you’ll have to be careful and take care of your body from now on. We can’t go clubbing and adventuring together anymore.”
“Cherish your life,” Jiang Zhi suddenly interjected with these words coldly, clearly indicating she would not allow Ji Fanghuai to engage in such extreme sports.
Xin Ling argued with her, “What do you know, someone who just knows how to date all day? Life is about movement! I’d rather die in a blaze of glory than live a mundane life.”
Jiang Zhi did not refute the dating comment, merely saying, “If something went wrong, you’d be dying miserably.”
It was evident that the two often bickered, and Ji Fanghuai found it amusing.
She suddenly thought of Lin Mianmian, the woman who always wore a helmet when going out, and Xin Ling—they were like two extremes.
One was afraid of death, the other wasn’t.
Speaking of common topics, Ji Fanghuai felt she had more in common with Lin Mianmian. When she was with Jiang Zhi, they didn’t need to deliberately bring up subjects, and as for Xin Ling, it felt a little like chatting just for the sake of it.
After they finished complaining, they both asked Ji Fanghuai, “What do you want to eat?”
Ji Fanghuai had heard this phrase most often recently. Now she was glad no one else came to visit her, or every day would be a trial.
“I don’t particularly want to eat anything.”
“Alright then. I’ll head home to keep the old lady company. Fanghuai, come visit Jie Jie’s house when you have time,” Xin Ling said with a mischievous smile, trying to coax her. “Say Jie Jie once, and I’ll leave.”
Since Xin Ling was leaving anyway, Ji Fanghuai felt it wouldn’t hurt to say Jie Jie. Right now, she just wanted to quickly see this great Buddha off. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, Jiang Zhi suddenly stopped her from the side. “Don’t call her that.”
Ji Fanghuai was startled.
This was the most serious she had ever seen Jiang Zhi, whose gaze was so icy it could freeze Xin Ling into a little ice person. It was just calling her Jie Jie; it wasn’t some strange title.
