After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 31
“Mr. Xin, I want to resign.” After careful consideration, Lin Mianmian still felt that resigning was the better choice.
Her current job wasn’t much different from when she used to take commissions herself, except that back then it was easy; if she didn’t want to draw, she could just return the money and cancel the order. Now, because Xin Ling was her boss, she always felt constrained.
“You don’t want a promotion and a raise? You want to resign?” Xin Ling found Lin Mianmian’s thought process a bit hard to understand.
She had commissioned her favorite artists before, and Lin Mianmian was the one she was most satisfied with; she was truly a gem of an artist.
She sincerely wanted Lin Mianmian to try drawing manga.
Lin Mianmian said a little guiltily, “Well, I just feel this job isn’t suitable for me.”
“What part isn’t suitable? The price, or something else? You’re not quitting just because I asked you to take on a side job, are you?” Xin Ling guessed.
Although it was technically a side job and the conditions were a bit demanding, she had never underpaid Lin Mianmian for the price.
“I just feel it’s not right for me.” Lin Mianmian was never good with words, and since Xin Ling was her boss, she couldn’t communicate with her properly at all.
Her face would flush before she even started arguing.
She felt she shouldn’t have brought this up at this moment. She should have just resigned without saying anything—it wouldn’t have led to this awkward situation.
When Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi returned, they noticed the atmosphere was drastically different from before. Xin Ling was no longer smiling playfully, and Lin Mianmian’s face was flushed red.
Ji Fanghuai asked with concern, “Mianmian, why is your face so red? Do you have a cold?”
Lin Mianmian randomly came up with an excuse, saying, “I choked on something spicy just now.”
Ji Fanghuai glanced at the dishes on the table, none of which were spicy, and wisely kept silent.
Fortunately, Xin Ling broke the tension immediately by suggesting, “The nightlife is just beginning at this hour. Does everyone want to go to a bar?”
“No,” the three said in unison.
Lin Mianmian didn’t want to stay with Xin Ling any longer, Ji Fanghuai disliked noise, and Jiang Zhi was simple: she didn’t want Ji Fanghuai to drink too much.
Xin Ling asked, “Are you really not going?”
“Not going.” Again, in unison.
Xin Ling said disappointedly, “How boring. Are you still young people? What can you do at home besides sleep at this hour? The Republic of China’s talented woman Xiao Hong once said, ‘Why sleep so long while alive? You will sleep for a long time after death.’ It’s the 21st century, and you still don’t have this level of ideological awareness. This is an intellectual regression and a historical tragedy.”
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
Jiang Zhi said plainly, “For me, sleeping is already very appealing.”
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
Xin Ling ignored Jiang Zhi after realizing what she said and looked intently at Lin Mianmian.
Lin Mianmian was an honest person and said, “My parents will worry if I go back late, and I don’t drink alcohol. Mr. Xin, please be careful and remember that frequently staying up late is bad for your health.”
“Alright then.” Xin Ling didn’t want to make things difficult for her either.
The result of the dinner was that Xin Ling went to the bar alone.
Lin Mianmian had never properly celebrated a birthday with anyone, and her plans were disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Xin Ling and Jiang Zhi. As they parted, she secretly told Ji Fanghuai, “I’ll treat you another time.”
Ji Fanghuai played along, “Okay, happy birthday.”
Lin Mianmian: “Thank you.”
Jiang Zhi was quite interested in the whispering between Ji Fanghuai and Lin Mianmian just now and asked, “Did you give her the gift?”
“I forgot.” Ji Fanghuai slapped her forehead.
When she left the house, she only remembered that the weather was cold and she needed to wear more clothes. Lin Mianmian said she would wait for her at a certain intersection, so she rushed out, completely forgetting about the gift.
Jiang Zhi smiled, “It’s fine, you can give it to her next time. It’s the thought that counts, and delivering it anytime will have the same effect.”
“Mhm.” Only then did Ji Fanghuai feel relieved.
Since their homes were less than a kilometer away, and Jiang Zhi had come with Xin Ling and hadn’t driven, Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi took a stroll to enjoy the night scenery as they walked back.
When they passed the square, there were still grandmothers dancing the square dance.
Ji Fanghuai curiously asked, “How are they not cold?”
Jiang Zhi replied, “You’ll know when you get old.”
Ji Fanghuai imagined herself and Jiang Zhi as old ladies and found the scene a bit comical, but she decided she definitely wouldn’t do the square dance; she’d rather lie at home.
Just as they entered the complex, there was a sudden uproar. The entire night sky went pitch black. Ji Fanghuai instinctively moved closer to Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi took Ji Fanghuai’s hand, turned on the flashlight on her phone, and said, “It must be a power outage.”
Ji Fanghuai said thankfully, “It’s a good thing we walked slowly and hadn’t gotten into the elevator yet.”
Otherwise, it would have been a different story.
They went to find the property management, who said the power might not return today. The cause of the outage was special; even the two neighboring complexes were affected, and it probably wouldn’t be fixed anytime soon.
They could only pant and climb the stairs to their floor.
The complex had never experienced a power outage before, and Jiang Zhi was clearly caught off guard as well.
When opening the door, the fingerprint lock wouldn’t work because there was no power.
Ji Fanghuai suggested, “I’m afraid we’ll have to go out and stay at a hotel tonight. It should only be this area that lost power.”
But after climbing all the way up, she didn’t want to walk down again.
Jiang Zhi was a little tempted, but after thinking it over, she pulled out a key and said, “I brought a spare key.”
Just as she opened the door, a pair of glowing green eyes lunged at them. Ji Fanghuai felt a weight in her arms as a furry creature suddenly burrowed into her embrace.
The fuzzy sensation scared her, and she threw the creature away, immediately turning to hug Jiang Zhi.
“It’s the cat.” Jiang Zhi couldn’t help but laugh as she held Ji Fanghuai. Ji Fanghuai had practically jumped onto Jiang Zhi, hanging on her like a koala.
Hearing it was the cat, she casually got down.
Ji Fanghuai was quite embarrassed, especially since she had been startled by Xixi twice now. She said, “That was just an accident. I wasn’t mentally prepared, which is why I was startled.”
Jiang Zhi nodded and said, “I know.”
“I’m not that timid,” Ji Fanghuai emphasized again.
Although she was indeed timid, she wasn’t that timid. In any case, she didn’t want Jiang Zhi to think she was very timid.
Jiang Zhi quickly agreed, “You are not timid at all.”
It just wasn’t very convincing.
After settling Xixi down, Jiang Zhi thoroughly checked the house and said, “No power, no internet, no water. The power probably won’t come back on today. Let’s just go to sleep.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “No, I need to brush my teeth.”
Fortunately, they had drinking water at home, and the bathroom was fairly bright with a desk lamp. However, as Ji Fanghuai brushed her teeth, she felt her reflection in the mirror looked strange and eerie.
She quickly finished brushing her teeth and got into bed to sleep.
No electricity, no air conditioning.
Ji Fanghuai couldn’t get a good night’s sleep the whole night and kept dreaming.
In her dream, she and Jiang Zhi were very close. She was chasing after Jiang Zhi, calling her “Jiejie” (older sister). Their age seemed much younger, and then the scene suddenly changed. She and Jiang Zhi were tightly intertwined…
When she woke up in the morning, Jiang Zhi recalled the sleep-talking she heard last night and asked, “Did you have a nightmare last night?”
“No, did I talk in my sleep last night?” Ji Fanghuai asked awkwardly. Although she had forgotten many of the details of the dream, she still felt very guilty.
Jiang Zhi frowned slightly and said, “I heard you calling my name, and also…”
“Also what?” Ji Fanghuai asked worriedly.
“And the sound was very strange, like you were crying, but not quite.” Jiang Zhi couldn’t quite describe the feeling. She was scared awake when she heard it.
“You’re overthinking it. Why would I call you or cry? Maybe you were dreaming and dreamt that I called you.” Ji Fanghuai would never admit to such a thing.
She did dream about Jiang Zhi last night. In the dream, she kept calling Jiang Zhi “Jiejie,” and the reason she called her “Jiejie” was all because of what Jiang Zhi had said before about some “sister play.”
The more Ji Fanghuai denied it, the more Jiang Zhi believed she must have had some incredible dream.
She said seriously, “Maybe it’s really a case of what I think about all day, I dream about all night, which is why I dreamt of Fanghuai calling my name so affectionately.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want to talk to her.
Ji Fanghuai later found out that the power and internet outage lasted less than two hours last night, but by then, they were already asleep.
Afterward, Ji Fanghuai found an opportunity to give the drawing tablet to Lin Mianmian. Lin Mianmian said she was very grateful for the gift and that she was just planning to study at home and recharge.
Ji Fanghuai: “You’ve resigned already?”
Lin Mianmian: “Mhm, I feel so much lighter.”
Finally, she didn’t have to spend all evening thinking about what kind of clothes the female protagonist of Spiritual Coffin should wear to look the most ethereal and graceful while catching ghosts.
Ji Fanghuai: “Then all the best!”
Ji Fanghuai had finally managed to get out of the house and naturally didn’t want to go back right away. She wandered around and came to a coffee shop. The coffee shop had recently introduced a milk tea service, and a cup of steaming hot milk tea was just right to warm her stomach.
Ji Fanghuai drank milk tea while watching TV.
Because Jin Lin strongly disliked her and unilaterally treated her as a love rival, Ji Fanghuai didn’t particularly like Jin Lin either. However, she couldn’t deny that Jin Lin had good acting skills, a great image, was tall with long legs, and had an outstanding temperament. Most of the TV dramas she starred in were “Big Female Lead” types.
Ji Fanghuai loved watching these kinds of dramas and was enjoying it immensely, but she didn’t expect to see Shen Jing here.
“Cousin,” Ji Fanghuai was still a bit afraid of interacting with Shen Jing. Shen Jing was always so cold and aloof. Her greeting was purely out of politeness.
Shen Jing said flatly, “I was just passing by and came in to take a look.”
Then she prepared to leave.
Just as Ji Fanghuai was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Shen Jing came back in, ordered a cup of milk tea, and it was the exact same one she was drinking.
Ji Fanghuai found it confusing. When Jiang Zhi came to pick her up, she told Jiang Zhi about it in the car.
“Was she looking for you? And then, seeing that only I was in the shop, she felt it wasn’t convenient, so she left in a hurry?”
Jiang Zhi said plainly, “If she wanted to find me, she could call me directly. And she knows I’m at the company, not at the shop.”
Ji Fanghuai couldn’t figure it out, so she let it go, saying, “Then maybe she really was just passing by.”
Jiang Zhi said helplessly, “She was looking for you.”
“Why would she look for me?” Ji Fanghuai instantly imagined Shen Jing pulling out a wad of cash and slapping it on her face, saying, “Please leave Jiang Zhi immediately.”
Ji Fanghuai laughed at her own imagination. If that were the case, she would definitely take the money and leave right away.
After laughing, Ji Fanghuai saw Jiang Zhi’s very serious expression and quickly became serious, saying, “The lawyer Cousin introduced last time was very helpful. She cares about me so much; please thank her for me.”
“Then why do you think she cares about you so much?” Jiang Zhi was exasperated at how oblivious Ji Fanghuai always was when it came to feelings.
Ji Fanghuai asked in confusion, “Of course, it’s because we are fiancées, so your cousin is also my cousin. If she wants to care about me, what can I do?”
Besides, didn’t Shen Jing like Jiang Zhi? Maybe it was love extending to the one loved, but how could she know what Shen Jing was thinking?
In any case, if she were Shen Jing, she wouldn’t be able to be so magnanimous.
“You…” Jiang Zhi was annoyed.
Ji Fanghuai suddenly felt a trace of danger. She opened her mouth to speak, but unfortunately, before the words could come out, her mouth was blocked by Jiang Zhi.
