After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 4
The little assistant said unhurriedly, “Mr. Jiang has always had a fiancée, she just hasn’t been made public.”
Sister Li was skeptical. She walked closer, intending to speak with Ji Fanghuai, but the little assistant cleverly blocked her way.
Ji Fanghuai got a headache whenever she talked to strangers, and given that Sister Li was someone from Jiang Zhi’s company, her intention to get close was obvious.
She said, “You two talk first. I’ll go sit over there.”
The little assistant continued to be tangled up by Sister Li, who was asking endless questions.
Ji Fanghuai pondered the words she had just heard, unconsciously rubbing her fingers as her thoughts drifted aimlessly.
It wasn’t until a figure caught her eye that she noticed a slender woman sitting not far away. The woman was wearing a blue and white striped hospital gown but had on sports shoes and a dark black helmet.
Wearing a hospital gown yet topping it with a helmet seemed somewhat odd.
Isn’t she hot?
This was Ji Fanghuai’s first thought. Her thin sleep cap already made her feel a little stuffy; wouldn’t wearing a helmet be truly unbearable?
Ji Fanghuai was idle and bored at the moment. She usually enjoyed observing the comings and goings of people downstairs through the glass window. Her eyesight was excellent, so she rested her chin on her hand and began to observe.
After observing for a while, the woman seemed to sense Ji Fanghuai’s gaze. She turned her head and glanced at her. Seeing that she didn’t recognize her, the woman turned her head back.
Ji Fanghuai usually didn’t even have a fellow patient to talk to. Seeing that she had been discovered, she took the initiative to go over and greet her.
“Hello.”
“Hello.”
The woman seemed a bit reserved, appearing not to be a good conversationalist, and she didn’t know why Ji Fanghuai wanted to strike up a conversation.
“Did you also hurt your head?” Ji Fanghuai pointed to her own head, smiling innocently.
One of the drawbacks of staying in the luxurious VIP ward was that she didn’t even have a fellow patient. She faced Jiang Zhi every day, and there were some things she couldn’t complain about to Jiang Zhi.
Because complaining wouldn’t lead to empathy, it would only make Jiang Zhi worry more.
The woman seemed to hesitate about whether to take off her helmet, but in the end, out of courtesy, she bit her lip and removed it.
The woman had her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail and a doll face, with skin that was unnaturally pale.
Ji Fanghuai noticed that the woman hardly dared to make eye contact with her, perhaps because of her introverted personality. She looked to be about the same age as Ji Fanghuai, although Ji Fanghuai wasn’t sure exactly how old she was.
Because of wearing the helmet, the fine hairs at the woman’s temples were damp. She was delicate and graceful—a beautiful embryo.
The woman glanced at Ji Fanghuai’s hospital gown and sleep cap, dropped her guard, and said, “I was watching people play basketball and got hit by a ball that flew off the court. It caused a mild concussion.”
“Ah?” Ji Fanghuai was completely taken aback by this. She subconsciously wanted to cover her head. If her current head were to be hit by a basketball, her skull might even crack open.
“Isn’t that just terrible luck?” The woman smiled shyly. Seeing Ji Fanghuai’s kind face, she was very willing to talk to her.
“Not necessarily. I was hit by a flowerpot falling from upstairs and went straight into the ICU. Isn’t that even worse?” Ji Fanghuai hadn’t expected this to turn into a ‘who’s more tragic’ contest.
The woman was very surprised and asked with concern, “How is your situation now? How did they handle the perpetrator?”
“I can walk and move now; there’s nothing seriously wrong. The perpetrator will probably go to jail,” Ji Fanghuai wasn’t entirely sure about the details, but the look in Jiang Zhi’s eyes when she talked about it clearly showed she wouldn’t let the perpetrator off the hook.
Of course, Ji Fanghuai didn’t want them to be let off either.
The woman agreed, “It’s right that throwing things from a height should result in jail time. Your luck is just too rotten.”
They were, in a way, suffering from the same misfortune.
Ji Fanghuai sat down and chatted with her, saying, “Why were you wearing a helmet earlier when it’s so hot? Are you afraid of being hit by a basketball again?”
But there was no one playing basketball here.
The woman looked a little embarrassed and said, “Actually, I always wear a helmet when I go out. The main thing is that I’m naturally unlucky. Being hit by a basketball was during a neighborhood sports meet, and I was often hit on the head by strange things when I was a child, too.”
“This…” Ji Fanghuai was full of surprise and thought it was a bit exaggerated. Then she considered that if she had also worn a helmet when she went out, she might not have lost her memory now.
The woman rubbed the tip of her nose and whispered, “To be honest with you, I’m very afraid of dying. I’m very careful even when crossing traffic lights and never dare to look at my phone. I got my driver’s license but I don’t dare to drive. Because I always feel like I’ll have a close encounter with the Grim Reaper if I’m not careful.”
“When I was little, I was constantly sick with minor and major illnesses. My parents thought I wouldn’t grow up. After growing up, I often had accidents. Even when playing games, I’m the first one to be ‘knocked out’ upon landing.”
Ji Fanghuai felt deep sympathy.
“When I was a child, doctors warned me not to do this or that, and of course, it’s the same now,” the woman babbled on to Ji Fanghuai.
Ji Fanghuai felt strongly about this and said, “I also have many things I can’t do now. The doctor advises me not to look down or engage in strenuous exercise. Even tying my shoelaces, I have to do it slowly, just in case blood rushes to my head when I bend down.”
As she spoke, she lifted a corner of her cap.
The fresh scar was still frightening. The woman expressed deep sympathy.
The two could be described as hitting it off immediately, sharing a similar plight. They talked about many things happening in the hospital and felt they had met too late.
The little assistant watched from the side, feeling a strong sense that she would be scolded by her boss when she returned.
“Miss Ji, we should head back now.” The little assistant glanced at her wristwatch. Two hours had passed. She didn’t know how these two managed to chat for two hours about their respective tragic encounters.
Ji Fanghuai also didn’t know why she had so much to say to a stranger.
Perhaps it’s precisely because she’s a stranger.
Because she was a stranger, Ji Fanghuai was uninhibited; she spoke whatever she wanted.
In contrast, when she was with Jiang Zhi—even though she was Jiang Zhi’s fiancée—Jiang Zhi was a stranger to her. There were many things she didn’t even know how to ask, let alone confide.
Ji Fanghuai took out her phone, brought up the QR code, and said, “My name is Ji Fanghuai. Let’s add each other as friends.”
The woman said happily, “My name is Lin Mianmian.”
The two quickly exchanged contact information.
“I’m going back now.” Ji Fanghuai pointed to her head, signaling her retreat. After all, Jiang Zhi would be back soon, and she had promised she would only be out for a little stroll.
Lin Mianmian smiled, “Okay, let’s chat again when we have time.”
Ji Fanghuai had gotten some fresh air and made a new friend, feeling relaxed and cheerful. As soon as she returned to the ward, she lay down on the bed and obediently took her medicine.
As the medicine entered her mouth, she subconsciously asked, “Where’s the candy?”
The little assistant blinked innocently, “What candy?”
Ji Fanghuai had no choice but to swallow the medicine with a bitter face, too embarrassed to admit that she was afraid of the bitterness and that Jiang Zhi always had a mint candy ready when feeding her medicine.
Jiang Zhi had two goals for this meeting: to recover losses and to warn the employees. No matter the circumstance, important decisions must be approved by her or Xin Ling. The actions of the Operations Department manager—who had relied on being a company veteran and arbitrarily changed the operational plan without seeking instructions—must be severely punished.
After the meeting, which included discussing remedial measures, assigning work, and the travel time and other minor details, it had already exceeded the expected three hours.
Jiang Zhi returned to the hospital after dinner time.
The cafeteria had special nutritious meals prepared for patients.
The little assistant wasn’t as meticulous as Jiang Zhi and didn’t know that Ji Fanghuai was very picky about food. When mealtime arrived, she went and got the best-looking nutritious meal from the cafeteria.
Ji Fanghuai took two bites and found it greasy. Although it was a patient’s meal from the cafeteria, it was still a cafeteria meal. Anything cooked in a large batch couldn’t be refined enough to cater to everyone.
“I’m full.” Ji Fanghuai felt that she was being overly sensitive, but she just couldn’t eat it. Having become accustomed to the exquisite meals brought by Jiang Zhi, the cafeteria food was inevitably inferior.
The little assistant was at a loss, “Is it not tasty? What do you usually eat, Miss Ji?”
Ji Fanghuai excused herself, saying, “I’m feeling a bit unwell. Could you please cut me a dragon fruit?”
After eating the fruit, Ji Fanghuai started waiting for Jiang Zhi to return.
She didn’t feel time passing slowly when chatting with Lin Mianmian, but now she felt very bored. She simply closed her eyes to rest.
“Mr. Jiang.”
The little assistant lowered her voice, probably thinking she was asleep. Ji Fanghuai heard Jiang Zhi lightly acknowledge her, and then the sound of the door closing followed.
The little assistant had left the ward.
The deliberately hushed footsteps came closer and closer. Ji Fanghuai clearly knew it was Jiang Zhi approaching. Just as she was about to open her eyes, she heard Jiang Zhi whisper softly, “Fanghuai.”
Jiang Zhi’s voice had always been pleasant, a standard yujie (mature woman) voice. When she spoke, she was always unhurried and slow, making people subconsciously trust her words.
The current whisper, however, sounded like an intimate secret between lovers.
Ji Fanghuai felt a shadow slowly fall over her eyes, and a light, shallow breath brushed her face. It was Jiang Zhi leaning in. Perhaps she wanted to kiss her.
Jiang Zhi always unconsciously showed affection toward her, and it was always innocent acts like kissing her forehead. Ji Fanghuai knew all this.
Because she was Ji Fanghuai, Jiang Zhi’s fiancée.
But what if she wasn’t?
Ji Fanghuai suddenly opened her eyes.
