- Chapter 30 - Turning Submissive (or Bottom)
Ji Fanghuai said nervously, “How dare you!”
The breathing near her ear grew closer. Just as Ji Fanghuai thought Jiang Zhi would really kiss her, Jiang Zhi obediently let go of Ji Fanghuai and said, “I don’t dare.”
Ji Fanghuai took a small step back, her hair a bit messy. The mischief from Jiang Zhi had left her feeling warm all over, and it felt like a small stove had been lit in her ears.
Ji Fanghuai was slightly annoyed and walked forward sullenly.
Jiang Zhi followed behind her: “Fanghuai.”
Ji Fanghuai ignored her. She didn’t like jokes, especially not in public. She walked quickly and almost stumbled.
“Careful.” Jiang Zhi quickly wrapped her arms around Ji Fanghuai’s waist and then quickly let go. The atmosphere between them was strange.
Jiang Zhi suddenly said, “Do you know what you used to like to do most when you were angry?”
“Do what?” Ji Fanghuai said testily, cheeks puffed out.
Jiang Zhi was just bullying her because she knew more than her.
“Fuzz up. You’d fuzz up the moment you got angry,” Jiang Zhi laughed. “Just like Xixi when she’s angry, but you’re cuter than Xixi when you’re angry. You look like a steaming little teapot about to boil, and all that comes out of your mouth is steam.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai instantly deflated.
Glancing at Jiang Zhi’s umbrella-holding hand, which was red from the cold, Ji Fanghuai couldn’t help but take the handle from her hand and pull Jiang Zhi’s hand into her pocket to warm it.
Jiang Zhi smiled, “I should hold it.”
Ji Fanghuai didn’t say anything. They arrived at the mall. She wanted to sort out Lin Mianmian’s birthday gift and subtly asked Jiang Zhi, “What’s a good birthday gift?”
Jiang Zhi asked confusedly, “Whose birthday is it?”
Ji Fanghuai said, “Mianmian’s birthday is next week.”
Jiang Zhi’s hand was still in Ji Fanghuai’s pocket. She said, “Think about what her hobbies are, then cater to her preferences and give her something related.”
Ji Fanghuai was unsure, “She likes drawing, so should I choose something related to drawing, like a drawing tablet?”
Jiang Zhi said flatly, “That’s fine.”
“Are you unhappy?” Ji Fanghuai suddenly realized she hadn’t given Jiang Zhi a gift before.
Jiang Zhi admitted, “Of course I’m unhappy when my girlfriend is picking out a birthday gift for someone else.”
Ji Fanghuai was surprised, “You don’t need to be jealous about this, do you? Mianmian and I are good friends, and I don’t have feelings for her.”
“Don’t worry, I’m not that petty,” Jiang Zhi merely disliked the fact that there were still other people around Ji Fanghuai.
They bought a drawing tablet at the electronics store. Ji Fanghuai wanted to buy a gift for Jiang Zhi, but then felt like she was buying something for Jiang Zhi with Jiang Zhi’s own money, and since Jiang Zhi was right there, it seemed pointless.
Ji Fanghuai decided to wait until later. When they got home, she couldn’t help but sigh that the house was so much warmer.
During bath time.
“You go first, I want a soak.”
“You go first, I want a soak.”
The two said in unison.
Ji Fanghuai was afraid Jiang Zhi would suggest they bathe together, so she quickly claimed the bathroom first.
Jiang Zhi added, “Take your time, I’m not in a hurry.”
Ji Fanghuai enjoyed a comfortable hot bath.
Jiang Zhi also took her time showering, but when she came out, she was different from usual. Before, she would come out in pajamas, but today she just had a bath towel wrapped around her. Her fair, smooth long legs were hidden beneath the towel, and her good figure was apparent.
Ji Fanghuai got goosebumps just looking at her being cold.
Jiang Zhi covered her chest with one hand, found a hairdryer with the other, and said, “Could you blow-dry my hair for me?”
“Oh, okay.” Ji Fanghuai didn’t know what Jiang Zhi was up to. She took the hairdryer and began blow-drying her hair. The drying cap had absorbed a lot of water, and her semi-damp hair was slightly curled, looking quite charming.
“Your hair is really beautiful,” Ji Fanghuai said, staring at Jiang Zhi’s fair neck hidden beneath her long hair.
Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes and smiled slightly.
Ji Fanghuai was a little distracted. Jiang Zhi’s bath towel was tied well, but she kept worrying it might slip off. Yet, Jiang Zhi was the one wearing the towel, so even if it did slip, she wouldn’t be the one exposed.
The emperor isn’t worried, but his eunuch is.
After Ji Fanghuai finished blow-drying Jiang Zhi’s hair, she felt a great sense of accomplishment looking at the beautiful result.
Jiang Zhi returned to her room and finally changed into pajamas, but the change was too sudden. Ji Fanghuai just saw a sudden flash of white before her eyes, and Jiang Zhi’s bath towel was gone.
She quickly closed her eyes, observing the rule See no evil.
Ji Fanghuai recalled her earlier conversation with Lin Mianmian. Lying in bed with the lights off, she took the opportunity to ask Jiang Zhi, “After you left home, did you ever go back to your step-parents’ house?”
Jiang Zhi hadn’t expected her to ask this, and said, “No.”
Ji Fanghuai speculated, “Were they not good to you?”
With a stepfather and a stepmother, how did Jiang Zhi manage to stay in that home?
Jiang Zhi glanced at Ji Fanghuai and said, “They were alright. They suppressed me mentally, but they didn’t mistreat me materially. In some ways, they were decent to me.”
Ji Fanghuai only heard the tragic part and said, “You must have had a rough childhood.”
Jiang Zhi nodded in agreement, “It was rough.”
“Did they not have children? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have had to stay at their house,” Although Ji Fanghuai didn’t want to bring up painful memories, she wanted to understand her better.
Jiang Zhi’s expression first froze, then she suddenly smiled, “Yes, actually, I have a half-sister, by a different father and mother.”
Another relative? Ji Fanghuai believed that if this sister were here now, she would probably also dislike her greatly.
To be prepared before being disliked, she asked, “Do you still keep in touch?”
Jiang Zhi looked in Ji Fanghuai’s direction in the dark and softly said, “No contact. Just a half-sister. I don’t like older or younger sisters.”
Ji Fanghuai thought to herself, no wonder Jiang Zhi wouldn’t let her call her older sister; perhaps she had a trauma.
Thinking Jiang Zhi was sad, she comforted her, “That’s good, too. Forget the past and start a new life.”
“Mhm,” Jiang Zhi gently held Ji Fanghuai.
Out of sympathy for Jiang Zhi’s tragic past, Ji Fanghuai didn’t push her away and slept like that until morning.
On the day of Lin Mianmian’s birthday, Ji Fanghuai told Jiang Zhi beforehand and then went to meet Lin Mianmian. The two met at a Chinese restaurant, just the two of them.
Lin Mianmian liked things simple.
Lin Mianmian: “This is the first time I’ve met a friend for dinner. Before, I always celebrated my birthday with my parents. When I told them about today, they were very happy and wanted to meet you.”
Ji Fanghuai: “I will certainly visit your aunt and uncle when I have time.”
Lin Mianmian: “No, no, I just meant it casually. My parents are obsessed. Ever since they failed to introduce a boyfriend to me, they’ve started introducing girlfriends. I’m afraid Jiang Zhi will misunderstand.”
“Jiang Zhi isn’t that petty,” Ji Fanghuai thought to herself that Jiang Zhi was actually quite petty, but she wasn’t unreasonable. They were just friends; everyone knew that.
Lin Mianmian worried, “Even if Jiang Zhi doesn’t misunderstand, my parents might. They can really overthink things.”
Ji Fanghuai was curious, “Are your parents that aggressive?”
“They just want me to get married soon, but they’re also worried I’ll marry the wrong person, so they keep looking for young men or women they think are well-off to set me up with,” Lin Mianmian complained.
Ji Fanghuai: “Actually, it can be seen as a sweet worry.”
She didn’t have such worries.
“No, it’s not sweet at all. I just don’t want to get married, not to a man or a woman. Marriage is too terrifying, and I haven’t even dated. I am a firm non-marriage proponent,” Lin Mianmian emphasized repeatedly.
Ji Fanghuai laughed, “You have a point. I didn’t have a dating phase either, but recently I feel like Jiang Zhi is a bit different. She seems to have become more ‘submissive.'”
Lin Mianmian didn’t understand, “More submissive?”
“She hasn’t been as strong lately. She keeps showing some fragile emotions, and then I can’t help but feel sorry for her. She is quite pitiful, actually,” Ji Fanghuai almost suspected Jiang Zhi was deliberately playing pitiful, but these emotions were genuinely present.
When Jiang Zhi looked pitiful, she couldn’t bear to leave her.
Lin Mianmian said, “Maybe everyone wants to be spoiled and doted on. Before, you felt she was older than you, so you were always habitually taken care of. Now, she’s just slowly showing her true self.”
“Perhaps,” Ji Fanghuai found it quite novel.
She asked, “Are you still working for Xin Ling, drawing character concepts for her?”
“The concepts are finished, but I don’t want to go to her house anymore. If she disagrees, I’ll quit. I’ll secretly tell you, she has so many requirements and is extremely fussy,” Lin Mianmian whispered her complaints.
Lin Mianmian shuddered, remembering when Xin Ling suddenly woke up in the middle of the night, knocked on her door, and asked her to draw a character concept.
It was a supernatural novel, and she was asked to draw it in the middle of the night…
Ji Fanghuai said, “That’s good, too. Your job was always a little strange anyway.”
The two were chatting and laughing when they unexpectedly ran into Xin Ling and Jiang Zhi. Ji Fanghuai froze for a moment when she saw Jiang Zhi, who also looked surprised.
Xin Ling was the first to greet them, “Little Lin, are you out for a meal?”
Lin Mianmian truly hadn’t expected to run into the boss, Xin Ling, while eating privately. Most importantly, she had just finished speaking badly about her, making her instantly nervous, “Ms. Xin.”
Xin Ling waved her hand, “No need to be so formal outside. Besides, I just distribute money at the end of the year. Jiang Zhi is the one who manages the company.”
If Xin Ling hadn’t mentioned it, Lin Mianmian would have forgotten that Jiang Zhi was their company’s big boss. She said, “Ms. Jiang.”
Jiang Zhi nodded, just looking at Ji Fanghuai.
Xin Ling said, “Do you mind if we join your table?”
“No, not at all.” Lin Mianmian was completely tense.
Ji Fanghuai actually didn’t want to share a table with them. She signaled with her eyes to Jiang Zhi, but Jiang Zhi acted as if she hadn’t seen it.
Xin Ling called a waiter, wanting to order a few more dishes, and casually asked, “Is today a special occasion?”
Ji Fanghuai said, “It’s Mianmian’s birthday today.”
Xin Ling hadn’t expected it was Lin Mianmian’s birthday and was a little embarrassed. Fortunately, everyone knew each other. She quickly said, “Happy Birthday. This meal is on me. Don’t be nervous, we’re all friends.”
Lin Mianmian was only closest to Ji Fanghuai and felt awkward, but Xin Ling was good at keeping the atmosphere lively and didn’t make Lin Mianmian the center of attention just because it was her birthday.
Lin Mianmian soon got used to it.
Xin Ling said, “Since we’re all together, let’s play something common: Truth or Dare.”
Jiang Zhi was speechless and said nothing.
Ji Fanghuai was not interested in such a childish game but wanted to try the red wine.
Jiang Zhi reminded her from the side, “Drink less.”
Ji Fanghuai remembered her embarrassing drunken incident and didn’t dare drink too much.
As a humble employee, Lin Mianmian could only go along with her boss. Thinking about it, everyone at the table was her boss—Jiang Zhi was the big boss, Ji Fanghuai was the boss’s wife, and Xin Ling was her direct superior.
Lin Mianmian, who had never imagined having dinner with her superiors, almost experienced a social death.
After Lin Mianmian agreed, Xin Ling said, “We don’t need any competition rules. Since there are few of us, let’s just take one turn each, starting with Jiang Zhi.”
Jiang Zhi shot Xin Ling a side glance and continued drinking her wine as if nothing happened.
Xin Ling, with a mischievous look, asked, “If you had the chance, Jiang Zhi, what kind of play do you like most?”
Ji Fanghuai choked on her sip of wine, and Lin Mianmian blushed slightly.
Jiang Zhi answered coldly, “Sisterhood.”
“Haha, you want to be the older sister that badly? Didn’t you say before…” Xin Ling covered her mouth, afraid of a slip-up.
Jiang Zhi added, “It depends on the occasion.”
Ji Fanghuai immediately thought of what Jiang Zhi had said before: she was only allowed to call her older sister in bed.
Xin Ling said, “Next, it’s Fanghuai.”
Ji Fanghuai was afraid she would ask something personal.
She and Jiang Zhi were pure and innocent, but she could use amnesia as an excuse to dodge. Unexpectedly, Xin Ling asked the same question in a different way.
“Fanghuai, what do you like most about Jiang Zhi?”
Ji Fanghuai struggled, wanting to say she couldn’t be sure because of her amnesia, but Xin Ling interjected, “Just what you’ve liked recently.”
Jiang Zhi also became serious, listening intently.
Ji Fanghuai didn’t know what she liked.
Her face? Her figure? Her money?
Finally, under Jiang Zhi’s hopeful gaze, she said, “I like that she respects me the most.”
Xin Ling scoffed, “That’s boring.”
She then turned to Lin Mianmian, “Little Lin, since it’s your birthday, I won’t make it difficult for you. I’ll also give you a birthday gift: have you considered making an original comic?”
“I haven’t considered it.” Lin Mianmian truly admired how Xin Ling came up with ideas on a whim. Making an original comic required having your own story, and she was just an artist.
Xin Ling was a little disappointed, “I have a complete story. If you’re interested, I can give you the rights. Then, after you finish drawing it, we can find a platform to publish it.”
Lin Mianmian said, “No, thank you for your kind offer, Ms. Xin.”
She really didn’t want Xin Ling to be her Boss/Client anymore.
Xin Ling was troubled, “Then what kind of birthday gift do you want? A promotion or a raise?”
“…” Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi looked helpless. Ji Fanghuai needed to go to the restroom, and Jiang Zhi followed, leaving Xin Ling and Lin Mianmian to continue discussing birthday gifts.
In front of the sink.
Ji Fanghuai asked Jiang Zhi, “How did you two end up here?”
“Xin Ling said she was bored and asked me to go out with her, so I came out. I didn’t expect to run into you here,” Jiang Zhi said flatly.
“Is it such a coincidence?” Ji Fanghuai didn’t quite believe her.
Jiang Zhi blinked innocently, “You went to a friend’s birthday party. Can’t I go out and have fun while I’m home alone?”
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
Why did she make it sound like Ji Fanghuai was a heartbreaker?
